Thanks so much for this video. I was really worrying about the difficulty with the log we need to replace but you alleviated much of my fears. Thanks again & have a nice weekend.
@@TheSawDustDude Oh Lord I started removing a 4' section of log and it is crazy hard for sure. I've been using a skilsaw, chisel, sawzal & big slotted but think tomorrow will be a mini chain saw used for limbs to get it cleaned out. Your video was a huge help. Thanks again.
My parents built their cabin here in north central Florida back in 1984. They have both passed, unfortunately, and since I am quite sentimental I've kept and now live in their cabin. I have some areas of wood rot that I have been fretting over! I really appreciate how you present your video content, as you are not monotone, you get to the point, and are kinda funny.....😉 Wish me luck 🤞🏼

Hey have you ever used Q8 log oil ? Thinking of Using it on my cabin. I used it on the shed and so far it's great. My cabin looks like the one your repairing in this video. I need some D logs.
I cut out 16 inches of rot on bottom log that sat on a rotted sill There is a 2 inch dried up old rot in middle of 6 inch log. Id like to fill this small bit of rot with a good wood filler. Any advice on a product. Thanks again you have been a God sent help.
Dan what I do is take that small damaged area and coat it with epoxy or MinWax wood hardener, then fill it full of Bondo to give it strength again, assuming that section will not be seen. Sounds like you've got it whipped, congratulations 🍀👍🍺. Thanks again for watching
I bought a lot cabin and had the exact same issue. I was hoping to watch this video for a better way to get the logs out but it appears what I'm doing is the same as you did. Awesome tip on cutting the new logs to size with the board.
Hey this is smokeybailey I think I met you sum years ago perhaps at Bonnie Chapman s house. I build log house’s from scratch since 1982 I go to church with George Edmondson he told me about your you tube channel. I enjoyed your video plan to watch more hope to meet again
You have answered all my ? S..Now I have one stupid question ..To fill a rotted dry beam which is now well supported do I mix the liquid wood with the wood epozy..I ask because qhen I filled the beam hole first time the liquid wood just oozed out. Now I just ordered the wood epox as I have the 2 quarts of liquid wood ready to mix.
No stupid questions. Brush on the epoxy small amounts, let it dry between coats. Then add your wood filler. If you do wood filler too thick, takes for ever to dry. That's why I use Bondo in hidden spots, it dries faster. Hope this helps out. 👍🍀🍺
Just bought my first log cabin home, during the final walkthrough we found carpenter ants... you've given me hope that we'll be able to manage the repair without bankrupting ourselves. Thank you so much for putting this video out.
Good to know I just bought a log house needs fixing but sadly can’t find no one to fix my old cabin house here in Utah. For some reason companies don’t get back to me once they see pictures of my log house. It’s been 6 months and still trying to find someone to help with this cabin and it is even livable to. Who knows why companies don’t get back when they see pictures. I thought companies fixing cabins will be easy to find now I regret buying a small log house.
Hang in there and hang on to that dream you have for your log home. Go to Perma Chink website and see if there is a contractor near you. Check out my other videos in the log cabin playlist for more tips. Thanks for watching, please Subscribe. Good luck on your project 🍀
I just recently bought a log home and now notice that there are ALOT of cracks on the logs. It’s October and getting much colder in the northeast. I was wondering if it could go another winter before I seal all the cracks and rechink?
Most products that you use, temps need to be above 40 degrees. Realistically, Sometimes you just run out of good weather. But you can also care from the inside out. Caulk the checks and gaps on the inside too. This will help with your energy cost. Then jump on the outside next season. Good luck on your log home
Absolutely. Always used products that are designed for log homes, like Perma Chink products. Good luck on your project. Thanks for watching and please Subscribe 🍀🍺
I use J&B weld epoxy, pro size off of Amazon. Then use Landscaping construction adhesive to secure after expoy dries. Run in some finish decking screws too. Good luck, thanks for watching!!
What exactly are you putting on the log after you remove the rot and before you put on the veneer. Epoxy of some sort? I have to do my house and just need some help, thanks
Just found you today. I have subscribed. Now I at least know carpenter bees don't just bother us. Woodpeckers bang on the house less when we put out suet, and the cracks in the logs are called checks. So I have learned something today.@@TheSawDustDude
Go by a local lumber yard and see if they have or can order you some. Then if you find a D log, you may have to reshape the profile to match your logs. Good luck, thanks for watching and please Subscribe 🍀🍺
Are you located near Washington? I am under contract for a log home in kettle falls and need quotes for repairs from the Inspection? Or do you recommend someone over that was

@@TheSawDustDude thank you I really appreciate it!! I was able to reach out to one just waiting for a response. Love your videos!! Def going to need to learn how to maintain this home
Can you make a step by step video of what epoxy you used and how to place the log in using the epoxy? When you remove a whole log, how do you make sure it stays in place? Maybe a video on that also please.
Morgan, I get all of my log home supplies from Perma Chink, even the expoy. Replace the entire log is something I would leave to the pros, Things can go south real quickly. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I need help/advice on our log house. We plan on repairing ourselves but I need a plan of action. Is that something you can help with? If so, how do you want me to communicate? I'm willing to pay for the advice. thanks.
Not sure, I've never used it on logs before. Just keep an eye on it and see how it performs over time. Hopefully he gave you some sound advice. Thanks for watching!
Paul, there are many variables when coming up with a dollar amount. A simple list to go by: materials (stain, brushes, cleaning supplies, gas for power washer, etc), equipment rental cost (if I need a lift) then a labor amount (this covers my help, my business cost so we can make a profit). Every contractor does it a little different and my suggestion would be to study up on this topic because you don't want to lose money on your jobs. But my big advice is this, when you come up with an estimate for doing a job, don't let that number freak you out and then start lowering your profit margin. My saying is: I couldn't afford me! This is the price! I hope this helps you, thanks for watching and please Subscribe!
