    Hanna was definitely underestimated by the rest of the liars and that’s why I sometimes question their friendships. Hanna was the most loyal, caring character and she wasn’t stupid. But they took her for an absolute idiot, they didn’t take her seriously, especially spencer constantly correcting her when it’s clearly irony.

      Hanna was pretty damn idiot and never knew what irony was but go off I guess. Still thinking how she mistakes a blind girl for a deaf girl. I totally get why someone intelligent like Spencer or the others (sometime) would not trust something important in her hands. She never lived up to the task.

    With the parenting, I remember this heartbreaking scene. Tom was going to pay for one of his 'daughters' college. He chose Kate his new daughter because he thought Hanna wasn't smart enough to go to college. When in fact she did great on the SATs. This just hurt me, and made me feel sorry for her. So she can get money, she enters a beauty pageant where her coach says she not good enough. Everyone is telling her she's not good enough.

    • @annaeverette8960
      @annaeverette8960 3 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      The college thing was a bit of a plot hole to be fair. If they rejected Hannah's aid application based on her father's income then it means she could easily get a loan with her father acting as a guarantor (and it should have occurred to Tom, as well).
      Then again, maybe it wouldn't because he was too self-absorbed to give a damn. He behaved so unbelievably selfish in that moment, telling her his new daughter will get to go to the college of her choice because he _promised Isabelle_. Hey Tom, didn't you previously make a promise _to Hannah_ that she's always going to be your daughter? And now it turns out you haven't spoken to your daughter about her college plans since she was, what, 12? SMH.

      And when it came out Kate actually send another girls picture with her head on it,and not Hannah
      He didn't even apologize and left and probably still paid for Kate the college
      And never was seen again which just is a prove that he never loved Hannah
      In my opinion Hannah should have sued Kate for what she did or better saying Hannah should have tried to find out whose body it was and convinced this person to suing Kate, which would mean Kate wouldn't probably go to college after all she would be a sex offender for sending Nude pics

    On the comment about why Allison would want Hannah in the clique, I have been the “ugly friend” in the popular group and I think a comment the ring leader made in front of the whole group is pretty telling. I had cystic acne on my whole body, face to legs, but I still had genuine friendships with these other girls and had boyfriends. This girl told me in front of everyone I’m the ugly friend the group keeps around to feel better about themselves, which I knew wasn’t true to everyone in that clique, but was more telling of her. And that’s probably what Allison did with Hannah when they were younger. She was her ego boost.

      Wow! That was really cruel. I'm sorry someone said that to you. I know exactly what you mean in terms of group dynamics bc that's exactly what I thought about Hanna when it came to Alison and the Liars. Hanna even admitted she felt special to be chosen by Alison so she put up with the horrible comments and slights by her. I felt like the "ugly friend" in my group when I moved from England to America at 13. My new school was small and the kids had known each other their entire lives, so I was trying to fit in ANYWHERE, and would tolerate things I'd never allow today. Growing up sucks!

    A bold, confident Hanna arc would've contrasted really well with an Aria A reveal imo, it always felt like Hanna and Aria were the most blatant with saying what they felt and being sort of reckless, but it almost felt like writers no longer knew what to do with the series once Alison came back. After season 1 and at most season 2, Haria never happened. The worst was Aria slut-shaming and victim-blaming Hanna for the whole Zac thing in season 5. Iirc, it was actually supposed to end after Season 3, so you're right about them not having expected the show to go on that long, and tbh, it definitely shows. I also think they didn't want to be predictable to a detrimental degree. Your audiences putting pieces together and figuring out who A is probably speaks more to consistency of the writing and the plot-development. Yeah, you shouldn't make it super obvious, but I digress. I think a lot of the time when people figured out who A was the writers scrambled to change it last-minute because they didn't want to be predictable, which led to a lot of inconsistencies and plot elements that, in the long run, didn't make sense, created more problems (i.e. plot-holes). It also led them to introduce factors and plot elements that were completely out of nowhere and didn't tie in with the plot because, well, it was made up on the spot--why? Because they didn't want audiences figuring it out. Like the whole Ezra plot where he's writing a book--which, I mean, Ezra/Aria were pretty fucking awful from the beginning, but that whole plot-element made Ezra look wayyyy worse... and they just... glossed over it? Didn't set it up to begin with? Lmao.

Bullied by someone she idolized, forced into an eating disorder, constantly thought of as stupid and not as intelligent as the other members of her peer group, forced into It Girl status by basically making her look like one of her abusers, treated cruelly by the stepsister her father clearly favors over her, being through countless traumas.....regression makes sense. And unfortunately Hanna being the one to regress makes the most sense because of EVERYTHING that was stacked against her. It sucks because she should have been given the chance to shine because there were brief moments and glimpses where she does shine. But she also is the comedic relief. And honestly I don't think the writers of PLL were intentional with her regression and if they were they did a shitty job. Because they could have done it fully aware of what happens to young adults who have been through compound trauma and regress and actually had her navigate that and the Liars being supportive. But they were never supportive of Hanna. And it infuriates me.....and now I'm ranting.

      poor Hanna. the issue is i feel that the directors/creators wanted to have her be super impulsive and grumpy towards the end without an actual reason or explanation? I believe Hanna’s shift in behavior in S5 happens because of the return of Ali and then Mona’s supposedly death and in S6 the effects of the dollhouse. It gotten worse in the time jump where she lost her job, got abducted and tortured, and broke up with her fiancé. Hanna’s been tortured the most by all three A’s and her having little patience, snapping, and yelling at ppl is the most realistic reaction with the amount of trauma she went through. But at the same time, I felt Ashley Benson was over with the show around that time. As you noticed, Hanna’s voice is low as Ashley in S6-S7.

    I think what’s most upsetting about the love triangle is no friends that close would be okay with an ex dating their friend nor would the friend be comfortable dating the ex. It just seems to cross way to many boundaries, and what if the ex shares things about your best friend that they didn’t want to share with you? It just feels super weird and if the show claims they’re inseparable and the best of friends, it’s really hard to believe Spencer would be comfortable doing it.

    I feel like when Alison came back thats Hannah started dressing darker, being sulky and turning to alcohol. I find that very realistic too because Alison was terrible to Hannah, she was manipulative and had some sick motive behind everything she said to her. Alison tormented Hannah (maybe Emily im not sure) the most. It makes sense for when Alison comes back Hannah will start to spiral because she brings so much baggage. Hannah also had to try to be there for her since she came back after the run and that was also hard on her. Overall I think that it was realistic for Hannah to spiral after Alison came back but I wish that there wouldve been a moment where Hannah realized that she is better than what she was doing and and a character arc woudve happened.

    • @shirin9452
      @shirin9452 3 ปีที่แล้ว +236

      I mean, it is definitely true that they glamorized her ED but I think she specifically says Alison taught her how to throw up but she didn’t stay with it. So she didn’t exactly have bulimia, but definitely disordered eating (though it was kind of swept under the rug), possibly some version of anorexia that began when she and Mona decided to become popular and hot. And they were so irresponsible to treat it the way they did.

    • @sunnycastiglioni7512
      @sunnycastiglioni7512 3 ปีที่แล้ว +194

      I don't think Hannah was meant to actually have bulimia, although the writers didn't do a very good job of explaining. It's not uncommon for teens and young adults to experiment with ED behaviors but not fully make criteria for an ED. But no matter how you look at it, Hannah's weight loss really just glorifies the culture of shame about our bodies and that's never addressed.

    • @speeeee35
      @speeeee35 3 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      You know the majority of the symptoms you mentioned don’t happen for YEARS, right? I was that way severely for years and people used to ask me for diet advice as I’d lost so much weight and appeared so healthy. I always assumed it was bc I was young so my body was able to recover first. I had a tiny bit of healthy chub. My hair never fell out- until years later when I ceased eating entirely (I didn’t ever hear of hair falling out being associated with bul? Not even in treatment). Same with the cilia hairs on my face (came during ana). Anyway the puffiness and bloating did happen eventually but after years.... though THAT is more common to happen in the early days.
      As for your teeth... let’s put it this way.... I had the same dentist for 12 years and I was bulemic the first ten.... he didn’t notice or say anything about my teeth having no enamel and start asking me about my ed until I’d already been to treatment and was in a period of being healthy after a decade (then relapsed and was ana predominant for two or so years but it got really bad really quick so I got serious help after that now I’ve been a normal weight for years. I’m 32 btw
      They did glamorize it in the sense though that they didn’t show HER turmoil enough. People complimenting you and shit is realistic. Even if not in all cases, it was in mine. People were treating me TOTALLY different, like I was a celebrity or something (when i was skinny but not too skinny and didn’t have physical symptoms yet in the first 5 years or so). I think the unrealistic part was that they essentially showed her to be entirely mentally stable, then just puke, then back to normal. Like as if she got called chubby by Allison and DECIDED to lose weight that way. Which, as we all know, the people who “decide” to try it but don’t have the disease don’t keep it up because it’s disgusting and awful and obviously only someone sick would be doing something so hurtful to themselves too.

    Thank you for mentioning Holbrook and Wren kissing Hanna, because PLL consistently normalized teenage girls hooking up with grown men (sometimes women in Emily’s case). Ezra is obvious, but so many of the grown male characters introduced in the show have relationships or hookups with the teen girls in the show, even Mona, Jenna, and Allison, and it isn’t shown as inappropriate. While I think the Pennsylvania age for consent in 16/17 I think, they hardly ever show the ramifications on the girls from being in relationships with older guys or how their looked like from the perspective of others, with the exception of Aria/Ezra. Aria made it seem like Zack coming on to Hanna was crazy and that was the only time they openly condemned an adult/child relationship on the show

      Wasn't it Hannah who kissed both Wren and Holbrook? At least Holbrook immediately backed away which was decent of him (Wren on the other hand asked her out, of course, because he's Wren).
      Zack thing was particularly disturbing because she was visibly intoxicated at the time.
      I never really wrapped my head around Aria's reaction to that. "I just didn't want to believe he could do this to my mom" seems like a weak excuse after everything she's been through with her friends. In what universe would Hannah lie about something like this?

    I think one of the worst writing decisions in the show was to make Hanna and Caleb break up over the time jump. The love triangle was horrible and it also made it seem like their relationship (which was probably the strongest in the show) only really works when they are in danger.
    Also, it's been a while since I watched the show, but watching your "sensitive subjects" category I feel like she had a lot of mental health issues (not just her ED, but also the stealing, the drinking and her aggressive behavior) that the writers just glossed over.

    I've just realised that I didn't hate the Spencer and Caleb storyline because it was out of character, but because it *is* in character for all three of them. It really revealed who they really are, and it's unnerving because you love these people, you want them to win, and yet they're far from perfect. Spencer betrayed her sister by stealing two of her partners, and then chose to pursue her best friend's ex boyfriend. Not just an ex, but the love of Hanna's life at that point. Caleb was willing to hurt Hanna in order for a quick fling. And Hanna didn't hesitate to break Spencer's heart when she realised she was still in love with Caleb and wanted him back. She even purposefully held his hand in front of Spencer, and was very close, and insisted they had to do something, just the two of them. The love triangle was clearly meant to be dramatic and exciting, but in reality, it just revealed really negative sides to all of their characters. And especially in the final season of a beloved tv show, that's the last thing we want as an audience.

    Hanna was so lovable and sweet until Alison returned, after that she pretty much annoyed me with everything she said or did.
    The same thing with Elena, very lovable and sweet until she turned into a vampire.
    It's so sad when writers ruin characters by not giving them a good arc. Like, let a good person turn into a villain if you want to, but make it good - not annoying or cringy.
    Like with Hanna, they could've made her struggle with Alison returning so interesting but no, they just made her annoying.

    The pagent scene: she was upset because of Alison pushing her into the shadow and her dad chosing his step daughter over her. I thought she was going to have a moment after that where she broke down, talked to Emily, and realised she had value of her own. It would have helped both girls, especially with Alison. But instead it's just dropped. There was so much emotional turmoil they could have explored there and instead they just did a drinking thing. There was so much growth potential just ignored for more of the same thing as the previous seasons.

    I feel like the writers missed a opportunity to really talk about body image and eating disorders and bullying.. Hanna Body image issues were poorly done. And I found that the writers could have used this plot after the time jump to make Hanna and Alisson connect. Like, Alisson was a bully that used to pic on people for what their body looked like. She made Hanna’s life hell making her think she wouldn’t be beautiful if she wasn’t skinny. I find it really hard to believe Alisson wouldn’t struggle with gaining weight. Like, they just ignored it as if fatphobia didn’t exist and it doesn’t matter that the actress gained weight she is still beautiful. Like yeah, she is still fucking GORGEOUS. But the hate she received by the fans shows us really clearly that society is quick to hate on our body. They could have made this an actual plot and make her struggle with acceptance and make her apologize to Hanna for what she did to her in the pass.

    In general, I was very disappointed by how all the relationships were handled after the time jump. It was SO OBVIOUS that the writers wanted the original couples to be endgame, they didn’t even try to make us root for their new partners. Funny thing is some Spaleb shippers like to use the door scene as part of why they “should be endgame”, but forget that the door scene happened after Hanna ‘turned Caleb down’. At least when Spencer confessed her feelings to Caleb from her POV Hannah genuinely moved on, about to get married to her guy -- not an absolute excuse, when it's your best friend, but she did seem deeply in love so okay.

    I would love if someday you could make a video about the parents on the show, and how many problems they made so much worse by being awful. There's no one parent on this show I think is really good, except for maybe Emily's dad who is an absolute champion. Hanna's parents are terrible - Ashley often involves Hanna in her own messes, and Tom is never there for his daughter unless she does something wrong or gets into trouble, like you said. Emily's mom, Pam, is straight-up homophobic and is so awful towards her daughter, it makes my heart hurt watching so many scenes with the two of them. She handles Emily's coming out in completely the wrong way, basically insinuating that Emily's whole life is over because she's gay. Ella and Byron, Aria's parents, basically victim-blame their own daughter when they find out about her relationship with Ezra - rather than discussing the possibility that Ezra is a predator and took advantage of their daughter, they just called Aria naive and trying to be mature before she should be, accusing her of being the problem in that relationship. Spencer's parents, Peter and Veronica, are terrible also, only protecting one of their daughters when she gets in trouble and showing blatant favouritism to Melissa, oftentimes doing the same as the Montgomerys where they blame Spencer for problems she didn't even cause, such as hooking up with Wren or her drug addiction, or accusing her of things she didn't even do like when her mom found her the morning after she snuggled her tutor/sober sponsor - Dean, I think his name was. No matter how much Spencer insisted that nothing happened, Veronica was determined to believe that they'd slept together. She never believes her daughter is innocent or has the capability of making mistakes, expecting her to be perfect all the time. There's so much that could be discussed with the parents, and I think it could make for a really interesting video

      I think we can all agree that all the parents (Emily’s dad is the exception) had their flaws, but honestly the show wouldn’t be as good if the parents were great. If they were good parents, most of the drama wouldn’t have happened. The liars would have been home at a decent hour, with their parents knowing where they are and who their hanging out with. They also wouldn’t have been able to keep A a secret from their parents from as long either. Also, I think Emily’s dad kind of had to be a great parent because he was hardly able to be there. But I’m glad he did what he could when he was there for Emoily. I loved that when he returned in season 2 to help Emily find Maya. That was so sweet to see

    • @surfpassion19
      @surfpassion19 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Mikelafication I think the Liars could have still figured out ways to do everything they did even with good parents. Imagine having a set curfew and house rules, but the Liars need to go meet up with someone after hours and need to sneak out. There could have been more situations like with Dr. Sullivan, where seeing her was obviously the right decision for them but the show made the parents look like they were in the wrong when they were obviously in the right here. Instead of Emily's parents being homophobic when she first comes out, imagine a storyline where they're trying to get to know Maya and navigating how to set boundaries for Emily's girl friends vs girlfriends. Imagine Ella and Byron being actual good parents to Aria when they found out about Ezra, being a safe space for her to go and tell them all about what he did, and then getting some proper justice for Aria and trying to help her set boundaries with other guys and teach her that being with guys her own age or even single is okay! Imagine Ashley trying to navigate having a healthy relationship with boundaries with Hanna, despite the fact that Hanna is used to being treated like a princess who can do whatever she wants! Imagine Spencer's parents supporting her through her mental health crisis and every other time she gets into trouble, going to bat for her like with Melissa! (As you can see, I have some Thoughts about this). I just think there could have been so many better ways to handle the parents than how the show did

    I know Hanna is a fan favourite but it is personally difficult for me to ignore some of the things she has done and it is hard to just overlook her behaviour sometimes.
    Throughout the series, her friends and family consistently give her advice and warnings about certain situations she should not involve herself in at any cost but we all know how much she listens. Whenever her plans fail (which is basically every time), she lashes out on the rest of the girls. When the girls are discussing theories about A, Hanna starts screaming at everyone and it honestly becomes hard to take her seriously because she was not the only one who was suffering (this is more applicable post time jump though). There were a lot of other cases when she was too impulsive such as touching the barrel, burying Ashley's gun, destroying Caleb's flash drive, confessing to Charlotte's murder, pressuring Sean into something he wasn't ready for and then destroying his car because of that, kidnapping Noel, deleting the security footage of Aria and Ezra in 6B which was surprising, considering they were five years older so you'd think they have matured.
    I also didn't like her attitude during the entire Spaleb scenario. Yes, dating your friend's ex isn't a good move but Hanna gave them her blessing and she was engaged to someone else so what her high school ex is doing should not be that big of a deal. If you still have feelings for him, you need to speak up rather than leading on your fiance. At least Spencer respected Hanna by not starting anything with Caleb in Barcelona, whereas Hanna was unable to understand that you can't claim a person forever and he is not your property.
    I was glad Spencer called her out after the barrel situation and Hanna actually apologised for it. Actually owning up to her mistakes would have made her more likeable. If it wasn't for her impulsiveness, she'd be my favourite liar.

    It took me a while to realize why I "tolerated" Hanna for so long. At first I really liked her and her character traits, but then I started to see what is wrong about her. It's not necessarily that she is a bad character. It's more because of her being surrounded by very well-written characters, like her mother and Caleb. Yes, Caleb's arc in the final season was stupid, but he was overall very likable, because he was always helping the Liars with next to no questions asked. And yes, Hanna's mother also did some weird things, but I kind of understand her reasons and her motives and you can genuinely tell that she is a good person. You can’t blame him for being scared for her after all of that stuff pretty much traumatized them. Besides, he did that one time and NEVER does it again, so he learned not to be that extreme

    For your spencer video (so excited!) I wish they better explored her relationship with her family. It always grossed me out how they blamed Spencer for being taken advantage of by Melissa's older boyfriends and very openly favored Melissa. I wish she could've actually confronted them on this or her issues with feeling like second-best. And I have no idea how Melissa actually feels for her sister. She's incredibly cruel or vicious one moment and then suddenly suddenly protective or caring another. Sisters fighting then being friendly is normal, but possibly helping your sister's torturer is not. At that one scene with the masks on the peer or whatever, Melissa acts like Spencer suspecting her of working for A was unreasonable but considering so much of Melissa's earlier behavior, it was completely understandable why Spencer thought her own sister would try to harm her. Also, the fact that Spencer is shown to be genuinely afraid of her family at several points is pretty alarming since the other girls never really fear that their own family would actually be willing to hurt them like Spencer does. That's a huge red flag and should've been explored more. Why is this never discussed or talked about? Her instinctive fear of them is really messed up.

    Around 23:20 I think Hanna would have been better to focus on the business aspect of fashion: modeling & marketing. Aria was always the artsy one so it wouldn’t have made sense to see her start sketching & sewing (especially since that’s what aria did in the books but for some reason they never showed it on the show). Honestly the timejump was just so off tbh, it messed up so much 😂

    I know Sean was only in like 10 episodes but it would have been nice to see him again later on. So many relationships from season 1 just served as filler scenes and the characters suddenly ✨vanished✨ like imagine if Sean, given his religious background worked with Pastor Ted and it would have created some cool scenes with Hanna

    That comment you made about emily and ari are saying all female characters are good for is making babies and being in relationships that really blew my mind because the riders managed to give the only LGBTQ plus character a storyline where it ended up with her having children and they didn’t adopt, it was a mistake. there was so many cool avenues that they could’ve taken with emily if they wanted to go to the root of her having children they could’ve I don’t know made her adopt or made her get artificially inseminated on purpose but they had to make it some awful trauma that brought her and Alison together. even know Alison it was the most toxic person in her coming out story and the reason that it took us so long to come out. I would’ve loved for Emily to end up in some sort of other position emily was smart and she had so much potential and they just wasted it. I wish that emily ended up the coach of a really successful swim team like an Olympic swim team or something and then she became a mentor two are really talented up-and-coming swimmer and maybe she wrote a book on her experiences being an out swimmer and she could’ve written about her injury. Why did she have to end up married with kids I am so annoyed

    Hannah was always a very missed opportunity to me too! I loved her in the first 4 seasons and then she just got too snippy for me, even though I did really like the LOOK of her Gothic phase. It just felt like she never reached the level of confidence i wanted her to. I LOVE your videos they are amazing and I can't thank you enough for all the work you put into them all the time it's truly amazing. I have a request for a video about the men of PLL. It would be awesome if in one video you just broke it into sections and for example did Section 1 Ezra, 2 Wren, 3 Noel, 4, Caleb, 5 Toby and so on that would be really awesome and I personally would love to see that!!!

    WOW 🤩❗️ you’ve really hit some major points with this one. Hanna is tied with Spencer in being my 1 favorite. GOD ITS SO FRUSTRATING that you’d say her grunge phase was awful lol. I LOVED IT!
    Mainly because at that point I was certain Aria was going to be -A ( then she wasn’t 😑 ) anyway I thought it would have been brilliant Foreshadowing in a sense that Hanna’s identity crisis is a hint at all the -A’s FOR EXAMPLE: she befriends Mona who turns her into copy of Alison. Alison then returns and that’s triggering for her so she takes style expression inspiration from Aria, then slowing gets back to herself only to discover Alison & Aria where both working together as the A team.
    Honestly, instead of twins, it should have been Aria and Alison’s toxic friendship and obsession with the girls and each other. Also I just felt like Hanna was more fitting as The Rebel ( dream goth girl) than Aria which is who I think the writers wanted it to be but Aria just came off as sociopath. I also hated all the “Shut up Hanna” bits; your friends should not be telling you to shut up and not speak your mind. And I also hated Aria snapping at her after the Zach thing. As a men who’s been raped at a young age and seeing the girls in and out of unethical relationships was disturbing. All in all, great video!
    SIDE NOTE: to celebrate 10.k subscribers, you should watch the first SCREAM movie and do a reaction video and character analysis of Sidney and Tatum.
    ( In closing sorry I have to be a douche; I loved your boobs in this video your gorgeous and your humor is brilliant 🤭🥰😝)

    I always had a soft spot for Hannah bc I could relate to the single mom thing, I think they used Hannah for the bitch archetype bc they realized they didn’t have that anymore with Ali when they brought her back.
    Also all jokes aside, what was that dance scene? It’s like they wanted us to laugh at her 😭
