1985 Chevy Monte Carlo - The Best of the G-Bodies

- Real Ridez traveled to Outer Banks, NC, to interview Michael Tillett, owner of a SEMA worthy 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo. And when we say “SEMA worthy”, we mean it-the car has actually been on display at SEMA in 2013.
Mike originally purchased the Monte Carlo with 47k miles, intending to use it as a daily driver. As the years went on, so did the miles. Things broke. That’s when Mike decided if he was going to put money into fixing the car, he was going to do it right.
As a little boy, he always wanted a car that was in a magazine. With a limited budget, Mike knew it would take years to complete his show car build. To top it off, this isn’t an ordinary restoration. Mike built the Monte Carlo the way he felt the factory should have always built it, with a V6 power plant out of a Grand National, a Hurst Lightning Rod shifter, and other design choices, Mike combined the best of GM’s G-Bodies.
After 10 years, he debuted his masterpiece to the world at SEMA in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was a dream come true; not everyone gets a spot at the world’s largest aftermarket automotive show. It requires a lot of work and investments. That’s where something special happened. Friends and family, along with local businesses throughout the Outer Banks, came together to complete the build and sent Mike to debut it at SEMA in 2013. After ten years, Mike’s dream came true.
Today, the award-winning Monte Carlo has graced multiple magazines, television shows, and, of course, SEMA.
Realizing his dreams would have not been possible without the help of the community, he works with close friends on several local fundraisers, youth programs, and travels across the country, enlisting his beautiful g-body in shows while being an ambassador for the Outer Banks.
Every year, Mike and his friends host the OBX Rod and Customs Festival
“It’s not my car, it’s an Outer Banks car,” said Mike.

Growing up, one of my grandmothers had a Monte Carlo, and the other had a Buick Regal. When I was in high school, one of the adult counselors in my church youth group had a Monte Carlo SS, one buddy's mom had a Cutlass 442, and another buddy's dad had a Grand National. After school, I dated a girl with a Pontiac Grand Prix. I still LOVE those old G bodies!
So cool growing up around those cars. Definitely an iconic era for GM! G bodies still look great in the road today! Thanks for watching and sharing your story!

I can't add anymore to all the comments about this awesome Monte Carlo. Just a phenomenal job.
On a side note, a lot gets said about what GM "should" have done with these cars power plant wise. People don't understand the politics involved when it comes to building something at GM that could challenge the Corvette in terms of speed. Its basically what killed the Grand National.

I have a 1986 MCSS hibernating in the garage for the winter. It's been in shop jail most of its life. Finally back and ready for the spring. 69k miles on the body, 3k miles on the new motor.

I had the opportunity to see this BEAUTIFUL car at a car show. The incredible work that's been done on this car is beyond words of description . You just have to see it up close in person . Also had the opportunity to meet Mr. Mike and his wife who has her own car that she designed that's just as classy !!!! So wonderful to meet two people who are truly kind hearted and down to earth.

I'm a gear head and have collected many cars over the years. One of my dream cars would be a 1972 -74 Buick Electra 225 Convertible. Looking to make a highway cruiser out of it.
Great choice! The Electra always looks badass on the road. I don’t see many of them around anymore, not even at shows. It would be cool to see one cruising down the highway. I hope when I do, it’s you in the drivers seat! 💪

I’ve had 2 SS MCs and 1 LS in my lifetime and I can honestly tell you they are my favorite GM cars! This MC SS is a beautiful build! My God! That car is beautiful! I own a G-body that’s pretty rare. I decided years ago to make it something that I wanted, even though it may lose value. But, it’s mine, and I enjoy driving it, and don’t plan on stopping making it better

You got the best 3-g bodies combine together ss Monte Carlo gnx 442 Olds 👍👍👍
I've long said Chevrolet should have single turbo charged and intercooled the 86 and 87 Monte SS with that 305. The 305 would have been a great candidate for SFI injection and a modest turbo. The Monte SS would have been a bigtime contender because all the aftermarket upgrades were already their to support bigtime power.
That would have been next level. 🆙

I have a 85 monte carlo too,that I want to restore if I can ever afford to do it again.They are the best cars.
Its very close to the dream i had for the 85 MCSS I bought when i was 13 that was an abandoned project and needed a full restoration. I bought a 350 block and a t5 and a few other parts, did things here and there but never fully commited to it.
It makes me sad i failed and never got it on the road and it was a big source of shame that ruined my love of cars for a long time
The Monte SS in my mind is the business man's muscle car.

Nice mean looking Monte! I guess I’m wired different though. I still don’t understand and will never ever understand why some people get certain cars and make thousands of modifications to it. Would you change a Ferrari? A Grand National? Yeah, the Monte Gbody doesn’t have a lot power, yeah it should’ve had this and that, but for me personally, I like it the way it is. I love my Gbody (Not a Monte) it has no juice, but it’s 1000 % stock!!! And it’s staying that way forever!

I knew they made them, had to look it up. 81 was only turbo v6 monte far as I can tell. What a shame. Buick didnt get it right with hot air cars by then. If they had made an 87 turbo it would be 1 of the top gbodies.

I want to ask you a question I got a person to selling a 85 Monte Carlo SS up in Staunton Illinois and he's asking for 19,000 for it is that too much?
Opinion, it depends on the condition More importantly, it depends on you. A certain car can be priceless to an owner because it has meaning to them. If you’re dream has been to own an ‘85 Monte Carlo and now you have your chance and you can afford it… we say, chase your dream.

I always wondered why the Buick got a turbo and the Chevrolet got a measly 170hp.
That car is super nice but I would really take it back to the body/paint guy and have him line up them doors properly the body lines are off because of it and it's easy to notice especially on a black car....

Hi Clayton! Thanks for watching. Mike used the stock 87 rims and had them chromed.
Think he mentioned the fronts are stock size and rears were cut and widened.
Is this the same guy with the Grand National
Not sure. Mike has a few projects, but I don’t recall a Grand National being one. 🤷♂️
