Jeffostroff, I appreciate you sharing your deep knowledge, no only on how to fix leaks with care and thoroughness, but also for explaining the safety factor behind the industry standards and design for the system of pipes under the sink. Thank you!
I woke up this morning and found dirty water under my kitchen sink. Never having replaced a sink drain, I started searching for help and found your video. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Not only do I now understand what I have to do, and it doesn’t seem too challenging, but I also know why it failed in the first place-the builder used the cheapest of everything here, including plumbing parts. I’m off the hardware store to get quality parts and do it right this time. Thanks again!!
@@jeffostroff Not yet. Everything went well, but when I went to check the paper towel on the floor underneath the sink, it was wet. ☹️ It’s leaking between the porcelain sink and the new drain (around the plumber’s putty, I assume). I tightened that huge nut under the connection to the sink a bit. The whole think moved a bit, and some more putty came out in the sink, so I’m thinking I didn’t get the new drain perfectly straight.... I’ll take it apart and do it if it’s still leaking. This is why I hate anything related to plumbing. Electricity? No problem. Plumbing? Yuck. Thanks again for your video. It was really helpful!

My son and I were just going to start this job and decided to watch the video first . We didn’t have a universal wrench so we are getting one now. Glad we didn’t start this without watching you first . Thanks
Not so much genius anymore! God for the demo, but we are finding now that these pieces of garbage are failing after weeks of use, they start cracking. Something wrong with the transparent plastic. The white plastic P-traps have no failures at all.
I gotta say that this is probably the best instructional video on TH-cam! Seriously, straight forward and to the point. You just saved me a ton of money! Thank you sir!
One trick I use to check for leaks is to use a piece of Scott blue paper shop towel. When the towel gets damp the wet area on the towel goes from light blue to dark blue. If you lay a piece of the blue towel underneath the sink, it's really easy to see where the leak is coming from. This is especially important under the sink since it's dark. It can be hard to see wet marks on a white paper towel. I also take a piece of the blue towel and wipe around all of the joints. If the towel changes color, I know there is a leak at that point.
Funny you mentioned that because I just did exactly that two days ago at my friends house. I've been using the blue shop towels because they show the water a little better than the white paper do
Great video. A very Key bit of information you did not mention is how tight to get the new drain “flange” nut. I am pretty sure I originally tightened mine too tight and it squeezed out most of the putty and a year later I had a leak. I also realized mine did not come with the cardboard piece. Your music? Drowned out that Very Crucial information. Thanks for the info. As a woman rebuilding a house from the inside out for the last two years… I am constantly learning the details that I overlooked.

Woke up this Saturday morning and found that exact problem. And this is the first video I see to fix it which boost my confidence. Thank you so much !! It helped 💯
Thanks for showing that universal tool for removing the old heat and dried putty nut which is so thin you cant get a regular wrench of any kind to grab and turn it and like you said, the hammering thing just spins the sink basket drain once its loosened. Im a 68 yr old widow on low SS check, so I either fix it myself or it doesnt get fixed. Thanks again this video was long but very helpful!!
Wow, i came for the repair but was amazed by the musical soundtrack! Who else? Right?! Kinda felt like I was in Stranger Things episode as u went thu the motions. Well done! Made a chore enjoyable. I give a great big up vote for ur best musical score for a utube presentation.
Thank you this was clear and easy to follow, installation was quick !!!!! What took me so long was taking off the old leaky drain that was a different model, I got the nut off but the bottom part was still stuck and wouldn’t come off. After bending the bottom frame for 30 minutes I was able to get it off. I bought the new model drain you showed and it was so easy to install! Again thanks for the video you saved me some money!!!!!
Awesome Jayce yes you are right sometimes taking off the old hardware can be a real nightmare. There's been times rush spent a 1/2 hour or an even an hour I'll try to get way up behind the sink faucet and with years of water dripping down on it everything's all rusted and you can't get anything to budge
Hey, very much appreciate your thoughtful video. I did this job thirty years ago on the sink but needed a reminder to the steps I should take to do it again. Your detailed instructions along with the suggestions for the most correct wrench to use and very pleasant manner give me more confidence to get this job done correctly. I hate plumbing!
I needed a plumber's putty 101! Thanks. 👍 At 120 lbs, I can do it with no wrench & see vast improvement. A rusty pan was catching funk when I moved in. I tossed it & put sealant on it. 2 years on, my "fix" is failing, and I refuse to call my landlord. I'll just get pissed when he tells me tape & a rusty pan are perfect. It's insulting. I've seen his place. It's impeccable.
I just removed/replaced my 2 sink strainers yesterday. Even having the proper tools to loosen the large 'nut' on the bottom, it was so rusted, it wouldn't move. Less than 3 minutes with a Dremil tool/cutting wheel cut through the metal ring to spread with a screwdriver and peel off. Basin strainer lifted up and out of the sink. Just pay attention to the angle/depth so you don't cut into your sink.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’m a DYI’er but not experienced in plumbing. Your video is perfect, as a first time homeowner I’m sure I’ll need your help again sometime. Liked and subscribed!
I'd never attempted a plumbing repair before, but after watching this video I was able to fix a leak caused by a broken slip nut and reseat the strainer basket (which I knocked out trying to get the broken nut off... man that thing was tough). Thanks!
Thanks Jeff. Discovered a 'licensed contractor' hadn't installed the securing ring on straight! One question: why not silicon caulk rather than plumbers putty?
Thanks. First time fixing a kitchen sink leak. For those searching for parts, what he called a top hat washer for the tailpiece, I found it at Home Depot site as drain pipe flange washer
My sink drain basket has a very slow leak. It looks to have the cardboard ring issue. Would you recommend to just try tighten it or spray flexseal on it or should I replace the sink drain basket?
If the cardboard got wet, it's end of life, so a new strainer is what I would do, they are so inexpensive anyway. Even if you decide not to replace the strainer, you still need to remove it first because you have water coming through the flange due to plumber's putty breaking down. So you have to remove the strainer basket first form the sink, scrape off all putty from strainer and the spot on the sink where it seals, then apply new plumbers putty and install new strainer basket.
Thanks for this. Our kitchen sink went from acceptable "weeping" from the drain to outright leaking from the drain. In our area, plumbers are so busy that we couldn't reach anyone in person, and some of their voicemail messages indicated that they were booked out for weeks. So, I started looking into how to fix the leak myself. I found this video, and although I wouldn't characterize myself as being handy, once I bought all of the tools and parts, I was able to fix the leak myself easily with about a 10 minute effort.
Thanks so much for this video, including the helpful links to parts on Amazon. This made the job a breeze. I didn't buy the circular wrench, just the "half" wrench. I probably won't use it again for years, so having both would've been overkill.
Yes, that's fine, that circular wrench even though it is the best out there, is HUGE, I don't even keep in my tool bag, leave it home in the big plumbing tote bin of parts, because I rarely use it. In fact, 2 weeks ago I also used the half wrench to remove an old kitchen strainer before installing a garbage disposal!
It is amazing how many plumbers don't know this period period but in reality a lot of times they just put stuff together and leave and not know that these problems persist after they are gone and a lot of times you're not getting the master plumber who shows up you're getting an assistant or journeyman
@@jeffostroff I did my strainer just like the video and now it’s a weird days later and plumber putty keeps slowing seeping back up. Did I use too much you think? Or not crank that thing down enough?
Your vid was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! Tbh, the background music was horrific and unnecessary. I'll go buy a wrench and a gasket kit and get this fixed today.👍
Thanks Jeff, BUT you just repeated what you see from the directions offered from the strainer package. Step 1. Remove old strainer. LOL This is where you run into most problems especially when working on a sink that might be 10 to 30 years old plus. What do you do when you try to spin that big nut off and either the whole basket turns or the nut has welded itself to the basket threads? These are the type of situations you might have addressed. I ran into this problem on a 35 year old bathroom sink where pipe wrenches, vise grips and heat would not break the nut. i ended up using an angle grinder to split the nut and knock it off with a chisel. That Step 1. "Remove the " " in directions applies to all types of situation where a part has to be replaced, plumbing, autos, frozen corroded nuts and bolts and screws, etc. It is often the hardest part of the job. Thanks enjoy your videos.
Yup, what you did is exactly what I have done on toilet bolts that were frozen in place. We put up a video for that before. Next time we encounter a rusted sink drain nut, we'll show all the tricks to get it off.
@@jeffostroff LOL And you know step 1 said "Remove old toilet tank". Yes I used a reciprocating saw to get those off and you know some bathrooms they cram those toilet in tight spaces. Some fun
@@dkupy100 I never remove the tank, no reason to. I vacuum out the tank and the bowl with my shop vac, loosen the bolts, lift the entire old toilet up 3" off the floor, set it on my rolling flatbed cart, and take it away. No reason at all to remove the tank.
@@drummerjoey003 Make sure that you have put enough plumbers putty all the way around the drain flan drop top of the sink before you set it down you should see the putti oozout
You should also look at the amount of items you are storing under your sink. I've repaired mine several times over several years and after investigating why its keeps leaking I discovered that I have too much stuff under the sink. Evertime I move something around to get to something else I noticed that the drain pipe gets bumped. Over time this bumping causes enough of a shift that it breaks the water tight seal of the putty which allows water to seep through.

Woke up this Saturday morning and found that exact problem. And this is the first video I see to fix it which boost my confidence. Thank you so much !! It helped 💯
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Sarah, awesome, glad you found our video useful, and more power to ya taking this on yourself DIY!
This video is as concise as it gets. 🙏💪💪💪💪
Thank you so much for this video. I applaud your knowledge step by step and fixed my sink. Your the best man.
Michael, thanks for stopping by to see our video, I'm glad you liked it.
Wow, i came for the repair but was amazed by the musical soundtrack! Who else? Right?! Kinda felt like I was in Stranger Things episode as u went thu the motions. Well done! Made a chore enjoyable. I give a great big up vote for ur best musical score for a utube presentation.
Lol others think it's too loud, but anyway we changed our production techniques since then and dont have music overpowering the narration.
This video was spot on and accurate. You did an extraordinary job and I fixed my sink drain easily. Thank you
Great to hear!
Hey Jeff thanks for sharing. Awesome and clearly demonstrated. Appreciate that bud!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching Ralph
Thank you! Great video! Just finished and your video helped me tremendously!!
Awesome, glad to help out!
Yes, once a leak has gone on too long we have seen what you just described.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’m a DYI’er but not experienced in plumbing. Your video is perfect, as a first time homeowner I’m sure I’ll need your help again sometime. Liked and subscribed!
Thank you sir! My old strainer would not come off so I had to resort to my super strength lol but other then that came out perfect!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching Jose
Awesome video Jeff very thorough coming from a single mom who fixed it herself with help of her daughter..
Glad it helped
I love your video s. Helps alot thanks keep it going
Thanks, glad you liked it
Thanks Jeff. You also helped this single momma out too😎 thank you for your service!
Great help and thorough - many thanks for making me look a hero!
Yes sir glad to help out glad it worked out for you!
I'd never attempted a plumbing repair before, but after watching this video I was able to fix a leak caused by a broken slip nut and reseat the strainer basket (which I knocked out trying to get the broken nut off... man that thing was tough). Thanks!
Glad to help Mike!
Thanks Jeff. Discovered a 'licensed contractor' hadn't installed the securing ring on straight! One question: why not silicon caulk rather than plumbers putty?
Some plumbers prefer silicone, but you have to wait 30 minutes or more before you can test, so they don't want to hang around.
Way to go bob!
i really should have been to trade school. with my college debt and unemployment i cant afford a plumber so here i am lmaoooooo
Thank you so much for the clear instructions! So pleased to have fixed the drain leak myself.
who else is here cause daddy wasn’t there?
😂😂😂😂😂
Daddy is here cause daddy's daddy isn't here.
Daddy?😢
Me!
To take me to the fair 😂
This video is perfect! I followed it step by step to replace the basket strainer and stop a small leak.
Great job Sir!!👏👏👏✊ All the best for you ✊
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great demonstration Jeff. I appreciate you taking the time to do this.
Glad it was helpful!
This video worked great. Just recently bought a new house and had a plumber out twice. This helped me get a win on my own! Thank you
It is amazing how many plumbers don't know this period period but in reality a lot of times they just put stuff together and leave and not know that these problems persist after they are gone and a lot of times you're not getting the master plumber who shows up you're getting an assistant or journeyman
@@jeffostroff I did my strainer just like the video and now it’s a weird days later and plumber putty keeps slowing seeping back up. Did I use too much you think? Or not crank that thing down enough?
Could not find link for special wrench to loosen/tighten strainer basket nut.
Jim, We had it listed right there in the description, here it is: Superior Tool Universal Sink Drain Wrench: amzn.to/2BSSuRv
Great instructional video. I was able to fix my sink and learn the importance of them trap (how much water should be there). Thank you
Good video but you didn't need the background music so loud, it makes it hard to hear you.
Yes, we plan to redo this one soon.
Your vid was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Tbh, the background music was horrific and unnecessary.
I'll go buy a wrench and a gasket kit and get this fixed today.👍
Outstanding video: clear and helpful. With your help, I was able to replace my leaky kitchen sink strainer with no problems! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
@@jeffostroff In the poor side of town people just want a cracked tank replaced not the whole toilet.
You are an absolute legend for this video! Thank you!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
I am about to "fix" this leak for the 3rd time this year...
Why does it keep leaking? Maybe the large nut is not tight enough so the drain flange is shifting? These can be tough ones to nail down.
Chris S, I am in the same boat.
Same here 😒😭
@@drummerjoey003 Make sure that you have put enough plumbers putty all the way around the drain flan drop top of the sink before you set it down you should see the putti oozout
Watched this and successfully replaced my drains! Thank you
Lose the music !😵💫
just bought both tools with your link. great video, glad I can give you some credit for it.
Background music is lit don’t listen to what anyone says
It just needed better control over the levels
