Oh man, I still remember my last day of competitive rugby. Tried to tackle a 120+ youth national team guy (I was around 90 at the time). Almost static, aiming quite low, but the last things I remember is a blue sky and a free falling sensation :) Hit the field badly with the back of the head, blacked out for a few seconds, got substituted with an injury. Probably got a concussion, as it was really hard to focus on things like reading or computer for almost a month after. At the time, I just started to work as a junior researcher and decided to call it a day :) I just do not want to know how those hits feel :)

I know all this makes great viewing, but it also highlights the level of trouble our game is in. I went to watch an Under-17 game recently and winced at some of the massive hits that young players who've been brought up on a diet of protein, Strength & conditioning, and supplements put on each other. It was actually very uncomfortable watching and many of those players are on their way to considerable injury later in life from those kind of massive hits.

For context, this is VERY similar to American Football, but with a few differences that change the dynamic of the game, making it more cursive, with less interruptions, but also a lot slower. You can only pass behind, you are only allowed to tackle below the chest line (no arm grabbing or shoulder pushing) and you are not allowed to tackle opponents who don't have the ball. The player holding the ball IS allowed to push and tackle above, but only with the hand holding the ball(for example if he tucks the ball in his armpit, he can use that shoulder as a battering ram). For a touch down, the player has to place the ball on the ground, not toss it down, that's why you see them diving so much. Well, also a lot less protective gear and it's played by real men, but that's another discussion. You might not be able to tell, because they are all big and there's no reference, but they are all built like tanks.

Rugby guys have to run around while physically tired and worn out for 80 minutes - power meets endurance. Also, the helmets and padding (and rules) allow ferocious tackles in the NFL - remove the helmets and padding, etc, and remove attack, defense, and specialist teams and then you'd have something more similar to rugby and comparable. Imagine if NFL team was halved in numbers and that players had to play the entire game and play unprotected - they'd soon change their style of play and players. Likewise with rugby, if they had pads and helmets etc.
