One man that put fear in almost everyone that played against him and I am surprised he didn’t make the list is Isitolo Maka.
Always was very impressed by Tuilagi running right over Horg an, Horgan was a big winger and not remotely considered a soft player and he got completely ragdolled by the samoan.

I played with Brian, he was a beast but hated training , any fitness training he disappeared lol. They made him do it he played terrible so they let him do what he wanted in training as long as he brought it at game time n boy did he

Sure Jonah Lomu was probably in the top 3 rugby players of any era but to my mind not one of those players who would unleash bone crushing tackles. Lomu would either run through or over the opposition. Also include Etzebeth and Botha in this category. They are more prone to lose control in skirmishes and therefore looked intimidating but mostly you don't see them flying horizontal into the opposition. The top five rarely scary enforcers would be Chabal, Collins, Tuilagi, Tuisova and Burger.

Bakkies gave Matt Stevens a slap in a scrum and Stevens got 14 stitches, came back on next scrum another slap and 8 stitches popped and it wasnt over there as he begged then captain John Smit for one more.

A lot of these guys are basically enforcers rather than actual players similar to what you’d get in ice hockey they do make the game more exciting though

Chabal was overrated. He faded against tough opposition. Put in one or 2 good tackles against the AB, but got smashed more often than he would like to admit.
Henry Tuilagi was straight up monster, he should be nr 1 for sure.
Jonah would have been No1 for me. He was a true juggernaut that inspired respect from all players on the field

No need to fear dirty players. They will end up getting carded and ruin the game for their team. As a french i was fearing Lomu because he was not only a beast, he was incredibly efficient. Chabal was fun but did not contribute nearly as much as Lomu. He was the most feared guy to play against in my memory.

I'm French and i love Chabal but Jonah Lomu should be Number one.Lomu had a unique combination of power, size and speed that made him devastating with the ball in hand. He weighed 120 kg and was 1.96 metres tall, but could run 100 metres in 10.8 seconds.

My old Rugby Coach played with Botha on the International Circuit and said he was the nicest guy in the world until he stepped onto the pitch. He said it was like a switch got turned on in his head and you could just tell he wasn't going to be happy until he buried the entire opposing team including their fans!
What an honour to play with that calibre... You can see it in the interview at the end, he isn't mean in the core. But dudes like that can flip pretty hard on the field in my experience.

Just have a look at what Lequizamon and Jerry Collins did to him - and just like that he was nowhere in the games. He based most of his reputation for one or 2 string tackles and a WC try against Namibia. Sorry, I don't rate him as a "hard man". The real hard men of rugby would've eaten him for breakfast.

I'm Canadian and grew up with hockey, I literally learned to skate and play on a pond in my backyard. Hockey is without a doubt one of the fastest brutal team sports there is; however, I've just discovered Rugby and man talk about aggressive and brutal, it's a blast to watch.

They would literally be killed. Never in the history of rugby will there ever be anyone comparable to Bo Jackson, Larry Allen, James Harrison, Jerome Bettis and the list goes on.
