I'm a gay Mexican who grew up dirt poor with a drug addicted Parent and watching this movie made me ball my eyes out.

    • @evony6795
      @evony6795 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

ooo man I feel ya, childhood similar to that we weren't poor per say but it definitely wasn't easy, plus being bullied through elementary for being hairy for a girl and being the only mexican in my grade . Mixed in with discovering I was asexual, and one time in class being told to write an essay about a boy you like. And my little self, raising my hand and saying out loud to everyone and the teacher, "But what if I don't like boys or girls?" Getting laughed by everyone in class, even by the female teacher. And just being told to 'pretend' .Of course it just got better, got abused later on while still in elementary (dont want to talk about it) all that just caused me to be basically a outcast, who never had many friends and was the quiet one in class. Uptil now where a emotionally shut, and depressed 25 year old.
I haven't watched this movie but now seeing about what it's about I think I will it understand it painfully all too well. Cant wait to watch it. Sorry for the long post just want you to see you're not alone, I feel your pain too.

Alexandria Corley-West What's stereotyping about a upper middle class African American Fatal Attraction -esque thriller? There's a difference between it being a bad or lazy film, and perpetuating negative stereotypes.

what the hell are yall saying black films are supported by white racists jews. This is dysfunctional. Black men are being per trade as emasculated. This does not doing anything to enlighten black people to be constructive. Only the to practice same sex. where are the movies that make blacks people look constructive. Why they can't make a movie about blacks controlling the economics in their communities. Why they can't make movies about blacks governing themselves smh

You could check out "Der Bunker" if you're into really crazy and surreal stuff or "der nachtmahr" and they say that "goodnight mommy" is a pretty good horror movie, I haven't seen that one yet, but all in all I'm not usually a big fan of german productions. There's only a handful of german movies that I liked.

ugh!!!.. as an African American, Hispanic,Native American, French and Irish man and last but not least HUMAN; I found this movie amazing. I identified with many chunks of Shiron's ( the quest for identity) and Kevin's ( finding appeasement in the ordinary) life. normally i can keep back the water works as I watch movies with my lady. Initially, I started to tear , my lady went to the bathroom, i covered my face and started crying heavily. As my lady walked in she immediately asked, "what is wrong?" I told her I was crying, she didnt believe me until I took my hands from my face... ugh just ugh I'm enamored with this movie.

Finally received Moonlight in my city this weekend. More than worth the wait! I didn't read/watch any reviews beforehand. Completely agree with Alonso's points. The emotional impact of the film really does hit you at the very end in such a beautifully understated and heartbreaking way. Easily in my top five for the year!

I thought it was really good but it was a bit like Boyhood where I don't quite see how it has *that* high of a Metacritic rating (for the record, I think it's far better than Boyhood). It's exceptionally well-made, but there's no real emotional payoff to it at all and the third act is much weaker than the preceding two

I agree. Now that I´ve watched it: it is one of the most perfectly made films ever. A deserving and outstanding 99 out of 100 in Metacritic says it all. I never thought it was going to be this flawless, simple and complex, easy, pleasant. Grows after it ends. More and more. Everything just flows and the feelings are so relatable and perfectly shown... 10/10.

This film is real-life for some people and a story that should be told, HOWEVER, I am not pleased that the MORE IMPORTANT film, BIRTH OF A NATION, is being maligned. Birth of a Nation is an important part of AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY. Being gay is not just an African-American story. I am heartbroken that Birth of a Nation is being overshadowed, maybe on purpose.

This is one of those movies that gets great reviews by critics the world over but I found myself pretty bored watching it. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, but it didn't really click for me. I wish it would have been maybe the teenage years the entire time. I never really knew what this guy wants out of life apart from wanting the guy that he's been in love with since his youth. It's like he's been sleepwalking through life just waiting for that phone call. I just didn't feel this movie like everyone does I guess.

I'm a fair movie reviewer and these critics are over-rating this movie just like they did Fruitville Station. I guess they have to find a way to give black people some kind of reward. The movie wasn't bad, but it wasn't something I found to be fascinating. Of course, the film went to the stereotypical poor black kid with a drug addict mother, but takes a turn when he finds out he's gay. I'm sorry, but the film is over-rated. Omar Little in "The Wire" was gay and that character owned it. I don't think you're missing out if you don't see this movie. Before those scream at me screaming racist I loved 12 Years a Slave, Coming to America, and Friday and all those films were black movies.

I completely understand where all the love for this film is coming from. But I do hear what you're saying. I'm in the troupe that thought Fruitvale Station was a little overhyped.

Movie was alright.. definitely doesn't live up to the hype.. i found a some problems with the film..the circling/shaky camerawork was annoying.. very slow pacing... some important characters the movie just left them to dry.. did not care for the actor who played the 3rd Chiron.. didn't look nothing like him and the feeling wasnt there like it was with the first two Chirons... overall it left me feeling that i wanted more... B- movie

I just watched it and was terribly let down. Everything about this film felt weak - the interactions, the screenplay, the camera work - ugh. It felt like it was made by a college student or an amateur filmmaker. I love the idea for the story but there wasn't enough 'oomph' to the screenplay. There were times where I felt like certain scenes should've had more attention given to them or lingered on a bit longer, particularly involving Mahershala Ali who I have no idea why his performance was nominated as he was barely in the film and his one 'big scene' could've been done by anyone - ultimately his character needed more screen time for me. Naomie Harris was very good though I'll say that and the middle section of the film was the strongest point. It just felt like this powerful coming of age story about a young gay black man growing up in a world dominated by toxic masculinity and insecurity could've had more going for it. It's a mediocre film but by no means a best picture contender in my mind. Very rarely do I say that a film isn't long enough but this just felt too short - I wanted more. The filmmaker seemed to want to give this film a Terrence Malick existential treatment but ultimately it felt hacky and focused too much on visuals and not enough on script.

As a 12-13 year old kid, one of the neighborhood bad boys seduced me. He made me take off my clothes and we had non-intercourse, heavy petting sex for well over 2 hours. It led to us having sex EVERYDAY, I Mean, EVERYDAY for 2 1/2 years. He was older. And then one day he stopped and pursued his heterosexual nature, with my first cousin, no less. It remains the most erotic experience I had in puberty and beyond. There is a lot more sexual experiences between boys than most would ever cop to.

The Prince like the same exact movie except he isn't gay? Well then that would be a totally different movie in istelf. Who knows if that movie would've been as well crafted and well recieved. Him being gay is a big part of the movie. Being different and an outsider. It's a different story. It wouldn't have the same impact.

It gets 4 stars out of 4 for me.I thought it was a very good film, with some fine performances from the actors. The three Chiron's were excellently brought to life.It was beautifully shot, and has a very intimate tone which I really appreciated.Being a black gay guy myself it really hit home on some points. The one thing I was just a bit disappointed with was the ending.I would like to have seen more physical intimacy between the adult Chiron and his friend.(Done in a tasteful way of course) I appreciate the subtlely of their connection at the end but considering all that Chiron and Kevin went through I think it would have been a more satisfying conclusion to see that as adults they could both finally be who they truly are.I'm not sure if the actors were uncomfortable with taking their connection further or the writers directors etc but I felt that perhaps they played it a bit safe. All that being said It's still a great groundbreaking movie which I'd highly recommend.

Robin Drake Actually here's a new take. In Act 3 Chiron is now selling drugs. This means that the character is completely oblivious that the act of selling drugs is also ruining another person's childhood in the same manner drugs ruined his. Also on that subject, in all likelihood his mentor Juan also likely died because of that profession, but it was not disclosed on how he died. So selling drugs is also something his mentor would've likely not have condoned Chiron doing as an adult. I understand they wanted to show masculinity but from a psychological standpoint it's a huge flaw. I'm also a victim of a parent's drug use and the abuse(verbal/physical) that followed. Which is why anyone who grew up like that and seeing Chiron do that as an adult is conflicting.
