    I don't think I have EVER smiled at a movie more in my life. Or at least at a contemporary film. I smiled so hard and for so long that I came out of the theater with my face hurting and a killer headache. It handles homage absolutely perfectly. The references to other classic musicals aren't shot for shot recreations but just play with the images and aesthetics from the movies they reference. I've been listening to the soundtrack/score non-stop since I saw it on Saturday, and the genius of the music doesn't really hit you until you've listened through it a couple times. The melodies are genius and complement each other perfectly and intertwine with each other from song to song. I can't say enough good things.
    Fair warning: Bring. Tissues.
    Extra fair warning: When listening to the soundtrack in public places AFTER seeing the movie... Bring. Tissues.

    shouldn't they be comparing their scores to the average rotten tomatoes score instead of the percentage?

    • @HobtheGoblin
      @HobtheGoblin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      consider me ignorant, is the rotten tomatoes score not an average of all their reviews?

    • @Darwinfeeshy
      @Darwinfeeshy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nope, if a critic score is below 5/10 it gives a "rotten tomato" for the movie. If a critics score is above 5/10, then it gets a "fresh tomato for the movie".
      The percentage you see on Rottentomatoes is the percentage of reviews that are above 5/10.

    • @fhf148
      @fhf148 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HobtheGoblin it's the percentage of the critics that liked the movie, it's pretty black and white. while the other score is the average of all critics on a scale of 1-10

    • @HobtheGoblin
      @HobtheGoblin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I see, so it's 95% of critics were positive about this movie. Rather than averaging a 95 out of 100 score. I see. Never knew that, and interesting system, but you're right it's atypical next to the 9.7 average score they give in the video.

    • @fhf148
      @fhf148 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      HobtheGoblin correct, a movie with a percentage the 90s could avg a 7, while a movie in the 70s could avg the same thing.

      Nah, I saw this coming a mile away. This is exactly the kind of thing they like, because it's fun and different. You can see the wear of seeing so many movies as a job with their reviews of more serious stuff. And in turn we usually get short changed by a really dreary, lifeless, jaded and nitpicky review of a lot of the serious dramas that others are raving about. Wasn't always like that, but yeah, they're kind of a bummer now

    • @CRITstudios
      @CRITstudios 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I mean, that's understandable to a degree but it just seems like that sort of attitude will only lose them subscriptions and views. Although, I also get wanting to have their own legit reviews and not just pouring verbal glitter on it just for views and subs too. Maybe they should take a few months off and come back refreshed? Maybe then they won't be so dour all the time.

    I haven't been much of a musical person in my adult life, but the fact I ended the year with Sing Street and La La Land, I don't think I can say that anymore. Sing Street has fantastic music from whatever genre and then is a fantastic comedy. if you haven't seen it, even if you hate musicals I'd watch it. La La Land just made me feel every emotion, the ending especially, I also I'm not into romance films but the chemistry of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone was captivating, believable and relatable in parts. I don't come From L.A., so I didn't really see the "love letter to L.A.", I seen it as a love letter to Classic Hollywood. It was littered with nods to classic movies and musicals. So it's enjoyable for people outside of L.A., because it's not solely about L.A., you don't need to love musicals, but you do need to not hate them to enjoy this film. whereas sing street doesn't feel like a musical, so you could watch it solely for the comedy aspect.

    I appreciate the craft that goes into musicals, but I can never get into them just because the style of music they have (showtunes or whatever it's called) just isn't my thing at all. But I still can't wait to see this.

      yeah I don't think you need to be into musicals to enjoy it. I don't like them either which is why I hesitated to watch it. It's a good charming movie. I loved the purple twilight scenery mixed with the jazz music which I didn't know I liked until I saw the movie. And Ryan and Emma's chemistry was very genuine.

    I saw the film today. Christie is right, they hype doesn't do the film justice. It's my favorite film of the year. The story is simple, but it's told so well and so beautifully. It's such a good movie. Only Moonlight is on par with La La Land. Overall it's been a terrible year for film but I would gladly wait sit through 11 months of crap to eventually get La La Land. Go see it!!!

  • @g.mitchell7110
    @g.mitchell7110 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Huh. I may have to give this a chance after all. I saw a trailer at the theater last month, the one with Gosling singing a ballad, and decided it wasn't for me. In that particular song, at least, Gosling is pretty bad, and I thought it was another bad singer in a singing part (Russel Crowe, Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, etc.), and if this is what they choose to promote their movie . .
    I'm one of those who loves musicals, and probably tends to be more harsh as a result. Mediocre to bad singing has ruined many modern movie musicals for me. Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables, Mama Mia. Why not raid Broadway and get good actors who are also good singers?

    • @mcwyman7928
      @mcwyman7928 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      G. Mitchell I thought the fact that the singing and dancing weren't picture perfect worked here because it makes it more accessible. Also, they're not trying to recreate a beloved Broadway show. This is an original movie with an original score. I'm a hardcore theatre nerd, and this movie is genius.

    I've only seen it once, and will see it again, and agree with the panel, it's a great movie, but the frequent comparisons to Singin' in the Rain, it's not on the level of that classic. Singing and dancing especially. Yes, Matt says it doesn't matter, but, it's... a... musical, a musical, and nothing's as amazing as a ... I digress. The score is glorious - will be listening to Another Day of Sun and Someone in the Crowd on repeat for the holiday.
    Read Amy Nicholson's review for a more tempered view, but definitely go see it on the big screen, I'm not praising it as much as WTF did, but this movie is eons better than most of the dreck released this year.

    ok if you're into musicals (& i aint,) i get it. but from what i've seen so far this looks like one of those critics movies like "the artist", "pitch perfect" or to a small extent 'frozen' that reviewers fawned over but can gyrate on (my &) everybody other adult person's nervs. but it's got that gosling geezer in it, so it might well be substantive, i'll see.

    I love the movie but I can't express how much it means to hear someone actually mention about Ryan goslings singing and how the dance doesn't hold a candle to gene Kelleys dancing .

    I really liked this movie, but it was far from perfect. I liked the end, but the rest of the movie never got dark enough to make it as impactful as say the moment in 10 Years.

    Seems like Christy doesn't like anything too much these days, unless it's a whimsical comedy, musical, or Disney/Pixar cartoon.. Which is fine, but now that I know that, I'm inclined to take her opinion on thrillers and dramas less serious

      Nothing racist about it. It just wasn't good. Twelve Years a Slave, Coming to America and Friday were black movies and they were great. Moonlight was just another stereotypical black movie with insert "gay" back story here.

    what the fuck kind of review is this? calm down. Why are you guys are scared to say anything bad about this? I think this movie is amazing btw, but still you guys are reviewers. Try to be objective? You seem to live in LA and are totally being biased for the stupidest things. I mean I think this is one of the best movies of the year too, but the vocal melodies seem a bit derivative of Disney movies and others, and I did scratch my head at some very minor things in the story. Again, even then it's an amazing movie.

    I wanted to love this movie. I really did. I think the cinematography is great, I love the color choices, the songs are wonderful and a delight. But the characters are just kinda there and I prefer when filmmakers take shots at or are at least self-deprecating of Hollywood and their profession; this was a little too self-important, borderline egotistical to me.

    We're musical lovers. The tune which we may have heard 4 or 5 times was un hummable as we left the theatre. There's some kool ade drinking here. The wife and I were thinking about walking out. The tunes were weak. Humm it for me please. The jazz purist - as a musician he's being a dick. What about Dixieland? Fusion? etc. We hoped for so much more. It was just crap.

I can imagine alot of ways to end this movie and they are all better than this. However, I have to admit that the montagu of the end is awesome and over all La La land is definitely the best movie in 2016.

    Pretty high scores. But I get the feeling that for someone who doesn't live in LA or just live and breathe movies, like many movie critics do, a lot of this movie loses its impact.
    A lot of movies about movies and actors are like that, actually.

    • @ZoeHewittHosting
      @ZoeHewittHosting 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about that when I was watching. I think it manages to transcend that because it's not about actors as much as following your dreams and how life takes you in different paths. It doesn't show the industry as coldly as some movies, like "Don't Think Twice" which came out earlier this year.

  • @LPantelakos

    A film critic should always be "that guy" no matter what Christy says, or any other person for that matter. Alonso, rewriting your review because it doesn't fit in with the opinion of your peers is blasphemy. Let us read that original draft, at least we know it's honest.
    And Matt, giving a perfect 10 to a movie you have "small quibbles" with makes no sense. That's what the point system is for.

    Honestly, the trailer doesn't look like a very good musical. I have no idea who wrote the songs. the stars are not known for their singing/dancing. The costumes don't look like much. It not from a famous musical. Nevertheless, I will see it based solely on their lavish praise.
