    this movie fucked me up. i don't mean to pull the "as a black gay guy" card...but as a black gay guy (lol), who grew up in a poor neighborhood, this is one of the first and only movies i've ever seen in my life that ever felt like it could have been me.

      I'm a gay white guy, so I can't even begin to pretend that I understand your experience growing up (Honestly, I can't understand anyone's experience but my own, because I'm not them) but this movie hit me hard. (I even cried again just now watching a reaction to it. lol) There was a series on Tubi called Coming Out that centered on a black gay kid growing up in a neighbored where he couldn't be safe to live as his authentic self. It was very low budget, not at all polished or brilliantly acted, but certainly watchable, and the story was gripping and raw and heartbreaking at times. Check it out if you haven't already. Be well, man. Wishing you a good life (for what that's worth coming from some stranger on the internet.) Peace!

      @@dignature123same, i was going to mention "brokeback mountain" as well😂then i got mad all over again remembering how it lost to crash. Brokeback definitely deserved that award. Yes, it did break societal barriers, but it's geninuely a well made movie with top notch acting. (It didn't deserve the mockery it got) and also, Heath Ledger being so mature and protective of the movie when it was the norm to mock homosexuality was also noteworthy. He refused to perform at the oscars because they made a brokeback joke in their skit. And he called homophobic opinions immature, boring and old😂

    One of the craziest parts about this film is that it was shot in its entirety in 25 days, and Naomie Harris (Chiron's mother) filmed ALL of her scenes in three days! To portray the journey her character goes through in only three days is mind blowing to me

  • @SnailHatan
    @SnailHatan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

    To me, the movie ending with them caressing rather than hooking up is so much more impactful and important. For a lot of gay men, and black men, and even just men in America, hypersexuality is kind of expected and stereotyped by society at large. Hook up culture is big enough in straight dating, but in the gay dating scene, it’s sooo difficult for people who want to find real romance because of that expected and projected hypersexuality.
    So the fact that instead of sex, or kissing, they just sit there in each other’s arms and don’t say a word feels so powerful and real, a true resolution to Chiron’s story.

  • @mariakal605
    @mariakal605 ปีที่แล้ว +162

    Regarding the ending - if it helps, Trevante Rhodes (who plays the adult Chiron) said this in an interview which really warmed my heart and really gave insight into what I think he was trying to convey with his acting in that scene: "I think about love on a scale from 1 to 10. Most of us find a 6 or a 7, and that’s why we have divorce. It’s the truth. We settle for that 6 or 7. But I like to think Kevin is Chiron’s 10. He’s found that and he realizes that there’s no reason to settle for a 6 or a 7 because, “I know this person is my 10. Whether or not this person believes I’m his 10, I’m going to devote my life to this person entirely.” That’s why the line where he says, “You’re the only man that’s ever touched me,” for me, was the most amazing, most beautiful thing I’ve seen in cinema, period. Because that’s what we strive for as people, to find that one person because they’re there. If Kevin doesn’t feel that they should be together, Chiron is just going to die a miserable person because that’s his person and he won’t settle for anything else. But I like to think they’re together, walking in Central Park hand-in-hand when they’re 90 years old."

      I both agree and disagree with the settling for a 7 thing. Some people definitely do that. But more and more these days, people won’t settle for anything less than “perfect”. They see a single red flag, a single bad habit, a single bad sentence, and they’re up and gone. Because you have so many more options with dating apps and social media, and there’s this message of red flags being doom to romance that just isn’t true.
      A 10 is someone who you stick with and work through the red flags and bad habits together. If you can’t even do that, you don’t deserve your 10. You gotta put in the time and love it takes to build and maintain a relationship. Most 7s can become 10s if you really love each other, instead of just expecting a perfect relationship from the start. Then there’s also something about chasing childhood idolized romances that is really dangerous, and I personally would have preferred Chiron to find someone who didn’t beat the shit out of him but hey.
      Ok rant over lol.

    I saw this film in the theaters. I think with the marketing they were trying not to reveal what the story was, but man, it was so upsetting to be in a major city in the US and have the audience, like legit a loud majority, audibly laughing when a traumatized little kid is asking if he's a fggt, having them make noises of mocking/disgust when he kisses his friend on the beach. The whole movie is just a person desperate to find some peace and happiness. Yet there is too many people that can't see, even an audience watching the whole story. the humanity in others who are different, it's very sad.

    Mahershala Ali plays such a beautiful, groundbreaking character in this movie. My mom always told me growing up, “find the helpers.” When you are alone, and need help, find the people who care. I feel like his character really personifies that ideation, even though he is far from perfect

    you might or might not have noticed water being a recurring symbol/motif in this movie. It’s first introduced when Juan teaches Chiron how to swim, then he draws himself a bath at home, as a teenager there’s the beach scene with Kevin and it’s also there when he dips his face in the sink filled with water as a teenager and then as an adult, and obviously the final shots of the movie where you can hear the ocean. Simply love that.

    one of my favorite motifs ever in film is the theme of black and blue throughout this movie!! The Black and Blue nicknames for Chiron and Juan, "in moonlight, black boys look blue", "your heart aint got to be black like mine, baby", black and blue because of the physical abuse and assault of Chiron, at the end Chiron and Kevin are wearing black and blue shirts! It even works as a double entendre, Chiron is at the intersection of race and sexuality, being black and gay, and those circumstances literally make him black (referring to race) and blue (referring to sadness). My number 1 movie of all time, i must say 🥲🥲

    I was also called homophobic remarks thru school... Rocks thrown at me, rumors about me etc. Was awful. I remember my mom put her sewing machine under my bed because she had no space and a few classmates found it when they were at my place and then told everyone at school that I use one to mock me for many years..
    The weirdest thing is im not even gay lol. I'm just like Chiron, empathic, sensitive, nice. I treat people like I want to be treated, and that makes people step on you and treat you like a doormat.
    But jokes on them now I'm a designer and make their whole salary in a day...
    If i could go back in time and change one thing I'd listen to Kevin's advice, you need to stand up for yourself. The way I was raised I thought being kind is the most important but it's not always.
    The only thing I hate is I still get nightmares about school, and it's been over a decade since I graduated...

    great film, what always stuck with me was the scene where his mother was yelling for him to give her the money to get drugged up, her acting was too good it had me hyperventilating and sobbing for what the poor boy had to go through because it felt so real. i liked the relationship between chiron and kevin because it was actually so realistic. people who have ever had friends that shared homoerotic tension with, know for a fact that it always stays with you for years( i know from personal experience haha) especially the trying to reconnect after years bc it does in fact happen outta the blue😂 This whole movie was pretty realistic.

    Thank you for this reaction. Moonlight is such an artistic masterpiece. The storytelling and direction are top tier and the cinematography is so original and beautiful, but for me it's the acting that blows me away the most. The children were all amazing actors, as were all the other actors, particularly Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali. But in the final scene between Kevin and Chiron it is Trevante Rhodes who blows me away--the scene is both devasting and beautiful. Chiron admitting that he has never been touched by anyone but Kevin--essentially admitting that he has always been completely alone--how hard it was for him to say that, especially for a man who barely speaks to start with--all of that shows on T.R.'s face and in his hesitant, quiet, superb delivery of the sparse lines. When he finally is able to rest his head on Kevin's shoulder, simply to feel another person close to him, and it being a person who actually knows who he is, it is supremely beautiful. Moonlight deserved every award it received and much more.

    I think it's rlly important to note why Juan has such a connection w Chiron. It's because he can relate to Chiron's feelings of "otherness" and being an outsider of sorts. Juan is a drug-dealer but he's also Afro-cuban, so these two things really isolates him from others. People don't see Juan as their "kind", since he's not African American. I think it's beautiful how they can relate to each other in that way. They've got each other, even if no one else is there for them.

Like the middle of the world, it just captured the feeling I dealt with often when shitty things would happen to me and there was no one there to help me out. The arts (nature as well) is what helped me get through what I went through, even today when I still struggle with the lasting affects of my childhood I listen to this movie soundtrack to help myself out! Even though I am not a part of the lgbtq community, i still find such a connection to the movie!

    Great reaction guys. You did the movie justice and were fantastic with picking up on all of the nuances and subtleties of the characters and plot. It's nice to see those not as familiar with the culture it represents still appreciate the telling of the story. For location purposes, Liberty City is a section/neighborhood of Miami.

    Barry Jenkins is a true visionary of masterpieces, a director that transcends it all.
    Not quite related but, he will also be directing the 2024 Lion King sequel titled Mufasa: The Lion King. So many people are bagging it already, but I and other artists have been lucky enough to chat with David Coleman (legend in his own right) working story boards and development on the film. He told us about Barry, his devotion to not only the story but his energy for storytelling, his vision for the film and building the entire plot from the ground up as its own original story. To go into it with fresh eyes and be prepared to be blown away if not that, just to take away something of visual value. As you can tell from Moonlight, Barry and his Body of work speaks for itself.

    The acting was amazing every character that they showed through the years felt like the same person… without seeing the inbetween you still felt like you understood why they changed. You got exposition without being knocked over the head with it.

    Maybe a slight relation to Blue for Juan and Black as a nickname for Chiron, but not likely in the way you think. It's not uncommon for black folks in neighborhoods to sometimes give nicknames based on complexion, especially for someone who isn't medium-toned...for example: Black, Red Man or Red, Yella (yellow) Boy, etc.

    I so love this movie. 34:05 Hi guys, so I'm super late watching this, and it's probably ridiculous to leave a comment now, BUT Kevin does not have a wife! 😊 I knew looking at you guys talk while they were discussing it, that he was no longer with Samantha, that you missed it. And you did. 😊 Love watching you guys! (I'm still bummed about not getting the last episodes of 'Not Okay', but hey, that's my problem.)
