@UCeXKtfMCzOBJaRZIOYa4M4g look like u misunderstood, project started in 1984, after that nothing happened majorly on project, during vajpayee gov lots of work done and that's why first flight was taken place but during UPA gov. The project was thrown into the dustbin, but after 2014 modi restarted it.
84 me project shuru hua to 84 me hi first flight nahi hoti, it takes lots of time for research and development. Biggest thing in it is that funds by the government. Indiraji then vajpayee and Modi funded the project on a serious level. Other government just ignored it. That's why it took that much time.

Project kabhi band nahi hua tha to restart again.. 2001 main first flight hui thi... We wanted to have indigious jet engine and project kaveri was started but it didn't meet the require thrust capability so we opt of genrel electric jet engines from UK... The fighter jet needs to meet certain standards and requirements given by its user in this case iaf and in terms of cutting edge weapon like fighter jets they can't go for sub-standard things.. And Tejas wasn't getting clearance certifications like IOC(initial operetinal clearance) and foc(final operational clearance...
The main challenge for India to develop fighter aircraft is manufacturing their own engines for Tejas series and AMCA program.

Tejas is good but they are like Seagulls of airplane world. Sturdy, resilient, fierce but limited in applications. What we really need are Eagles and Raptors, like AMCA which has been stalled for like decades.

MK2 will get upgrades as well. AMCA, TEDBF, and possibly MMRCA are the future in indigenous production line.

You said "barely be able to match Rafale", but you failed to mention in which category? If I add sortie rate, maintenance cost, availability rate, ruggedness, etc, Tejas comes out on top in all of these.
There is a reason that the concept of a hi-lo matrix exists. And it stands to reason that the first real attempt to built a modern fighter jet by a nation (that forget jets, at that point hadn't even designed cars) will always aim to build a fighter at the "lo" end of the "hi-lo" matrix. Hating on the jet just because it is at the lo end of the spectrum is a bit silly.

too bad to break the news but the engine is not made in India...even though made in India engine is 'almost' there but for some reason tejas engine is provided by GE from U.S.A. but they could use the Indian engine if they get government approval and still have a good usable plane

My Dear Friends: It is "TEJAAS" - "J" as in 'Japan'. Not the usual American pronunciation of J thinking everybody in the world pronounces like the how the Latin-Americans pronounce "J" (as "jay"). Japanese do not; and in India "J" is the most used alphabet in all the Indian languages. Always the "J" is "J" and not "hay". It is so painful within one minute of starting watching your episode, it sounds awkward.
