    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In his time of need, Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), calls out to God to help him and his prayer is answered when a mysterious man offers him water to drink.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik.

    Director: William Wyler

The Centurion's reaction i spot on. He is not shocked or scared or threatened, he has a look of pure realization on his face, like something has been made clear to him, like he just woke up and can't fathom that he had been dreaming all along. He also has a look of questioning, as if he is asking himself "What the hell am I doing?" It's as if he is more than just looking into Jesus, he is also looking into a mirror and seeing himself and the world very clearly for the first time.

No one talks about how much water was in that tiny little cup! He was chugging that water for a minute while Jesus stood there looking at the Roman. Not just compassion, but a miracle as well. I always loved that about this scene.

Yes, I've always felt that the Miracle of the Weddiing Feast was more about the water than the wine. Jesus said to fill the jugs w/ water and then it was said that the best "wine" was saved for last. Could be that the crowd had enough of the fruit of the vine, and were so thirsty and out of it (drunk) that the water actually was what satisfied them; ergo: saved the best for the last.

I believe that God in His Providence was able to use the men and women in this film, most of whom are unbelievers to convey a sense of the majesty of Jesus. It catches my breath away and elicits tears of astonishment. This scene is the most powerful I have ever witnessed in any setting, even church itself. We need to get back to this and we will when Jesus returns.

@@excellent952 Goes to show you that God can use anything for His purposes, whether the person is a believer or not. Could be that some connected w/ the film were believers, and some weren't, at the time of the filming. But that could have changed over time, as God worked in people's hearts. We trust God by faith to work as He pleases in situations like these.

In the actors' comments on the DVD version of Dr. Zhivago, Omar Sharif mentions a similar thing as Zhivago and his family watched the brutal slaying of the dragoons on the Christmas party night massacre of the demonstrators.....it's just a closeup of Zhivago's face in shock as he witnesses the chaos going on below, and then there is no actual excess carnage we see in today's videos, we just see a drum rolling away from the victims, a kid running, and audio of the chaos; and a few shots of blood on the ground; then the stark scene of a body being tossed in a cart and taken away. Less graphic depiction is actually more effective to convey the point of all the violence.

Sure you can look to great spectacles in detail on your 8k OLED/QLED whatever screen and see every single hair in detail.... technology is astonishing.... but the art of storytelling has gone the way of the library of Alexandria; burned down to the ground and the actors are raging on fans on twitter while tumbler writers are stuffing 'current day politics' (circus clowns) into movies. The scene was perfect. If you understand the training of the ancient roman army; the scene becomes more impressive. Ancient Roman soldiers were trained to be without empathy or compassion. Soldiers of the ancient world prided themselves on their cruelty, their indefference to the suffering of their fellow human being. They believed their indefference made them superior to the compassionate weak. When the centurion looked into the eyes of Jesus, he saw something he could not comprehend. He saw compassion; he saw empathy and love, but he also saw strength. A strength that was greater than the empire he served.

Wyler turned to his assistant director and said "This is not the man I chose". The assistant said "Yes, I know but he was asking for too much money. and this was your second choice and you had said he was good." Wyler said "Go and get the man I had chosen for this role." The assistant pointed out that they were quite a distance from Rome on location near Anzio beach and that it would take many hours to find him and transport him to the location. Wyler replied, "We can wait." A great example of why Wyler was one of the greatest directors of his or any time. The man was pure class. A great story.

I think this is the best scene ever about Jesus. Ben Hur has nothing left and all he can do is cry out for help as he did "God help me" and God did. Without a word, we see the love, the compassion, the caring, the providing, and the protecting. I love the symbolism of the water. Notice how Ben Hur drank way more than that ladle could hold. As God so often does, He not only generously gives us what we need but often so much more. This scene touches me every time and it is a constant reminder that all we ever have to do with a sincere heart is cry out "God help me" and He will...Amen! Praise be unto the Father and His son the Lord Jesus Christ!

It's a brilliant movie, but it doesn't offer a quick and easy way for Ben Hur to follow Christ's reaching. Time and again in the movie Ben Hur chooses the path of revenge and destruction, he is torn up with hatred and misses a chance to hear Jesus preach. It's only really in the final 20 minutes of the movie that he becomes really drawn towards Jesus.

The fact that the Lord’s Face isn’t shown to me is one of the most precious and powerful aspects of this scene. The look on Judah’s face is enough to say thank you.....even though in awe he can’t speak. The centurion was in charge until the moment he looked into the eyes of the Real Master and he backs down like a whipped pup. 💪💪🙏🙏✝️

When I was 9, my grandmother took me to see Ben Hur in Salt Lake City on the way back home from a vacation in Idaho. It was there I met Jesus, whose face was never seen in the movie. One of the most intimate, mysterious, tender things Jesus has done for me was to remind me, "I remember you in the theater, Jolayne, how your heart soared in that scene and you recognized me, how you wanted to know me." Several times, in seasons of joy as well as in the darkest valley, He's reminded me. So, while scrolling through TH-cam the other day, fighting despair from a severe bipolar depression, I saw the headline, "When Ben Hur met Jesus," and I stopped short. How many times have I used those very words, that "I met Jesus in Ben Hur" when asked how I came to Christ. How I wasn't born again nor had I read the Bible until 1994, but I met Jesus in that theater in 1959 and something happened to me. I know every note of music, every detail of that scene, and God sent that very clip to me a few days ago. And today again, when I needed it. Only that scene, nothing else. That He would do that? No words. ☝️❤️❤️❤️

As I sit here and ponder the life of our Savior, what conversations he had with Heavenly Father, what went through his mind knowing that he would in any time of his ministry would have to endure each one of our sins, imperfections, our infirmities, every single one of us in the garden of Gethsemane, then betrayed, whipped, thorns on his head, nails on his hands and feet. And yet he still loved us. This is the part where we must love one another as our Savior loved us, as it is a commandment. It's called Charity for that is what our Savior possessed Charity. We too must develop that attribute if we plan to make it back to Heavenly Father, even prepare for the 2nd coming where we can embrace our Savior, thank him for all he did for us. We must be ready and not spill our oil from our lamp. I cannot wait to see my Savior in all his splendor and glory. I miss him so much and pray I am worthy of him.

Just the same way as we call upon our Lord Jesus in our time of need. And when Jesus hears our prayers, and delivers, it’s like a drink of cool water refreshing us. I have been a Christian for 30 years. This scene makes me cry every time. The King of heaven, who gave up his glory to live amongst us, teach us and ultimately to die for us, shows in this short clip an act of loving compassion to a man at his breaking point. He does that today for everyone at that stage. What I also like is when he stands in front of the Roman centurion. The Roman stops dead in his tracks and can't comprehend who or what is he looking at. Even in human form, Jesus is THE commanding presence. I like to think of Him as being protective of His children in the same way. Imagine if that Roman saw Jesus as He is now, as depicted in Revelation. He would fall down as dead. Praise to the all powerful, all loving Savior, Jesus Christ!

It was actually great direction. The actor didn't really have to act at all. A very powerful scene, but the director had the good taste to leave our own personal image of Christ intact. I mean, no Christian could possibly want to carry an actor's face into the spiritual content of his religious life. The new movie, predictably, does just that. Tasteless, and they even change the story.
