      adi pramana It is really bizarre. I don't think it should've won Best Picture, as Life of Pi and Wolf of Wall Street were superb, but Rush definitely should have been on the nominations above the likes of Argo (okay at best), Lincoln (dull), Zero Dark Thirty (okay I guess, long) and Django fucking Unchained.

    When Niki had the car accident I absolutely hated Hunt but then when Hunt beat the shit into that reporter I couldn't make my mind up who I liked more. I'm also half English and half German so it was hard to decide which one of them I liked more lol. Movie was awesome!

      Actually, it's very easy because Lauda is Austrian, not German, and I think the F1-"hero" of most German fans is Michael Schumacher, not Niki Lauda (btw, get well soon, Schumi!) On the other hand, I just think that Lauda is the maverick misfit, while Hunt is that popular guy who gets the money and the women, which is probably why the audience likes Lauda a bit more in that movie.

    • @concretehippogaming
      @concretehippogaming 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      NewLollyflop I wouldn't say that my Dad liked Hunt more for that very reason. also Germany and Austria are very similar and very great friends they're almost like Germany's brother or sister. So in my mind that little detail doesn't make a difference. All I was saying is that I cannot decide which I like more just like Jeremy Jahns.

    • @NewLollyflop
      @NewLollyflop 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You probably grew up in England, didn't you? Because, as I see it, Germans and Austrians don't like each other very much, there really is some rivalry between this countries :D
      Btw, I'm from Germany, and see your point. Actually, my dad was a big fan of Hunt and Lauda, too, although he is neither English nor Austrian, so probably in Formula 1 it's not really important where the driver you like is from when you just like his personality^^

    • @concretehippogaming
      @concretehippogaming 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NewLollyflop You are right I have been brought up to think that Germans and Austrians are friendly towards one another because it has been so for hundreds of years. They have stood by Germany's side in war and we have come to their aid. I have just recently been to Austria and they are a very kind people very similar to Germans just some of their greetings are different. I was born in Germany lived there for 6 years then I moved to New Zealand with my family. So some of what you say is true.

      disturbedrocks1996 I like that movie, but I understand that there are mixed reviews of it. Although incidentally, yeah, it's pretty different from his usual style, to which I'll actually give him credit since it at least shows that he can have a variety of different visions and sometimes goes beyond what a generic . If I wrote a screenplay set anywhere between the 50's and the 80's, he's who I would want to direct it since he captures those time periods so amazingly well. He's in my top 3 directors, right behind Alfonso Cuaron and Spielberg, so I'll watch pretty much anything he directs in theatres (Cuaron came out of hiding to direct "Gravity" the same year, so 2013 was nice to me). Sadly, 2014 didn't see Howard, Cuaron, or Spielberg direct anything, so I guess I really only had blockbusters to look forward to. Just a thought, but I personally think that Howard does best when Horner directs his scores. I know that he has also worked with Zimmer, and he's a talented artist, but his movies are truly on a role when he's collaborating with Horner. This one had Hans Zimmer, so I guess that even though it was really good and one of my favorites of the year, it didn't top "Apollo 13" and "A Beautiful Mind", which are now classics. I can tell that he really enjoyed making this movie, but also it doesn't seem *quite* ambitious as some of his other projects.

    The story was changed a lot to show a more intense rivalry between both drivers, but they were very close when not racing and really did respect each other. I loved the film and Ron Howard has done done a superb job. The crash scene with Niki Lauda is horrific and in reality there was only a 5% chance he was going to live. I honestly can't believe that guy was back in the car six weeks later when he should still have been in hospital. Most would maybe have called it a day with the job too, so I don't think I've ever respected someone so much then he won a further two world titles. The man was a machine.. I loved Hunt too and he calmed down in later life and became a great commentator on the BBC and was known for speaking his mind. If only F1 had two drivers like these guys again. They are legends!

    It may not be the most epic or best movie of all time, but the story is just top notch. Like Jeremy said you have two very different racers who try to be the top of the racing world, by doing that they hate each other at first. But later they change influence each other's mind and start respecting each other, and in the end they became good friends.
    It gave me chills at the last race when they saluted each other and Lauda gave Hunt a nod, and its a result of good character development, good acting and good music!
    I love movies that teach us lessons and give us real emotions, definitely deserves way more recognition!

    I think this movie was particularly brilliant, for one of the reasons you describe - you're not into Formula 1 (as evidenced by your own admission and by gesturing in a circle when you mention watching an F1 race) but for the duration of the movie and possibly a little after you were pumped about it. You also mention how neither is really the hero or the villian, which is a well done portion of the film, but also a side effect of the fact that just about everything in the movie you know... actually happened.
    Well, I dunno if Hunt actually punched the reporter.

  • @K1ng1995

The acting was spectacular, the story was as compelling as anything I had seen, there were no bad guys (maybe the one reporter) to use as a crutch, and it was incredibly respectful to virtually everyone except the douche at Ford. I love Rush. It ties with my other favorite racing movie, Seabiscuit. Both are very similar because both had a comeback race AND a match race (though for Niki and James, every race they had was a match race LOL). Seabiscuit's match race was famous because it was a David VS Goliath story during the Great Depression. Niki and James's grand prix rivalry was famous because Niki had already won a grand prix and the two of them were equally good drivers and fierce competitors. But the ultimate match race in Rush never happened because Niki retired from the race early due to safety concerns. So that's where the main similarities end.

    Just like you say, there's no main bad guy in the film, and for me, that made it unpredictable and exciting. Not knowing who's the good guy means you don't know who's going to win.
    Also one of the few movies that had from the very beginning. I started watching it for the cars but quickly forgot about them and remained for the story.

    I grew up watching M.Schumacher in benetton and later ferrari in the mid 90's and his rivarlies with Villeneuve and later Hakkinen was pretty good, but this is one of the best in history. It would be cool if they do Senna vs Prost also.

    From what I gather from the trailers, its a movie about two F1 rivals, one gets hurt, the other helps him get back on his feet and they go back racing? So it's basically a better told version of Days of Thunder?

    Fact is Niki Lauda and James Hunt really did grab a beer together several times as they were close friends in reality. As shown in the final moments of the movie where you see the actual faces of the two.

  • @ArtemisScribe
    @ArtemisScribe 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's interesting that you liked the rivalry so much because irl that was purely on the track, off track Lauda was a lot like Hunt, he was just better at separating work and play. That first race where they "meet" that's set at a time when they were living together!
    But tbh, coming from an racing family I was surprised that i didn't mind about the artistic license, everything they did made it a better film, a better story, even the bit with the journalist (also made up btw) made it stronger.

    I can't recommend the Documentary "Senna" enough. It's about the Brazilian F1 racer Ayrton Senna, his playboy career, his intense rivalry with Alain Prost and his death on the race track in 1994. It's amazing and you can watch the whole Doco on youtube.

    I think it depends. There are different kinds of expression of ego in racing. An ego is necessary in racing as a form of confidence that you can compete at the top...this is true of most all sports. Some are more flamboyant like Hunt, but Lauda was actually almost always reserved. He kept his ego in as he focused on the drive and the car setup. He was otherwise quiet, unless provoked.

  • @grooks10
    @grooks10 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I understand that. But doesn't diminish the fact that it was a great movie with thrilling action! But Grand Prix was also special because they put the actual drivers of the time (especially Graham Hill; he was in every other scene!) on the big screen! I don't think anyone had ever heard Bruce McLaren talk before that movie.

    Steve Mcqueen's "Le Mans" is my favorite. Porsche vs Ferrari’s rivalry, fused with the embodiment of the “gentleman driver” concept. Filmed in 1971/72, looks brand new in Blu-Ray.
    "Grand Prix", very dramatic, but great. "Senna" was also fantastic (my favorite driver of all time, up there with Jacky Ickx).

  • @ProphetC2
    @ProphetC2 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    It was absolutely fantastic, is not like Ayrton [whom I think is great and better than Lauda] but this rivalry mixes so many things that make it so awesome, the true story of Lauda's comeback after the accident is cool by itself. I watched this movie with my dad, he wasn't convinced to go but at the end we both enjoyed it a lot. We're buying the Blu-ray as soon as it comes out (we have a great sound setup at home).

  • @stuligan
    @stuligan 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree, as a movie, it was fantastic. But I felt like Lauda's monologue at the end of the movie completely contradicted the rest of the movie.
    This review proves that the movie miss leads how the drivers really were. Yes they had completely opposite personalities, but they were friends off the track. Lauda says that himself at the end of the movie. The image that was portrayed was that these two hated each other when in reality that wasn't true at all. It was only on track these two fought.

    Then apparently he was doing a British accent for Thor too.
    Just to clarify, I don't think the movie is bad, actually the review made me think it's worth a look. My only thing is that he sounds just like Thor to me(At least in the commercials).
    He may have been fantastic in the role, it's just that his face is permanently linked to "Thor" in my brain, and "Thor Drives Race Cars" sounded hilarious to me.

    I have seen Rush twice now. Back to back nights. I thought the movie was absolutely amazing. Ron Howard did an amazing job capturing the sport. Grand Prix is the only other good Formula One movie and it takes place a bit earlier in the sports history. Le Mans is a great film that really goes into the golden age of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Truth in 24 1&2 are both great documentaries about the modern age of Le Mans. Rush has secured the number 2 spot on my racing movies list behind Grand Prix.

    Saw this a couple of weeks ago, despite not being a fan of motor racing either. It's the best film I've seen this year and it'll probably stay that way, unless Gravity wows me. Both central performances are great, but Daniel Bruhl steals it as Niki Lauda. If you've ever watched the documentries on these two racers you'll would know how spot on his performance is. He should get some recognition for this.
