    The underwater fight scene is a good example of why ZAZ movies were amazing. After deciding what the gag was going to be, they implement it 100% seriously with proper filmmaking effort. That underwear fight used excellent practical effects. They had weighted shoes and really were in a tank underwater, holding their breath during the takes.

      6:34 In a movie with a plot, the fate of the resistance-leader would have been more clear. Do the cowboys put him in jail? What for, brawling? Do they summon witnesses to his greater crimes? Does he drown? You'ld think so but Hillary already thought he'd drowned when he never came back to the island. He has a history of getting rescued by political factions.

    • @joshshrum2764
      @joshshrum2764 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah it’s a ridiculous fight scene, but the way he just easily drowns Nigel, is intentionally anticlimactic like it’s not meant to be a big fight it’s just two guys fighting, but the ending of it is bizarre the strange goodbye line even though she could have probably said it normally since she’s a mermaid.

It's just so ridiculous, it's so dumb, it keeps building on with extra features like the bartender and the card-players, and it clearly took _way too much talent and effort_ to film, that it pretty much automatically becomes funny.

And while Abrahams and the Zuckers are largely responsible for the golden age of this style of comedy, please don't forget their collaborator and writing genius, Pat Proft. You guys say theyre aren't any straight comedies any more, but they exist they just aren't funny and they all star Malissa Mccarthy. That said, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and the Worlds End I think classify as spoof movies and they are great.

    • @choronos
      @choronos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Hot Fuzz has elements of parody, but isn't a straight up comedy in the way Airplane or Top Secret are. Shaun of the Dead is a straight up zombie genre film sprinkled with humor. World's End is kinda a genre mashup of action, comedy, and sci-fi, so it's not very spoofy either. I struggle to think of any recent pure comedy spoof movies.
      After the grossout comedies of the mid-late 90s, comedy took a dramatic turn in the early 2000s with Anchorman. Comedy has never left the Anchorman doldrums since. Every comedy now ever has to have the same improvised, ridiculous and irreverent dialogue that made Anchorman so popular. This annoying trend is the main reason Ghostbusters 2016 sucked ass...no script with constructed jokes, just improvisational and referential humor.

      No Monty Python's humor is much more surrealist satire and philosophy. Mel Brooks definitely made spoofs but they were more screwball style. What Colin and Jay were saying in this review is that the spoof films in the 90s specifically tried to capitalize on the popularity of ZAZ films which had a as-many-gags-as-possible style.

    Oh man, "Top Secret" was and still is one of my favorite spoof films. Had a great story, hilarious dialog and scenes and the soundtrack was great with Val's various Elvis-like tunes. He's an excellent singer. Love all of the Zucker Bros. movies. They were properly done spoof comedies compared to the random garbage of later imitators like those mentioned. Ughhh, terrible films. OMG, I didn't even think about Michael Gough being in the film with Val, both before their Batman stints together. Totally agree that the Zucker comedies are works of art. Loved that little Monty Python reference with the "Naked Gun" scene where the waiter is missing the backside of his pants. That's literally taken directly from "MP at the Hollywood Bowl" live show where they group sing "Sit On My Face" in waiter outfits and walk off the stage with their bare butts showing. "Top Secret!" was the fourth to last film Peter Cushing did before his death. His last was and still is one of my favorite adventure comedies, Biggles: Adventures in Time, from 1986.

    Me and my Dad nearly got thrown out of the cinema watching this. Can't remember the last time I watched a comedy and was crying with laughter so hard that I miss the next gag. A typical scene when we watched any of them. What happened to their popularity, IMO, was that the style became predictable to an extent. The unexpectedness of the comedy became ...well...expected. That said, if you stay away from the ZAZ classics long enough, you can come back to them again and again, and relive the pure pleasure of laughing out loud at silly shit..

    On your commenting why this movie is not as well remembered as the other ZAZ productions...One of my theories about the cold-ish initial reception of "Top Secret" was that both "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" were skewering overused movie and TV tropes that were, at the time, ripe for parody. "Airplane!" came at the end of the the disaster movie glut of the seventies, and "Police bɒυpƧ" and with it "The Naked Gun" came during the glut of serious, straight-forward TV cop shows. You could have watched one of the "Airport" disaster movies and then went immediately to see "Airplane!" I'd guess that Top Secret would have been more warmly received if Elvis and war movies had been more recent in the public's minds. This is not a knock on the movie itself; I just often wondered myself why no one seemed to remember this awesome comedy.

    Michael Gough - Goff, not Go, my dear speech-afflicted chaps. But apart from that, absolutely spot on. When I first saw Top Secret (I was 12 in 1984) I was asked to leave the cinema for "laughing too much" - I had a fierce chat with the manager about the unfairness of that, and he gave me free tickets to see it again. Just showed it to my similarly aged son and he needed me to pause it regularly so his laughs didn't interrupt the next jokes.

    It isn't just gags. It also showcases Val Kilmer's outstanding talent. He makes pop singing look like just one facet of an actor's range. I'd like to see him get an Oscar retrospectively for this. It wasn't just writing and production.
    The reason comedies aren't made much anymore is that the risk of offending some loud-mouthed group is so great that producers must hire special people who are easily offended to screen out the naughty bits.
