The only time I replaced a strut ,I compressed the spring while still mounted on the car. That gave me enough clearance to remove it without messing with other parts like the steering knuckle in your case. Great channel. Love the concise format and the sibling humor.
Great video. You showed how to do it all . I turned my steering wheel to the left . Then I had enough room to get strut out. Everything is different when doing each car. Thx man
Another great video (I enjoy them on Toyota Nation forum as well). I have found that you want to break that 17mm strut nut (center of the mount on top) before removing as it makes it easier to deal with. Trying to break it on the ground is awful - especially if you do not have an impact wrench. Been there, done that. Breaking that nut lose makes your life 137x (that is a calculated value BTW) easier.
Love this video, thank you. Never knew how to do this and looks like it’s very doable for myself. My biggest fear was compressing the spring and all but that spring compressor tool you have makes it looks easy!
Two tips: 1)Don't bend the ABS bracket, just un bolt it, you have to swap it anyway. You can tuck it just above the sway arm, safely out the way. 2) When you do the upper ball join mount/nut (thin stamped bracket holds to the aluminium arm), DO NOT hit the aluminium arm as you said not to. You don't have to! All you need to do is tap the bottom of the bolt, avoiding shattering/damaging aluminium (give it some lube/penetrating oil etc). You are steel on steel this way. Then it'll simply pop out as long as you have jacked up the LCA as you say to in the video :) This way no bashing aluminium, no bending metal tabs AND you save time :) P.s. 3rd tip, you don't need a strap, just re-bolt the top support arm :) p.p.s you should list torque specs, i'll add them in a reply tomorrow. Cheers and thanks for the great video.
Just a word of caution, when removing/installing the OEM bolt and nut that attach the strut to the lower control arm, one should apply the torque to the head of the bolt, not to the nut. This is a special nut with ridges that is supposed to be stationary. Otherwise, you risk damaging the lower control arm as well flatten the ridges of the nut. In this video, aftermarket bolt and nut are being used, so it wouldn't make a difference in this case.
Most satisfying part of the video witch i can watch over and over was the brothers toothbrush. I forgot about all the steps on how to do the work. I just know in my case this job is not possible with out my brothers toothbrush.
Dude I'm planning on doing this! Will you do a detailed on on the front lower control arm #1 bushing replacement? The one that pivots up and down? I have an IS300
Probably the easiest to take apart and put back unlike most other cars. Mine is a 1998 Toyota Mark II front wheel drive similar to this. I like the simplicity and it is kind of more safe for amateurs like me. Avoids errors like misalignment.
Now i know you didn't replace your mount but i am going to replace mine.My question is about the bump stop that came with my KYB mount kit.Where exactly does it go?I couldn't tell where yours was when you removed the strut from the spring. My guess is that it goes directly below the mount. Thanks for this DIY.I have watched it many times and i am pretty confident i can do this now.
Do you recommend a quick strut and spring assembly from autozone or is it better to do it the way you did, buy the part and compress it into the old spring?
I believe, you should tighten bolt that holds lower part of strut (where bushing is) when car is level on the ground. The way it is now, bushing is twisted and will wear out faster.
How much of a difference did you notice in ride quality? I’ve got an 07 gs350 165k miles on OEM struts pretty bumpy over crappy roads and still compliant on the freeway. Trying to decide if it’s really going to improve it much. Thanks!

I replaced struts on my awd and it seems a bit higher. Maybe I should have reused the old mounts? All KYB stuff. They also have an anti rollever spring. You have to pull the new strut out a bit if it don't go thru. The awd needed much more compression to replace.
Speedkar99, could you create a video on how to install side mirror heater pads? they cost like $10 each on Ebay. The wiring is a little tricky. I think it would a great project for people who live in the cold areas.
Hai. What a good helpful video. But a tiny confusion. I look at other videos, they compare the new and old strut. The new one rebound slower. Which one is worn out actually? The slow rebound or fast rebound. Really appreciate. 🙏

Is there any other parts you'd look for in the rear suspension to restore the original comfort/ride of vehicle. I replaced rear struts which helped, but doesn't feel anything like it did at 28k miles or even 50k or 70k etc. It's at 112k now and 2002.
great tutorial. +1 for using your Brothers' toothbrush to get that grime out of the lower control arm! wonder why you didn't put new shock boots in there, or change the strut mount plate at the same time. but great video!
Another good job with a few exceptions, brother lost his handkerchief, more important without an unbroken boot on the top strut mount dirt and water and all kinds of road garbage will be on the chromed shaft of the strut and movement up and down will force it into the top seal causing leaking and rust, bad move, Also just tightening instead of torquing nuts is a no/no, this guy is pretty good but also talks too fast!
This man is a genius. This whole time I've been using my own toothbrushes. Great idea to use your brother's!

Dude I'm planning on doing this! Will you do a detailed on on the front lower control arm #1 bushing replacement? The one that pivots up and down? I have an IS300
Lower control arms are one piece on the GS/IS.
So far mine have held up but when it goes I'll make a video
Probably the easiest to take apart and put back unlike most other cars. Mine is a 1998 Toyota Mark II front wheel drive similar to this. I like the simplicity and it is kind of more safe for amateurs like me. Avoids errors like misalignment.
Good choice. Fwd has a slightly different strut setup due to clearance for the front CV axles
It goes on the strut rod
Did you need to reset the bushings?
You have to torque them at ride height
Do you know if you can upgrade a base GS350 shocks with the f-sport dynamic shocks that use the actuator?
I'm sure you'd need a computer and some wiring to interface with the body control module.
Do you recommend a quick strut and spring assembly from autozone or is it better to do it the way you did, buy the part and compress it into the old spring?
Thank you for a great and simple video! It helped me a lot.
Glad it helped!
How did you take off the sensor without unbolting the entire unit? Mine has a metal brace around it and no matter how hard I pull it doesn't budge
where did you get the part
I believe, you should tighten bolt that holds lower part of strut (where bushing is) when car is level on the ground.
The way it is now, bushing is twisted and will wear out faster.
Yes
Just lock it
Install it
Then final torque
So with the rubber cover (don't know the name, being torn up, isn't that bad? Shouldn't it get replaced?
Why didn't you
Did you need to do an alignment afterwards?
It's always good to check alignment after the suspension has setteled. But these struts don't have any adjustment points.
I have a 07 gs350 lexus gs and I need new suspension. I live in Toronto and was wondering if I could bring my vehicle into your shop for a repair?
hi I have a question... after how much miles do u have to change the springs???
Springs rarely have to be changed unless they are sagging or rusted
speedkar99 thanx my friend!!! greetings from Perú
Kyb sells the boot for about $8 separate from the mount. It's cheaper quality but seems fine. Mine are fine 3 years after I put them in.
How does this kyb shock ride? Is it like oem or is it worse? Wondering if should look into oem or get these
It initially stiffer than worn out OEM but since evened out nicely. For a GS350 it was the right choice.
How much of a difference did you notice in ride quality? I’ve got an 07 gs350 165k miles on OEM struts pretty bumpy over crappy roads and still compliant on the freeway. Trying to decide if it’s really going to improve it much. Thanks!
Mine used to float and bounce alot on highway. It's nice and firm and confident with the new struts. Well worth it for me.
@@speedkar99 how many miles did you have on your original struts? Did it take away the harsh ride over bad city streets?
Anything?

Yes but that means a new mount....
@@speedkar99

@@speedkar99 Mount and boot are sold separately.
Kevin Notary KYB only sells the mount with the boot. What brand are you referring to?
How will I know how much to tighten the top strut nut while springs are still compressed?
It bottoms out if you have springs compressed enough (sudden lock) as it his the top part of the thread.
