Dumbest movie I ever saw. I kept on waiting for it to make sense, but it just kept on getting dumber. No logic, just the pretense of cleverness. The thing about the thoughts of the other characters around Jake still being audible and sometimes mixed up and confused makes sense since I often think about what others are thinking. Absolutely FACT. It took me to the second viewing to appreciate it in this way. Admittedly it took months for me to watch it a second time because the first time I felt so uncomfortable and unearthed by it, but now watching it again I was able to sit back and appreciate the cinematic devices used that made me feel so uncomfortable the first time. Dude. You hit the nail RIGHT on the head. Creepy/dark/scary are often used as fluff but true artists use them as vehicles to tell very relatable and tangible stories. Makes the feelings of fear and anxiety much more potent.
I read about how Charlie was so frustrated after the cool reception to Anomalisa he was thinking about never doing another film. And his own brutally honest introduction to the Being John Malkovich screenplay book revealed a writer who wrestled with crushing depression even back in the 90s. Even when he was writing some of the best films of all time. As someone who knows depression myself, I can imagine that the idea of "ending things" might be something he's contemplated more than once. I'm glad you keep going, Charlie. Jesse Plemmons scares me. In everything I've seen him in, he has this unique ability to make you feel uncomfortable. Even in perfectly normal situations and this makes watching him a delight. He seems really nice in person.
Jamie Dailey depending on age it just gets more somber and melancholic. For the ones in their 20-40s I can see it playing out as a horror movie for them especially. For the older ones, they start progressing towards senility and are prolly already done with pondering over the same questions repeatedly. They perhaps know everything’s a trap, there are no answers and one can live or survive anyhow. Ultimately nothing really matters.

I think psychological films like this can be "chilling" and "spine tingling" until you realise that all the film's devices are being used to convey deep psychological narratives, then it becomes a pure work of art, the chills and fear-factor just transform into the shear ecstasy of bearing witness to genius film-making. More of this please Netflix.
I read about how Charlie was so frustrated after the cool reception to Anomalisa he was thinking about never doing another film. And his own brutally honest introduction to the Being John Malkovich screenplay book revealed a writer who wrestled with crushing depression even back in the 90s. after short role of Todd Alquist in Breaking Bad that made him famous Jesse Plemons already worked with P.T.Anderson, Scorcese, Spielberg, Pacino, De Niro, Bale, Phoenix, Hoffman, Carell and many many others and now his in third Charlie Kaufman's movie (as the director). Thats some hell of a career. Not anyone from Breaking Bad did such list of movies afrer it's been over. Glad for him)
You lost me at "maked"
He had a better career than aaron paul himself
He is the new Philip Seymour Hoffman
@@c.d.cabascangosanchez3687 not that much bro
and he married the wonderful Kirsten Dunst!
After an hour and a half of wall staring and thinking... all I came up with was... overthinking is bad. We will all age. You really do not know a person. All of us have traumas. If you were not suicidal before... this movie will get you there.
Spoilers: What I came up with. It's about a lonely old janitor that has a mental illness being trapped in his fantasies, like having a girlfriend he came up with through media and literature he reads. Things don't even go as planned in his fantasies, a lot of his life like his odd parents and farm were part of it of course. And at the end he's snapped out of it as he's in his truck and realizes that his miserable life is the same and he has a panic attack/heart attack and dies.
@@raw_riot_6917 That's a fantastic take. If you read the book you'll know what really happened, but if the book didn't exist I would say your theory is correct.
Brilliant. Charlie Kaufman has blessed us with yet another masterpiece.
Jessie Buckley is talented & has a certain charm about her.
If she's in a movie, it's probably worth checking out.
I've been attached to her since I saw her in Chernobyl
MichaelPN, out of the loop, but just from preview makes me interested in what you say, I’ll look....
I absolutely loved her in Wild Rose. I saw the trailer and thought it was absolute trash. I got to see the movie at a preview screening and was bawling my absolute eyes out
@@hlauterb2011 I'm glad you said that! I saw the trailer first and have been putting off the movie because of it. I'll be sure to try it out, now
Isaac Glover definitely check it out if you can! :)
Only thing good about 2020 is a new Charlie Kaufman film coming
And David Fincher
and Sonic, The Hedgehog, The Movie, The Olive Garden Comercial
Mank by fincher
How can u forget about _Dune_ ?
The film was here all along - we just need to arrive at it.
Tonic Collete will never escape the insanity of Annie from Hereditary and I'm all for it.
Still the worst Oscar snub of all time...
Yeah not a very good movie, but goddamn she was amazing in an exceptionally difficult role.
A great actress and highly underrated
She really doesn't look old enough to be playing the mom to Jesse P here.
@@serrasedai given how time displacement and seeing the characters at various points in their history is part of the premise, I doubt it'll be an issue
As far as pretentious arthouse films go, this one really captures the feel of isolation, depression, being very uncomfortable in a situation you don't wanna be in, and this feeling of dread like there is no escape. It really gets under your skin
This is in no way pretentious, you’re just bitter.
It's unfair to say or imply that it's a pretentious arthouse film.
Charlie Kaufman is a true and underrated genius of today.
Hello buddy
No
@@petrosk.7838 Oh..... :(
No, seriously, that line "I'm thinking of ending things" really stayed at me.... it keeps lingers
The book kept me reading until the last page while working a night shift, needless to say I didn't do any real work on that shift. So unsettling, I can't believe how good the trailer looks!!
This trailer chilled me to the bone. Toni Collette is a MASTER in these films.
I’ve admired Toni’s unique signature as an actress ever since Muriel’s Wedding and The Sixth Sense.
I feel like I need to watch a trashy B-rated movie just to cleanse off my mind from the mindfuckery this film gave me and go back to a normal breathing human being.
@@sehrishshah9071 which movie did you see 😅

Haha same, loved the movie but definitely feel the need to watch something dumb and entertaining to feel relaxed.

I remember reading the book and finding myself dumbfounded when I got to the last page. Trust me this is hella trippy, so excited for this movie.
Upon reading the book, this casting literally couldn't be more perfect
Right !
Also, something tells me that casting two actors/actresses with the same name (Jess(I)e) was on purpose ;)
Just finishing the book, I think I would've preferred the initial casting for the girlfriend which was Brie Larson. But Jesse Plemons
as Jake, really is perfect casting.
actually Jake was described to be tall and lanky in the book, i guess that was to make him seem creepy. but u can't go wrong w casting jesse plemons
Brandon Molina oh brie larson was cast for this? that would’ve been EPIC
Me - there was nothing scary about the movie.
after a month -gets triggerd by existential crisis everytime i see snow, cleaner, hears name Lucy, sees a snow coverd car😂
What a disturbing film, like an never ending trip, feeling on drugs the hole film. But I never take some .
What was this???? I feel early dementia from watching this. After thinking about this all night, and reading another comment, I do think it was a very disturbing look at mental illness.. just my thoughts.
It reminds me of a long, seemingly neverending dream you'd have in a deep sleep
Do you mean that in a positive or negative way?
It was confusing & bizarre!
Take some drugs. More fun than this film
Can’t wait to see this!
The way the sound of the dog’s collar shaking carried on into the dialogue made me feel uncomfortable
There's also the mother's laugh peppered into it as well which really got my fight or flight activated
Uhhhh....what did I just watch? And why am I still thinking about it? The acting is INCREDIBLE. I'm not sure if I have the right words to describe how I feel about the story however. It was refreshing to see something so utterly original. AND it totally took my mind off the sorry state of the world for two hours.
I feel the same way. Dark, beautiful, haunting.
@AlbertaStrength what is a good movie to you? Give me 3 tops for you. Just curious :)
Yeah.....original, it's not like it's based of a book or something hahahaha.....ha
I cried, like a baby. I really feel like the main character and seeying how well those feelings are portraied bursted me to tears. Wonderful movie that really connects to my profund sadness.
