When smart but cash-strapped teen Ellie Chu agrees to write a love letter for a jock, she doesn't expect to become his friend - or fall for his crush.

I searched for this director after seeing the comments. So Alice Wu got her computer science degree from Stanford, worked for Microsoft, and created her first movie during working. That is the most Asian thing I ever saw.
Wow! Great research! That's pretty Asian American. A brilliant and versatile
She also directed a movie called Saving Face, it's a really good movie!
She also directed Saving Face one of the best (also one of my favorite) lesbian film.

I’m all for the lesbians, but I’m so so glad that they decided to highlight the importance of platonic girl and boy relationships. It’s such an overlooked thing in movies.
The girl could be bisexual. Stop erasing bi/pan relationships
@@boogerboy2420 The trailer was pretty super clear about the boy and main girl just being friends. Literally says "not all love stories are romantic".
@@RomanDiaries keyword: "trailer"
Booger Boy I don’t think they were trying to erase bi/pan relationships. I think the trailer was clear with how she is lesbian, not bi or pan, saying love is not always romantic or whatever it said.
@@lilycarp.17 Right? It'd be super misleading if they put that in and still had her relationship with the guy get sexual. The trailer doesn't make the show seem sexualized in the first place, so I'd be shocked if it went down that path. On top of that, the writer/director/producer is a lesbian and the MC seems to be partly based on her.
Also it'd be annoying; the world needs more platonic girl/boy friendships, not every MC has to hook up with the MC of the opposite sex.
It’s not just a teen romance film about crushes and sex appeal. It is a story about learning to connect, accept and love. It’s just love.
That's a really nice thought ❤

I was just thinking "'ugh, another stupid Netflix romantic comedy" and then I watched the trailer. Wow, that looks amazing. Got me a little choked up, surprisingly. What a great premise and emotional trailer. The leads have amazing chemistry, too. Can't wait.
I feel like such a dork but I had tears in my eyes by the end. Glad I'm not alone!
@@TheSuperWeird1 Haha, you're not a dork, it's an emotional trailer!
No its not, because it spoiled it.
@@enemy1191 🙄🙄 how? The fact that she's also in love with the girl her friend is? That's the plot. That's like saying Julia Roberts being a prostitute in Pretty Woman is a spoiler.

Yes! But it was in this part that my heart melted. 1:31 😍

Yeah, it should be To All The Girls I've Loved Before😂😂😂
The best parts (wink) of the film: Ellie's sexy velvety voice, the dad standing there without speaking with the kitchen shower in his hand after having drenched Trig, the song she sings, "I bet she would have tried taco sausage", and when Paul looked shocked at Ellie from the diner window.
Oh god, please don’t let Netflix make this another Sierra Burges, it has too much potential

But explain so he likes her but then realizes that her friend likes her

It seems like Netflix is becoming the Kings and Queens of coming-of-age dramas.
This already feels so much more realistic than most highschool movies that have come out in the recent years. A story that's not completely centered around romantic love but a growing unlikely platonic friendship? The way that she gets bullied because of her last name (something that I, as an asian can also really relate to), the way that he says "I'm so stupid" after she reveals that she's in love with the same girl instead of getting angry , being a 17 year old who's different in a small town and thinking that you don't need anyone else?? Sign me up, I can't wait for this to come out.

a film about squashing the “inevitable” stereotype that guys and girls aren’t able to acquire a platonic friendship without romantic feelings being involved?? ugh, we love to see it 🤗
Not really because it seems like in media boys and girls can only be friends if one of them is gay. We rarely see straight males and females as best friends without any romance.
false, she is lesbian

@@loadedx16 what?
@@yasminemixon5458 it doesnt "squash" anything. She is lesbian so they would be able to "acquire a platonic relationship without romantic feelings being involved". Hence the statement being false

Netflix really needs to stop spoiling their movies in the trailers.

True... Their trailers are too revealing
Like you're not gonna watch it anyways...
I kinda hope narrators in trailers make a comeback. "Meet Ellie:" "a heartwarming tale about love with a message the whole family will enjoy". Corny maybe, but no need to show all of the scenes.

"Interesting"
End of the trailer :
"Release date please"

The best aspect of this movie has to be the characters. They're so damn likeable and well written, that they feel like people you've met in real life.
I agree and I loved that Paul realized he was wrong and redeemed himself. Paul looks a lot like Stiles from the show Teen Wolf, I wonder if the actors are related.

This movie needs a continuation, called "the other half of it", that's how good it is, Elle Chu needs to pick where she left with astra two years time, according to the timeline of the movie.
I think the other half of it should be about guys, probably the guy lead falling in love with a gay guy or something. That would be an interesting sequel.

Guys, the movie is loosely based on the director's life, Alice Wu. She used to work for Microsoft as a Software Engineer and was super intelligent, but then she realised she was gay in a gender studies class. She also wrote screenplays as a side hustle and now this is her 2nd film.
