    Right buddy ! I'm an electronic technician and there's one more thing that's I want suggest the interferences between some couples of nearby electronic devices can affect the wifi and internet speed quality that's why we have to keep away the modems and routers in clear place not close to the appliances like microwaves TVs or refrigerators ! Additional tips for improving WIFI speed:
    1. For cable modems specifically, pull the wire out for 30 seconds - some "provided" cable modems don't actually reboot when you hit the "power" switch they just block data.
    2. For older routers consider replacing the factory firmware with something like OpenWRT.
    3. Don't rely on WIFI bridging instead, run a network cable, between your main router and any additional routers in your setup - note: you should also enable spanning tree protocol on all routers before doing this.
    4. If you have multiple WIFI "routers" check which ports are used you should only use the "WAN" port on your main router (the one connected to the cable modem) all the routers should be connected together via the LAN ports - you will need to ensure only your main router is running DHCP

    Another reboot option is what I do.
    I have it on a power strip. Flip the rocker switch at it likes the modem, router, and network storage drive all at once. Turn it on and the modem usually takes the longest but tyre other devices will go ahead and contact to the network devices. The router will wait patiently for the modem to finally finish and then connect thus bringing everything back online.

    Speaking from an ISP customer service side....
    Using the ISP equipment will hold them accountable. I have dealt with 3rd party equipment a lot. My whole intention is to help. When we don't have remote access or more logged info.... It makes the job a lot harder.
    It definitely depends on your ISP and what kind of equipment you're dealing with though.

    The one thing that wasn't mentioned is when you reset your modem or router regularly it helps to protect you from hackers. When you do this the equipment sets a new IP address so it no good for any hacker that has found your system. Its like moving without leaving a forwarding address.

    • @brianroberts5062
      @brianroberts5062 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most likely because it's not correct. The there are 2 options for the local IP address. (The local address is a Public IP address) Depending on your provider you will either have a fixed IP address or a DHCP address. If it is fixed you will always have the same Public IP address. If it is a DHCP address the address is allocated from a pool provided by your service provider. You are given an IP address on a timed lease. Normally about 1 day. But can be in few minutes when service providers are doing maintenance on their equipment. You will get a lease extension as long as you request that address before the lease expires. When you ask for a new IP address after the device is powered on if your lease is still active you will get your previous IP address. In most cases even if the lease has expired when you request a new DHCP IP address you will get your old one as long as it has not in the intermediate period been given to someone else. This is the majority of cases, but dependant on the Service Providers equipment and FW versions of the DHCP service.

      resting your router/modem does nothing except make more work for you if there things you need to set up (like DNS addresses and such) ... as Brian explained, there are internal IP addresses and external IP addresses .... the rest of the world only cares about your external IP address, in almost every scenario there is nothing you can do to reset this IP address, only your provider can manipulate this address. sometimes you can trick the system into granting you a new address by leaving your modem unplugged overnight or longer but that was back in the day with old security protocols and only on certain types of systems ... as new tech gets put in and companies want to implement new security standards and big brother still wants to keep tabs on you and what your doing, i guarantee that you will not be able to manipulate your own external IP ... if you could then every hacker and terrorist would be using it to hide themselves ...

    I love some of your suggestions. I myself have tried the daily reboot option. However, my first attempt was with a smart lock. I found that when I used this method the smart lock failed because the internet went down when (of course) it switched the router/wifi combo off. When this happened the smart switch didn't come back online to switch the router/wifi back online. So I would suggest only use the mechanical timers in this scenario.

    • @LironSegev

      hmmm interesting as smart plug maintain their wifi info on the device itself and keeps looking for the router. If it didn't then it means you have to re-setup the plug every single time you have a power failure or you need to move it from one plug to another....

    Be very careful using a smart plug to be a timer for your Internet connection! No Internet means no cloud, could mean no smart plug, and so could result that it won't switch on your Internet again.
    Some smart plugs can continue with their schedule when offline, some don't. For example, how does an offline smart plug know when sunset is today?

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      most good plugs store the schedule on the actual device itself and don't rely on an internet connection just to power on and off.
      It saves the network ID too so as soon as the router is back it will reconnect to it.
      If it didn't do these things, every single time you pull it out of the wall socket or have a power failure you would need to reset it all up.
      You don't.

    • @maurice7413
      @maurice7413 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, I had mine on a smart outlet. I have wi fi in a remote location to operate cameras and lights. I'm typically at that location once a week. It would sometimes go offline when I was away. So I set up the smart plug to turn it off at midnight for 10 minutes everyday. First time it went off it wouldn't come back on because it had no wi-fi. It was off until I returned to the location and manually turned the outlet back on. Lesson learned. I had some old mechanical timers, and put one of those on it, problem solved.
      Oh, and to respond to Liron, the wi fi outlet does keep the info, I don't have to reset it every time the power is off, it just won't respond to the schedule without wi fi.

    Spectrum locks their modems, so good luck checking for updates or putting in your own firewall rules. My new modem won't even let me use the WPS button, it's been locked out! I'd like to turn Spectrum off forever, but sadly the only alternative where I live is even worse.

    i haven't upgraded my (personal) router firmware in a couple of years. still works great. I seldom reboot, in fact very rarely. no problems with it. I say if it ain't broke don''t fix it. especially updating the firmware, that is very risky.

    • @trauma50disaster1
      @trauma50disaster1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very risky? Or do you mean there is a very slight chance something could go wrong anywhere on the range from minimal issue to brick the system? So "very risky" is not accurate but more like very small chance there is an issue at all, maybe there is an issue and extremely rare could be bricked system.

    Your re-booting advice often works, just as it does with Windows and other inferior operating systems that do not maintain themselves properly. Memory leaks and crud buildup can bring your system to a crawling halt. It is sad that the commercial equipment we can buy does not have truly robust software and this sort of nonsense is required. It is worth noting that most Unix and Linux systems will run and function perfectly for years without a re-boot.

  • @chrispop99

    It's pronounces 'rooter'; a 'rowter' is a woodworking tool.
    Many ISPs monitor how your service is working, and make changes to optimise service, These changes are stored in the router in volatile memory, so are lost with a reboot. Consequently, unless service is lost, rebooting is actually a poor idea.

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      in South Africa, England we say rooter, in the US its rowter. No matter which way I say it people seem to have this need to correct my pronunciation.🤦‍♂️
      Settings for in router are certainly 100% NOT stored in volatile memory - ever change a wifi name? the first thing it does is ask you to wait while it reboots!!

    • @chrispop99
      @chrispop99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LironSegev In both US English and UK English, it is pronounced as I say - rooter. You can Google and get pronunciations for those countries that confirm this.
      The settings that are volatile are ones that are made by the router as it attempts to get the best performance. This may just be a UK thing, but the biggest ISP here actually tells users to leave there router on to keep optimised settings.
      Of course, user-changed settings are retained.

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry but nope - I lived in South Africa and the UK and there we said ROOTER. In the US, which is where I live now, it is pronounced ROW-TER. (th-cam.com/video/tbGAOroACGc/w-d-xo.html)
      Re: the rebooting - The settings help in ram optimize the router's processes. However, as I said in the video, these can become corrupt, overloaded, run out of temp file space, lock up etc. A reboot every once in a while will allow everything to start fresh.
      I assume you reboot your computer and your phone right?

    • @chrispop99
      @chrispop99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LironSegev I run Linux on my computers, and Android on my phone, so don't reboot often.
      I completely understand that a reboot of a router every couple of months MAY be helpful, but equally as I have explained, it should not be done two or three times a week in the UK. That would give a worse performance.

    We recently got a new router from our ISP last year. the old one doesn't have that option to check for a firmware update neither the new one.. our problem is that we cant get the minimum required upload speed inorder for my sister to start her online job.. our ISP sucks.... cause they dont even now how to fix it.. so i googled and tried all of the suggested settings and the only thing left is updating.. which, in our case is impossible.. all we can do is wait for fibr to be available in our location and if a fibr connection cant fix our problem then... i dont know anymore since we cant afford an upgrade on our current plan which is 5mbps and the minimum required for the job is 3mbps download and 2 upload.. and all we can get in speed test is 5+mbps down and below 1mbps upload. 😩

    Some times it's the cheap & nasty power supply units which cause all sorts of problems. Since buying a more robust PSU I haven't needed to reboot the router for the last year.

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      true about the power supply units. I find that even with the newer routers you don't NEED to reboot as much, but I still do and allow the operating system to do a nice cleanup. Its all down to personal usage. I have a lot going on in my wifi so I find a cleanup works. Thanks for sharing your experience and being here - good to get people's perspective!

    My data transfers from my computer to external drives thru router are usually 50-100 MB/s, but sometimes it slows down to 20-30, then returns to normal fast speeds...why does it do this??? Internet speeds thru cable modem doesn't fluctuate this much and shouldn't affect local transfer speeds so this really bugs me. Is there an explanation or fix???

  • @stephenjenkins1102
