If you get an animation from Mixamo you can't use it in a custom rig unless it's identical in names and bones, but there's still ways around it through retargeting!

The drawbacks is that more complex characters would take a lot of work, but for very lowpoly characters this is useful :D

You can do that! And depending on the rig, that works! Results vary a lot though, I've found this method is a bit more consistent
