I loved this film. I feel like the director was very inspired by the story telling that is done in open world video games. 3rd person over the shoulder with the story being pieced together by overhearing people you come across or visual storytelling.
There is a very cool sense of okay so the legend of Johnny is true in this world, but depending on the character you hear it from there may be some differences in what is believed about the story.
Also loved the change of perspective at the end, as it did a lot to create the tension. Whereas when we are following Johnny as the audience you feel safe. You can watch the horror knowing that you are behind the brute, but when he’s no longer in our sight, I was staring at the woods thinking that he is somewhere in this frame, but I can’t see him and that is unsettling.
This movie is definitely going in my Halloween rotation every year, but I am also the person who loves The Outwaters, Skinamarink, and every Cronenbergs and Lynch film I can get my hands on. So if you aren’t in to art house it may just not be for you and that’s fine. But we need people pushing the boundaries like this to get new experiences and stuff like this is why I love film.

"Whereas when we are following Johnny as the audience you feel safe." This describes it perfectly. My heartrate didn't go up until the last 15 minutes of the film.

I liked the ending after it ended. After she begins running (not really a spoiler?) it was clear the director wanted to build tension, playing off PTSD and played that until the very end - everytime I'm thinking oh this is it ... nope. Wonderful at building tension after setting the rules and expectations.

@@BenjaminKurugaExactly! I loved the ending. I appreciated important detail of the strange(r) lady doing everything in her power to keep the final girl from falling asleep and passing away due to blood loss and trauma. I’ve seen a lot of comments on multiple reviews dismissing her efforts as unnecessary rambling, when it was the perfect combo of a realistic rescue + a bit of paranoia in wondering if she also had ulterior motives. Then the final girl’s inability to relax on the pit stop, even though she was finally safe and MILES away from the killer, was such a devastating moment of helplessness. We know that she will forever feel like she’s being followed.

The entire film is shot from the Killer’s Perspective. The camera begins to follow the woman as she is fleeing the woods. When the girl fleeing the woods is entering the pickup truck, something whispers from the forest and her entire demeanor changes. One could argue she was in shock and slipping out of consciousness. However, my interpretation (partly based on the camera following the perspective of the Killer) is that the traumatized girl becomes the killer. The final scene, the girl has blood appear on her cheek. I believe she killed the woman driving her to the hospital. Why? As the stranger in the truck says, “Some animals kill for no particular reason.”
I could be completely missing the point, but that is my interpretation.
Curious to read your thoughts and criticisms of my take.

I loved the no music, the crunching grass , the insects sounds, etc. I grew up in a very rural country area much like this. For me the nature sounds, long walking, was very immersive! It brought me back those summer country moments, but juxtaposed with this horror. Also loved how the nature sounds changed at night near the end. I agree for the campfire scene. Still give us the story, but let's see the killer do some behind the scenes prep.

I really did enjoy this movie as well but I do see the points you're making, especially about the whole campfire scene. I would have loved to have seen Johnny go about and doing things while we still heard the conversation the others were having. Overall I still enjoyed this movie and would not mind seeing more with a bigger budget for them juicy kills. My theater let out hella gasp and screams of excitement during the yoga scene, some even hid their faces from what I seen LOL.

I wish his senses were highlighted more from his POV. Like the sharpness of his hearing. There were a couple of times when he would be far away from his victims and his hearing seem to put him right next to them especially with his last brutal kill, Jean Jacket Hero. Maybe that’s why the crunching of the grass was so prominent. And to add on to your point about the “teleportation.” That was a missed opportunity to chop down the “boring” parts. It would have been awesome seeing his knowledge of the woods and what shortcuts he would take to get ahead of his victims.

The idea that when we come across the "campers" in the woods and we hear snippets of very cliche horror movie lines, very good inside joke for viewers who are fans of 80s slashers. The kills were.... creative to say the least. They felt a litte grotuitous at times and a little poitnless but certainly practically impressive. I don't think it's boring at all. If you count all the "down time" in a normal woods slasher movie, it's about the same time. I've personally never really attached myself to any characters in the slasher movies aside from the killer. So, being with the killer the whole time is refreshing for me. From time perspective and amount of kills, it's very much like the early 80s friday movies. 8/10. Hightly recommend.

To be honest I liked this movie a lot. Going into it, I already assumed the movie was going to be exactly what it presented, though it was corny at times. Was it boring? To some, sure. That felt like the entire point for this movie. A lot of people hoped for more tension in this movie but we are watching from the killer’s (Johnny) perspective, what tension *really* exists for him? Or any killer for that matter? What else could he be doing? I considered so many aspects from movies this one takes reference from because they’d be doing the exact same thing. The final girl and other supporting characters were typical and added little depth much like many other characters in Friday the 13th , the kills were sick (people even laughed in my theatre), but it was a fun watch. I like how they didn't focus on whether he would do anything (cutting phone lines, popping tires, etc.) and stuck with him just catching up to them and simply *searching for a necklace.* Also, I love that it ended with the unknown for him because we think he's going to reappear but..he doesn’t. The story definitely needed work but with the budget they had, I thought it was a great experimental film and felt like it was making fun of the tropes we’re used to.

Saw this movie yesterday. Was pretty impressed by it. It's not too often we get a horror movie that focuses mainly on the perspective of the killer. Most horror films center themselves on a final girl or a couple of individuals but this film took a different approach that I think a lot of slasher fans really appreciate. Also the use of sound, the camera positioning/movements and the lack of a score give an ominous realness that gave me shivers. Sure, at the end of the day, it's mainly just kids getting killed in the woods but it's a fresh take on kids getting killed in the woods.

It happens over and over throughout the movie. There's always 2 pairs and One is killed in non brutal way and the other os killed in really really gory way.

I haven't seen the movie myself YET and I will soon but I AM kinda surprised that I'm not seeing more people call it a total rip-off of Friday the 13th. Yes i KNOW it is shot in a third person angle following the killers point of view and that's a first in slasher movies and YES I also know its suppose to be a throwback to old slashers and its SUPPOSED to be inspired by those old 80s movie's INCLUDING Friday the 13th and the directior has said so himself BUT come on, does ANYONE think it might be a little TOO CLOSE to the Friday the 13th movies ???? Its SOOOO SIMILAR! The names are similar Johnny/Jason. Looks practically Exactly like jason, put a hocky mask on Johnny and he would BE Jason, even down to how he's dressed! He walks like Jason. He doesn't talk/is mute like Jason. He's in the woods stalking people like Jason. Has no emotions like Jason. The back of his head looks very similar to Jason's. Hell, even Johnny's background story has to do with his mother similar to Jason's. To ME its one thing to be inspired by old 80s slashers and to pay homage to them but its an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THING to almost DIRECTLY COPY the WHOLE THING and ONLY change your camera angle while filming it, put a different mask in the killer, and slightly change the back story. Come on people, i cant be the ONLY ONE thinking this same thing. Look, I miss good old Jason too and it feels like FOREVER since we've seen one of most people's all time favorite slashers on the big screen sporting his good old hockey mask and hacking people up but are we all just so starved for another Jason movie that we're willing to except what really looks like to ME anyway a total rip-off of Friday the 13th ??? Could we all just be so hung up on the whole camera angle thing that it's blinding everyone to the fact that it's just a Friday the 13th movie with a different title and a different mask on the killer ??? It just seems a little disrespectful to Mr. Voorhees if you ask me. Who knows, maybe after I watch it I'll feel different but the similarities ARE UNCANNY and NO ONE can really argue/deny that!

While I really enjoyed almost the entire film, the ending really kicked the legs out from under it. It pretty much ruined the whole experience. In the film's final few minutes, you could just feel the movie slipping away. I couldn't escape the feeling that the filmmakers simply didn't know how to end it... so they didn't. The movie just petered out and then the credits rolled. It was sad. They came sooooo close.

I generally agree with your review. That said, if you are a hardcore horror fan it is a MUST SEE. It may not be the most entertaining movie, but it's so different from anything else--it should be supported. I'm old, so I remember Blair Witch coming out. This is this generations Blair Witch. Like it or hate it, it cant be overlooked.

I enjoyed 'In a Violent Nature,' but the pace needed to be tightened up a bit. The movie is 95min long; could have easily trimmed 15-20min off the runtime (5 from final scene and at least 10 out of all the walking scenes). Other than that, it has a lot going for it; the kills, the effects, the killer, the lore and the camera work are all very good. I really hope it gets a sequel.

I understand it’s a Friday the 13th copy and paste, but it is more gory, and REALLY looks good. So I think it is a really good movie.

I didn’t dislike it as much as some of the people in my theater. I loved the kills but the slow follow crunchie crunches were loooooong. I did like the last few minutes before the confirmation with the gas tank anxiously wondering if and when Johnny will make a final appearance

Idk how I feel bout this film, it's definitely slow and different to any slasher I've seen before. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the pacing but after the yoga kill those long scenery rly felt nice.

I'm mixed on the movie. It's brutal and methodical with its technical execution and some of its shots are actually beautiful (like the shot of Johnny walking through an overgrown field at "golden hour"), but some scenes go on way too long (there's a one-sided conversation inside a car that goes on FOREVER) and the ending just kinda lands with a thud, leaving you wanting something more substantial.
There's a jump cut where a character is running from Johnny, and then it cuts to hours later and the character has inexplicably sustained a really gnarly injury. How did that happen? We never find out. The camera doesn't leave them, but it still chooses to jump cut over it anyway. And that follows an extremely long earlier scene where we are shown a victim getting slowly and gratuitously dismembered for several minutes. The decisions regarding what to show and not show feels confusing at times.
I also feel like the inclusion of a subtle musical score would've helped give the movie a sense of foreboding and dread, and it would've made the movie feel a little less tedious. I'm not talking about screeching slasher movie violins, but a low ambient score that fades in and out at the right moments would've done wonders to the tone of the movie.

    The walking pissed me off.
The scene of the lake kill and the yoga kill seemed miles apart due to the editing of John's walking.
I understand it's a park and not everything is near by, but everything seemed miles away.
I started dozing off and got finally woken up with the yoga kill. Amazing! Chefs kiss
I liked the movie. The kills are great. 7.5 😊

The only reason I wanted my money back for this one was because I found the most entertaining part to be the sound design (apart from the monotonous footsteps), but there was a group of six people talking straight through my showing. I almost walked out. Great movie though!

Loved this movie, i get why others dont. Those without a tiktok attention span who love horror will love this film. Yes its similar to Jason, but its not even the same honestly. If you have zero patience, cant stand low budget, and always compare things to other things, then this film isnt for you. If you go in open minded and expect a good slow burn with creative deaths, this is for you. The acting isnt great, but what the film lacks in acting, it makes up for in creative deaths. Side note, if you love Mortal Kombat fatalities, you will appreciate this film as well. Gonna get alot of heat for my opinion, but as someone whos watched horror all the way back to silent films to now, i feel i have a unbiased opinion.

I've never been at a film in which half the cinema walked out after the first kill, at times it's like watching a nature documentary, too much walking scenes for my liking. Are these people deaf too, like how can you not hear Jonny. And the ending, like what the hell is this film :)

Okay like part of the movie. I feel like they should’ve made it literally no more than 30 minutes long..it should’ve just been a short movie released on TH-cam or something like the hour I excluded is just walking, sitting in a car, and terrible acting.

    🚨 SPOILER ALERT 🚨
There’s a lot to dissect and it really is a brilliant movie. For one, the movie seems to not only pay homage to Friday the 13th, but is literally the proverbial curtain being lifted for the viewer to see what’s going on behind the scenes; I think everything here is so connected to Friday the 13th that in order to appreciate this stand alone film you need to watch and appreciate the formers.
You quite literally see how he operates: how he walks, how he sneaks up behind people, how everyone around him thinks he’s this brain dead zombie, but is very cunning. And I believe he also has some sort of super sonic hearing, and I’m shocked not a lot of people picked up on how deliberate this seems to be placed in the final killing (they are whispering their plan, we are seeing things through his perspective, and then he immediately is 1 step ahead) what made it concrete for me is when he could hear them talking across the lake: at first I thought “that’s a strange way to do dialogue, kinda a lazy way to get around acting by not doing close up shots, they did it earlier with the campfire scene, why aren’t they doing it for the dialogue now?” Then after the movie it hit me: we are hearing what he hears when the camera is behind him; how would he have known to go from the lake to the cliff to murder that girl? Then there is the end. Was it all in her head? There’s a lot more but I’m too lazy to write more 😅 but all together I gave it a 4.5/10 after credits and from the walk to the car and drive home I settled at a 6/10. I’d even argue it’s a 7.5 now that I’ve digested it more. That’s another unique quality of the movie, I’ve never felt or had a plot grow so much in my head after the credits rolled. But I do have a soft spot for horror so 😅🤷🏻‍♂️

I did NOT understand the ending at all, that monologue was like 10 minutes long of unnecessary time wasted and also what really pissed me off about this movie was the fact that many of the victims didn’t realize the humongous killer standing right in front of their faces 🙄
