Cummins X15 Blow By Test, Peterbilt 567

  • UPDATE I started noticing this problem in May 2023. The company decision maker at the time refused to listen to my blow by theory so he sent the truck to Cummins multiple times. After they threw $24,000 worth of parts at it with no changes, they finally said cylinder 6 is wiped out in December 2023. So yes, the cylinder cutout test determined that right away. Symptoms were high crankcase pressure codes, pressure going down with cylinder 6 cut out, and oil on the DPF filter face.
2019 Peterbilt 567 with a 300,000 mile Cummins X15. Recently plugging DPF filters regularly, along with high crankcase pressure codes. I'm thinking it has blow by, and a little research led me to using the cylinder cut out test in Cummins Insite for verification. Before the test, this truck had just finished a 2 hour forced regen and the coolant temp was 205. I had a baseline crankcase pressure of 3 inH20 and it remained the same as I disabled cylinders 1 through 5. Cylinder 6 dropped the pressure to 2.1 inH2O, leading me to believe it has damaged rings. As soon as the Cummins dealer gets a look at it, I'll post the update in case anyone else is having this issue.

Interesting. I haven't heard that yet. We have over 100 trucks so Cummins gives us a special representative and random training. At the last training, we specifically went over this issue. The design of the air intake system funnels debris directly into #6. That's why it's so critical to replace filters and be sure the hardware isn't stripped and the surfaces aren't compromised. Our biggest issue is Peterbilt's cheesy airbox for trucks that spend their life on jobsites and landfills. We need a heavy duty system instead of our highway setup.

@@MJBclassics We just bought a 2020 t680 with the x15 because we thought cummins was the way to go. The more I look into it. The more worried I get. Paccar accepted they had issues and extended the warranties. Why cant they accept it and do the same

@@SouthGeorgiahotshot Overall the Cummins has been pretty darn good for us. We have from 2023 down to about 2016 Pete's with the Cummins. Our highest mileage trucks are 350,000. I've worked here over 5 years and we beat these poor trucks. We haul upwards of 164,000 lbs of aggregate in double gravel trailers on every load! Our main major issues are head gaskets and front and rear engine cover gasket leaks. Those are expensive, big repairs but I hear the normal haulers won't have those issues until over half a million miles. Good luck on your venture!

@@SouthGeorgiahotshotbelieve me Paccar engines are the biggest piece of junk out there. Worked for Kenworth of Pa for 25 years this is by far the worst engine that I have ever seen the engine mechanicly isn't bad the main problems flushing egr coolers replacing a bunch of sensors while doing the flush because they broke. What happens to this when it is out of warranty

The dealer said the pressure is getting up there but not critical yet. I'm not sure what that means. That truck had the small port differential pressure sensor on the DPF, which worked for the first 275,000 miles, but they recommended the big port kit. It seems like a bandaid, but most of our trucks do have the big port sensor from the factory, so I changed this one over (15 minute job), and so far its good.
