I always suspected Ippo wasn't broken, it makes perfect sense he lost like that against Guevara, he took a shit ton of punches in a really short period of time, the break from retirement gives him time to heal, and nothing I've seen so far tells me about him being Drunk Punch at all, he just had a lot of accumulated damage stored and wasn't in his best form.
A good example would be Marco Antonio Barrera, at one point he had epileptic attacks from his wars in the ring and even ended up having to do surgery on the brain to get back, but after healing and recovering, he was better than ever and became a beast.
I wouldn't be surprised if Morikawa used him as a reference for Ippo's return arc.
That would be awesome
Realistically his career would've started declining the moment he fucked up his hand. Hand injuries can be chronic and last a life time.

The interesting part is the change in style. Ippo knows exactly that he has superior speed and footwork and makes use of them instead of turning this into a 50/50 slugfest like he previously did.
In his previous mindset he was okay getting hit 4 times as long as he gets a hit in return but now he is much more cautious about taking any form of damage.
For Sendo or Kyosuke Imai, new Ippo is the worst kind of opponent. People like Sendo/Imai tend to get hit alot by faster boxer like Alfredo or Miyata or Itagaki. Normally this isn't an issue since one hit from Sendo/Imai sends them to the hospital but Ippo is a different story.
Ippo's durability and endurance are superior to Sendo under normal circumstances. (Keep in mind Ippo had far more matches in a calendar year than Sendo which is why he got that minor brain damage)
So basically Sendo or Imai will hit alot by punches just as strong as theirs while barely landing any hit in return. And even if they land a hit, Ippo tanks it easily.
Theres a chance ippo could get downed if he gets startled but he would probably get up

What I like about this anime’s community is we all are or becomes boxing enthusiast and when we talk about a fight from the manga there is a bunch of insights to a particular fight like in real. Thanks in part the authors real life knowledge with boxing, but these insights often also explained in the manga aren’t rushed out progress so smoothly as it should. In real life i.e. ippos expanded knowledge after retiring or looking back on previous fights to see what one did wrong
In the end all I’m saying is we got the best community out there 🤌🏿

I don’t know if Sendo is 100% in this spar but Ippo is avoiding his shots way better than he ever has
The last punch sendo sent out was 100% serious and that's why he left the ring satisfied with a smile on his face because ippo hasn't gotten weaker and can still get back in the ring whenever he wants to

Atleast he is better than that South paw guy's coach who challenged sendo and was almost killed. The coach stood there while sendo was trying to execute his disciple.

@@jonny-i8p except that shigeta was a really gifted boxer. The reason why he handled sendo so well because he was southpaw and could focus on defense and offense at the same time.
the only reason why he lost is because he got cocky and disrespected sendo otherwise he had the win. shigeta even destroyed ippo in spar.
kamogawa is the reason that they were able to become world level athlete is because he found takamura in the first place and got him to train instead of fighting civilians and getting in trouble.
and if you read the more recent manga it even says ippo brought it on himself. kamogawa taught him to use his basics. But ippo was so obsessed with dempsey roll that he dug his own grave.

Those few empty swings from ippo made Sendo more nervous than anything Gonzalez did in the whole fight.

he is better at dogding and dashing. He has the knowledge of using his skills because of his research as a second. He used to be nailed in sendo's smash when they spar but he reacted faster in this spar.
plus his build is diff, i mean who would fight sendo with weights on and still hold back. ya'll see how sendo was taken back by ippo's punches.
You could see in that dash in he was about to use a left straight then it became a feint then procceed to left body blow/upward/upper.

Ippo handled that spar easily with the weights on no less. Physically he's an absolute monster rn. But his heart and mental aren't there, that part of the plot is just getting old and silly at this point lol It's obvious he can't walk away from the ring, he's got allot of unfinished business. "What does it meant to be strong" etc.
His being out of the ring gives us more time with the other characters. Ippo will make his way back, probably after the match between Sendo and Gonzales.

Tbh, i feel like this "retirement" is making ippo to be a different boxer. Back then he was always moving and pushing forward. This retirement will make him very analytical while getting physically stronger, which i believe the only way to beat Ricardo. However, im still annoyed how he is not in the ring.

At 1:06 He Cuts like Lomachenko and Pac to the right side to make an angle nullifying an orthodox' power punch as the orthodox opponent need to track the cutting boxer. But before they could even turn and track Pac & Loma they already recieved punishments and combinations. Ippo was wearing weights he could cut in even faster than this sparring match. I think Ippo is going to be a switch hitter to succesfully do that to obtain a better lead foot dominance for an easier cut which is not difficult for ippo because both of his hands are deadly.
I agree. The New Dempsey Roll allows him to switch his pivot foot at will, so it seems like Ippo will naturally become a switch-hitter (since the New Dempsey is more of a style than a single move) and emulate Tyson even more (the D'Amato shift).

@@ハーフ-r1m he learned Parry techniques now a skill he developed while being a trainer. He’s going to be a mid range fighter. Tyson/Dempsey style is not safe for him. He’s going to have a much more modern style hopefully it’s going to be Lomachenko’s Matrix Style.

Perhaps! When he's walking around, he shows no sign of the brain damage he went on hiatus to avoid, and as was said his technical skill has improved. If he felt motivated, he could very quickly reenter the professional boxing world.

Something that I don't see too many people talking about regarding this spar is that Ippo might've temporarily entered that "Monster Territory" that Takamura had been trying to get him to enter...
In the panels from 1:30 to 2:02, his eyes are drawn distinctly different from the norm. They're the same beastly "monster" eyes that Sendo has when he's fighting. Same with Takamura in his fight with Bison. Volg and Elliott also had those same eyes when their match was nearing its conclusion. I'm just not sure why they were given to Ippo at this particular moment in the manga...

Ippo retired and don't intend in coming back (just for now), but trains harder then ever and improved extremly, he uses weights on his wrists and ankles, even in this sparring with Sendo. Sendo fights a person (Rank no. 2), who beat Ippo before he retired and Sendo was so pumped, that he needed som Sparring, you can see what happened. That's is were we're right now, we all wait for Ippo, we waite for the Ippo with full fighting spirit and new boxing skill's. The moment, when Ippo take the weight's out for an serious fight is going to be the moment where a whole Community is going to shit in there pants. That is the situation after his retirement, Sendo can fight Martinez after he beat's Gonsalez.

@@kevingunn1974 i agree , i suspect foul play by Kumi , that ippo finds out that his been lied to by Kumi about him being Punch-Drunk ( out of sheer love and concern for ippos well-being ofc ) that it ignites a ominious being inside of ippo i.e. the monster inside him that Takamura told him to be , if he wants to stand a chance against the other featherweights lurking in the world rankings towards the championship.
