    How tiring it looks to give birth! And I loved how her massive foot was touching the eggs so carefully, like patting them good night! 💖💖💖

    How awesome that you capture this. Animal instinct is amazing, nobody taught them to do that except Mother Nature. Also seeing the tortoises moving fast is rather funny.

    What hard work Gertie! But I hope they all will hatch safely, after all the loving care you put into making the egg chamber just right. WONDERFUL TIME LAPSE!

    Poor Gertie, birth and egg laying is extremely taxing on the body, and she looks exhausted. I have a lot of respect for all females in the world, of all species. You are all amazing 👏

    Can you tell when a tortoise is carrying eggs or do you only find out when they start digging to have them?

    • @TheTortoiseWhisperer
      @TheTortoiseWhisperer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +108

      Yeah normally they will circle around their enclosure non stop and they also will dig these "test nests" where they feel out the ground so prepare for laying her eggs.

    - I love how it doesn't even look like she hardly dug. It's pretty cool to see.

    How long until the babies hatch? Do you check on the hole to make sure it doesn't get too compacted for them to get out? Love your videos!

    • @TheTortoiseWhisperer
      @TheTortoiseWhisperer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +200

      It takes about 4 months for them to hatch out, and when they are ready to hatch out, it will actually rain and the ground gets very soft for them to come up. Also when the mother first lays the nest, she will poop and pee inside the nest to help mold everything together and also the babies will nibble on the moms poop when they hatch out as an extra source of food (the poo is mostly grasses and hays) Also right when they hatch out, they have this yolk connected to them that feeds them for up to a week. But they naturally burrow and live underground in the wild, I also never had a problem with them hatching. I'll definitely be doing the whole process on my tiktok of them hatching out. The experience of them hatching is amazing! 😁🐢

      @@TheTortoiseWhisperer do you know things about a desert tortoise? Because I want to know if it's ok to put a Russian and desert tortoise together, and my mom said I can't get a Russian tortoise because if one gets the other sick we can't afford to take them both to the exotic vet. And I want to know if there is anything else I need besides calcium power, food, water and a bath for my desert tortoise. Any necessities?

  • @kaylew108
    @kaylew108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did she make that extra spot of dug up and disturbed ground near where she actually laid them as a chance to confuse predators that feed on eggs? Like the decoy car in the movies? I seen you commented that they do practice digging in the ground of the area before, but I noticed after laying the eggs she went over to that other spot and messed around with the dirt making it look very similar to the ground where she actually laid them.

    Question I've got a sulcata tortoise at home a female and live out in California. Came walking down our driveway 1 day randomly and was about 14 in wide and roughly 15 pounds or so and healthy. it is a female and i wanted to know when to be ready for her to lay. i cant find too much info i trust and i reapect the way you care for your animals. please let me know. she has a uv light a basking rock and differet temp zones if she needs to regulate heat. she eats grasses and proper food with calcium and electolite soaks. she is very happy and her shell looks proper.
