      Every animal has its own unique personality regardless of the species. Also, most are way more smart than people give them credit for. Most turtles and tortoises are way faster than people think, it's just that they don't try to go fast most of the time. Also, that sounds so sweet raising one from a hatchling.

    I have a question about the eggs. What if the season turns out to be a very dry one? Do you try to mimic the monsoon season by watering the area to soften the soil?

    • @TheTortoiseWhisperer
      @TheTortoiseWhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      Generally I won't have to do that because when the babies hatch out they will actually stay in their small egg chamber for up to a month and some take a little longer than others when incubating so it's best to let them all come up together at once when it does rain. In the past I have done that and personally I believe it messes up the incubation process and makes the ground even more hard once that part dries up. Or else you would have to keep doing it and at that point you are just guessing that they are ready to be hatched. Because some eggs have taken 4 months and some have taken 9 months.

    Looking at how much she dug and how long it took her, I can't imagine the amount of energy it took. Not knowing what tortoise calorie burn looks like, that looked like a lot of work.
    Also, with the sheer number of babies that tortoises have, do they even have a way of recognizing each one individually as their own? I can't help but think they would lose track after a couple clutches.

    • @TheTortoiseWhisperer
      @TheTortoiseWhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      After she gets done laying her eggs, her job there is done and the babies will hatch out a few months later living just like a normal tortoise 😁 The females won't know if it's their baby tortoise or not but they do know it's a baby tortoise and if they come across one they don't try to eat it or harm it in any way.

      @0ddM0nk3y. Why help? She did a fine job on her own, in fact she even created a special “egg chamber” once her front legs hurled enough dirt first, then she turned around and dug a smaller chamber with her hind legs! This was a very educational and wholesome video! I did not know a lot of the stuff about the egg laying process or the fact that Cactus contains calcium. Also, seeing the hard work and checking on the babies was awesome.

    I'm just curious about if you breed tortoise for fun or do you sell your tortoise online or locally because I love tortoises and was wondering if there was any other breeders that weren't Suspicious as f

      I don’t know if they’d be happy in Northern California, but if they might be raised here, l would turn my back yard into a tortoise environment and I would ONLY consider getting mine from @The Tortoise Whisperer! I might be too suspicious of any other “for profit” sellers. It is almost always in the 50’s here, and Arizona is much hotter!

    I love your videos. The eggs sound like ping pong balls. It amazes me how she does all that digging then covers it up like she never was there. Is Gertie the only one that lays eggs? Does Damia??

    This was so amazing to watch, thank you! I thought she was going to dig the hole for later so she was prepared when it came time to lay the eggs, not go through the whole process at once.
    What a long day for her, she must have been exhausted
