    I broke my dominate wrist and was in a cast for quite a while. I watched many videos with folks that were missing arms or no arms to get ideas on how they did things. That really helped, but I had so much anxiety during that time. I was living alone at that time so it was really tough. It definitely takes longer to do things after surgery. Thank goodness for TH-cam.

    I am scheduled to have my right hand thumb (dominant) on 12/16. I have been looking at sooooo many videos and not getting a good feel for what to expect. I must tell you that after watching all your videos on this surgery…..I am ready! You are outstanding in your explanations and presentations and explanations regarding your experience. Thank you TREMENDOUSLY for recording and sharing your surgery journey. I feel SO MUCH better about my journey ahead. The dread and fear are gone and I actually feel excited and it’s all because of you. Thank you thank you for sharing.

    I had mine done in Oct and it has been the most painful surgery ever! I am a hairstylist and am going back to work on the 20th of Jan. I am still having pain all day, every day. I have been going to Physical Therapy. I have no strength at all. Hopefully in time i will be pain free and regain the strength. Going back to cutting hair will be a challenge but i have pain meds on the back burner that i will be taking if needed. Glad you are doing well with yours. I sure don't want to go through this again. My wardrobe has consisted of sweat pants for 3 months cuz i cannot button pants.

    Awesome video. I had the same surgery about 10 years ago on my left hand and I'm having it done on my right hand this coming April. I had to figure out how to do things myself but you have some good ideas that I will certainly incorporate. I was able to put on some of my husband's flannel shirts over some tank tops for extra warmth. I have two Rottweilers so feeding and walking them will be a challenge for me. Lucky for me, my husband can pitch in and help with that too. Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks for sharing this info. I will watch the rest of them later. I need to have this surgery, plus trigger thumb and also surgery for a heberdons node on my index finger, all on my dominant hand. I am putting it off for as long as posiible since I work with my hands. The surgeon said he could do all 3 surgeries in one shot, thankfully. I appreciate all the useful information you are sharing.

    thank you so much for going these videos, I made a bad mistake of watching someone who had a hard time with their surgery and it scared me to death. 3 days before my surgery I found yours and felt much better. I am now 3 days out and doing great, no pain medication very little pain and I also had carpal tunnel done at the same time. I do have bruising and some swelling but other than that I'm doing good.

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good! I'm glad my videos helped. I also found videos before my surgery where the person's anesthesiologist harmed a nerve in the arm. I had a long talk with my anesthesiologist a half hour before the surgery to discuss it. I think besides the surgeon and surgery assistants, she was the key to a successful experience. I had bruising and swelling for days. We could see the bruising by pulling back the bandage a bit. But by the time they take that off, the bruising will be minimal to none.

      I am terrified to have this done. As I left Dr visit today, the nurse said on my way out, “this is a hard surgery”...”it’s very Painful for about 2 weeks”. This all makes me less than excited to get it done. My thumb wasn’t painful on his maneuvering it today and the new pain I had been having wasn’t there when I went today. Of course! Now home, I am feeling the pain near wrist back of hand bass of thumb. There was arthritis in thumb and wrist he said. So I am not sure if thumb surgery will help with wrist pain. I think I need to call him back. 😢

    I just had this surgery done yesterday. It’s 130 am and I can’t find a comfortable spot to sleep in so I broke down and moved ( with my partners help) to the recliner with several pillows supporting my arm. I also had the nerve block so I’m completely numb for now. I also had a joint removed on my pinkie finger so that finger will need to heal as well. I’ve had pain in my thumb for over 10 years and I’ve exhausted all other treatments. I’m praying this gives me the relief I need. Thanks for the tips.

    Thanks for your positive post because some posts are making me rethink this surgery I am due to have in less then 3 weeks. I am somewhat nervous how much I will be able to do on my own. My daughter will stay with me for the first 24 hours after surgery but she works part time so I will be on my own for periods of time. I haven't had my right hand done yet - I completely understand your concern! One woman wrote a comment on one of the videos saying there is a beauty/hair school in her area that has a $7 a month "membership" fee and with it she can have as many shampoo + blow dries as she wants. Next time I'm going to call every beauty school in my area to see if they have something like that.

      Has your surgeon given you information about this surgery, such as the number of years that surgeons have been performing this type of surgery? (It's at least 80 years.) How many years' experience does your surgeon have? Do they have occupational therapists to send you to for hand therapy after the cast is removed?

    I am glad your surgery went well, I had the same surgery 6 years ago, pain was minimal as well after surgery. I followed all the recommended physical surgery and follow up exercised. Had trigger thumb surgery year later. However things just did not feel right, had no gripping ability and my thumb would hyperextended back. Fight it, changed surgeons and moved to another state. Found another hand surgeon. Long story short... Recommendation was to have the implant removed. Seems the bone had not accepted the implant and it moved around. Implant removed, will be a year mark since come November 1. All is so much better! Life is good!

    The first three days was very painful. I took an opioid, Oxycodone 10 mg, every four hours with extra strength Tylenol 1 g every 8 hours and Celebrex twice a day. It is improving daily. I am a week out and have intermittent throbbing pain. I am no longer taking the opioid.
    I have been washing my hair under the kitchen spigot with the sprayer function. My husband and daughter have been assisting me with the shampoo/conditioner application and putting my hair up in the towel turban.
    I bought something similar for covering my arm in the shower. A pump shower gel and a scrubber on a handle and a mitt washcloth have made showering much easier with only one hand. Washing my face has not been an issue. I use a pump facial cleanser and have used a microfiber facial cloth to rinse and remove cleanser. I have not been wearing makeup, so that has made it easier as well.
    I bought some loose fitting lounge capris from Amazon to make dressing easier. I also bought some larger sports bras that are easier to get on.
    I have my first follow-up next week which is two weeks out from my surgery. I will have the splint removed at that time. I will not be able to pull or grasp heavy objects for months.

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just your thumb is numb? Not your fingers or the rest of your hand?
      If the doctor says that's not a problem, I guess it's better than the thumb being in pain.
      When they remove the bandage + stitches before putting on the cast, ask if the doctor can check it out. Usually you don't see the doctor at that visit.

      I suggest to start practicing now! You will have the use of your fingers, but not to hold a heavy dryer. Maybe try wrapping your dominant hand now with an ace bandage (really wrap it a lot!). And then try drying your hair holding the dryer in the other hand and a brush in the wrapped hand. Do the same with the straightener.

      Mine wasn't as painful as yours. I knew it wasn't going to get better and that I also needed to have bunion surgery. I decided to have my non-dominant hand done first. Then each foot. Last, dominant hand. But I also need to have cataract surgery on both eyes and my eyesight bugs me more than the right hand.
      Consider what circumstances in life will make you put off the surgery, especially if it's your dominant hand. If you need both hands done, have the non-dominant hand done first. You will learn SO MUCH from the first surgery & recovery that you can apply to the second.

      I replied to you yesterday and today my reply is gone. Thanks, TH-cam! Anyway, I didn't have much pain. Having bunion surgery on my foot was more painful (the right foot, not the left foot - that one was nearly painless). That said, you can't predict pain in advance. I can say that REST is the best for recuperation and healing, and the best for reducing pain! Before your surgery, the people in your life must COMMIT to supporting you, taking tasks off of your plate, and that includes your work and your home.

    I need to have this surgery on my right (dominant) hand. Been putting if off for too long. How long before you are able to drive?

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I drove 1 or 2 days after surgery. Since you're going to have your right hand done, you'll need to learn to shift gears using your left hand. I suggest practicing that with your left hand in the weeks prior to surgery.

      Thank you so much for your reply. After viewing some of your videos, I am more relaxed about having the surgery. Can you tell me how much % of your hand strength did you get back after surgery? and do you know if there is a waterproof cast available? I work in a warm water pool with dogs who have mobility issues ( k9waves.abmp.com ) and would like to get back to it as soon as I can. Thank you!!!

    What did you do about a bra? I’m having surgery in a week and now wondering how I will get a bra on or off

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought two that didn't need to hook and then never wore them! It's much harder to get a bra overhead than to hook one with your finger tips. You'll still be able to use your fingertips.

    So does a basal bump ever go away without surgery?

  • @55melange

    I am 5th day after surgery. By day 4 I started experiencing sharp intermittent pain like someone just jabbed my thumb base with a needle. It catches me of guard and makes me gasp or wince. Anyone else have this? I am wondering if this is normal to have these sharp nerve pains and if and when it eases up?

    • @gloryb-tv

      I had that with my feet - bunion surgery - with foot #1. The doc's PA called it "zingers". If yours persists, wakes you up at night, etc., contact your doctor's office and discuss it with the doc's nurse. I'd hate to say to take more pain meds. But I did take the prescribed pain meds for foot #1 at night for much longer than I did for foot #2.
      But I didn't have the zingers following my hand surgery.

      @@gloryb-tv Thanks for that information. Zingers are a great description. I stopped taking pain meds after the third day but ended up taking some on day 5 just to get some sleep.

      Are you in a lot of pain now? It's the occupational therapist's job to get you out of pain and to get you back to doing as many normal activities as possible. Keep pressing them to work with you.
