    I commented in one of your other videos. I had the same color cast, but mine went clear to my fingertips. You could just barely see the end of my fingertips. They wouldn't let me use my fingers my 2nd. cast was up to about my knuckles And then the splint was so I could move my fingers better and move my thumb a little. My first cast was clerk covering my thumb except the very end so they could see the coloring anyway. The right hand will be next

      It is a good thing! Healing is a process. Keep your OT (or PT) and your doctor informed if your healing seems to be going too slowly in the coming weeks.

    I just had this surgery on 3/9/21 on my dominant right hand. My pain was worse the first 2 days but today (3rd day) is better. I’m managing using my left hand, but some things are a challenge, like hooking my bra! I sew for a living and praying that eventually I’ll regain full function and strength.

    • @gloryb-tv

      Make sure you get scheduled for either occupational therapy or physical therapy and they will ensure you get back to full function. I think I started mine right after the cast was removed, which was 4 or 5 weeks after surgery.

      Hi Sharon,
      My wife is getting the surgery in January. After nearly one full year, how do you find your healing went? Do you suffer from any after effects (pains, reduced mobility, reduced sensation, etc.)? Any feedback would help her to be more informed before the surgery. She is a bit anxious about it.

    • @CanadianHorrorGeek

      @@jordanberson2945 hi Jordan! I am so, so happy that I got this surgery. The pain pre-surgery was so distracting and kept me from doing all the things I love to do. The recovery, as I recall, was all in all around 2-3 months, but the pain was only an issue for a week or so. My advice is to make sure she goes to all of her physical therapy appointments and sticks with the at home exercises, to regain good mobility and strength. My hand now feels great!! The only thing that was really challenging about the recovery was getting used to being one handed. Mine was my left hand and I’m left handed so that was super challenging! Lol. I’m happy to chat with her in DM if she has any questions or needs any advice. I’ll be thinking good thoughts for her!!

      The anesthesiologist for my hand surgery told me she needs to have this same surgery on her dominant hand. She knows she'll be off work until her hand is fully functional! Good occupational therapy twice a week (once the cast is off) will be crucial to your full (and faster) recovery.

I am going to have my stitches out and cast in two days then get the wires removed in just over a month. my wrist is so itchy and prickly that i will be so glad to get the big bandage and plaster off. Aches a lot if i try to use the fingers too much. Glad to see that there is light at the end of the tunnel 😊

    Thank you for helping me make an informed decision about this elective surgery. I’m right handed and Need the surgery in my right hand. I didn’t know that my hand would be out of commission for so long. And I’m with you that not being able to blow dry my hair and do my makeup or get dressed really puts me off about this. Is it worth all of this for the improvements that you get?

      I think it is. The joint isn't going to get better on its own. I met a woman who let it go so long before having the surgery, her joints were large and bulbous. After you have the surgery please come back to comment and let us know how you are getting along as your right hand heals. When you drive you'll have to use your left hand to shift! So many things for a dominant hand to do!

    I will be having surgery at the Mayo Clinic. My doctor will only use a very small sliver of a tendon in the procedure. The recovery time is quicker. I was able to find my doctor after many months of research. His patients come from across the country. He has published many articles about thumb and wrist surgery. Thank you for you video.

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good. Mayo has been "over the top" regarding covid, such as not treating patients with early treatment protocols, which is a shame. Hopefully they let their orthopedic surgeons do their jobs.

    • @lesleerohrhinton2575
      @lesleerohrhinton2575 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gloryb-tv I don’t think your reply about the Mayo Clinic and Covid was on target for my remark about hand surgery.

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s important to be your own health advocate, and this goes beyond finding the best orthopedic surgeon. It also involves researching the healthcare organization and their policies. My own surgeon’s practice is large and used to be their own organization. They sold out to a larger conglomerate, but they did so with the caveat that they control their own department, patients, drugs, etc. If I have my next ortho surgery there, I will have further discussions with them prior. I’m having eye surgery in a couple weeks and yesterday I had a brief call with the surgeon to verify a couple things. We had a heart-to-heart discussion for a few minutes about their policies as I am taking no chances at this point. They actually told me to not get any of the covid shots within two weeks of the surgeries as they don’t want these foreign substances in my body. Mayo, on the other hand, has been much too beholden to pharma companies. In addition to that, I just opened an email telling me about Mayo getting sued (new lawsuit) because they’re not allowing an inpatient to be treated by his own doctor with the medical methods the patient and his family/advocate want. We all have a “right to try” by law, and Mayo is breaking that law. The law they’re quoting in the suit is § 381.026, “A patient has the right to access any mode of treatment that is, in his or her own judgment and the judgment of his or her health care practitioner, in the best interests of the patient, including complementary or alternative health care treatments.” Mayo doesn’t care about existing laws, thus the lawsuit. Across my channel in the health-related videos, I constantly press about being your own health advocate. Even if I was doing outpatient at Mayo, I’d be clear to my caregiver about my wishes and intent if something went wrong and I had to be inpatient at a hospital which doesn’t care about patient’s rights. Therefore, I disagree with you. My reply about Mayo and covid is right on target. Mayo shouldn’t be making such poor decisions that lead to them getting sued for violating patient’s rights.

    Had my cast put on today (day 13) by the doctor, also purple and much lighter than the splint, my incisions look very similar, my only issue is that my index finger is partially numb and my thumb is numb, he said during the surgery the nerve was laying over the joint and he had to move it, over time the numbness should go away (hopefully), more bruising than I thought, cast comes off in 15 days, your videos really help....thanks much

The risks are very high with this surgery that nerves will be damaged 😳. Feel like I made a catastrophic error by having this procedure. Do your research and don't rush into this. Are you still having problems with this? Do you have Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome? I developed that while still in the cast after my CMC arthroplasty. Just the touch of cloth on my arm caused severe pain. An occupational therapist at a hand therapy clinic was my lifesaver. She had the doc prescribe amitriptyline for the pain, and I went to OT for months and gradually the pain and stiffness went away. Hope you're doing better already though.

      I thought the cast would be so nice, protecting it. Nope. Couldn't wait for the cast to be removed.
      I want to redesign the process for them. I'm picturing an adhesive cushion with a center cut-out that they put on top of the stitched area - the part that gets red and inflamed has the open cut-out. (Kind of like a foot callus cushion - amzn.to/3codSPf). Then put the cotton lining over that. And then the cast. This would put an air space above that spot, instead of it rubbing and touching the stitched area. Hmmm. Before I have my second hand done (while I can still use scissors), I think I'll buy some larger pieces of one-sided adhesive cushion, cut out a few that I think will work in different sizes, and I'll bring all of my creations with me to the cast day appointment. You and I both know if I suggest they make it, they won't. I'll just insist they use one of the pieces I bring. :-)

I went home after sergury with a simple brace with 2 straps on the arm one at the knuckles and one around my thumb. At therapy the my took off and I started therapy moving my wrist back and forth about 10 degrees. And while holding my thumb joint stable I have to move my thumb at the 1stand2nd joint un and down 30 reps of each 3 to 4 times a day those are the times that I do have to take the splint off.. and I only have 1 surgery incision about 1 1/2 inch long its weird that its so different. I am 2 weeks out from cmc arthroplasty with forefinger fusion. I am miserable and in pain all the time. My hand wrist and fingers feel like I'm touching a hot stove constantly. I haven't slept in weeks. Is this normal??!

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not normal nor healthy. Your surgeon and his or her team should be concerned with your pain level. Call them tomorrow and leave a message for a call-back. Usually the doctor's nurse will return your call. Tell the nurse what you've told me here. More pain meds isn't a good answer! You need a plan, even if it means managing the pain meds in a way that plans for you to use less and less meds over a period of days or weeks. After the phone call, the doctor should either get a pain management plan to you or the doc will want you to make an appointment. See the doc in person if you can (not telemed). Either way, you need a pain management plan which results in (1) considerably less pain and (2) eventually being off all pain meds (including over-the-counter -- even Tylenol is hard on the liver).
      When are you scheduled to get the big bandage off and go to the cast?

Also difficult to once you realize that its a teaching hospital and the dr you booked the surgery with probably isn't even the one who did the procedure. Hi, any issue with driving with the splint or the cast?

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't. But my first hand done was my left hand. When I have the right done, I'll have to change gears with my right which might take some practice.

    Do you think it is worth it how many months are you now and do you feel like you can do think not that you could not do before .

      I'm approaching 5 months and each month is getting better. There are still a few pinching motions I can't do on tough metal clips. And I just started doing "girl's" pushups. It might be a while before I can do "boy's" pushups. Maybe at the 6 or 7 month mark.

      I had my left thumb done in September 2017 and in September 2018 I had my right thumb done. It is totally worth the surgery to live pain free. However, it does take at minimum a solid year ++ of recovery. There is never a good time to have the surgery because life happens but I'm so excited to live pain free! -Suzanne

      Yes. The documentation the doctor gave me said if left as it is, the thumb joint would eventually collapse.

    Did you have the feeing the cast was too tight? Seems as though my knuckle is rubbing on the inside

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My cast wasn't too tight on the knuckles. It was completely comfortable there. The cast was only uncomfortable for me at the incision site when the waterproof material stuck to the wound.
      If I were you, I would call my doctor's office to tell them the knuckle is rubbing/hurting. That isn't right. They should remove the cast and start over. Your knuckle isn't swollen so it shouldn't rub or hurt at all.

      Your knuckles shouldn’t have been covered in a thumb spica cast, they did it wrong

    I had my surgery done on March 4th and the stiches were taking out and a cast was put on on the 11th. Did you have soreness at the incision site after the cast was put on?

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had LOTS of soreness at the incision while the cast was on. I think they should first apply a sponge-y piece that has the center cut out, an oval shape, that is placed around the incision area with the incision seen through the cut out. That would be a good cushion. Then put the cast over it. Whenever I get my second hand done I'm going to suggest that to the doctor before the day of the cast.

      @shelbiegrigsby724 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gloryb-tv that would be a great idea. I am counting the days to get my cast off (April 1st). When it swells, it becomes very uncomfortable and I start getting an occasional pain with burning sensation. This really only happens in the evening. It is my right hand which is my dominant hand. So that does make things a bit challenging to do.
      Another question I had was when did you begin any exercise after the surgery. I do dance aerobics and am really hesitant to start that back up.

    • @gloryb-tv
      @gloryb-tv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you get the cast off and the custom splint, ask them about when you might start dance aerobics again based on the arm movements in the exercise. They'll give you an idea of timing.

      I didn't have that experience. I suggest calling your doctor's office and getting his or her nurse to call you back first thing on Monday morning. You need to know from them what they determine is normal pain and what isn't normal.
