Superglue goes through a powerful rapid exothermic reaction when put on porous/fibrous natural materials. Can even start a fire with some superglue and cotton wool! That's what caused the smoke on your bark piece
Miniac : The way I see it, almost all of the individual steps in this process were easy. I wouldn’t call these bases simple, quick or trivial, but neither did you. The difficult part is the aesthetics, really. That’s where I usually struggle. Furthermore, one obviously needs quite a bit of materials. Feel free to call the bases easy, though you might want to elaborate on what you mean (”It looks far more difficult than it actually is”). Watching your video, words like ”inspiring” and ”beautiful” come to mind. Thank you!
they may not turn out as well but certainly its only a limitation of imagination. even if you just add a fews extra bits. I wont a local painting contest best overall stormcast ranger(personally i hated the mini but was to lazy to cut it up as a dead guy which i originally intended)) with a sword in a rock from manic games crate, a skull a fews tufts of grass on crackle paint(first time i used crackle paint).
Maybe for the next base series showcase what you can do on models that are ALREADY glued to the basis. I personally don't buy those kits where you put the minis together, but rather already completed minis on basis, ready for priming
I second this request. As someone who often buys second hand models (and/or may have assembled a bunch of models before even thinking about basing them) something I can easily work in around mini feet would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to work out a good way to do some kind of vehicle wreckage in snow type setting but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Thanks for the quality video.
I'd like to see this and attaching minis to bases like in this video. Bases like these look nice, but I've always wondered how you attach the mini without screwing up the paint job and if it'd be more troublesome to attach the mini and then paint the base and all.
Sometimes I like listening to you at half speed so it's like we are in a bar at 2 am, and we're at that drunk stage between wise scholar, and making bad decisions
I love this format because 1) you do multiple pieces showing a variety of techniques and effects and 2) you're describing how you do these pieces in particular, not how you approach base-making in general. Also love the ad's progress bar. Congrats on the sponsorship, man, you deserve it!
Honestly, the diversity of your bases makes me think you could almost do a video series with 4 different bases every week. Lord knows I'm always looking for ideas for my humble minis lol
I really like the touches of comedy that have been added in recent videos. Awesome stuff, thank you for always striving for more entertaining and educational videos.
Scott, my wife and I have been away from each other due to work. She knows your the reason I really got into miniature painting so she sent me one of your hoodies. It’s been tough without her and the hoodie made my absolute day. Thanks for the constant inspiration and keep on painting more minis.
Great video Scott, I love the details explained and the length of the video. Not too long, not too short. I would be super down to see more basing videos in the future.
All four of these are awesome Scott!!! My personal favorite is the orange debris on the first scifi base - but that airbrush blood effect is a lot of fun too. And yeah, you put a LOT of superglue onto that bark. Biological materials have some of the same types of molecules as the active ingredient in superglue accelerator. That exothermic reaction of superglue polymerization is going to go really fast and raise the temperature of that bark ---> smoke!!! :-)
Man I loved this basing video! Great ideas that looked sweet too! I’ve been stagnating I’m basing for a figure, and this gave me some food for thought and motivation. Thanks dude!
the whole reason I started building a nighthaunt army, was so that I could paint them super fast, leaving me way more time to put some love into the bases :D
These are awesome ides for basing. For folks who want to get to gaming fast but also want a painted/based army, I'd recommend buying sculpted bases--it's worked out great for me when I want to save time or am feeling lazy... which is most of the time.
My current favorite base design is what I'm using for Stormcast. I cover the base in styrene cobblestones, and add green stuff as dirt towards the edges with the occasional small rock or skull pressed or glued into it, then I drape green stuff vines over all the parts of things. Once things have set, I take some baking soda and glue it to the dirt piles. If you want, and have the room, you can make it multilevel with a sheet of cork covering part of it, and have both the top and bottom covered with cobblestones. It's detailed, and if I ever actually build an army, I'll totally cast 5-10 of them and make them in mass.
Absolutely awesome! Thanks for this quality video. Adding the "accessories" is the hardest part when it comes to basing for me, and these have definitely given me a few idea.
Scott, this is your best video hands down, I've got tons of old PC PCB/screws etc in my scenery box, all these recipes are conducive to being done in batches too. 8/10 my man, because nothing is perfect 👏🏻
Something I highly recommend and use almost religiously are the Basius pads. They're large resin squares with the relief of some terrain, you just spritz it with water, glob some greenstuff onto the base, and press onto a random location then pull it off. They look fantastic, have a lot of variation, and are easy to supplement since it's greenstuff (they have a forest pad that I use and run the tires of vehicles over to get a sense of weight and mud).
Hey Scott. Just wanted to say thank you. Thank you so much for taking the time and dedication for making videos like these. Due to family issues at the moment, I’ve tried to find a ways to keep myself active during harsh times. 16 and leaving school for college already is hard enough. Watching your videos make me laugh and smile in a way I don’t get as much anymore, currently guitar and warhammer are taking up 75% of my time. You don’t understand the effect you’ve had on me. Thank you.
Have you tried Mr. Super Clear? That is a good way to hold dry pigments in and if you use the Matt version it doesn't add a shine. I use this in doll repainting.
While I'm not into miniatures per say, Ive been getting into creating dioramas for larger scale models (Munnys, Nendoroids, etc). I love your sense of humor & clear instructions on what you did. I'm definitely going to peruse your videos for some addition inspiration!
6:20 I had this happen years back I was gluing Kharn the betrayer to it's base plate and got super glue every where so wiped it on the foam that came with the model. Smoke everywhere strange smell too.
Yes more bases!!! Next time, can you demonstrate how to put on some minis? Or better yet, can you go through your mini collection, grab a random mini, and show us your process of how you decide what base would look coolest with it?
Nice video. I would like to see you put some minis on those bases for your next video. I think the light pole one would be cool to show lighting effects on the mini. The others might be good to show dirt and battle damage on the mini.
All of those bases looked fantastic, and different. For sure want to see more! Also that tearing on the fence when you went to cut really worked for the base in my opinion. A mech crashing through it would cause cuts and tears. Or I like to think if the tear was at the bottom, someone was cutting it when something crashed into the fence!
Great video. It’s nice to see more varieties of basing ideas. I’m curious how to make movement and “active” weather effects on bases. That idea on making casts for en masse basing sounds great; I wonder roughly how much variety would be needed to make that en masse not look so much like copies as well. Kind of like how one blob or pattern block can get repeated in a camo pattern but it’s harder to pick out the repeats.
Awesome video....you actually gave me some really good Ideas for just simple additions to bases....I would like to see the pinning process...also how do take into consideration the pose of the base (maybe one foot higher than the other and things of that nature)....great video...if you do it again then seeing what you can achieve with bigger bases would be impressive I'm sure
Thanks, mate, I'm in my fifties, been doing game workshop since the '80s, love seeing different idea's, but love to seeing figures on the base with the grass and other stuff/materials, do you spray a gloss or matt varnish over the whole kit, so everything stays put, I'm always learning new ideas, I use everything out of my yard to build bases, and cheap as chips, Cheers Everyone.
I was just thinking about looking up some videos for basing inspiration when I saw you posted this! Serendipitous. Loved this vid and would love to see more like it! Maybe some different genres? Or bases for different races? I paint a lot of fantasy minis and am always looking for ideas for a wizard or a dwarf or a Dragonborn paladin or whatever. Or maybe some different vids on fantasy/sci-fi/post-apoc/modern?
To keep your dry pigments in place while not losing their- well, dry look- I'd look into Mr Super Clear sealant. You definitely need to wear a ventilator mask while using it, though, so be careful!
i know this is an older video, but i had an idea do do an underwater theme for tzeentch daemons, so that would be something I would love to see! Great video
How Scott sees us: Mini painting nerds with a funny voice and our glasses upside-down. "But I dont sound like that!!" (yells and pushes his upsidedown glasses up). Lol awesome work man!! Maybe you can sculpt a base from scratch. I love sculpting bases. Thats something new and easy to start off sculpting :)
Its amazing, I spend a lot of time on youtube watching miniature hobby and gaming videos and i just found your channel. I love your vids. Mainly they are super entertaining. The painting tips are a secondary bonus. My painting skills are most comparable to a 5 year old with a magic marker. You know full fist grip on the brush, tongue sticking out, and holding the mini down with palm my other hand. Fine motor skills are not my thing. Anyway keep up the great work and congratz on the new career
Vallejo Pigment Binder or MIG Pigment Fixer. Vallejo is a bit thinner than traditional matte mediums, but roughly the same thing. MIG, however; is what I use for all my weathering. No problems and it only slightly kills the dryness of the pigment. Best done in two layers to create a nice dry/ wet contrast.
Basing is my favorite part of mini painting this is where I can go all out. My paint can be mediocre but if the base is on point, it almost blend those mistakes. Especially when an entire army is done.
Yacht varnish. For the ship floor. Allows you to do the base dry and loose, then cover it in varnish, drys clear and will hold all the material solid on the base.
Scott do it again it was good to watch, would be cool to see more detailed bases for painting competitions, you know the ones that got way over the top 😉
Vallejo recommends sealing in dry pigments with white spirits dropper-ed on them, then using gloss or matte medium over that, depending on what loom you're going for. The more you know!
Superglue goes through a powerful rapid exothermic reaction when put on porous/fibrous natural materials. Can even start a fire with some superglue and cotton wool! That's what caused the smoke on your bark piece
Science!
Yup!
What exactly is the reaction? why does that happen?
@@MrGdtait It's oxidation over time. If put in open air with enough heat and fuel it catches fire.
@@Uberdemon0666 So with ambient temp and increase surface area from the porous wood it has the activation energy to make the whole thing spontaneous?
Love when Scott goes into reverse glass SCATT mode
Upsidedown glasses guy is great. He tells the truth. Scott should listen to him more.
You have a different definition of easy than I do. Sweet looking bases though.
I guess easy to me is defined by how long these took me. No detail was labored over, so the process was really fast!
Miniac : The way I see it, almost all of the individual steps in this process were easy. I wouldn’t call these bases simple, quick or trivial, but neither did you. Dude your content has serious jumped in quality since you went full time. Very happy for you, keep em coming.

@@masochisticmuffin Did you not watch the whole video? Super glue or pinning.
That was tight as hell son, I'm way into more basing videos. ❤️
YES for the “molding and casting” video! I struggled with it in the past and would love to see how you do it.
Sometimes I like listening to you at half speed so it's like we are in a bar at 2 am, and we're at that drunk stage between wise scholar, and making bad decisions

Awsome, finally a good basing video! One with detailed bases not just dirt and grass.
You made me paint again after 30 years (yes i'm 45), thanx for this, from France. Keep up the good work !
He made me paint again after 20! And he constantly wants more minis as a sacrifice! He's a demon!
Basing is my favorite part of the hobby, more of this is very welcome!
I really like the touches of comedy that have been added in recent videos. Awesome stuff, thank you for always striving for more entertaining and educational videos.
I'd love to see another video like this. I'm struggling with making cave floors and seeing someone else make some would surely help.
Wow that inspired me to put a little more effort in basing. I liked the shadow around the lamp post a lot, really cool effect. Great work Scott!
Scott, my wife and I have been away from each other due to work. She knows your the reason I really got into miniature painting so she sent me one of your hoodies. It’s been tough without her and the hoodie made my absolute day. Thanks for the constant inspiration and keep on painting more minis.
that makes me really happy
Miniac Glad to here my good sir. Thanks for the reply!
Super soft hoodie btw. Quite cosy in there.

I really like basing on my miniatures so I'd love to see another video like this. Keep up the amazing work, Scott.
Very nice scenic bases. Thanks for the walkthrough!
Bases are great fun, always brings a mini to life i reckon. Scratches my diorama itch when I don't have much time! 🤘
Scott, this is your best video hands down, I've got tons of old PC PCB/screws etc in my scenery box, all these recipes are conducive to being done in batches too. 8/10 my man, because nothing is perfect 👏🏻
Excellent work, the swampy woodland base is my favorite, the owl really sells it!
I've just started making more scenic bases for my minis, and this video was exactly what I was looking for. I'd love to see more.
This was extremely helpful for someone just toeing the waters of creating more advanced bases - I'd love to see more content covering this topic!

Love the light effect on the steampunk base!
Just got several types of sculpting medium specifically for bases. Great timing!
These base making videos are my favorites. Very inspiring. Thank you!
For fixing dry pigment have you tried isopropyl alchahol?

Excellent video once again Scott!
Loved it. Can't have too many basing tutorials.
These are awesome! I'm always a fan of great basing. I'd love to see your take on hostile/alien terrain bases. And for pigments, try hairspray.

Perfect timing, I just started basing my Tyranids last night!
Great content!!, This should be a series. I Love when miniature painting and diorama work together. You could make a base thinking on every faction
Awesome basing video, Also it would be cool to see you do a dead person or space marine in the next one.
that was easy step by step instructions to follow, thanks for the vid m8ty.
Super cool to watch!
MAybe next time showing how to integrate single bases with movement trays!
I love your videos. Top tier inspiration.
Would definitely love more of these, and also wouldn’t mind seeing a series leading up to a golden daemon or crystal brush again!
just how can we dislike this vid ? great job ! you had inspired me cuz i always have problem to choose the way i ll basing my minis
You can also make custom objective markers using similar techniques!
Vallejo recommends sealing in dry pigments with white spirits dropper-ed on them, then using gloss or matte medium over that, depending on what loom you're going for.
The more you know!
Still comes out less dusty though. I just bought a few pigments from them and haven't found a good way of application either.
great work, thanks for the ideas.
Again. Please. This is one of the few of your videos I can keep up with, please more
