What I've found to be useful is that I have a small LED flashlight that I will shine from my desired light source direction. I can then take note of this area, or can also take a picture of the mini with the light source. I've found it to be a great way to see precisely where the lights high points are and shadows are.

Great informative video! Airbrushing helps a ton in highlighting, if you have the control (like you do) - because the spray can be used as if it were the "light" - so if you airbrush from the top down, you get a natural highlighting effect! Liked your video!
You have the best quality and that is heart failure is just the first step to success you are a amazing painter and its because of your heart you love what you do and you inspire others thanks

Dang man... I see I'm not the only one concerned with your paint consumption... next video "Spit as a Medium"? Anyway very informative and as always... Hail and Kill!!!
The last paint night I went to the guy next to me kept doing that. Finally I asked "Have you heard the story of the Radium Girls?". He replied "Yes, but this paint isn't radioactive."
Hi Scott, I hope that you're well. I am trying to find acrylic Vallejo primers for airbrushing in red, yellow and blue so that I can create my own colours, as I'm finding that acrylic PRIMERS are very scarce apart from black, white, cream and possibly just one other. Would you know where I can get them from. All I seem to get in search results is Vallejo Polyuerthane which I believe is no good to paint over with acrylic base coats. Alternatively would you know where I can get a larger selection of Vallejo acrylic primers, so that I don't have to bother mixing.
That is absolutely stunning. Subscribed! You’re videos are really informative but hilarious 👍🏻 What colours did you use? I would love TRY and paint a leather cape like that!
I would totally like to see a color theory video as well. Probably won't help me, think i need to try something else. I've been eating crayons but I noticed you lick your brush, I lick windows and will pour paint in drippy runny lines and go to town on my painted window until it's either clean or resemblance of starry night is apparent. Then I will !!!!!!!!!!!PAINT MORE MINIS!!!!!!!!!!!! Love ya man.
It's not good for you to do this. During art training you're introduced to toxicity in art. Paint, even 'safe' paint, is not good for your body. Acrylic is basically plastic, which isn't good to consume. Try to avoid licking those brushes if you can!
Licking a paintbrush and consuming paint is much different. It's not as if he's drinking it, or even swallowing it. Maybe he just wipes his tongue off afterwards. I know you absorb some but not that much.
Awesome vid man. I recently was given an air brush and I've got a copy of Cursed City on the way that I really want to do justice to. The minis look fantastic from pics I've seen and I really want to push myself with these ones.
I love your videos man. There's so much to do and pursue in life I can't watch them all, or paint as many minis as I want, but I always love when I can squeeze them in. :) Keep up the awesome work!
Is there any point in using this technique on black armor? The Crimson fist you showed in the end of the video looked very cool, and i wonder what colour should be used on The Blackest of the Black TM that Black Templars have.
You should look into masking liquid...its good for very precise masking as it has the consistency of paint(but dries as a peelable latex) Should be able to get it at your local hobby store...or online! Also tiamya makes a good model masking tape, works like standard masking tape but is scaled down for precision
I always appreciate that you show off how to accomplish various techniques with brushwork. It's my preference as I get an odd uncanny valley feeling from many-if-not-most airbrushed models.
How do you keep the tip straight and stop it from drying? When I thin it, the lines come out very faint and its hard to control. And then when I use less water, the tip dries =/ Please help!!
Hello Scott, What brush do you use to paint highlights? I used a brush with a very small tip and then "breaks" the tip off. As an example a daVinci 10/0 brush. In this and other videos of yours, the brushes are much larger than the one I used. Your brushes are also wider on the ferrule and then become very sharp. Greetings from Germany Olaf
Hey man this was a really good video, beginner painter here that would love an in-depth video of how you did that fantastic blend of the highlights with feathering/wetblending - you made it look so easy! The hardest part feels like it's finding the right consistency of paint vs water so that it doesn't run or look patchy when you apply it. Regardless, keep up the good content!
Remember, when you paint something, it dries and doesn't look right. Just try it again. The greatest difference between a great painter and a newbie is patience. The great painter knows that a good piece takes time. Keep practicing :-)
Thanks man, I am having trouble with the patience part to be honest and when things get wonky I put down my brush for a few days, which frustrates me even more. I'll keep it in mind!
Hey Scott, you know how you have your "Eavy Metal Marines" series, I was wondering if you'd consider branching out into other models than space marines and trying to paint them Eavy Metal. May I suggest Astra militarum cadian shock troops?
It's pretty much the same thing over and over again with different colors. Personally, it's not a very interesting subject to do, because the style is consistent. I fear that after a while, the material will also become boring to watch because it's predictable.
This wetblending and feathering looks so easy.... but I still cant get a hold of it how much I have to thin down mypaints.... I often end up with a too much deluted paint, so I only spread the whiter bright pigments. It starts to look wrong and I start to get afraid of mess up everything.
Id like more content focused on how you approach your full army builds similar to your Song of Ice and Fire mini force content. That is more practical for people in the hobby imo. The content in nearly all 'tuber' paint tutorials etc focuses on really the techniques for 'hero' models. As a painter of many years (I'm in my 60's I started in 1979) there is a real difference in my techniques between 'rank and file' and 'hero' minis. My rank and file minis get a minimalist approach with colors blocked in and quick pass of highlights then shadows, followed by some picked out detail uniform(ish) to the troop. Hero figs get a much more full treatment and get a blended and layered approach to volumes where the contrast is pushed much more. This became really obvious when doing historical miniatures for the seven years war; while I could have taken a similar approach to the 'hero' style across a Battalion's worth of miniatures its just not practical so trade-offs are required or the army would never get to the table. I feel that context should be set in each of the videos you deliver.
What airbursh and compressor are you using? Love the channel Scott! Just started painting a few months ago and your videos have been a tremendous help. Just subbed on Patreon.
Hi Scot thanks for another brilliant video. I was wondering if you could do a review of Figopedia for us/me I've ordered my copy but the shipping can be from 2-3 weeks to 2-3 months

Very ironic that the execution ghost is tied to the gallows pole. There must be a interesting back story in there somewhere, or at minimum an awesome name for a metal song!
After binge watching all your videos today, I was wondering, how do you do the stipple effect with the tip of the brush? Like on a ride to make it look like cloth. Do you know of any videos showing an example of this? Or could you make one? You rock and explain everything perfect! Keep it up!
This feathering with water thing gave me an idea: What if u apply a few layers of shades to your minature and then "drybrush" with water, basically scraping the shade from the edges. That way u could kind of edge highlight the model without needing to worry about hitting other details since u apply it to the whole mini anyway. Ofcourse your army has to match that dirty look the multiple shades create, but since I play Death Guard its fine. A few tries of this look not too bad although one should not go overboard or else only the primer is left on the edge. Further testing will be done. Has anyone else tried this or is this an existing technique that I am not aware of? Or is this a really stupid idea and thats the reason I did not find any information on this. EDIT: Tried a little more. Results are ok, but 2 problems. 1) As mentioned, often the paint also comes off leaving only the primer. Will try to counteract that by varnishing before shading. 2) Often the shade is really stubborn and does not come off entirely. Will try the stuff u use for stripping models instead of water. Hopefully it will not be too much.
New series idea: buy second-hand, partly-painted or painted miniatures on eBay and try to get them to a high a standard as you can. Without stripping the current paint job, of course.
Another great video, maybe if I watch it another ten times, something might dawn in my head! I like your blending with 'water', hope you are making sure your paints are non toxic! My only hope is if you come to my work someday, you will feel like as big an idiot as I do watching you!
