      I’m inclined to agree with one of the above posters - it’s possible he just took the test over and over until he passed. That’s still possible here in California (reputed to be the toughest bar exam in the nation). You can take the exam as many times as you want until you pass. I’ve known people who took it six or seven times before passing, and they went on to work for good firms and have successful careers. His claim that he passed the Louisiana bar examination, worked for Attorney General Jack P. F. Gremillion, and closed 33 cases, was challenged by several journalists in 1978. No record has been found of Abagnale ever being a member of the Louisiana Bar and no evidence shows he ever worked as an assistant attorney general in Louisiana's Attorney General's Office. In 1978, the Louisiana State Bar Association reconciled all those who took the bar exam and concluded that Abagnale never took the exam using his own name or that of an alias; the State Attorney General's Office examined payments to all employees during the time Abagnale claimed he worked there and concluded that he never worked in the office using his name or an alias.

    • @Jermbot15
      @Jermbot15 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      That makes sense. You pass the bar exam in 1978, you get a piece of paper that says you passed the exam and you get your name in a record that nobody checks unless they have a good reason. Forgery takes care of the piece of paper, and being a conman makes sure that nobody checks the record until you're ready to leave town.

      Wow projection and condescension in a comment that didn't grasp my point.
      Lets examine the context here and see if we can help you figure out where you went wrong. The original post is about the complete and utter lack of evidence that he ever actually passed the bar examination or worked as an assistant district attorney.
      My post starts with "That makes sense" and then goes on to discuss how the certificate they give you as evidence of your passing can be forged, and lack of electronic record keeping makes double checking that certification annoying.
      What makes you think I want to buy into his fantasy? And while you're explaining this utter failure of your intellectual processes, decide how fair it would be for me to leap to conclusions about your dumbass.

    As someone who has actually passed the bar exam in my state, this is really funny. It doesn't matter how smart you are; someone who studies for just 2 weeks won't be able to pass it. The test isn't a simple memorization / regurgitation based exam. Even if someone memorized all of the current law (which is impossible, but i digress), they would still fail the exam because they never learned the nuances of how the laws are applied differently in varying contexts. That understanding comes from practice and training, not simple book reading.
    Still, I loved the movie.
    EDIT: it turns out that he lied or fabricated almost all of his claims. They've either been unverified or actually debunked, including his claims of passing the LA bar and being employed as a doctor, peofessor, and lawyer. The guy isn't a con; he's just a liar that people believed because they wanted his lies to be true.

    Abagnale admitted on his website that some facts had been overdramatized or exaggerated, though he was not specific about what was exaggerated or omitted about his life. In 2020, journalist Alan C. Logan provided evidence he claims proves the majority of Abagnale's story was invented or at best exaggerated. The public records obtained by Logan have since been independently verified by journalist Javier Leiva. In 2023, author and journalist Abby Ellin provided further evidence to challenge Abagnale's claims

      if you even understood what underrated means. Underrated's definition is not "great" or "excellent".
      Oh, you've heard this song that wasn't a single or didn't achieve chart success? Doesn't mean it's underrated.
      Oh ,you like this particular uncommon meal? Doesn't mean it's underrated.
      Oh, you enjoy the work of a musician that is somewhat obscure? Doesn't mean they're underrated.
      You're not special for enjoying something that hasn't been given all of the recognition and respect that you believe it deserves. You're not part of an elite club because you happen to like something that other people may or may not have heard of.
      Who is rating all of these things anyway? Who is rating them so far down this made up list of ratings? Oh? No one?
      If something is actually "underrated" then why do you care? Just enjoy it for what it is.
      Stop saying things are underrated. Just stop it. It's boring.
