Thanks Salah for explaining the Somali situation in Kenya perfectly. Somalis are NOT foreigners in Kenya, but are Kenyans and indigenous to Kenya. In fact, they could be more Kenyan than 37 other ethnic tribes in Kenya, since they are out of 44, the SIXTH largest community in Kenya. So, they are not doing any favor to Kenya, but are just working hard at home and building their country, just like all other Kenyans are. I think it's time all Somalis came out strong on their legitimate Kenyan identity, rather than letting others define them. There is no specific way a Kenyan looks like, which then makes Kenya one of the most diverse countries in Africa, if not the most. The largest percentage of people who call themselves Kenyans are of severely mixed human genetics, a phenomena that is characteristic of East Africa.
Very smart perspective. I think that Somalis in Kenya that hesitate being regared as Kenyans are those that came in as refugees. But as that generation of old somali refugees die off in Kenya, their descendants will feel more Kenyan that Somali because most of them would have never set foot in Somalia and would have lived their whole lives in Kenya as Kenyans.
It's unfortunate to see how bad governance can lead to people fleeing from their countries and still get oppressed abroad. I'm sure if those Somalis were been harassed by city council askaris or even paying protection money to cartels, they would NEVER speak the truth on camera for fear of persecution and retaliatory attacks. On the other hand, it's good to see a good level of integration and the ability of not only Somalis, but foreign nationals working and making ends meet in Kenya. Infrastructure and social amenities like schools, hospitals and parks should be erected. A functional public transport system could really ease congestion and the youth should be empowered to gain meaningful education. Wi-Fi hot spots should be an agenda for the aspiring MP so that the youth could learn tech skills. Today for instance is Friday and here in the UK in the company where I work, we have scheduled maintenance of computers which is always done remotely by techies from Hyderabad India. If Kenyan youths can be empowered to do the same, it can really transform their lives.

Exactly, I have been saying that all over social media, but people seem not to understand that. Somali are the 6th largest tribe in Kenya, out of the 44. They could even be more Kenyan than the other 37. However, I think our Somalis need to be more vocal about their Kenyan identity. They should shape their narrative, and not let other define it for them
@@box5319 My friend all you know and believe comes from the white mans media. I hope you educate your self. @@pinchesmbuche4354 It should be of note that Eastleigh is what it is because of Kenyan people. Our economy has always been the largest in the region for over 50 years. Kenya has a big middle class and also millions in formal employment thus providing a huge, reliable customer base. They can't invest in small economies like Burundi and increase. Even the choice of Nairobi instead of places near Somalia like Wajir or Garissa is quite telling.
Excellent job with this video highlighting this cosmopolitan business district. Very comprehensive coverage. I hope policy makers would watch. Please keep bringing us this type of content.

Somali WW2 veterans were settled here in Eastleigh in the late 1940's by the British Colonialist, and coincidentally the Nubian veterans were settled in Kibera. Earlier on the indian coolies were already established on the outskirts and places such as Grogan Pangani and Parklands.
Great info there which i dint have before
But Somalis in Kenya are native Kenyans. The division of birders was nit unique to Somalis. All Afruca was divided up by colonisers. You cannot lump Kenyan Somalis with the others you mentioned. The Indians and Nubians were brought in from other countries by the British.

Beautiful content but I feel like the term “little Mogadishu” little Italy, little China...(usually referred to migrants neighborhoods around the world) doesn’t really fit well with Eastleigh because it Erases the existence of greater northern Kenyans like Somali Kenyans, boranas, gabras and all the other northerners who’ve been contributing to the business
Warya unless you are suffering from some form of inferiority complex, the fact is north Eastern somalis have never been the true movers and shakers in Eastleigh and their overall contribution to the dynamics of Eastleigh is really insignificant. The tittle Mogadishu is befitting of Eastleigh to its fullest.

@@sevenscounty409 I dislike people who try to divide Somalis. It doesn't matter where they come from. Remember the borders are just imaginary lines created by imperialism. The North Eastern part of Kenya just needs good infrastructure to connect everyone. We need highways from Kenya to Somalia. We need bustling towns full of people from EVERY community. We need the border to be open so that the Somali community in Kenya and Somalia are not separated. We also need to see Kenyans thriving in Somalia the same way Somalis are thriving in Kenya. We need to be more connected. The Somali government and the Kenyan government should work together on these infrastructural developments so that both countries feel like they each played a part in the development. We need everybody to be free to live life how they want. We need to tear down all barriers to this unity such as religious differences, tribal differences, economic differences, cultural differences. We don't need the "us vs them" mentality. We need to mix with each other so that we are one. I hope we all agree

Come on Badi do something to this economic hub. Those roads need to be fixed. Eastliegh should be having the most paved roads and walk ways as it contributes more than any other place to the nairobi county. What a shame. even drainage systems are a problem. Come on man. The place could even contribute more if the proper infrastructure is in place. What do these policy folk at city hall doing. Not thinking at all. Infact eastliegh should be its own city run by a different entity.
You raise very good points. If the national, county or local governments improved the infrastructure (roads, drainage, sewage, water, electricity, waste removal, street cleaning, etc), there would have been more investments and business growth which would have created more jobs and more tax revenues for the government. No one is even trying or proposing a solution. Any yes, Eastleigh can be a city of its own. The concept of a city within a city is very common in developed countries but seems to be an anathema in Kenya.
@@zakariafarah1101 Its all about controlling revenues. If eastleigh did not contribute to the Nairobi county exchequer there will be less for county officials to eat.

They butchered themselves during the war of that dictator... boss don’t be so deluded that you forget to use your insight on my statement .
Couldn't agree more. Kenya is a diverse country and there is no specific way a Kenyan looks. Only ignorant people think Kenyans look a certain way.
Literally; I live in a predominantly Somalis area in Nakuru
somalis are our fellow kenyans
Looks like you have been away from home for a very long time. All those things you say are not new in Kenya.
