Virpil MT50 CM3 Gimbal Base for Star Citizen - First Impressions & Simpit Installation

  • Installing and testing the Virpil MT-50CM3 Joystick Base, as well as first impressions. It's literally clutch and makes traditional HOSAS controls for space sims even better. The gimbal can be adjusted with a clutch/damper on a per axis basis, and this allows us to use it as an omnidirectional throttle.

      Another thing, when switching out the default spring for the soft spring, did you have to lubricate the soft spring with grease?

    Awesome! Really glad to see the CM3 features being used like this!
    I've been testing versions of my warbrd dampers this week, finally on a design that performs as you are describing the cm3, nice smooth motion, little less muscle fatigue in keeping aim on targets over long sessions, I've ended up dropping the springs back down to light as I don't need the spring force to push back on me as much with the dampening present.
    I still need to figure out the adjustability, I currently need to take the stick out of the base to tweak the tension, but I should have a solution for that come final version!
    Not managed to cross paths on teamspeak, is there somewhere I can throw you a message, get some stuff sent out to you, the Omnithrottle adapter and stuff for you to try out if you are interested.

      Sounds like an awesome project to add dampers to the WarBrd. I still prefer its dual cam design in action.

    "Best control method for space sims" - That's subjective and very dependent not only on the sim, but on how that sim works.
    Two sticks in SC is ideal for Decoupled mode (as the ship acts like it would in space, with momentum).
    However it makes a lot less sense in Coupled mode. In this case, a throttle makes more sense. This base however, does add to the value of using it in couple mode.
    I do wish you could tell the game which one you want as the default. I currently use a Stick, Throttle, and Pedals and find i can move just as well as those that claim "two sticks are best".

    4:45 cam springs allow for this, but i would assume creating 3rd party cams would be a nice way to FINE TUNE the feel. Damn wish i had access to all this now, but i'll have to wait. i hope to manufacture sim pit fun at some point. like ideally i wanna experment with a saddle style system more like the vandull ships sitting in charis gets uncomfortable

    • @AfterimageFlight
      @AfterimageFlight  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found it was hard to tell where the center is with the clutch holding the stick because it changes how the resistance feels passing over it. The largest detent really helps with going from one direction and resetting to idle.
      Custom Cams will really be awesome to fine tune it.
      I almost think an old motorcycle frame would make a good basis for setting that up, but I'm not sure if the cost would make that difficult.

      I'm using the Heavy Springs and the Default Cams in the WarBRD base (right stick) with a 50mm extension. Though some space simmers prefer the cosmosim cams. I started off in Flight Sims so I prefer the default I think.

    I've heard of people offloading the weapon firing groups to the left stick so as to improve flying and aiming accuracy with the right stick. Have you tried this? Thoughts?

    • @AfterimageFlight
      @AfterimageFlight  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it would feel unnatural to me. The trigger does not require that much force to activate, even to the second stage, certainly not enough to displace the stick enough to make it miss. I don't see how it would throw off aim, but that's just me.

    Way to instantly make me regret my VKB order that hasn't even shipped yet xD I'd been considering if there was some way I could do exactly that with the Y axis. You don't know how much time I spent scripting in Thrustmaster T.A.R.G.E.T. so I could have HOTASAS control. My Warthog throttle acts as a forward-only trim for my left stick Y axis.

      Basically standard HOSAS, with transnational movement on left, and rotational on right/pedals. You can see more here.

    All in at current setup what would you estimate the cost minus the computer and monitor?
    Edit: also, very nice setup!

    • @kontoname
      @kontoname ปีที่แล้ว

      The most costly component is time. You spend dozens and hundreds of hours researching, planning, trialing, dialing, setting up, learning and re-adjusting. Take your hourly wage and multiply just by a hundred and you'll quickly find out that it's an extensive project where costs are actually the least of your worries.
      You could easily work more / harder / spend time on educating yourself and progressing to a higher position to buy the hardware - but you will not always find the time to work on a project like this.
      As for costs of the bases, grips and extensions - plus a few other gadgets like pedals, screens etc. you can quickly build yourself a spreadsheet and add up. Consider roughly 500 for base + stick plus another 300+ for pedals, another 200-300 per screen and button box. Then you have your estimate. At the lowest I'd say about 1,5k - 2k (considering what you really count like chair, the simrig, cover parts etc.) and there is no upper limit.

    How long did it take for you to get you order from Virpil?

  • @Sparky_007
    @Sparky_007 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, for Star Citizen, you can just set 'Cruise Control' by a simple toggle keybind. So, well at least in that game, I'm not sure I'd need the left stict to function that way. I can see how the tension would be more useful for something like DCS and MSFS.
    These things are just soooo expensive though. Everyone says they're basically the best out there. But well. Buying dual stick and base mounts is like buying a RTX 4090. :) Maybe more $$ ?? haha
