The only reason she claims living off of 27K is "easy" is because she's living off of her brother. If she were actually living off of 27K, her net income would be roughly $1,800, not $3,000+. If her brother chose to cut her off, her lifestyle would drastically decrease, her rent alone would be over 2/3rds of her net income!

Yeah she's borrowing over $1000 a month of her brother's money and budgeting off of it like it's income. I was wondering how the heck she was making $27k and spending almost $40k.
As a Ph.D. Graduate in the field of graduation, I’m sad to say that she will soon find out professors in education or other jobs with PhD requirements in the field of education don’t make much more than public school teachers 😅
She does not realize how disrespectful she is being to her brother. If she respected him, paying him back would come before perfume and most other shopping.
Some siblings don’t care. I don’t expect my sibling to pay me back. Except you’re white a lot of immigrants family leave like that. We say we loan you money but we don’t really expect to get paid back
@@shachede6828 exactly. Unless my siblings owe me a RIDICULOUS amount of money, I would only expect around half of that returned. And if it's not a big deal, I don't care. If I am living comfortably and that "loan" does affect me, it is okay. If you are struggling financially, the loan may be more detrimental but I say do not loan if you cannot afford it.
PhD is not necessarily good early in life unless you have a path through the university itself. My experience in higher Ed leads to some poor teachers because they do not have real world experience to bring to the classroom.
Definitely not making it work if we're going into debt each month and avoiding paying our family back while we spend $320 on perfume because we deserve it. With a PhD, good luck finding a tenured position anywhere. It's more likely to be an adjunct teacher getting paid part time without benefits, and teaching the same classes you took to get your PhD while under the "Publish or Perish" pressure of churning out academic papers to stay relevant. We haven’t even mentioned student loans
Saving doesn't transfer generations if the parents were money hoarders instead of money savers. My grandfather saved every penny, to the point that my mom had old clothes, bad dental care, and the cheapest food growing up. And then he died not long after retirement so she wondered: "what was the point of that??" I watched my parents struggle with money when I was a child, which made me want to save and have extra.
No your grandfather was a stingy and selfish man. That’s not saving that’s a Scrooge. My grandpa passed his wealth to this children and wife and my dad used that to make more and passed than my sibling so we are set and will do the same for our kids to give them even much better life.
@@shachede6828 this was my point, if parents hoard money or are scrooges instead of savers, the kids will not see the value in saving. I'm glad your grandpa had a better approach.
Like it may have made sense to roast the food budget if the girl in the video was unemployed and had the extra time to grocery shop and meal prep, but not everyone has the same 24 hours in a day, especially not PhD students.
She also has a upass, meaning her tuition covers the cost of having free bus and access to the lightrail in seattle. The fact that's she's spending so much on transportation is ridiculous.
The problem is that ever since the creation of the internet the poor can look into the every day life of the rich. Then everyone wants to be rich or at least look rich. So people start to buy stuff they can't afford and stuff they don't even want just to impress people they don't know or even care about. Now the lower and middle class are struggling even harder because they're so pressured to buy the newest and greatest of everything. "I know I only make $15 an hour but if I buy this LV bag people will like and respect me." This is a very sad mentality to have.
The greatest financial decision I ever made was to go to grad school, because it taught me how to be happy living on diddly-squat. But I was actually living on diddly-squat, not buying $300 perfumes or using my brother as an ATM.
There's absolutely no way to ACTUALLY live on 27K in Seattle. You either don't actually live IN Seattle or your living expenses are being HEAVILY subsidized by someone else. 70K qualifies you for low income housing here. I make ~190k and I live in a modest apartment. 200k/yr is middle class here.
There is a lot of people who actually live in Seattle and make less than 27K. Rent a room with roommate + food is less than $1000 per month. You just need to live spartanly.
Ride bike and public transit, 70 dollar groceries every week. No pet. Cheap place and sit in univ library all day. Do all this and you'll have enough left over to invest while living in Seattle at 27k.

Every time I see Graham reacting to these videos, it makes me want to record a video about my own finances to have him react to. Which is not a bad idea at all, I guess… Fresh content + happy audience! haha If you decide to take on this idea, I would like to be part of it, please! 😁
That transportation cost is pretty high. She's in Seattle and goes to UW which is basically in the heart of Seattle. Public transit in the area is pretty good. That will save her a lot of money
I'd love to see how her dictionary defines 'doable'. Living off of 10k a year is 'doable', too if you use credit card and amass debt. That's a dangerous message to show young people and shows a really bad example, uncommented. Quote in the Original Video: "I do not think I'm irresponsible with my money"... Girl, you're not even spending your own money, you spend either your brother's money or the credit card company's money. I'd love to see a financial audit from Caleb Hammer with her 😄
She's in debt because of "Instant gratification". Expensive perfumes, eating out etc. She literally spends more than she earns and has debt to top it off. Gosh this is bad. She's literally broke but is content ? Wow this is new.😅
If she lives on campus, owning a car and parking on campus would be more than what she is currently paying on transport. Universities really fleece students on that
Graham is different from most people in that he genuinely doesn't care about spending money now and only cares about the future. I admittedly have a very hard time relating to that. I think Graham is just wired differently.
Part of the reason why her brother works hard may be to support his family. May be her brother values her not having to stress about money more than getting paid back quickly. Sacrificing his opportunity cost may be worth it to him. Also, minimum wage in Seattle is over $15 per hour. The PhD stipend is less than any other full-time worker in the city.
nah graham I gotta disagree with you on that one. Perfumes, or colognes don't all smell the same. I feel like you only understand once you start to use them. Me personally I'm guilty to spedning a decent amount on cologne but never an individual purchase over $125.
There’s plenty of different consultants! My boyfriend works for a consulting firm and they working in the building a safety realm Cities hire them for positions like building officials, permit techs, building inspectors, engineers and things along those lines. A lot of government jobs actually hire consultant employees
In my opinion no one "deserves" anything, there's just what you can afford and what you can't, if you can't afford something then by definition you don't deserve it because you either don't provide a value equal to that kind of thing in your work or you aren't diligent enough in your saving
I'm with you on establishing good habits now at this pay rate, establishing a solid base. If I were her, I would personally cut back somewhere and add in paying my brother back even if it was a small amount to chip away at repayment. To me, it's way more important to keep the sister brother relationship strong and not carry the guilt of delaying paying the debts

Sometimes doing what makes you happy is important. There are people who do what they don’t like and make a lot of money are miserable. But if you live on a lower income maybe have a side hustle.
She’s actually spending over $36 K a year. I don’t see any way that she could both reduce her spending and contribute $500 a month to an IRA. That would leave her with less than $2 K oer month to live on, and her housing is more than half of that. For the moment, she really needs to get her spending under control so that she is not sinking deeper into debt. She has a good start on her retirement investing, and, because she started early, that money is growing even if she has to take a pause on contributions while she completes her degree.
