    Picked up a 2010 MS3 couple days ago, used, think it needs new spark plugs, maybe new ignition coil packs (stutters when using the turbo, but runs good when driving normally. no knocks, no smells, nothing). Overall, so far I'm loving it.

      @@bottom_lizard192 Needed new spark plugs, as all 4 of them had heavy carbon deposits. two of them had the outer housing split wide open, the remaining other two had visible cracking on the housing.
      And the GDI needed to be cleaned/serviced.
      What a night and day difference afterwards.

    This makes me want to buy a roller and put my engine in it, my speed is falling apart from inside, the last owner aggressively ripped all the panels off and everything creeks

      @@Oxidon hell yea man that's pretty rare, depending on how much u got it for. Just so you're aware it does have some issues to be aware of like the high pressure fuel pump internals are weak so if you plan on modifying your car at all upgrade that first. Also rear engine mounts are weak and cylinder 3 i've heard can lose compression because of the stock intake manifold making it run lean. First gen had problems with the vvt and timing chain, but 2010-2013 they fixed that. Also change ur oil every 3k miles

      I have a 2012. It was bone stock in 2013 when I bought it and I now have lowering springs, short shifter, cold air intake and turbo down pipe and wheels. Won’t do much else to the car as it’s my daily and upgraded my fun to a Corvette. But…. Those small improvements made a world of difference in handling and the cars pep. Biggest game changer was down pipe. The original DP is plastic and has a kink in it. You won’t regret the small mods for that extra umph. I also put a BOV on it bc I enjoy the sound. It’s all about how the car makes you feel after all. Good luck with it and wishing you many smiles per gallon. 🎉

    I mean, the Speed was here first, and Ford heavily borrowed from it for both the Focus ST and RS. So the ST is more like a slightly detuned Speed. The "better one" was called the Tech Package and included the screen on 2013 cars only.

    • @FrankShaft
      @FrankShaft  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      oh really i didnt know it was only for 2013 models only. Pretty sure all they used is the ST and RS were the blocks and architecture, still super interesting. Also that the first gen speed3 had the same engine making 263hp in 2007!

    • @jamesrather1510
      @jamesrather1510 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FrankShaft they're all on the same Ford C1 platform (ST, RS, and MS3). Hence why FoMoCo is stamped all over various parts on the Speed

    • @FrankShaft
      @FrankShaft  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jamesrather1510 What I'm seeing is that ford created that c1 platform and hired mazda and volvo engineers to help with it and then they made the 2.3 turbo in my MS3 and first generation mazda3. So wouldn't it be fords engine just as much as mazdas?

    Bro try getting a stage 1 tune and having the limiter for first and second removed. The car comes alive and is a lot quicker!

      yea I'm going to get a blowoff valve and start modding somewhat soon like a downpipe, intake, and tune

    This car/engine was essentially the test platform for what became the 2.0 ecoboost and 2.3 ecoboost. This engine is loaded with problems that were all revised in the ST and RS/Mustangs. If you buy one of these in 2024 and it's ever had any modifications or has over 75k miles, you can reasonably expect to need to rebuild the engine soon. If you're looking around for that cheap hot hatch that's fairly dependable and won't require you to dump a ton of money into, this isn't it. The Focus ST is easily twice as reliable. But if you do have money to waste on this car, it's untamed, not electronically suppressed tendencies are a much more fun experience. Just be ready to spend a lot of money and time working on it.

    • @FrankShaft
      @FrankShaft  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No sure how reliable the ecoboosts are. I know the 1.6 ecoboosts are not reliable because they need good maintenance and are not tolerant to bad maintenance. Same with the 2.3 in the mazda. It suffers from some oil starvation problems and the vvt commonly goes bad. As well as turbo seals. But if you well maintain your car it will be reliable. From my knowledge the engine in this car is far from extremely unreliable, but is also far from extremely reliable.

    • @christopherpauley8174
      @christopherpauley8174 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FrankShaft I was referring to the super widely used 2.0 ecoboost in the ST. That engine is in a massive number of vehicles worldwide and has a very low failure rate. It's a closed deck design and totally solid. It suffered from none of those issues you are talking about there. Beating all the factory OE short comings is what you have to do yourself if you want an MZR 2.3 to survive. Manage PCV well, address the imbalance in the intake manifold if you're running more boost, change oil every 3k miles (not 5), change plugs often, upgrade your turbo drain and supply lines, and pay attention to the little things that can cause knock and just don't run it hard if that's going on. That's what can help this engine live, but at the end of the day neither it or the Ecoboost 2.0 is gonna have that reliability factor like a Honda or Toyota engine. Ford saw all those problems I just mentioned on the MZR and did address them with the Ecoboost 2.0.

      @@christopherpauley8174 yea don't this as a first car for your kid for sure. I change the oil every 3000, but ill keep in mind your comment. Ill look into the turbo lines and definitely get a catch can for the pcv
