Last month, it was announced by Amazon Prime Video that a sequel to Road House is in the works following the success of the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring remake of the 1989 classic. Now, the sequel is being discussed by Gyllenhaal, who is teasing his excitement about returning to the role of Elwood Dalton and describing the "expansive" project as being even bigger than the first.
When speaking with TVLine, it was expressed by Gyllenhaal that his excitement for the project is immense.
Ideas that had been explored for the sequel were mentioned by him. The excitement about being able to bring those ideas to life was also shared. According to him, the sequel will be expansive and bigger, and he can't wait to film it.
Currently, details about the Road House follow-up are scarce. It has been confirmed that Gyllenhaal will return, though the return of director Doug Liman remains uncertain. According to Amazon MGM Studios, when the sequel was announced, Road House had attracted nearly 80 million worldwide viewers to date. The film, which premiered on Prime Video on March 21, achieved a record-breaking viewership of over 50 million worldwide during its first two weekends, becoming Amazon MGM Studios' most-watched produced film debut ever on a global basis.
In Road House, the character of Elwood Dalton, portrayed by Gyllenhaal, is an ex-UFC fighter trying to escape his dark past and penchant for violence. Struggling to get by on his reputation, he is spotted by Frankie (Jessica Williams), the owner of a roadhouse in the Florida Keys. Frankie hires him as her new bouncer, hoping to stop a violent gang working for crime boss Brandt (Billy Magnussen) from destroying her bar. The stakes increase when ruthless gun-for-hire Knox (Conor McGregor) arrives, leading to brutal brawls and escalating bloodshed, making the tropical Keys more dangerous than anything Dalton ever faced in the Octagon.
While details of Road House 2 are not yet known, it can be safely assumed that plenty of action and fights will be featured, as in the original Road House. During an earlier interview with Comic Book, Gyllenhaal shared some insights about the fight scenes, specifically recalling that he had to remind his co-star, real-life former UFC champion McGregor, not to actually hit him in the face.
