+Night Raid He is playing an alto in the video but since it's not in the original key anyway you could play it on any sax. The way to tell alto from tenor in videos where the size isn't easy to see is to look at the neck. A straight neck is an alto and a slightly curved neck is a tenor. ( of course bari is easy to see)
Coming to the sax as a guitarist, I thought it would be a pretty easy instrument to learn. So casually, I decided that the first piece I'd learn would be Giant Steps... Boy, was I wrong :D
That's brilliant Les! Thank you very much for your comments and I'm really pleased that you are benefiting from the videos. Once I've finished the Beginners Course I'll be adding some more advanced videos so hopefully they'll be right up your street! DC.
The sax is quite an easy instrument to start on but like many other instruments, mastering it takes a lifetime! To play a song like careless whisper well? You could have the notes under your fingers within a week of regular practice but it's unlikely to sound great until you've developed a solid tone and consistent sound which could take anywhere from 1 day to several years! Everything in good time! The most important thing is enjoying yourself while you do it and picking it up regularly.
Glad you mentioned the over-animated finger movement, your reason for etc. I watched Charlie Parker as his 'fingering' technique was amazing, keeping fingers on the pearls, etc... Thanks for this tutorial. Great! xoxo
Yeah absolutely, you'll find most professional players tighten up their technique when it is needed and then become more flamboyant on easier passages. As you are developing its very important to keep your technique as tight as possible :) Thanks for the comment ^^
yes great video, I just got started today, never played a sax until 1 hr. ago. between this video and another one that showed me the notes, I nailed it thank you
Yep, some people can and it's a great skill. I find many people need a helping hand though, there is enough to be thinking about when first starting out on Sax. These videos are merely here to get people playing tunes asap so that they might carry on playing to the stage when they can work out songs for themselves. There is always the option of pausing after the demo, have a go, then compare your version with the version I teach too :-) Best wishes, DC
Hi Smet, Taking up the sax can be quite daunting but don't worry, just enjoy the experience and let your sound and ability develop over time. Allow yourself the time to make mistakes and the odd squeak. But enjoy the journey. It'll be worth it in the end my friend! DC
Thanks for replying. I'm always trying different reed sizes. But I think I will start trying different brads too. I was always playing Vandoren but I tried a Rico, which is significantly shorter in lenght, and I had much more control.
Hi Cely, Absolutely. The difference between beginner and intermediate saxes is the refinement in tuning, response, build and resistance of the tube. An intermediate sax off the starting blocks won't hinder you but it will mean that you can probably stick with that same saxophone for a lot longer. DC
Thank you for your comment, I'm pleased that you can make use of it! Good (slightly late) luck in the concert! Remember to enjoy the experience and look up from the music stand from time to time ;-) DC
I've been playing saxophone for about 6 or 7 years now (I'm now 15) and I must say, if you want a good piece to play, try In The Mood. It has to be my favorite that I have ever personally played.
If you like quality musicianship and lots of instruments playing off one another, then I recommend the whole album (The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life) highly. If possible, get yourself the US version, as it has an extra track in the form of a reggae/mariachi version of Ravel's Bolero.
Hi Martin, Not far off, I'm based near Sheffield! Glad you have joined the sax world. it's an awesome place to be. Keep playing as much as possible and when you feel ready get involved with other musicians locally. You'll have a blast, best of luck to you! DC
thank u so much =) i learned (Aint No sunshine when shes gone) in the first 15 miniutes of trying to play it. u have inspired me to try and play my saxaphone more and more! =D

it's crazy. i do not even play saxophone. i play the guitar. but i'm totally fascinated by your tutorial vids! u do a great job. i honestly consider buying a saxophone :D
Awesome method in teaching Dan. I really enjoy the easy casual teaching style and that you're teaching notes with songs and then teaching ear training as well. This helps me greatly since I wanted to start playing sax and not reading notes right away. Its great ear and memory training. I would love to learn the rest of this song if possible or Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana. Please keep up the great work, your videos are very helpful. - ZB
I would recommend learning "giant steps" as a first song. Horace said "Adversity has the effect of exciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.
So far I've been using mainly the Nigel McGill videos, but you've got some good stuff covered on your feed. I trust you'll be looking at a cover of Zappa's ("Best Band..." version) of Sofa at some point?
I think it might just be my down lights, lol. Although, Paul, the guy who services my sax, cleans it unbelievably well each time. it comes back looking new (and its over 20 years old and taken quite the beating!) DC
Thanks a lot man! :) That made me more secure about playing. I've never played an instrument before, and that made me more confident about it. I would just love to do something special at my age (15). Something to do in my spare time. Something I would be proud of. And this might be it. Once again thanks. (Sorry if there is any grammar flaws, english isn't my mother language. I'm from Denmark, Europe)
