Dan, you are a great teacher. It would be great that you teach us all the rest of the piece. I am certain a lot of people would like you to teach us the rest of the song. Thank you very much.
I cannot read music so I find your lessons very useful, so please upload the full version as well. Could you also upload a lesson of Us and Them (Pink Floyd, the saxophone part)?
Well, as a rule of thumb harder reeds generally give you more presence as does moving the reed higher up. So basically, for a richer or darker tone you want a harder reed as a rule of thumb. (3.5 Vandoren Blue Box are fine). Some people say: Hard reed = Easier higher notes, Louder. Softer Reed = More control, smoother sound. Experiment with moving your reed around to see what effect that has on your sound and...listen, listen, copy - check out Gerald Albright - Georgia on my Mind, DC.
You definitely made my day. I have the partition of Hey Jude but in a higher version with some notes that I just don't know how to play (D double octave - or whatever you call it ;-), so I thought of putting it all an octave lower...did not work...anyhow I am not clear...all I want to say: THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH - I will check out all the rest you have on the net!
That totally depends on a few things and to give you a proper answer I need a bit more info. 1) What type of music do you mostly play on Sax? 2) What mouthpiece do you have? 3) What type of sound are you looking for? Who is a sax player you really like the sound of?
Hey Daniel. Really like your videos. Just bought a saxophone after not playing any instrument since 1994 which was the clarinet. I am hoping you can give a tutorial for "You Can Leave Your Hat On" by Joe Cocker. Let me know. Thanks, Chris
Hi great job with your site, I have learn't lots but I have been trying to find Stand by me on alto sax. Ps I'm still learning so nice and slow thanks.
I play all kinds of music, I have a mouthpiece that came with my sax so I don't know the specs but I know it is a good one, and I want to sound like one of my upper class men who has a very jazy tone but can play other kinds of music vary well.
Rj, rj, rj!! This course is for exactly the opposite reason! I want you to be able to play without reading the dots! Stay tuned though, I'll be doing a note reading course soon and in that there will be many notes to read :-)
Dan - I have always been fascinated with the instrument as a kid. Trying to learn this in my 40s now. One of things I struggle with, and find INSURMOUNTABLE, is the sudden transition of notes from one to another. I'm intrigued as to how the fingers can move so deftly and effortlessly to the next note. Almost looks like the eye needs to read the next note, the brain has to process it, and the fingers fly to the correct keys, all in a fraction of a millisecond. How can this be??? I find the coordination impossible to achieve, and this has been my biggest stumbling block to learn this instrument. Any advise, please? How can I overcome this brick wall?
EEK! Well it could be a couple of things. But first: Use some cold soapy water and clean your mouthpiece, it could be mouldy! Do you clean your mouthpiece each time you play? It could just be dried glucose that we all have in our saliva. A good clean will fix that. It may also just be "Light stain" which comes from your mouthpiece being sat in the sun, it can draw the colouring from the material. If they are still there after a good clean then they're probably nothing to harmful! :-) DC
