Hey can you please do a alto because i just got a a alto saxophone and i am new to it so yeah and i liked the video and subscribe and i want to see how good alto sax is
I just got my alto sax yesterday. This was by far the most informative video I’ve seen on TH-cam. I was actually able to play along with you at the end of the video too. Solid solid stuff man.
Fantastic mate I'm a professional musician singer, guitarist I was given a sax and tried it out for the first time yesterday... Your lesson was the best thanks a lot mate
My daughter is starting sax because she wants to play classic and hip licks. I’ve played sax for at least 10 years. However, I’ve stopped for a few years because of my family and job responsibilities. Now, I’m getting back into it with my daughter. This jam session helps. We want to see more of this. Thanks!
Meanwhile I’m here finding it so difficult to read sheet music without the alphabets written on the top or something. I’m 20 years old and I just bought me a saxophone and I’m getting started in learning something I always wanted to do.
Just ordered my 1st sax, I play guitar, keys, drums and bass… have always wanted to learn, finally took the plunge and I’m pretty excited… I’d like to learn anything you’re willing to share with us honestly, I don’t there’s a wrong lesson.
I started to play sax because of my church pastor was so in love with the sound that sax add to music....... we bought it without anyone knowing how to play it so i took some time to learn the basics.
This is my first time in TH-cam. Thank you, I’m going to learn because I’m biopolar and I thought music will distract my brain. Even though I’m very busy. Thank you. I’m a farmer.
I picked up a Tenor Sax back in 5th grade and into 6th. I even played in the marching band for one our towns parades. Now 10 years later I no longer own a sax but still remember everything I learned. I wanted to "rekindle" my originally love for this amazing woodwind so I was watching a few beginner vids to clean off the rust when i found you. I'm not even kidding, the solo at the end just made me smile soo much from pure joy of listening to this amazing instrument. I hope to one day become a music instructor or teacher to inspire and guide other people who also have a love for music. Really enjoyed the video and keep on keeping on man. 🎷
I just found your u tube site, I am 65 and have always wanted to learn to play sax, but never had confidence to do it, bought an alto now and you' ve got me started playing notes...so, thanks Nigel, Hope you can help me keep going, I really enjoy this. The happy wanderer
I just bought my first tenor saxophone and honestly the reason I took interest is because of the sax player from Eddie and the Cruisers movie. That man could play!!!
I’ve always loved jazz music ever since I watched this show called Little Bill when I was a child. It just sounded so interesting to me. As an adult, I started listening to Masego. He’s who really got me into wanting to learn the saxophone. In 2020, there was the big lockdown, so decided to go ahead and purchase my saxophone. I learned a few lessons, but then I fell off because I started back working so I’m pretty much rusty and need to start over. I’d love to learn the saxophone inside and out so that I can play at events and gigs and whatever else lol. Sax is awesome!
I have recently been playing a lot of video games during summer break and I’ve been getting lazy. I used to be so good at the alto saxophone, and I recently forgot some notes. I just got back into music and I studied this songs so hard so I can impress my friends. Thank you McGill sax school, - Tactical Gamer
Brilliant, Lo-Fi is super cool. Did you check out the Jim Corry masterclass in Sax School last week? Loads of great funky tips in there to help you Carlos!
This was absolutely hilarious for all the wrong reasons. You: a sweet simple jam. You then pass it off to me, with a smile and nodding to my jam. My jam: plain air, horrible squeaking, then me laughing at how you would not be smiling and jamming to that, haha. Great lesson though, I'll just have to keep at it.
Ha! You’ll get there. Remember to keep it super simple - work through this lesson a few more times. Even if you just use one one note, you can get started with jamming. And if you need help getting those first notes out more cleanly, grab my free ToolKit lesson bundle here: saxschoolonline.com/courses/
I learnt how to drive 18 speed transmission recently. Including double clutching and splitting gears..... so I saw a tenor sax.....it looks like a transmission, bc it's got alot of stuff going on at once. I'm about 5 days into having the tenor. I enjoy this page
been a recording musician most of my life mainly as a fretless bassist have my own studio blah blah blah always wanted to learn sax but never in my safe zone as a drummer guitar player kinda dude but here goes just ordered my first sax heres hoping due to lock down covid etc i can learn something new as i dont get to play with other musicians now. peace from scotland.
I’ve been wanting to learn jazz on alto for a while. I work at an antique mall so I saw a Vito for $75. My friend came in to test it and it works amazingly for a beginner sax. I love it already!
one thing i love about your channel and you made me leave other tutorial channels it's because when you are teaching about the notes and where to position your fingers.. you actually have a side angle that show very close where to put your fingers... as for me am a beginner when you are playing the notes without even tells me where to put my fingers i completely lost... YOU GIVE ME MORE CONFIDENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AND WANTING TO LEARN MORE..! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING EASY FOR US BEGINNERS
That was awesome! I am almost 60 & starting back playing my alto after many years. I played in school band, & a little in church, but only know the very basics. I am excited to expand into more sophisticated sounding stuff than Play That Funk Music from Mardi Gras.
Also I’m here cause I’ve been really into John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins lately. Played alto in middle school for 2 years then quit due to changing schools. Got my old saxophone back from my moms house yesterday. So basically here for jazz lol.
Gospel and R&B. I’m 35 and have always been interested in the alto sax. I ordered a fairly cheap beginner one and it will be here 28 Jan 2021. Looking forward to getting started.
I started playing a alto sax but now I’m on tenor. I started to play because I needed something to make me feel better and the alto sax did just that. I stepped away from band for two years due to a sports injury and then tried again this year. I wanted to start off on a alto saxophone ago but I just couldn’t connect to it like I used to. Today (March 23,2021) my band director and I made the decision to try me on a tenor saxophone. I was heartbroken at first but once I started to play the tenor I started to feel better. I wanna get good at the tenor so I can hopefully go back to the alto and be as good as I used to be.
Love these videos! I’ve gotten back into alto sax after 14 years since high school. I’m trying to get into playing some reggae and your videos have been great for getting back into it!
Stick at it. If you need more beginner help, I’ve got a quick start course in my free Tool Kit bundle. You can grab it here: saxschoolonline.com/courses/
I'm returning to Sax and really liked this, what I would love would be a transcript of your improvisation. Then almost play against myself. When I had lessons years back we did this exercise but as a beginner I ended up with a limited range of my own improvisation. I always wanted some Impro. examples to try and then adapt them to my versions mainly at the beginning of my sax journey. I also like ear training but in parallel. I'll be staying tuned and hope to join the school in a short while. Warm regards.
Hi I have a great love gor the saxophone. I have recently brought an Alto sax, just learning how to blow, I'm getting there. This really help a me to understand the notes. I would live to play smooth jazz one day.
Great stuff. We actually have an "Introduction to gospel saxophone" course inside Sax School PRO when you're ready. More info here: saxschoolonline.com/courses/
hey m8 ;) got my alto sax 2 weeks ago, got my self a friend whos is teaching me the basics but I come a lot to your channel to get inspiration and see what can I learn in weeks/months! Thanks! Much appreciated
I'm a multi-instrumentalist strongly considering sax as an instrument that may potentially become my main, currently trying to assess the learning curve. I'm drawn to it originally from jazz, but my interest has been massively spurred by a recently-found passion for ska. I love funk as well. Once i get a saxophone I'll definitely be geared towards these rhythmic, blues-based styles. It looks like the pentatonic scales are pretty easy to play, the only big unknown variable for me is the nuances of getting the mouth and tongue stuff right. I'm at least confident that my knowledge of theory and general musical experience will make the learning curve reasonably approachable 😊
This was the first exercise that really made tonguing click with me. I just picked up a cheap second hand Chinese tenor and started playing. I played for a good few weeks without even knowing that tonguing was a thing, and slurring every note has been a really hard habit to break. Playing along to this is the first time that tonguing felt more intuitive than slurring. Thanks for the help!
I love to play gospel and I love saxophone with all my heart but have no one to teach me and I know I can get to learn it here that is why am here now..😍😍 I love to play with tenor😍😍
alto sax: I played when I was a kid, now in my 30s, just bought a sax today. I'd like to try punk style eventually, do some covers, and some pop covers :)
I’ve been trying to learn to play tenor sax for a while. I did play in my youth, and thought I’d like to get back to it in my more “ mature years”. I’d love to just play some jazzy/ funky tunes. Hope I can make it work!
I purchased my alto saxophone for my 21st birthday. Played alot for a while then post grad university, kids, work and life in general got in the way of my playing. Then my daughter took up clarinet at school. I jammed with her a few years ago for the first time and really enjoyed it. She has gone on to be quite accomplished. As my workload got heavier I stopped jamming which made my daughter very sad. During lockdown I decided to start playing sax with my daughter again. I have one HUGE problem though. I play by ear. I have never been able to read music and have poor comprehension for the letter of each note. My daughter has tried to teach me but I just don't understand. I want to learn sax again to jam properly with my daughter but I feel I'm holding her back as she's so far ahead with her clarinet practice. We did learn Over the rainbow for the clapping for carers on Thursdays, to which at the end I blended into the song See you again from Fast & Furious movie. The song that got me into playing Sax was Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty and Lily was Here, by David A Stewart and Candy Dulfer. I'm currently enjoying the work of Jimmy Sax, in particular his song Una Mattina, which is my secondary reason to practice and learn to play this tune. I am 43 years old... Am I to old to learn properly? PS I still play with a 1½ Reed, is this right??
I did too I practice using just books & youtube for 2 month before signiup for lessons & can play all notes & fingers & read basic notation minus Altissimo gave me a huge head start
Hi Nigel, As a true beginner I'd like to say thank you for the worksheet and backing track. I've give it a quick go and feel more comfortable now I can set my goal as to master this "simple" lesson Cheers 🎷
I'm 61 in a few weeks and I've asked for a saxophone! I've never played a musical instrument nor can I read music but hey I'm so excited to learn. I hope I can even make a sound! Great video new subscriber
Music like Lily Was Here, and a guy in the United terminal at O'Hare international airport that would play everyday, I would hear him everytime we went to pick up my dad when I was very young
Great lesson showing how to improvise. The part that the student and you playing is especially important, not only the student learn to read the notes but he also learns to play with rhythm.
Not only are you a great teacher, but you're also charismatic and really good looking! (I don't even own a sax I was just listening to Coltrane and wondered how it would be to play, thank you for the lessons)
I’ve always wanted to learn from when I was young . I play harmonica / chromatic harmonica in a blues band here in Japan ( I only play by ear , I don’t understand music notation, yet ). I want to learn to play some cool sax blues licks as well to incorporate in my band ( eventually). My main first goal is to eventually get proficient enough to play baker street, which is one of the songs I’m very inspired by , and see where I go from there.
Just getting started, sort of. I've been playing an Akai eWi for about 2 years. I find myself moving into Sax pieces more and more. The more I play and the more I listen to Sax bits, the closer I'm coming to buying the "real" thing, probably Alto. Mostly stumbling through blues and jazz.
i literary just started alto sax today and you made it (when i say this i mean it) SO MUCH EASIER. before i was speaking a lot. i do have exp from clarinet and i used to play flute a few years back but you helped me understand the notes and a lot more. i am pursuing mu dream of playing jazz music. shout out to Mr. Barron for inspiring me to play alto sac
I started playing the sax during the pandemic. I have taught myself as much as I can so far. I am interested in Gospel and Jazz. I need lessons now because I am ready to REALLY learn.
I have just started to learn Alto Sax and I have loved its sound since I was really young I used to play flute a loong time ago as a child so I'm really exited, thanks a lot for this practical tutorial
Just got my tenor sax after 5 years taking lessons with alto sax .very enjoyable now that I am retired. Always loved music, specially sax. Your teaching method is easy to follow even for an old guy !
I had such a fun time jamming with you, I could hear you play and I play as well with the same notes. For the first time sense I got the sax two days ago I felt like I play something epicc yesssss
Trying to teach beginning sax to my son. Your approach is great. Let us know how to work with you more. This intro music is great.. Get the kid involved and playing fast. There also is the always great: C Jam Blues, where you only need ONE note, and it is great! Keep more coming. WE need real music where the beginner needs only a few notes. The pentatonic scale is the best. You got a great idea. Start with the most elementary real music, not so much scales and arduous activity. Thanks.
Ever since I herd the (Pop) song Harden My Heart by Quarterflash I've always wanted to learn to play the Saxophone. I just bought a Selmer Alto Sax yesterday. Brand spanking new. I was renting a Student model Yamaha for two months, but was nervous playing it as I was worried I'd somehow be on the hook if it got damaged. I wasn't going to comment. But you asked what type of music do you want to play. So I guess my answer that came to my mind instantly was pop. Thanks for your help on this journey I'm trying to go on...
The reason i want to start playing sax is because it sounds so cool. I guess i wanted to play jazz, but I'd love to play EVERYTHING, and I'll get there one day for sure!
So I just rented me a Selmer tenor sax today, and im in love with it!! I ended up playing it around 2 hours after I got it, and ive learned so much! I am a Junior in high school, and ive played the clarinet for 5.5 ish years, and im just now starting sax. My goal is to be able to play in a jazz band at school, lets hope I can do it within a week!
Go for it Camron, but be patient. Good to focus on getting some solid skills together. I have some other free stuff that will help you here: saxschoolonline.com/courses/
Great Video. I am an absolute beginner and decided for my 50th Birthday Year to learn to play the saxophone as it always an instrument I've had interest in but never ventured to learn to play until now. Look forward to your additional videos to assist in my learning development.
Beautiful lesson❤️ Thank you so much. I started to learn how to play saxophone three weeks ago. I wasn't even sure what kind of saxophone I have until your lesson😂 I would like to learn how to play jazz style. In regards to you lesson, I would personally learn better how to play the songs if the notes will be emphasized somehow when playing. I mean when changing from one to another. Thank you for your time and effort invested into supporting my development 🙏
Hi Nigel! Thanks for this lessons. I decide to finally learn the horn really late in life so, two years ago I started classes. I love classic jazz but since the advent of Smooth Jazz my love for Jazz took a new level. I like anything funky and fun so, Smooth Jazz, Fussion, Classic and my absolute fave Bossa Nova. My horn is an Alto, a hot Pink Alto Sax; how girlie is thatd. I'm really looking forward to see more stuff in your channel. By the way, I'm a 70s child so, you can imagine the type of mixes and fussion I like in my music 😉🎷
Thanks for watching guys and don't forget to grab the worksheet and practice track here: saxschool.mykajabi.com/easy-sax-jam-worksheet

THANKS
Started playing saxophone because I love the way the artist masego uses his saxophone in a modern way
I did too I practice using just books & youtube for 2 month before signiup for lessons & can play all notes & fingers & read basic notation minus Altissimo gave me a huge head start
Hi Nigel,
As a true beginner I'd like to say thank you for the worksheet and backing track. I've give it a quick go and feel more comfortable now I can set my goal as to master this "simple" lesson
Cheers 🎷
Brilliant Colin. You’re welcome and I hope it helps you.
I just starting to learn to play the Saxophone, I have a Alto Saxophone I am learning to play. Because I love Smooth jazz music.
Great lesson showing how to improvise. The part that the student and you playing is especially important, not only the student learn to read the notes but he also learns to play with rhythm.
Cheers Guy! Glad you enjoyed this.
Thank you so much. This is so helpful. I really want to play gospel songs

Not only are you a great teacher, but you're also charismatic and really good looking! (I don't even own a sax I was just listening to Coltrane and wondered how it would be to play, thank you for the lessons)
I wanted to start because I love jazz and the instrument looks fantastic
Same
That’s not all you play on a sax if you want to do a Marching band you hardly ever play jazz
I’ve been watching these videos of yours on an evening and finally ordered my first saxophone - here goes ….. wish me luck! 👍
Go for it Matty!
I enjoyed it... I felt ontop of the world playing after you... thanks McGill Music Sax School
I felt on top of the world after playing of this thank you so much!
Tenor sax here, just picked it up today. Thanks for your extremely clear and helpful lesson!
I'm going to be spending a couple hours watching this video. Very good thanks.
I started playing the sax during the pandemic. I have taught myself as much as I can so far. I am interested in Gospel and Jazz. I need lessons now because I am ready to REALLY learn.
This was my first time ever playing and I'm hooked! Thanks for this!
I have been playing for over 6 years but I'm just now getting into the jazz part of it I've always been playing with a classical mouthpiece.
Thanks Guillermo! Great to hear that.
i like jazz standards , older songs , herbie hancock , things like that . thanks for the help .
Thanks for helping me out with this lesson,
I'm having issues on identifying the notes on each keys.
I started my sax journey , and this is the perfect 👌 lessons i needed.
I already feel like musician 🧑🎤
I had such a fun time jamming with you, I could hear you play and I play as well with the same notes. For the first time sense I got the sax two days ago I felt like I play something epicc yesssss
Awesome!!!!!
Thanks.
I am very new to sax. Just love playing it.
I’m here to learn to play Dixieland and other jazz. Love this. Thanks!
The reason i want to start playing sax is because it sounds so cool. I guess i wanted to play jazz, but I'd love to play EVERYTHING, and I'll get there one day for sure!
Just started 3 months ago at age 62 ..... r&r and swing/big band 🎷
I think so too. An absolute beginner wouldn't know which note to what you were playing each time
