I Broke Down and bought my Dream Ferrari, a 360 Modena. It looked to be really nice, with just a bit of cosmetic wear! But within 20 seconds of it's arrival, I found out that I had been scammed...

Unfortunately, the auction house is at the behest of the seller. They're just a 3rd party that helps with the listing and transaction. They don't have the time, resources, or knowledge to do a thorough inspection of every vehicle. They have disclaimers all over the site detailing such. The sellers should be made public so they can be banned after shady auctions.

    • @funkyzero
      @funkyzero 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

@@erickorff1919 the auction house in this case should be acting as a mediator for foolishness such as this. the car was misrepresented.. ie: the seller lied. did CP ban this seller? demand they re-run the auction with a proper disclosure? nope. so why pay the premiums at a place like this when you are better off just buying off of facebook marketplace? you can get screwed for a lot less money there. same reason i buy from amazon now instead of ebay. ebay wont back anything and hold sellers accountable. but hey, if CP wants to get a name for not doing anything about scammers who use their service to rip people off, then so be it.

When it fails its gonna be huge $$$ but its also PITA (expensive) to change for "preventive maintenance" -> many owners overlook this and rest is ... well ... what Sam is experiencing. Really glad we got to see the story on this one at last, Sam.
Sorry you got burned on it though - real shame, because it looked like a nice car (and it is a lovely colour).
You did the right thing getting out of it I'm sure and pleased that you didn't lose too much money in the end.
I do think the auction house should not be getting off scot-free on this one though

Thanks Cxxxxxx. I recently purchased a Ford Escape from Cxxxxx, supposedly only had hail damage. Took it off the trailer, put it in gear and the transmission light lit up. Transmission was ruined. I got the same reaction from Cxxxxx that Sam did, essentially, "stick it in your ear." . I sent it back to the auction to get rid of it and they listed it with mechanical issues. I lost $2,000. About 50% of what I paid for it. Buyer beware.

By copart standards it was run and drive and would not have been mechanical… mechanical only gets posted if it’s obviously misfiring, smoking, knocking etc… this car at a copart yard would have been listed the same way.

I think that you should have taken legal advice and pursued it with the auction….. whilst you are in a position to minimise loss and absorb some loss, others aren’t. As a home gh profile TH-camr you should set an example, if only to safeguard others falling in to the same problem. It also may fall under fraud laws and need to be progressed within the police arena. The key is intent to defraud.

What I don’t get usually when you buy a car from the auction you can take a look at before you even buy, when I as a kid I used to go with my dad to the auctions “clean title auctions not copart “ and we could even go days before to check out the car etc

@@Afentiko smiles per gallon bud. You said this was your dream car but yet you sounded like you were going to sell it regardless. So maybe you just shouldn’t buy from auctions sight unseen.
If you want a toy. You build it. Have fun with it.
If it means putting a better power plant into it then go for it.

You did the right thing in getting rid of the Ferrari, based on the facts as described. If you didn't have the passion for the car any longer then it makes no sense to expend money or effort to make it right. The one exception to all this for me is, having seen Andrew's LS swap Ferrari, I might have wanted to duplicate that as a long-term driver. I'm not a purist when it comes to foreign cars (not a collector), so I would rather maintain an LS Ferrari that ruins than a finicky all-original Ferrari with problems just waiting to show their expensive faces. Having watched you deal with your other Ferraris, it seems clear that you base your decisions more on $$ than on personal feelings about a car, since for you, there will always be another interesting/exciting car coming down the pike.

i would have made a stink at the auction and demanded they do something about it or i would have complained to, well in the uk we have trading standards to help get our money back, and they usually win. i get why you didnt make more of this but there are lots of car auction sites in the US, so would it have been all that bad?

Weak battery aka slow turnover will effect your numbers sometimes, as well as Throttle not open wide. Maybe its diff on a Ferrari but in most cases you have to have the throttle plates open full and a FULL battery turning fast to get good numbers from your test.

You made the right decision. I, on the other hand, would have been stupid enough to rebuild the original engine, spend tons of frustrating hours tinkering, maybe getting it to run right, and try to enjoy it knowing I’d never get my money back out of that car. I’d also make a modification to the trans cooler. No more oil to water cooler. I’d switch it to an oil to air cooler with it’s own fan.

Sam, we're always worried about your sanity. Letting go of a pit for a livable loss sounds like a good decision.
I'm sitting on a similar scenario with salvage auction car.
There's lots of possible "mechanics specials" on FB that could make at least make use of the engine, but I have serious doubts about the cars on FB marketplace. My gut says they're often scams of some sort. So I may just sell the salvage car for a significant loss just to get my garage space back.
