These keys are a step backwards. As an example banks have been working for decades to streamline and simplify transactions to where eventually we no longer need even a physical card (e.g. credit or debit), but for the last year now if you’re a landlord with tenants in say an apartment building or a mobile home or RV park the banks charge you a hefty fee for each rent payment transaction for each tenant if you allow the tenants to use either a credit or debit card. So what has this resulted in? As a tenant you must now pay your rent bill with a written cheque - do you get my point?

On most accounts, I don't know if this is true for apple, you typically get some kind of recovery key (a series of numbers, or some such) that can act as a back up. If you lose your key(s) then you can use the backup code to get into the account and remove them. However, without such a code, no, you would not be able to get into the account to remove the keys. Being able to get into the account (without an emergency backup code) would defeat the existence of the keys.

The whole point of using passwords etc. is to eliminate need for physical key (which could be stolen or lost) as the password is only held in our mind. Now that passwords can be stolen, physical key is back and crimes return to physical key again.

In Chicago, armed robberies (and car jackings) are increasing significantly. Considering the scenario of a robber, (1) stealing your phone, (2) taking all your personal belongings (including your keys and security key), (3) stealing your car, and (4) demanding that you divulge your phone password (under threat of physical violence), then how does the security key provide protection?
I have a security key, just one and to use it I have to use the stupid apple dongle, I use it on one thing only but my question is twofold: #: 1 is it possible to use the same security key for more than one thing? And #:2 if the answer is yes, how do I do that? I am a bit techie but I have learning difficulties so complicated stuff can go over my head unfortunately so if you do have the answers please could you kinda explain it in a simplified way otherwise i would be completely confused or please if you know of a data sheet that could help me step by step, this would be brilliant. I thought about contacting the company that makes my security key but in their website I couldn’t find a way to ask the question. Thank you.
NFC tags come in a lot of different styles. Everything from stickers to magnets buttons is really pretty in this what they can do with the NFC technology with that in mind you could take an NFC tag and put it on your desk and that way when you’re sitting at your desk working all day all you have to do is move your phone to the appropriate spot on your desk and it would take an unlock. This could be very helpful, if the security key manufactures adopted some of these other form factors, and I think a great one would be a watch band something you wear already
No idea what the added value is compared to the alphanumeric password I only know and Face ID. After 10 wrong attempts my iphone gets whiped. Do you need to add the key every time you want to open your iphone?
So, if I understand this, you don't need the key to just log into your phone (you just use your PW/FaceID) its only when you log into your Apple Account. (as a second-factor of authorization), right? So if someone got your phone and PW, they can't change your AppleID PW. This is great if you lose your phone, but if someone robs you, they will take your phone and keys (and security key). Seems like Apple could incorporate this into AirTags and/or Apple Watches, to use them as keys (need to enter your watch password on your watch, and the AirTag has to be very close to the phone, or print a QR code on the back that you can scan with non-NFC devices). I literally just took all my keys off my key ring because I hate the bulk. (my house has a keypad lock). So i just have my car keyfob and AirTag.
The Apple ID password is the easiest one to be changed by a thief who stole your iPhone after he sees your passcode. Even the 2FA won’t help. So, should the phone no attached to that Apple ID must be from another iPhone? Any advice?
Not a bad video guys. You didn't really sell me on why I would need one (two actually) and related to that is my question, doesn't this make it possible for people to incapacitate you and just use you key off your key ring to unlock your phone whereas with Face ID you have to be responsive (alive). What is going to stop people stealing you keys if you leave your keys (car/house keys) on your desk and getting into you phone/computer? It doesn't seem more secure to me...
This is new to me, and there was never any explanation or demonstration as to how they actually work and why do I need one???? What has brought this on?
I hope it will be our choice, whether we want it, due to I don't like it because I have a hard time keeping up with my house keys. No, I am not interested. 😡
This was a good article, have some thoughts, if you get a key that is USB A or USB C, can you use an adapter that converts it to lightning to use it on your iPhone. Also, how does the apple device manager in Win 11 play with the key and windows icloud account app.
I appriciate the video demonstrating and showing how to setup, but I'm still not understanding how you use them once they are setup. Purchases through app store don't trigger 2FA do they? The only thing I can think of that triggers 2FA for my apple id, is when I sign into my id on a new device, and I think the last time I needed to do that, it just asked me to hold my existing phone in close proximity to it (I assume because it was using Bluetooth). I suppose logging into apple id on computer would trigger 2FA.. Right? So once the keys are setup in iOS, that still wouldn't protect any of your other accounts besides your Apple ID, right? I'm very interested in using these, I'm just not understanding the whole work flow Another thing for people to keep in mind is that the iPads don't have Nfc scanners, so they will need to pick keys with the right type of connection for their device
My wife has her own designated iPad that was originally mine. Right now, she uses the same sign on for her iPad as I do to sign on to my own iPad. It’s basically like I have two iPads but she uses one and I use the other. 1) Can we share the same security key to sign on to my account from either iPad? 2) If she doesn’t have my key available to her (I’m out running an errand), can she still sign in to my account using the original password? 3) Are these keys only to get into my Apple account or can they be used to unlock the Home Screen or to enter apps like my bank?
You can share keys, yes. Keys aren't a replacement for passwords at this point - you'll still need to know them - but they're a step in that direction. At this point, they're a replacement for the six-digit two-factor authentication codes that you have to enter when you set up a new device. (So you won't be using these keys all that much.) With regard to third-party apps, we'll see how that shakes out.
How confident are you that Apple will release their own physical key at WWDC in June? I’ll hold off on getting Yubikeys if that’s likely. I can see Apple making the product, but I have read no such rumors regarding it.
As far as I know, that's a password manager, which is different than a physical security key. Security keys don't actually store passwords at all or even replace them - they replace the six-digit (or similar) two-factor authentication codes that end up being texted to you after you log in. At this point, they're not actually replacing passwords at all, but they are designed to keep you safer than current methods of two-factor authentication by restricting your logins to a physical location - wherever your key is.
I still dont understand what I do with these keys? how do i use that? do I need it every time to unlock the phone? do I just have to hold it near a phone when I want to log into a website account? how does that key know my password for a specific account like my bank account? I am very confused!
I cannot help but notice the "PlayStation4Pro" on 4:03. What's the meaning of this? AppleTV? Edit: Also my understanding was that Apple Keychain could also work as Passkey, but I never was able to set it up so far. :(
Those yubikey 5ci ones are notorious for exploding on key rings. I have one where all the plastic fell off. You’re definitely better off going USB-C if your apps all support NFC. I’ve had pretty good durability with the USB-A ones from Yubikey; the usb c connectors definitely take less torque than the usb c ones.
Hey Lucretia, Thanks for your comment and question. While blocking people on the same Wi-Fi and router can be done, it's not something we cover in our videos. However, there are plenty of ways to protect your info on your iPhone and iPad. You can turn on two-factor authentication in your settings, which adds an extra layer of security to your device. You can also enable a passcode to prevent unauthorized access. Finally, you can use a VPN to hide your IP address and encrypt your data. Once somebody is in your phone they would have complete access? I am figuring I would end up carrying my key around with my phone, and if my purse got stolen they would have it all?
I am about to buy a new iPhone. I currently have security keys setup for 2FA on current iPhone. Do I need to disable these security keys to setup/transfer data for new iPhone
Can the same two security keys be used to protect two phones ?
I tend to be frugal, so I'm wondering if my wife, and I could share a set.
But … why do we need those in first place / what’s the point actually (did i miss that) - if i use 2FA !?
which one should I buy?
I’m not sure that I understand the implications of the security key. Do I need to use it every time I unlock my phone? Or just using my Apple ID. Sounds obnoxious.
I haven’t setup any security keys yet because i didn’t know about them until you mentioned them in your video I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and I’m going to upgrade to the 15 Pro Max should I wait until apple comes out with a security key? Thank You in Advance
Need compulsory 2 keys? One key not working?
Hi. Enjoyed your informative video. You guys mentioned that I can get up to five security keys. Can I mix and match them? ie. Can I buy one Bio key for everyday uses and other, say NFC, for backups or do they all need to be the same type/model?
“Security keys” not showing on my phone. Is it because it is an iPhone 8? Software is up to date.
I do have a Macbook that won't support security keys on my iCloud account. Am I out of luck, or should I just create a new iCloud account for said Macbook?
Can 2 phones use same security key? So say I only need 2 keys for my and my wife’s phone?
Has anything changed to my face identification on my iPhone 11 or my fingerprint on my iPad? I will not be buying passkeys. I don’t carry ANY keys.
Seems like it makes it easier for someone to break into your iCloud?
I can’t imagine having to do this 25, times a day (I lock my phone when I set it down). Plus, geez, all I need is one more thing to carry and lose.
Thank you.
Does Google's Titan work with Edge and Windows?
What to do if you lose it! No point having this these r my thoughts or opinion on this subject
Exactly my thoughts
Di these replace the recovery key?
NFC tags come in a lot of different styles. Everything from stickers to magnets buttons is really pretty in this what they can do with the NFC technology with that in mind you could take an NFC tag and put it on your desk and that way when you’re sitting at your desk working all day all you have to do is move your phone to the appropriate spot on your desk and it would take an unlock. This could be very helpful, if the security key manufactures adopted some of these other form factors, and I think a great one would be a watch band something you wear already
You might as well just write your password in permanent marker on your desk lol
No idea what the added value is compared to the alphanumeric password I only know and Face ID. After 10 wrong attempts my iphone gets whiped. Do you need to add the key every time you want to open your iphone?
If I still use my IPod does it mean I won’t be able to add music/etc to it?
How close does the security key need to be w/device for daily use (can the key be in purse/pocket)?
The Apple ID password is the easiest one to be changed by a thief who stole your iPhone after he sees your passcode.
Even the 2FA won’t help. So, should the phone no attached to that Apple ID must be from another iPhone?
Any advice?
I have 2 safaris but I wanna know why i have 2 of them the 2nd one is not a shortcut
Reading through Googles Security Key information, I think they suggest one google key and one competitor key. Is it ok to mix and match the 2 keys?
Not a bad video guys. You didn't really sell me on why I would need one (two actually) and related to that is my question, doesn't this make it possible for people to incapacitate you and just use you key off your key ring to unlock your phone whereas with Face ID you have to be responsive (alive). What is going to stop people stealing you keys if you leave your keys (car/house keys) on your desk and getting into you phone/computer? It doesn't seem more secure to me...
It does not open your phone. It protects your accounts like iCloud etc.
@@victorcarmelo8606 right OK
One of my Yubikey’s is asking me for a pin and I am not sure what pin it means ?
Why do we have to buy two?
I’m not sure to install security key. What happens if I loose or damage the key . It’s a very big problem.
This is new to me, and there was never any explanation or demonstration as to how they actually work and why do I need one???? What has brought this on?
Says I can’t add security key till June 18?
Am I to understand correctly that I have to purchase two of these $35 security keys?
I hope it will be our choice, whether we want it, due to I don't like it because I have a hard time keeping up with my house keys. No, I am not interested. 😡
Cryptnox FIDO Card - Fido2 Certified - Security Key for Iphone - NFC communication - Passwordless or 2FA authentication - FIDO2 (CTAP2) & U2F(CTAP1) explain this
Why aren’t any of these covered so the plug in part has less chance of being damaged? I wouldn’t use it on a key ring
This was a good article, have some thoughts, if you get a key that is USB A or USB C, can you use an adapter that converts it to lightning to use it on your iPhone. Also, how does the apple device manager in Win 11 play with the key and windows icloud account app.
What if anyone steals your iphone and security key you have with all your keys? Isn't easier ?
I'm very interested in using these, I'm just not understanding the whole work flow
Another thing for people to keep in mind is that the iPads don't have Nfc scanners, so they will need to pick keys with the right type of connection for their device
(So you won't be using these keys all that much.) With regard to third-party apps, we'll see how that shakes out.
what if your iphone is stolen along with the key?
How confident are you that Apple will release their own physical key at WWDC in June? I’ll hold off on getting Yubikeys if that’s likely. I can see Apple making the product, but I have read no such rumors regarding it.
I would say 0% ;)
@@gregsonberlin3782 hah, yeah. I thought the prediction didn’t hold much water since it wasn’t based on a credible leak or anything.
can you use one key for different accounts? say just one key for my iCloud and the same key for my google account
How about using Security Key from ExpressVPN?
As far as I know, that's a password manager, which is different than a physical security key. Security keys don't actually store passwords at all or even replace them - they replace the six-digit (or similar) two-factor authentication codes that end up being texted to you after you log in. At this point, they're not actually replacing passwords at all, but they are designed to keep you safer than current methods of two-factor authentication by restricting your logins to a physical location - wherever your key is.
ios 16.3 Video in safari and chrome web browser and video records from Web browswers not start and block..?? Problem!
Sooo, Authenticator apps are not comparable?
Can a husband and wife share security keys?
Those yubikey 5ci ones are notorious for exploding on key rings. I have one where all the plastic fell off. You’re definitely better off going USB-C if your apps all support NFC. I’ve had pretty good durability with the USB-A ones from Yubikey; the usb c connectors definitely take less torque than the usb c ones.
Hi, would this work to block people on the same Wi-Fi and router? How can I protect my info on iPhone and iPad? PLEASE HELP
Hey Lucretia,
Thanks for your comment and question.
Hope this helps and keep watching our videos for more tips and tricks for your iPhone and iPad!
Best,
David

They can't be serious ...we're going to be carrying around two USB devices just so we can get into our iPhones?
Can a security key user use different models? For instance, Yubico offers and sells several different models. Is it possible to use different model Yubikeys for the same devices?
Are you aware of any carrier deals to trade in a pixel 7 pro for a galaxy s23 ultra? Thanks!
I have a question,
I updated IOS 15.3.1 on my Iphone 13 to IOS 16.3.1 and App Phone has some problems. In the recent tab, there are some combination Phone number like "Phone number1" & "Phone number2"&"phone number3" on the same row, not seperate one by one on different rows, so do you know how to fix this? That phone number combination is so weird,i can't touch the combination number cause it'll automatically make Facetime with all phone number in the list of combination phone number
What if you lose the keys
Those keys can be stolen or lost too, beside having another thing to worry about.
Not great news for me bc it’ll be another piece to have to carry around. I have a few key chains bc I have 3 autos and I would have to carry all my keychains with the risk of losing one or I’d have to be removing the gadget to put on the key ring for the car I’ll be driving at that moment. Too much trouble for me! I’m already exhausted thinking about it!
I wish there were a gadget that would detect scammers, thieves, etc. near us instead so we could lock them all up! Wishful thinking!
Love this video. I have an iapd with a usb-c port and a iPhone 14pro max with lightning. I guess I would either have to buy yubikey of two keys, one for each port. Correct?
Actually you wouldn’t need any lighting port ones - the iPhone has NFC so it’s wireless, and if the iPad is USB-C, any of the USB-C ones will work.
@@PayetteForward much thanks
@@PayetteForward What if my ancient iPad is Lightning?
Hmmm. Not convinced .. yet. I have an iPhone 14pro max and an older Mac book pro with big sur 11.7.4 only. I’d like a key set that works with both devices not just my iPhone. I’ll wait
There are other Yubikey’s that do not have the lightning connection
I tried looking up those recommended keys like you guys showed, but didn’t give us a chance to really see any names of keys to lock up when I did that. It came up with a little triangle with a ! In middle of it with the word James beside it. So I clicked on it and closed it out. I’m hoping I got rid of it did that mean I was hacked?
What if you have older devices that you like to play with occasionally ? is there one with the old multi pin job ?
Is there any sense in this type of device ?
Not fitting anything not made by Apple in to my iPhone !!
I have installed the Google Titan Security Key on my iPhone 11, but though it’s installed and verified by my phone it doesn’t change anything for my phone still asks for my passcode when restarting. The Apple Store tech chap said because it was a Google product Apple wouldn’t support it.
Comments?
Do you keep saying “upper left hand corner” only to go to the right hand corner 🤷♀️
I may have missed this, but why the need for 2 security keys?
Because Apple says so.
What a physical key?
Hi bros I’m from India recently I took iPhone se 3rd tell me all settings features on and off I’m waiting for your reply thanks in advance one by one step based
I need clarification. I make payments on my mac but use my phone for the security number, does a security key work like this? My Mac is OS12 and not 13.
Nope - a security key is a replacement for the phone two-step verification codes.
So enter your passcode and security key and the phone is open...while open a person has watched you enter your code and stolen the phone. The thief goes in and removes the use of the security key function. Question: does it ask for your security key again before you can remove the security key function? if not, it's useless.
