@lofihour2506 Yeah. Because my name is Brandon, I decided to look up the meaning of the name. I couldn't believe it. I can't help but wonder if Brandon Lee knew that. Incidentally, my middle name is actually Lee. Completely by coincidence. I was named after my aunt.
Rest in Peace, Brandon Lee. 🕊🖤 We lost him far too early, and in one of the Behind the Scenes features, he talks about his character's resurrection, and how we should all live our lives to the fullest, because death could strike at any moment.
This quote by Brandon Lee, from the behind the scenes feature that was on the VHS before the movie, always stayed with me. "How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood that is so deeply apart of your being you can’t even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps 4 or 5 times more? Perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. & yet it all seems limitless." This movie will always have a special place in my heart for many reasons.
@@Jonathan_Collins absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful quote from the Novel the sheltering sky by Paul Bowles which Brandon mentions in the full interview. Life is short and precious!
No to mention how it essentially kick-started the 90's Goth cinema trend (see: How The Crow (1994) Changed the Movie Industry Forever" by Life of Slice). 🖤
I always felt the "Sarahs mum" arc in this was really understated. In all the death and carnage he put a family back together. The breakfast scene was lovely.
I absolutely love the scenes with Brandon Lee and Ernie Hudson in this movie. They always come down to two decent characters/men just talking to each other.
Dude Me and my Wife just watched this for the first time because you're always bringing it up. I finally said fuck it and bought it in 4k knowing nothing other then you recommended it. It was the most 90s edgy movie ever! loved it!
Of course it does. It's one of the best revenge movies ever done. Gothic af, Legendary performance from Brandon Lee, memorable villains and a kick ass soundtrack.
It’s interesting you bring up the Joker comparison. Both Brandon & Heath died giving the best final performance of their careers. May they both rest in peace. We will forever treasure what you left us with ❤️.
The line "Mother is the name of GOD for a child" hits harder than the entire The Crow remake. That movie was just intense in so many ways. It really showed how pure Eric's soul was because he was brought back as this THING of pure vengeance and yet he couldn't help helping the people he cared about in life. It shows that no matter how dark, the light and love of a good soul will force its way to the surface.
Cool thing is that that line was from the comic. O’Barr himself had that much heart to him, even when feeling like sh*t, that he thought to have Eric say that as a character having empathy, seeing essentially a child’s god having fallen so low as to shack up with funboy sharing needles.
Nah it’s literally a quote from William Tackery in the 1800’s. All these “cool” quotes that people attribute to making the original better than the reboot are all ripped from different authors.
Fun fact: the stunt double they used to shoot the scenes with Eric returning to the appartment, where his face is obscured by shadows, that's Chad Stahelski. You may know him as one the creators of the John Wick franchise. He and Brandon Lee were friends, trained together martial arts under grand master Dan Inosanto ( student & close friend of Bruce Lee).
The Crow and Dark City cemented Alex Proyas as one of the most underrated directors of the 90’s. The dude has a serious eye for beautifully dark visuals.
I went back and watched The Crow after hearing how bad the 2024 remake was. It 100% holds up, but what stuck with me was this line: "Little things used to mean so much to Shelly. I used to think they were kind of... trivial. Believe me, nothing is trivial." That line hits me really differently now that I am older and married. Jeremy is completely right that the amount of humanity in this movie is surprising.
Rest in peace Brandon Bruce Lee. My favorite movie of all time. A true masterpiece. When I lived in Seattle I would often pay my respects to Brandon and Bruce at lakeview cemetery next to volunteer park. Buildings burn , people die but real love is forever.
Showed it to my oldest son about a month ago and was relieved at how well it has held up and it wasn't just nostalgia. He loved it, as have I for all these years. RIP Brandon!
My gf was interested in seeing the Crow reboot after seeing the trailer some months ago but had never seen the original. While she didn't like the reboot, she did appreciate some of the aspects of it. I told her we should watch the OG because its much, much better. She didn't really care for that either. Lol. Her biggest issues was that it felt like things happened too fast and things weren't explained enough. I keep trying to tell her, that's what makes it so good!
I love the choices they made to establish Eric & Shelley’s relationship through flashbacks and how the city doesn’t look fake. The music, the city is great at setting the atmosphere of the movie. The villians are villians and not misunderstood. There are so many classic lines in this movie. Great actors too.
Regarding the villains, if you started the modern trope of trying to present the "villain" as a misunderstood victim, Top Dollar would be disgusted and he would not tolerate it. Top Dollar knew what he was doing and why he was doing it.
That soundtrack though...my favorite Cure Song (Burn), one of the best NIN songs (Dead Souls), one of STP's best songs (Big Empty), a very underrated Rage song (Darkness), a personal favorite Pantera song (The Badge). It's stacked to the brim with the best 90's alternative and metal of that time. Still listen to it on the regular.
Also props to the amazing score by Graeme Revell, which is just as spectacular but super underrated compared to the soundtrack which is obviously legendary. He also did the saint with Val Kilmer which I love as well. Rest in peace Brandon Lee!
Thursday, October 31st. The city streets are crowded for the holiday. Even with the rain. Hidden in the chaos is the element, waiting to strike like snakes. And I'm there too. Watching. 2 years of nights have turned me into a nocturnal animal. I must choose my targets carefully. It's a big city. I can't be everywhere. Is perfect for tomorrow.

I was working at a UA movie theater in Dallas that summer. I must’ve seen The Crow at least fifty times. Every time I had a break, I’d go in and watch some of it. Here’s to Devil’s Night, my new favorite holiday. And never forget, it can’t rain all the time.

I've thought about this for years. A more faithful adaptation of The Crow isn't possible. In the comic, Eric is an unstoppable force. That doesn't work in a movie. The 1994 movie is the best we will ever get. Totally agree, this movie remains awesome.
It's also very sad that he felt somewhat responsible for Brandon Lee's death because that's not even remotely on him. That just kind of seemed to compound his survivor's guilt.

You know what really still gets me every time I rewatch this movie? It's that Eric Draven is a really good, decent and kind person, even after becoming the crow. The way he talks to people, the way he interacts with kids, he doesn't become some dark angel of vengeance that goes on a killing spree exactly. He still has so much hard, and the way Brandon Lee plays those scenes interacting with other people still makes me smile. He's the kind of characters that you cheer when he takes out the bad guys, but you love just as much seeing him have a moment to be around decent people where he can let his guard down a bit.
There are several scenes from The Crow that are so memorable. Some scenes are like a music video, when he puts his face paint on and The Cure’s music comes on…gives me goosebumps every time.

Even on the occasion when I don't completely agree, you always explain it in a way that I can understand where you are coming from. Don't ever change or conform. Also, I just re-watched the Crow a few weeks ago and yeah, it still kicks ass.
As a kid, the story of what happened to Brandon Lee and the movie was a huge topic among my peers. The one day I finally rented it VHS, I remember being blown away with the emotional depth the movie brought to the comic book movie genre. The performance Brandon Lee put on inspired countless others and 30 years later and still remains my favorite movie.
watching the 1994 version of The Crow for the first time and it's incredible how well it holds up! The blend of haunting visuals and emotional depth still resonates today. Brandon Lee's performance is unforgettable-he truly brought Eric Draven to life. The themes of love, loss, and vengeance are timeless. It's a classic.
This movie and soundtrack have a special place in my heart. I met a young woman back when this was released and feel deeply in love with her. Though we are no longer together, whenever I watch "The Crow" and listen to the soundtrack, I wonder how she is doing and what her life it like now. I will grow old watching and listening to this timeless classic.
I recently bought that special edition of the comic. Before i'd even started reading the story, the intro/preface by James O'Barr himself brough me to tears. I'm gonna watch it again tonight.
What I love about Eric's character is that as tragic as he is, as tormented by pain from the past and present, he still hasn't lost the capacity to love. Not just to the memory of his lost love, but to others around him. He's terrifying to his enemies yet you can see his old self shine when with those who have good in their hearts.
Dude, every year for at least a decade, I rewatch this movie either on October 30th or October 31st. No matter how many times I watch it, I still have a blast. As soon as it gets to October 1st, the countdown begins for me. This tradition will continue for me until I die.
Of course the OG Crow film still holds up. Its a true cult classic. I've watched that movie countless times & never once get bored of it. The performances, writing, atmosphere, action sequences, music, directing, etc are all perfect. RIP Brandon Lee & Michael Massee (Funboy)🙏
Absolutely it does, watched it til my VHS copy wore out. Sniffled my way through the heartbreaking flashbacks, cheered derisively at the villains' offings, reflected during the interlude moments (Eric's guitar playing on the roof? Magic), & totally fulfilled by the ending. Totally agree with you Jeremy- an absolute classic.🏆
I have no idea how many times I've seen The Crow. It has been a few years now, so I should probably rewatch it soon. Fantastic movie and one of my all time favourites.
Nailed it as usual sir. One of my favorite movies to watch when I was a teenager, and one of the best adaptations of a comic book I've ever seen. Timeless film.
The apartment scene with Eric and albrect is one of the best scenes in the movie. Everything about it is great. It was amazing acting between Ernie and Brandon. Ernie playing the cop being compassionate but had to be professional. Brandon playing the hero but also hanging on to being human. “ I thought I’d use your front door” another incredible line.

Wild that I just watched it for the first time 2 days ago, looked up reviews yesterday, and yours pops up today!
watching the 1994 version of The Crow for the first time and it's incredible how well it holds up! The blend of haunting visuals and emotional depth still resonates today. Brandon Lee's performance is unforgettable-he truly brought Eric Draven to life. The themes of love, loss, and vengeance are timeless. It's a classic.
I watch this every year the day before Halloween. I love it.
The Crow and The Fifth Element are my top two movies, I quote them almost daily.
Recently introduced this to my 17 yr old and he loved it so I'll say it holds up.
Answer to the question is 100% yes. And I still cry watching it. And I’m not ashamed to admit that.
Holds up so much, i cant face watching the new one
I recently bought that special edition of the comic. Before i'd even started reading the story, the intro/preface by James O'Barr himself brough me to tears.
I'm gonna watch it again tonight.
I totally agree!! A true classic!! I rewatched a couple of weeks ago & was still mesmerized by Brandon Lee's performance!!❤❤❤
So many good one liners that I still remember today. "It can't rain all the time" "There ain't no comin back!"
It holds up MAGNIFICENTLY well, yes 🖤
Its always a pleasure to watch and hear what you say Bro. Been a fan for years dude. Cheers from Sabah, Malaysia
Weird as this may sound… Top Dollar in this movie is why Michael Wincott is my headcanon voice for Ganondorf in Legend of Zelda.
For every Halloween I pick a special film to watch and this original The Crow film is this year's pick 👑
I absolutely love when you review a movie that you thoroughly enjoy. Just your entire demeanor is different.
What I love about Eric's character is that as tragic as he is, as tormented by pain from the past and present, he still hasn't lost the capacity to love. Not just to the memory of his lost love, but to others around him. He's terrifying to his enemies yet you can see his old self shine when with those who have good in their hearts.
Great review of an all time great. I was a huuuuge Brandon Lee fan. Well done as always Jeremy.
Yes. Fucking yes. Brandon Lee died for our entertainment. God rest his soul. This movie rocks.
