OMG you bring back memories. I have been making these since I was 18 yrs old 1971.😂. I make rum and bourbon balls for Christmas as gifts with an assortment of other homemade cookies.
@@nancylindsay4255 Don't forget...according to the Bible, Jesus' first miracle was turning a barrell of water into wine. Had they known about rum the story might have been far different. 🤣
Every café, bakery, convenience store and gas station in Sweden have these. We use whatever type of cake scraps and leftover biscuits. Here they are rolled in chocolate sprinkles. We also use the same mixture to form into logs and role in marzipan. Then the both ends are dipped in melted chocolate. They are called "Vacuum cleaner" due to the fact that they are made with crumbs and scraps. I also think that they are called that du to how the electric vacuum cleaners looked when they started to appear in every household. What you call an ice box cake, we in Sweden call Radio cake, due to how that, when cut into, it resembles a radio. At least in 1920 :)
I am a Dane and I am sometimes making rum balls, but I make them with whatever cake leftovers I have in the freezer (I bake a lot), a little jam (the glue and sweetener), rum, a bit of shredded coconut (to make them chewy), vanilla and finish them off with a layer of melted dark chocolate. I do not measure anything, just take what I have. That is the fun part. But they are good every time!
I worked at a mall in the 80’s and there was a bakery upstairs that had rum balls (no alcohol I’m sure) that I had to get every morning with my coffee. Soooooo good!
When I was on my first submarine in the late 70"s, we were deployed and underway over Christmas. One of my shipmates, Chuck, had told us that his wife had made something special for him to be opened only on Christmas day. That day rolled around, Chuck opened the container and we were almost overcome by the rum spell. His wife had made a batch of the most potent rum balls ever. Being responsible, mature nuclear power plant operators, we each, all of M-Div, only had one (to be honest, they were pretty big and she sent a lot), took the rest of them to the Chief's Mess and Wardroom. CO was mighty impressed with their potency.
When I Graduated from High School, in a Coal Mining Town in West Virginia, I got a job In Washington DC, a coworker brought Rum Balls to the Office during the Christmas Holidays and I actually got a buzz on them. Damn, they were goooood!! They were super potent.
I used to make this same recipe for my dad when he was alive. He loved them and looked forward to them every Christmas. I must admit, I sampled a few before giving them away. 😅
I love them made with cocoa powder instead of the rum! Thank you for the video. Amazing memories, these were a party favourite in childhood, especially at Christmas when there would be a huge tupperware container of them in the fridge!
AHHHH I'm so making these!!! This is a far cry from mixing a can of chocolate frosting in with crushed graham crackers and rum extract, rolled in powdered sugar. That had been the stand-by recipe when I was a kid. Making your recipe this year! THANK YOU!!!
I just made your ding dong cake for my daughter’s birthday. It is wonderful ! Can’t wait to make these for Christmas. Thanks for all the baking tips, and yummy recipes.
I was gifted rum balls in a Christmas mug. Oh my those rum bars were amazing. My friend dipped them in chocolate. It was very hard to stop at one. Thank you for sharing your recipe and video.
Thanks for sharing this REALLY yummy recipe. I made them and threw them into nice boxes and gave out as holiday gifts for the office. Everyone loves it!!!❤️❤️❤️
First time I had rum balls was when I was in the Army and one of the married guys brought them to the Co. 🎄 Party. I was floored since my grandmother baked cookies every year.
5 million John! Wow!……4, 999,999 people love you as much as I do…. Congratulations to you and Merry Christmas to you, Brian and your boys…. Thanks for being the best teacher x❤x
My mom God bless her always made balls with chocolate, rum, coniac, and so many different flavors. Thank you so much. ΝΑ είστε πάντα καλά με όλη μου την αγάπη Έλα α από Ελλάδα ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤💐💐💐💐💐🥰🥰🥰🇬🇷🇬🇷
OMG.... AMAZING!! Thank you!! Nice little tip, put a little 10x or a combination of 10x and cocoa powder in the middle of your palm lightly, then roll, and they seem to hold better..
I use walnuts. Their softer texture feel better and absorb more. I use the Special dark cocoa. I used the rum I drained from soaking the fruits for my Stollen recipe. The rum had absorbed the flavors of the candied citrus and ginger and the sweetness of the raisins. Made my rum balls awesome. Going to try the same method with bourbon next year. I dropped my scooped dough into confectioners sugar, rolled them around in the bowl and then rolled them in my hand. No sticking.
Those rum cakes look so yummy 😋. Thank you for sharing the recipe 👏👏. There was a lady in the office that went on vacation to the US Virgin Islands and brought a small box of rum balls, they were so delicious 😋.
Thanks for this delicious Christmas treat! Would love to watch a Christmas pudding recipe as well. I've checked your website and it looks absolutely delicious.
Most bakeries here in Germany have them. They're my favorite! We usually make them bigger and use *chocolate sprinkles* on the outside. Also, instead of wafers/cookies we use *cake scraps or pound cake.* Some people also add *butter, honey or chocolate.* Yum!😋😍
As an Australian seeing the classic rendition in American form is fascinating. Ours has coconut and Bundy rum with this sort of milk biscuit crushed up with cocoa. Should look up a recipe and give it a go! Its delicious 🥹
Definitely better after they sit for a few weeks in a tightly closed tin. I used to make rum balls and pfefferneusse in late October to be ready for the holidays.
You are my favorite chef! You explain everything sooooo good! I am only ten years old but I am very talented in baking and cooking so I follow your recipes and they work out sooo good😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 my name is ivy am I am from Canada Ontario 😊
I was just thinking about Granny's rum ball recipe, every 🎄🎁 Thank you for sharing & for adding the non alcohol version but granny used whiskey too sometimes!
I am from Denmark 🇩🇰. I promise you. They are not the same. Still good. You just can't beat day old pastry for gumballs. All the flavor is in the kringle
So great to see this recipe get wide spread. These are great cookies, although I've always known them as Bourbon Balls, obviously with Bourbon instead of Rum.

LOL Since the moment you could legally get at the rum!

I love the Charlie Brown holiday music in the background!
As a Brit, I have never heard of this before, but you have given me an idea on how to use up my bottle of dark rum with rich tea biscuits
British innovation on display. Waste not, want not! Cheers
As a Brit, you have never heard of these rum balls?
They are sold all over Europe during Christmas.

I didn't know I needed John with the Christmas apron in my life, until now

What dark rum is best?
@@melissab5634 I just used Bacardi rum.
I love this recipe and the music. Please don't be offended but it was like watching a comforting, remake of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.
Aww, it kind of is! Both are kind, calm, and uplifting. ❤❤
I can’t see anyone being offended at that. That’s really sweet
It's a wonderfull day in the neighborhood when Mr Rogers makes rum balls, and still has half a bottle good rum left over
❤I used honey instead of corn syrup and added more rum - what a pain to roll, but excited to bring them out of the freezer for Christmas 😊
I love them made with cocoa powder instead of the rum! Thank you for the video. Amazing memories, these were a party favourite in childhood, especially at Christmas when there would be a huge tupperware container of them in the fridge!
My sister and I made these for Christmas last Saturday, with port wine in stead of rum (yum).

Toasting nuts and coffee beans, actually will help if they are stale also. Learned that at a coffee plantation.
