    I have had this kit in my stash for years because I always light my builds and I always felt I wouldn't be able to do this one justice. Also I have never really liked using aztec decals because they don't look right to me. But having watched this build series I now think I can have a go at it. Both the window scraping technique and the quality of these decals have sold me on it. Thanks Boyd!

  • @Astronomy_Live
    @Astronomy_Live 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, what a beautiful job! I'm working on a 1:1400 D model that was one of the old fiber optic kits. I've been drilling and applying canopy glue to create the windows rather than using the original fiber optics, but of course it's not nearly as clean as the scraping method and definitely could not create the smaller windows shown here. If I ever do one of these again in the future, I'm definitely going to use the scraping method with a clear model.

    • @danharris5999
      @danharris5999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I am just starting to fill my 1/1400 E with Micro Krystal Clear, and they are not as clean as the scraped windows on Boyd's kit. Have a clear Enterprise D that will work with the scraping technique. Just light blocked a bit differently.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I built the clear D a few years ago and the scraped windows looked good on it as well. The plastic on that kit was very brittle though. Molded in white is just fine. I am already working on the new Voyager kit and will use the same method again.

    A very inspirational series of videos, thanks for sharing your experience with us!
    I have some questions:
    1: did you paint the PE grills under the blue nacelle part or did you glue them in naked and which glue did you use for that?
    2: did I understand correctly that you used transparent blue on the upper nacelle part from the outside and flat white from the inside? If so, did you cover the blue layer of paint on the outside with some clear laquer?
    Thanks in advance, your videos are truly helpful and a valuable resource!

    just to let you know, Boyd; the Moebius 1/4105 scale Battlestar Galactica model can have aftermarket decals for the aztecing... and it looks to be a nightmare! I saw someone having done all those decals, and they said it was a pain in the butt! I'm currently building my own model of the Galactica and I did consider (briefly) using them. Instead, I am doing my own aztecing by painting by hand, a pain in the butt itself, but more fun for me (and I'm modifying my model to be the Blood and Chrome version with full armor plating and twice the guns!).

    • @TrekWorks

    Great work Boyd! You didn't mention it that I recall, but did you notice the missing row of windows on the port side of the primary hull, above the nav beacon between the two banks of lifeboat pods? AMT/Round2 missed it when they molded the kit. They're on the filming model. Maybe they'll ad them if they re-pop this kit? Nah, probably not. 😁

    Hi Boyd, the scraped, gloomy windows look awsome. I am looking for a greyish color to cover the bussards and impulse engines and the nacells to make em look more realistic when unlit in daylight. I would like the ships to look completely unpowerd in daylight but in darkness I seek the typical lit up in space look. I will sand the clear parts but do you have a tip for the greyish colortoning? I think it has to be on the outer surface.
    Regards

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to use an airbrush to spray it on so it can be fine enough to cover but not look splattered when it's lighted. I would choose a color you like in a water based paint and try it.
      If it doesn't look good you can just wipe it back off with water and not ruin the lens.

    It looks better with the scraped as opposed to drilled out windows BUT either way you're talking tedious work to prepare it for lighting! LOL
    It still looks wrong without the neck, though. I know the justification for this but it still looks squashed... Clearly inspired by the TMP Enterprise.
    This is when they started to try to turn TNG into TOS and that may be part of why that film series was shorter than the TOS cast movies. Picard's not Kirk. Never understood the reasoning for destroying the Enterprise-D in the film Generations. That was their Enterprise...
