I’ve always thought having a high gamer score was cool. But I’ve also valued the achievements themselves more than the gamer score the achievements brought. I would often look through my friends or just random peoples achievements just to see which achievements they had in certain games. I still do it to this day just because it’s cool to see what other people have achieved in certain games. I think basing the value of achievements solely on gamer score is silly.
The reward for collecting all the feathers in AC2 is seeing Ezio's mom recover from her catatonic state, the cape is secondary as are the 2 achievements tied to the process, (one for finding all the feathers and one for wearing the new cape in every city), you also get a hammer at the halfway point but nobody cares about that as it's easily outclassed by Altair's sword which is easier and more fun to get anyway. I don't care what anyone else says, that tiny cutscene made the whole thing worth it alone! A far far better example of awful collectibles are the flags from AC1, there are HUNDREDS of them, that's PLURAL HUNDREDS as opposed to the flat single hundred feathers in 2, and you get literally nothing in game for finding all of them but a large chunk of the achievements are tied to collecting the damned things, as a completionist I've done some truly insane, difficult, tedious and awful things to get 100% completion and those freaking flags hold the dubious distinction of being one of the only tasks so awful as to actually break me! Scouring the Kingdom checking off each one using a guide only to be short 1 freaking flag at the end in the biggest and most PITA map to traverse in the entire game, NO just no!
I did the same achievements and although it was time consuming it wasn’t that bad for me cause the guide I used had the flags numbered so it was pretty easy to keep track of which flags I collected. You should’ve looked for a better guide homie…
@@zigsteenine8650 It's not that the guide was bad it's that I already collected a decent chunk just playing normally and didn't remember which ones I had and which I didn't when starting, which made it hard to tell whether I was in the wrong spot or if I got it already, especially with how samey everything looks. It's also possible it just bugged out. If it was just the flags in the cities I wouldn't mind so much but the damned Kingdom overworld area is just hell to traverse: guards insta aggroing making stealth impossible and wasting time by forcing me off my horse and into an easy yet tedious fight, uneven terrain forcing constant detours, massive amounts of empty space with nothing going on, no fast travel and even horseback is slow AF! I have done some tedious crap in games but that one honestly takes the cake, because at least with the other BS I can autopilot it with a podcast on or something I can't do that when I have to constantly cross reference with a guide and map. Data entry is more fun and that's no exagerration.
I respect the hell out of people who have the Hollow Knight achievements. There are still games where achievements matter you just have to find them now.
@@Enoo_ agreed, playstation's trophy system has always felt better, bronze silver and gold trophies always made more sense to me than gamerscore & getting some of those gold trophies is way more satisfying than getting a rare achievement imo
I usually make fun of all the babies that cry about how achievements and trophies have no value now. However this baby actually made a video about it, so I'm kind of impressed. That said, they never had any value to begin with.
Just stumbled upon this video and i gotta say, I LOVE your style of presenting and the transitions between the scenes. That's very unique and I have not seen this else where.
The Assassin's Creed 2, the100 Feather Cape was the stupidest reward: It made Ezio 100% Notorious. AKA, you become the most wanted. All the guards in the game will hunt you down.
One thing I was dissapointed about is how they changed the main achievement view to percentages, as it essentially penalises you for not having DLC. But I certainly would not be surprised if this was done intentially.
I'm finding myself not wanting to play games because they don't have achievements and it's making me question a lot of my decisions around games. I need to get over my addiction with achievements and just find games that are fun to play. I used to compare and race with friends, but I got busy and stopped playing online games altogether and haven't been in a party in a long time. I really miss the days of playing Halo or Call of Duty after school, on the weekends, and getting psyched for school breaks to just play games as long as I wanted to. Everything was new and interesting and fun. I've played so many games that everything just feels like a copy, and usually the story isn't good enough to keep me invested, so I turned to achievements to keep me invested and playing. When I think about what I want to play without achievements, I generally don't want to play anything
Medical community doesn't like talking about it but covid is the first respiratory disease in history that smoking actually makes you less likely to have a severe reaction. Nicotine reduce ACE2 in the lungs that covid attacks. There were a few news articles early in the pandemic but now you'd have to use duckduckgo to find them
Prey 2017 had achievements that made me only use human powers, typhoon powers and no powers at all, I was able to fully see the benefits and downsides of each skill tree, what worked, how to tackle situations better, and how to to efficiently use resources, especially on no powers run. Dishonored 2 did the same, no powers, low and high chaos runs make you play different and see the games angles, it made me replay the games from different perspectives on situations for the gameplay. These were great achievements to get, fun, encouraging, all different and made me enjoy and like the games more in fact. This might not be for everyone, but I had more fun with the games on that regard.
I actually did the crackdown orbs thing two days ago, agility and hidden ones, took me about 7 hours following a video guide and a map... By the end i asked myself, why tho?
I remember getting 199 pigeons in GTA4 and never could find that last one. I would even hear the cooing of those damn birds in my sleep. That was about the time that I threw in the towel for cheevos.
I used to have achievements duel with friends when I was younger. This involved me and some friends starting up a new game, of which we had 1 week to see who got the highest pt in the game. This duel ended around 2012, when time and money were in short supply. When it comes to achiments as a whole, it was a long time ago that I thought achiments gave an extra layer of depth to the game. Such as finding all the fun stuff in borderlands, or getting the really powerful weapon in dead space 2.
I still come back to this video. The cold open asking out some employee at marshall's, the sponsor read at the mcdonald's drivethrough, and a great piece on the problems with gamerscore. Just a great video, and every one since has been on the same caliber.
The AA caliber, because you can double jump by pressing the A button twice! Don't forget that Renn!
I love battling with my family and friends to get the most gamerscores of each month. But I agree with your statements. Collecting all files in a playthrough is fine as it encourages you to look around each room more carefully. But it can get ridiculous like getting all blast shards for infamous
I only go for achievements now out of: -I’m really invested in the game -the achievements offer really cool artwork for the game so I can use them as my background -simply out of boredom I have no idea what the gamer score is for now, other than a pissing contest.
I remember growing up i always hated when games made achievements that required difficulty or online multiplayer and devs did not really understand the point of achievements/trophies because the concept of them are excellent. It's not surprising that with the PS4 and Xbox One era most people stopped caring about them. However, i do like the surge of youtubers who go back and try to get hard achievements their content and streams feel very nostalgic for a time when we were all young and trying to get them ourselves.
Only collectibles I ever finished with a smile are the Arkham Riddler trophies. Mini puzzles are always a fun thing for me. I think I am a minority on this one.
I actually really enjoy mindless collecting. I collected every collectible in gta online with my friend with me and he hated it but I really enjoyed it, one of my favorite parts of the game. It’s just satisfying to me like “oh there it is” idk I just don’t get tired of it I do it in every game. I think of it like a separate experience from the main game where you just explore to map the developers made and maybe see some new things.
I got 900 gamer score on the game brothers in arms hells highway. The last achievement was to “play the game on the anniversary of market garden” AKA 1 whole year away from when I was playing. Talk about soul shattering for a small child.
My brain cringed when he walked down the stairs with the Xbox so casually in hand. Bruh, I hold consoles securely and still almost feel crippling anxiety.
Halo ODSTS audio logs are actually a brilliant example of how to do collectables in a game world Collecting the logs has an entire seperate storyline that changes one of the final missions of the game, it unlocks different armories in the game world and makes you explore mombasa streets in places you had never seen before. They usually take you to pretty cool locations and you can actually find the logs without guides by following the city attendant which will point signs and trafic lights to guide you to them Sad you used footage of ODST as a negative example :c Getting the logs in legendary is a really unique and fun way of playing odst and gave me a whole new reason to replay the game years later
14:10 I feel that the message at the end was pretty good and I do feel some truth in it, all though I don’t play most of the games I do solely for the achievements I have gone out of my way and replayed many games in many different ways to get every last achievement like within the resident evil games. Although they have lost meaning they are still something fun to do and add a little extra gameplay to the game even if they do feel like a chore, whether it’s beating the game on impossible difficulty or finding 100 gold coins around the open world map achievements in video games will always be a fun and free extra for anyone that wants to do it whether it’s for bragging rights or to 100% your favorite game.
Achievements, gamer score are way better than trophies. I feel like they're easier to keep track of so by the end of the month me and my friends can see who got the most. We even had a championship belt made so it can change hands each month. I do agree though that achievements and trophies make games feel like work which is the exact opposite how you should feel while playing. Great video!! That's legit the first sponsored by segment within a video I've ever sat thru, Nord VPN should pay you double for that one.
The best thing about achievement score is it's just a vague number, so if you dont get the full 1k in a game, it doesnt matter as much to me vs lacking the platinum trophy for a game.
Going after collectibles in games or hunting rare achievements in general will likely consist of a low attainment percentage. The "achievement" in it all is being able to join that small percentage. That's also where a sense of accomplishment would come in, as well. Since you have over 500K GS, chances are that you've felt this yourself.
It's definitely awkward to do a lot of the things he did - but I feel it would be even more awkward to be the one recording it all because you're along for the wild ride.
This is why achievement hunters make me cringe. It's just a pointless grind doing things you don't even want to or enjoy. So it just is another way to get in your pockets.
Any thoughts on trophies on PlayStation? I'd kind of agree with you that even trophies aren't as special anymore but are still fun to collect. It's always satisfying getting the platinum for a game.
They make them straight forward and worth getting. On Xbox they want you to get every nook and cranny Acheivemenrs just for 5G or 10Gs. It's pointless and feels like a chore.
Let's take R&C for Playstation. It only has 47 Trophies. GoW only has 37 Trophies. Spiderman miles Morales only has 50. Every one of these Trophies is worth completing.
I remember that in Crackdown i had 499 orbs for years. I went back one day some years ago to see if i could find that last orb for a laugh. It turns out it was on one of the big yellow cranes at the docks. he is correct about developers not really careing much about achievements thats why some of the older Xbox 360 games have strange amounts of gamescore and not the normal 1000 that you see now a days. A lord of The Rings RTS game for example only had 750 gamerscore total if i recall.
I think it was halo 3 or maybe reach. There an achievement that you get 1 gs for it. Just 1. For years I’ve been stuck with a 6 or 1 for my total end score. I’ve never had just a general whole number or rounded I should say.
@@nathannorth4925 If you played a lot of easy games for gamescore those types of games would sometimes have a fair few odd achievement numbers. The game called Bullet Witch has 2 achievements. Beat the game on hell setting for 1 point and player for 15 hours plus for 99. Seems back then that perhaps some developers wanted to add odd and even numbers to be a bit different but still equal 1000 gamerscore.
Maybe i'm too old. I come from an age where you played a game to have fun, not to get a pat in the head I never cared for achievements or scores when they were introduced, and still i don't I see them as a reflect of the way you play (e.g "hey, i've killed 78 enemies with the flametrower!") But i'll never orient my steps to pursue any (e.g "I HAVE to get those 5000 enemies killed by flamethrower or i won't be able to sleep at nights!) I once had a friend, we played a zombi game together and had fun, but at a certain point, she started to try to get all the achievements in the game, and then our sessions became boring A.F You would tell me that she was having a good time, but she herself told me that it was boring. So, what's the point? To others can check that you have had a boring time? Yeeey great. No thanks If the game is fun, i'll keep playing it, and at a certain point i'll check the achievments as a curiosity. But i'll keep playing the game my way
For 10 years I played for achievements with a few exceptions of multiplayer games I enjoyed. I used to enjoy getting them but same as everyone collectables became repetitive, some was borderline lengthy to get! Even some multiplayer achievements was so annoying to get, that skill wasn’t the case as it’s mostly based on luck on certain games or extremely lengthy grinds. My most useless achievement I have is from CoD WaW and that’s the hit prestige 10 on multiplayer. I grinned for months for that achievement and tbh I loved CoD WaW so it was worth it for me, but completely worthless to get as it was 0 gamerscore. Although now I only get achievements for games I actually enjoy, gave up playing games I don’t enjoy like I did in the past.
Was it though? Or were you just much younger and had less to worry about? Cause I can say the same thing as you yet I guarantee I’m quite a bit younger.

😂😂😂 did you find it in the end?
Bruh you're serious :/

At this point Renn is just making as many shots in the outdoors just to flex on other countries.
Its good to see him getting some sun
During the VPN segment the cameraman is just holding up a board with "smile and we'll tip you"
I respect the hell out of people who have the Hollow Knight achievements. There are still games where achievements matter you just have to find them now.
Thanks! I actually got the platinum legitimately a few months back, super hard to do the pantheon. It took me a week of practicing every boss.
@@ronthorn3Sonys trophy system is so much better, having the platinum pop feels so good. I say this as a owner of both new consoles.

I love when Renn goes out in public.
With virus and all I actually worry about him a bit. Hope he won't catch it one of these days.

some of the stuff he says to other people in this video is sooo awkward lol

Renns editing really do be in another stratosphere. It was such a pleasure chatting to you on the podcast - thank you so much for including it here!!!

And you'd kill them all cause Ezio is badass
Good.
One thing I was dissapointed about is how they changed the main achievement view to percentages, as it essentially penalises you for not having DLC. But I certainly would not be surprised if this was done intentially.
It should show percentage us who go for the rarest like to see that, just ignore it if you don't like it
I'm finding myself not wanting to play games because they don't have achievements and it's making me question a lot of my decisions around games.
Renn, im seeing these ciggies more and more, I'm getting scared

That Nord VPN advert actually hurt to watch but I love it 😂

Tell me about it. Fuking FH4 has 178 Achievements.

God, Renn rocks that grey hair so well.
That has so far been the only sponsor I've actively enjoyed that fit with the tone of the video.

Renn took advertising to a whole new level
I only go for achievements now out of:
-I’m really invested in the game
-the achievements offer really cool artwork for the game so I can use them as my background
-simply out of boredom
I have no idea what the gamer score is for now, other than a pissing contest.
I like it when the achievements come steadily to help you through the story line.
love your style of vids , editing, style of humor, and choice of background music. cant believe i just discovered the channel.
I remember growing up i always hated when games made achievements that required difficulty or online multiplayer and devs did not really understand the point of achievements/trophies because the concept of them are excellent. It's not surprising that with the PS4 and Xbox One era most people stopped caring about them. However, i do like the surge of youtubers who go back and try to get hard achievements their content and streams feel very nostalgic for a time when we were all young and trying to get them ourselves.
that poor employees who had to sit through your ad :'D

Only collectibles I ever finished with a smile are the Arkham Riddler trophies. Mini puzzles are always a fun thing for me.
I think I am a minority on this one.
How he sponsors his sponsors is actually creative, unlike getting told by some annoying youtuber who just shoves it down your throat, You got a sub.

It’s worse when you miss one and then have to backtrack to where you may have missed it
I got 900 gamer score on the game brothers in arms hells highway. The last achievement was to “play the game on the anniversary of market garden” AKA 1 whole year away from when I was playing. Talk about soul shattering for a small child.

Renn smoking through his nose is the manliest thing I’ve ever seen.
Halo ODSTS audio logs are actually a brilliant example of how to do collectables in a game world
Collecting the logs has an entire seperate storyline that changes one of the final missions of the game, it unlocks different armories in the game world and makes you explore mombasa streets in places you had never seen before. They usually take you to pretty cool locations and you can actually find the logs without guides by following the city attendant which will point signs and trafic lights to guide you to them
Sad you used footage of ODST as a negative example :c
Getting the logs in legendary is a really unique and fun way of playing odst and gave me a whole new reason to replay the game years later
Can’t remember the achievement but one gave you odst armour for avatar that was cool
The fact that he’s wearing a PS4 shirt throughout the video makes it 10 times better
this deserves way more than 100k views for how awkward it is 😭
14:10 I feel that the message at the end was pretty good and I do feel some truth in it, all though I don’t play most of the games I do solely for the achievements I have gone out of my way and replayed many games in many different ways to get every last achievement like within the resident evil games.
3:26 he did all that to that poor girl and didn't even let her keep the change smh
Let her keep the change? Nord doesn't pay me THAT much, besides, I let her be in the video, whats cooler than that?
@@RennsReviews ofcourse how foolish of me, some may only dream of such an experience, my liege
Yoo that's trippy!
this is the greatest thing I've ever seen
I love how xbox basically has nothing to do with this
Going after collectibles in games or hunting rare achievements in general will likely consist of a low attainment percentage.
So it just is another way to get in your pockets.
holy shit i had to skip the mcdonalds ad read, that was so cringe it made me anxious
It takes big balls to make this kind of content. Respect++
Like for example - Forza horizon 4 has 178 Achievements. That's fuking insane.
Gears 5 has 181 Achievements.
Halo Infinite has 119 Achievements at launch.
I come from an age where you played a game to have fun, not to get a pat in the head
I never cared for achievements or scores when they were introduced, and still i don't
I see them as a reflect of the way you play (e.g "hey, i've killed 78 enemies with the flametrower!")
But i'll never orient my steps to pursue any (e.g "I HAVE to get those 5000 enemies killed by flamethrower or i won't be able to sleep at nights!)
I once had a friend, we played a zombi game together and had fun, but at a certain point, she started to try to get all the achievements in the game, and then our sessions became boring A.F
You would tell me that she was having a good time, but she herself told me that it was boring. So, what's the point? To others can check that you have had a boring time? Yeeey great.
No thanks
If the game is fun, i'll keep playing it, and at a certain point i'll check the achievments as a curiosity.

The first game I ever Achievement hunted in was Halo 3. 😃 What a time those days were for gaming, back when the world was a much simpler place.
