I haven't rode snowmobile in two decades but I'm buying one this winter. I've been spending weeks trying to find the right gear. Helmets, (open vs closed) monosuit or jacket bibs, best boots, best base layers etc. It's almost overwhelming. However this helmet looks like the best option for me. I love the idea you can remove the shield and run goggles on warmer days or open the shield and flip down the visor
Once you go heated shield you will never go back. The flip down sun shield is invaluable. I use it all the time. On a warm day or if you get hot you can put your shield up and keep the sun visor down. It protects your eyes from wind but helps you cool down. I've been using a helmet from MT like this for 3 years now. Nothing compares. You can also replace the sun shield from smoke to like a yellow color that helps you see snow bumps and contours better when it's all fresh and tends to all look the same
Hi Shperax. Ive had amber and smoke tinted, and I prefer the smoke. but amber is available if you wanted to change it out. Thanks for the great feedback.
Just picked one up last week from royal and can't wait for the snow to fall and yes very comfortable and styling. It was your review that put me in the right direction thank you 😊
I've been using this helmet for a few years and it's been a great helmet. I even use it riding ATVs even though that's not what it was designed for. I find the visor to be kind of for looks and not very functional but the helmet does allow for it to be removed and still look good. I'd highly recommend the helmet.
Excellent Helmet... I purchased the Delta R4 Ignite for this season. I own a bunch of Ski-doo Modular helmets in all three generations and colors as well as a HJC all to match what gear I'm wearing,.. (Kind of a helmet collector so to speak) Well, That's what my wife calls me anyway :-) One comment I would make is it comes with a pair of shield hinge plates so anyone who doesn't like the snowcross style visor can remove it and make it look like a basic helmet.
Hey Dave another great video, helmets makes good discussion , it can be a tough choice, chasing comfort, affordability, and of course the safety factor in one package. Keep up the great work, great content , Happy New Year. Look forward to your next one.
Nice review Dave. Please post an update review after a few rides and let us know how it does in real world situations. I've heard that the Delta R3 and R4 run on the cold side.
Too wet for riding here yet, but i have plowed snow with it, and standing around shooting and it was warm and didn’t fog up. But i will post an update.
I bought a Delta R3 Carbon beginning of the year and loved the features and look but found it was to cold for my liking. I sold it and bought a CKX Mission and absolutely LOVE that helmet
I used the CKX Mission helmet for my trail riding and wasn't as impressed with it. I think this is the next helmet I will try. I wear a 509 Altitude helmet for the mountain days and have always liked the motocross style. This is the best of both worlds for sure!
@@MyOldSled Thanks again for this review. I just ordered this helmet for riding my new Expedition! I really like how the breath box isn't a rubber or silicone. I think I'll be changing out the glare shield to the orange one though. How did you find the grey lens for lower light days?
How about a review on the ignite 4. Interested to hear long term. Just talked to 509 about my altitude and tactical helmet being to cold even with different goggles. They will give me credits on them towards new merchandise so thinking about r4. Was told to lock tight screws on shield.
I run a delta R4 it is important to note: the heated shield comes with a cap for the input connecter and the cord has a specific end that needs to be pushed in and turn so it locks into the visor otherwise the cord may fall out
Bought a zox majestic SVS. Great value for all the must have features. Heated shield, integrated sunshade, breath deflector and is modular. Doesn't have a heated fancy latch or neck protector but I can live without. My only complaint is its heavy but it's a million times better and safer than the old junk i had before this. I expected to have to spend $500 CDN to get those features but was pleasantly surprised.
Nice review. Nice looking lid. Using a Titan at the moment. Great helmet but only complaint is some seepage of air on those reallllly cold days from around goggles. If I can't tune the goggles perfectly this year may look to a 509 or Mission next year. Happy riding!
I bought the Oxygen last year before the season and I really like it. I was going to buy the CKX Mission for the Wife, I would like to see you review that one.
I hear great things about the oxygen. Glad to hear you like it. It's more than I would spend on a helmet, but there are a lot of cool features for the money. Thanks for watching.
Hey Dave picked up my new to me 2010 GSX SE 1200 holy man does it ever rip I thought it would be a log in the corners but with all that weight on the front does it ever feel nimble . Only thing I need to get used to is the touchyness of the throttle because 4 strokes have a lower rpm range then 2 strokes the clutch engages really early 15 minutes of riding and I could feel it in my forearms. Something ill have to get used to. The air ride suspension gobbles up the bumps. And luckily because of my weight I find it easy to throw the sled from side to side. Happy sledding. Praying for more snow. If you want me to give more details on this sled let me know
Hey hey, love your vids. I got the same one before ya posted. One thing I hate is the neck curtain is right in your face when you lift the whole face shield up. I was hoping the magnets would hold it up and away from your face some how. Maybe Im missing something. Happy trails!!
@@MyOldSled i like to ride off trail, and when I where a full face or modular helmet they tend to fog up on me, I’ve seen your videos on how to not fog up and use your tips but I just move to much and get to hot, but when I use a snow cross helmet I don’t fog up, and that’s why I use It, and yes I do eat moose!👍
Really thought about getting one of these. I wore a Klim F3 for a while which is a motocross style helmet but decided to get "dual sport" helmet with a heated shield. I ended up going with the Bell MX-9 Adventure Snow Electric Shield W/ MiPS but I was more or less between the Bell and the 509. I've heard really good things about the 509 and will def look at one again one day. If you ask me, for the money there are a lot of good alternatives in the $200-$350 range. Personally find the BRP helmets to be quite ugly and it always seems like my riding buddies are always fiddling with those things, mostly the BV2S. Know a few guys with the Oxygen helmets but thats a completely different ball game in terms of cost
Hi Evan, I like the look of the BV2S, the oxygen is not really my preferred aesthetic. The MX9 is a nice looking helmet and it comes in a little cheaper. I don’t think it’s modular though is it? Thats pretty much a must have for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
So, this checks some boxes for me and is sold on RevZilla, so I was curious...Would you recommend for someone as a Motorcycle helmet? And do you think it would be an issue in 90°+ heat?
My BV2S is a large and its snug, my DR4 is a L and it doesn't feel as tight, but its a good fit. I think they will exchange if it doesn't fit, but confirm on the website.
Hey Dave, great vids 😄 very informative. Have a suggestion or idea for a video. You’ve already done one for carbureted and fuel injected sleds. How bout liquid cooled and fan cooled. The pros and cons for vintage sleds. (Especially if there considering buying an older liquid cooled ) I would have loved knowing my 2002 mxz 800x (liquid cooled) over heats on warmer or shallow snow days. Do new sleds still struggle with this? Any tips or tricks would be great.
Thanks for the suggestion. I file them all. This is a really good one. Ice scratchers are a good addition if you find you're riding on low snow days. Really scratchers are meant to help cool and lubricate the hifax but they do help cool the sled by throwing snow onto the heat exchanger. Also, how you ride will of course affect how much heat you generate.
You didn't mention that this helmet can also be used with goggles if you remove the shield and add the included covers. Recessed sun shields are in many helmets - how goes this compare in accessibility? Does it freeze up like my ckx on cold days when it's retracted? How is it for muffling sound? Is the visor in a good place or does it get in the way? To be fair, my daughter has this helmet and I consider it to be very good, but outside the fidlock and chin curtain the takeaway here is simply that you like the helmet. I enjoy your videos but I think you should have put a few more miles on this helmet before the review.
Hi Dan, No worries I’ll be doing a follow up when the lake on my lawn freezes and I get some miles under me. I received the gear after my riding season was over last year and didn’t want to sit on it longer. Thanks for taking the time to comment though good points.
I should have waited. Last year, I bought the previous model R3 non-modular. I miss having a modular and it has the yellow tinted sun shield which I absolutely dislike. Looks like they also improved the neck curtain which is horrible on mine. Now I can't justify dropping another $400+ on another helmet. Maybe next year ;-)
Nice helmet!! Thinking of getting it but my 2005 rev 600 ho adrenaline, same as yours but carb. doesn’t have a plug for it. I don’t have a battery. Any suggestions on how to installing one? Maybe tap into power from headlights? I know skidoo sells a kit but is it plug and play or do I take power from a source? Great vids
Hi Jerry. I believe they work AC or DC. I think you can wire into the lighting circuit. My both had them already but ill have a look at the 670. It only had ac so im sure thats right. Im sure 509 could point younin the right direction. It comes with the wiring in the box.
I just got a CKX Mission this year after 2 failed FXR helmets. I had a snocross style with goggles for my first FXR helmet, worked well until year 2 the seal between the goggles and helmet failed and leaked a bunch of air. I had to get a new helmet because I can't have that on trails. So I went to a modular helmet from FXR. I liked that but again, after 2 years the seal failed between the lens and helmet. I can't have that. The CKX Mission I heard really good things. I wanted a modular helmet, but this face shield opens so wide that its almost modular in style. Its got the heated shield but I'm curious to see with the air management system if I even need the heated shield. Its also got a visor which I liked and disliked from my snocross style helmet. It was goot when riding into the sun, you could tilt you head to block the sun, but its also a good sail. This one on the CKX is more aerodynamic, but could still be a shield for the sun. Its also got an internal visor which I liked from my other modular helmet. The other new feature I'm excited about is the neck gator, I've not had a helmet with one so curious how that works out. I've been itching for snow to try it out, but its all ready when it comes.
I love my mission helmet. I actually sold my Delta R3 and bought one. I bought it with the electric visor but did not need to plug it in even once this winter even in a -30 morning in Cochrane
Hey thanks for the review! I have a few follow up questions. I have a modular 3 from brp. I've had it for a while but there's a few things I really can't stand about it. One, the breath box is very uncomfortable on my face and it gets really nasty from breathing into it all day. Two, it's really quite heavy and hurts my neck. Three, it leaks air all over the place. How does it do with air leaks? Does the breath box effectively evacuate the air to be used without a heated shield version of this helmet?
Hi Corey,. I believe this helmet comes standard with the heated shield. Id have to ride with it more to be sure, but the components fit together well, and the visor seals tight. If you look at the helmet in profile, the jaw is far out from your face which helps some with condensation. If the vents are closed and the chin curtain is on, the air wont evacuate as well of course. Its a pretty simple deflector which directs your breath down. Your modular seals to your face and directs exhaled air away, but the tradeoffs are obvious. Wet mask against your face. I have the modular one and i dont find it heavy or drafty. My bv2s seals and is nit drafty, but ita heavy and bulky. Its all a balance.
Kind of a stupid question but did your helmet come with an owners manual and warranty literature? Just bought this lid from Royal Distributing and it looks like it was a returned package where the returner didn't put the manual back in 🤦♂️🤦♂️
There are no stupid questions on this channel Leo. If you are curious, ask. There was a manual, the wiring for the shield, the wire to plug the helmet in, the covers for the visor, a warranty card, a 509 sticker, a white helmet bag, and the helmet
Hello Dave, I been looking at buying this helmet for quite a while now, my question that I haven’t really got an answer on would be how does the cable work for the lens. All my riding is in the backcountry, does the cable have a quick disconnect for when you fall off the sled? Or would this feature with the heated lens not be suitable for my style of riding? Any input or info would be very helpful! Thank you very much!!
The end that plugs into the helmet is a quarter turn to lock in, but there is a cable that plugs into the sled, and the cable from the helmet plugs into that. All of the other connections are just like rca connectors and would pull apart. How often do you falloff :)
Trying to find the NEXX X.Villijord/Touratech Adventuro Traveller Modular Helmet here in the states. Price difference is huge but it's obvious it's the same helmet. So naturally I want the 400 price vs 650. I think I can find a seller from the UK. Any tips out there would be super. I've debated the R4/Maverick/New CKX/Scorpion/Castle/Even the Caberg or Schuberth. I like my mod3 skidoo but it is a little small. And lots of moisture build up.
@@MyOldSled , It did..but I always have several wires on hand as back-ups for myself or friends who forget theirs, so its bound to happen that they get mixed up sometimes....no big deal, just something to be aware of if someone needs a replacement wire. Also, thanks for a real review and, like you said, not a commercial.
Hi mark. Finally had a chance to do some riding. The helmet is like you said a 1/4 turn, but it plugs into another wire, that plugs into the sled. That one isn’t a 1/4 turn. Sorry, maybe I’m not understanding something?
@@MyOldSled if you try to plug in a standard plug into the shield it seems like the contact isnt good, and the shield doesnt work like it should. as soon as i used the 1/4 turn wire that came with it...problem solved. enjoy it...seems to be 1 of the best overall on the market for the price.
I’m a little late to this party. But at high speed my head was getting pushed back due to visor grabbing air.Chin curtain when module raised blinded you had to stuff in shield. And finally you will feel air draft when moving.Sorry fir neg comments but not a fan of helmet.
Hi Alex, Hey everyone has an opinion as long as it’s respectfully put comment any time. True the chin curtain would hang in your eyes, but that’s true if any modular. Only something I would use on a very cold day when I wouldn’t have it open. The snow cross visor does catch wind for sure. I didn’t find it drafty at all. Your points are valid, but over all I still like this helmet and used it all last winter over my others. Thanks for your feedback.
They were on the sled when I purchased it and are branded SkiDoo, so I assume they were a dealer installed accessory. If you search for anti slip running board pads, you should be able to find something. I think sportech made something.
@@MyOldSled that's what I thought, thank you, I ordered the Delta R4 just now anyway, Because after seeing way it fit your face it looks like it seals decently on your cheeks and around your nose. So that tells me it may not fog up my glasses too badly. Fingers crossed thanks for the video
:) well, i will say a good helmet is worth saving for. The other helmets I bought were non-current, except for the HJC, and I waited and watched for sales. If you watch the 509 site, they’ve had a number of sales and discounts. Thanks for watching.

My bv2s seals and is nit drafty, but ita heavy and bulky. Its all a balance.
@@MyOldSled thanks for the reply. I did notice it comes standard with an electric shield.
does anyone know if there are recessed earphone areas in this helmet for a communication system?
Kind of a stupid question but did your helmet come with an owners manual and warranty literature? Just bought this lid from Royal Distributing and it looks like it was a returned package where the returner didn't put the manual back in 🤦♂️🤦♂️
There are no stupid questions on this channel Leo. If you are curious, ask. There was a manual, the wiring for the shield, the wire to plug the helmet in, the covers for the visor, a warranty card, a 509 sticker, a white helmet bag, and the helmet
@@MyOldSled thanks. I guess I'm making a call in the morning to exchange it for one with all the contents.
Oh awesome Dave!, thank you for the info!. Ahahaha its more so rolling the sleds over, or jumping off digging buddies out kind of thing!
great review thanks. I am looking to get the Oxygen or this
Glad you liked it. Let me know what u end up getting
Hi Chris. Never tried that helmet, so no tips for you. Sorry :( Thanks for watching.
How do you take off the neck Guard
Just unsnaps.
There are a couple of tabs around the outside that just pull out. it was simple.
@@MyOldSled ok thank you
just a note, my 509 r3 has 1/4 turn heated shield plug...standard plugs ...sort of work....doesnt seem to get work properly with them.
Did it not come with wiring? My R4 did. Easy to swap out.
Great video David
Hi John. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Appreciate it and glad you liked it.
Do you know if the sun shield from the r3 fits the r4 ?
Sorry eddy I dont
What are the running boards mats could you Link them please
They were on the sled when I purchased it and are branded SkiDoo, so I assume they were a dealer installed accessory. If you search for anti slip running board pads, you should be able to find something. I think sportech made something.
@@MyOldSled ok thanks
Does 509 have any discount codes I’m ordering one right now.
Not sure I’ll check.
Has anyone tried out this helmet on a road bike? I’m trying to find a helmet that works for both sports.
Do you think this is a good Helmet for someone that wears glasses?
As good as any. Glasses are a pain no matter what helmet you buy. Never solved that completely. The heated shield doesn’t really help glasses.
I use a $50 Amazon helmet
Which one?
For 50$ Is it made out of cardboard
Nice
If only it had bluetooth speakers in it.
I really like that helmet I wish I could get one for free
:) well, i will say a good helmet is worth saving for. The other helmets I bought were non-current, except for the HJC, and I waited and watched for sales. If you watch the 509 site, they’ve had a number of sales and discounts. Thanks for watching.
I think I have the exact same helmet lol
How do you like it?
