Parasite, like every Bong Joon-ho film, is about and explores class. The poorer family aren't poor for lack of effort or intelligence. The father had tried to start several different businesses, and had worked several different jobs- they all failed. The mother was a gold medal athlete. The son is said to be smarter than a lot of college students, and the sister is incredibly intelligent. Their poor living conditions were not for lack of effort. The poorer family has had to adapt to survive and without a doubt put in more work than the wealthier family. They were simply born unlucky. South Korea, like many countries including the US, has high disparity between the rich and poor. High youth unemployment rates, high prices of housing, high cost of living. Extremely high competition in terms of education, super low wages for entry level jobs- etc. As you may have seen in Squid Game, almost half of South Korea's population owes debt. And a lot of times that debt is owed to illegal firms aka loan sharks. If you owe debt to these people, the interest is insane- if you can't pay it back awful things could happen (like in Squid Games; they could make you sign away the rights to your organs) If you die, that debt is just passed on to your family members. The poorer family obviously loves each other a lot, and will do what they can to survive day to day. If that means leaching off of a careless absurdly rich family- so be it. They're forced to survive, and if they see an opportunity- they'll take it. It might not be the most moral thing but morals don't feed your kids and put a roof over your head. And keep in mind they only got so far because the rich family is so used to their comfort and wealth that they don't care OR can't even fathom somebody needing to do that. The rich family are "nice" but also so comfortable they're ignorant. The poorer family's mom says once, "if I was that rich, I'd be nice too"

That's the point of this movie. The class divide is so stark that it doesn't matter how talented or intelligent you are, you are limited by the wealth class you are born into.
I actually felt bad for the family. I cried when Kevin was hit with rock and the ending too. The rock floated in the water because it was hallow which is why he survived. Otherwise he most certainly would have died. In the end it did not have any real value. I loved this movie. It's literally a masterpiece.
Wow... after seeing this movie several times, I'm only now realizing the deeper connections with the rock, beyond it just being an aspirational symbol. The amount of detail and layers Bong Joon-ho put into this film is just wild

One thing to think about with this movie (which I was so excited to see you guys watched! ) the poor family aren't necessarily bad people I'd say, they're just victims of a terrible system they happened to be born into. Same with the wealthy family- It isn't necessarily hard work or being "good people" that got them to where they are, as much as luck of being born into in the right economic class. The tragedy of this story is that no matter how hard the poor family worked or how clever they were, the class disparity is so crazy that they were never going to escape their poverty. Which sort of makes their behavior a little more understandable.

U 100% explained it in an amazing way in a very sociological way… in one of my sociology classes we talked abt this movie and this was almost the same way my professor explained it❤
That doesn't make it any less true that they did things that their poverty absolutely does not excuse, and that their plan's catastrophic failure was ultimately their own doing.
Sometimes it can be hard for americans to understand this because the "no pain no gain" narrative is deeply rooted in their culture.
I'm sure there's going to be a lot of people commenting this, but I feel you're looking at the movie at a very surface level. Their situation is not a simple 'work hard and you'll succeed story'. Their poverty keeps them in a vicious cycle where they cannot escape from. We are shown and told numerous times that they are smart, crafty individuals (which you have also noticed a few times) and they do work hard (they mention a few times that they've had different jobs in the past, even a restaurant business; the sister is very talented at arts and obivously worked hard to learn both art and photoshop). But their economic status keeps them behind other people. In this capitalist society where money rule they just had the bad luck to be born without any money. So no matter how hard they work because there's so much competition they will always fall behind people who can use their money to boost them in life. The rich are not rich because they are exceptional individuals but because they were simply lucky to be born in the right family. That does not excuse hurting other people, of course. But this is not a fable meant to teach what good morals are, but a critique of our society where the poor have no choice but to go to extreme lengths to simply survive. While the rich get richer and remain completely oblivious to it(or simply choose to ignore "lesser" people - "do not cross the line ;).
I would definitely recommend watching some video essays on this movie. I think you would enjoy it and it would be very eye opening.

like at 1:18:22, can a person living in a semi-basment house with those type of living standards due to their parents’ misfortunes and decisions be able to live a life like those children born into wealth through no efforts of their own? quite unlikely.
The point is that the children are smart, but yet due to financial and power struggles they are seen as less than. They didn’t go to the biggest colleges or live in a nice home because they have no money. In this world money = power. It shows the struggles of society. The poor is willing to do anything for power and money, but the rich/wealthy become selfish when it comes to money as well as power. The fact that in the end the father of the son didn’t care about the fact that there were hella people hurt shows how selfish they are..ofc that’s your child, but as a parent I could never allow anyone’s child to hurt in front of me. I could go into more detail because these aren’t the best descriptions of the power struggle between the rich and poor in this movie.
that scene where the rich mother going inside her wardrobe with many nice oufits and the next scene is people at the basketball court getting free clothes. horrible

You gotta think of the economic and social difference of where you live and where they live. The difficulties of getting work even if you're educated, the disparity of the working class from the rich, the age differences. What may be weird to you may be the normal way of life to others. 😅

If you watch the tense parts of the movie at 1.5x speed, I think the tension in the film decreases by about three times. I know many people who have watched this movie more than three times.It's such an excellent film, and especially the contrast between the first half and the latter half's tension makes this movie even more special. But watching the crucial part of the movie, the latter half, at 1.5x speed? Oh my goodness! It's like swallowing wine without savoring its taste, and I believe it's like not fully enjoying half of the fun this movie has to offer.

Mr Kim said "the best plan is no plan at all". At the ending, mr kim's son start write a letter and begins with "i have a plan..". So it means, he would never buy the house, the dad wont make it
And also the stone is floating at the flood scene, which mean it's a fake stone. And in the dream at the ending scene, the stone is at the bottom of the river like the other stone. This indicates the distance between reality and expectations
It’s really interesting watching reactions of this movie and seeing people put themselves in the shoes of the rich family (imagining what they would do if that happened to them) vs the shoes of the poor family, not realizing that we’re all a whole lot closer to the latter (being “parasites”) rather than the former.
It's so odd that they are rooting for the rich family like a lot of points was missed here about social classes. I understand them thinking the actions that the poor family did was bad but they just kept shitting on them and didn't even try to understand even a little bit.
Us rooting for the rich family is a stretch. Us wanting to make sure people don’t get hurt by further bad decisions is more so what we are rooting for.

Great to see your reaction. Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but most of Bong Joon-Ho's films have some element addressing climate change and how it affects poor people more than the rich. Notice how the rain storm was just a minor inconvenience to the rich family but the poor family almost lost everything due to flooding. The set and houses were designed to show how the poor family lived partially underground. These are real apartments in South Korea along with others that are completely below ground with no light. When Seoul had severe flooding in last few years several people lost their lives in these apartments. Bong Joon-Ho said he was interested in how a parasite finds a host, but what if there's already a parasite using that host? He said, unfortunately, poor people end up having to step on each other to stay alive instead of joining together to fight the systems that keep them poor. You can also see these themes in his movie Snowpiercer.

I think A LOT of people don't understand the film. Most people just think "oh parasite, because the poor people are leeching" when in reality it's so much more than that.
There are definitely deeper issues at play for sure! But wrong is wrong 🤷🏾♂️

*edit: parasites in nature feed off of something, with the parasite being the only thing that “benefits” at the end of the day. The rich stay safe in their (literally) glass houses, despite all the world throws at them. The rest of society is left to languish and become corrupted by their desperation over the scrapes/the limited resources leftover from what the wealthy and powerful haven’t hoarded and only ever end up hurt in the long run for it.

It's not a thriller or mystery story. It is an example of how the rich are the true parasites who live off cheap labour - and hoard so much wealth , that the poor are pit against each other, just to survive.

You guys say if they put this smart/energy towards something productive they can achieve success. But this is wrong. The difference between us and korea. Is that in the US if your from a poor family and hardworking you can succeed. Its much easier to get into a good college as SATs are much easier and you can go through the community college route. They also have financial aid. But in korea you cant. if your from a poor family, chances are your going to stay that way. To get a high salary job in korea you need to come from one of the best colleges and have connections. Even doctors/lawyers arent paid that well if you dont have connections. Connections mostly come from your family or college. You can only get into college by CSAT. You cant just be smart to do well on CSAT. CSAT is on a TOTALLY DIFFERENT LEVEL compared to SAT. Lots of kids in korea go to cram school starting from elementary, junior or high school. Every day they are studying for their CSAT. Cram schools are expensive too. Richer kids are able to get private tutors or get into better cram schools. So they already have the edge compare to poorer families.
i wouldn’t say it’s easier in the U.S but i agree that if you’re born into a poor family in korea, you’re most likely to stay poor. the reactors problem is that they viewed the whole movie based solely on the actions that everyone took instead of looking at the bigger picture. the whole point of the movie is to criticize the disparity in wealth in korea, and how there’s almost zero chance for anyone to get out of being poor. basically, from what i’ve seen, the reactors are purely brainwashed by capitalism to genuinely believe that the poor family could’ve made it out of where they were living in any way. lol
I took a whole class in college that was centered around this movie and let me just say, all of your takes about it are completely normal and valid. Y'all are looking at it from a moral, straight-forward, common sense perspective. The class was pretty split as far as opinions... some thought the poor family took it too far and deserved the tragic outcome. Some sympathized way too much with the poor family and equated being poor with justification for what they did. Others had a more nuanced approach and judged both families in the context of how difficult it can truly be to raise a family in a highly capitalistic, competitive society, especially when you're trying to scrape your way up from the bottom. Some people hold onto their dignity and morals no matter what, while others don't. At the end of the day, every individual is different, hence, why people's opinions on this movie are so diverse. you're looking at bad and good in such a linear way... the world isn't bad or good it just is... these people born into these circumstances are surviving any way they can, animals do that in the wild all the time. Yes as human beings we have choices, but we will never understand the lives and choices of someone living in TRUE poverty, where you don't know if you will have a roof over your head or money for your next meal, so those people come into a world that constantly teaches them lessons of cruelty and unfairness and they do what they have to do to Survive. In asian countries especially wealth and education is the biggest priority, and people who are not able to go these traditional are usually shunned by society and looked down upon so people literally will do whatever they can to achieve wealth and status, its literally subhuman how cleaners, maids, people doing service industry jobs are treated.

The film is about wealth disparity. It's about how we live in a system that makes the poor poorer and the rich richer. Need, poverty, distress, makes people do unimaginable things because humans are full of survival instinct.
The rich family looked down constantly on the poor throughout the whole movie. "The line" creates an us vs them mentality, the father was fine as long as poor people didn't cross the (class) line. The mother being thankful for the rain because of how a beautiful day it was afterwards, while poor citizens lost homes. They got rid of the nanny for "TB", instead of waiting for her to get better and letting her rest. Why? Bcs us, working class people, are disposable.
No matter how smart, how clever, how resourceful, without the luck, the right conditions, connections, you'll never get out of poverty because of how the system has been set up.
When the father in the shelter says "the best plan that doesn't fail is having no plan"? Yeah. That hits. When you live day to day, that's it, there's no planning for the future, no saving up, there is always an emergency you need to spend your meager savings on. You can't plan for the future when you have so many problems in the now.
The true parasite of the film is hope. The hope the rich instill on the poor of "if you work hard enough you'll make it" when that is 99% of the time not the case, because the system has been set up against them. The rich will always benefit from the poor, they don't have any real reason from seeing us succeed, it's not convenient for them.
Desperate need leads to desperate acts.

My family went hungry, we went poor we lost our home, my family went from having a lot of money to none, I never saw the wealth of my family, but my parents lost everything, and growing up poor... that really changes the way you see things. It's been shown that poverty alters brain chemistry and development in children, we have worse memories, planning and decision-making abilities. So the wealthy with every opportunity in the world judging the poor doesn't sit right with me, when growing in poverty itself already puts you in a disadvantage on a development level.
The thing about the girl and the tutor IS weird. she might be 17/18 but still I agree it is weird. and I think the movie does this on purpose

i think it was intentional bc she trusted him and told the tutor about her family and used it to get the other family members into the house.
Baby bottle is because he hasn't eaten for days and she didn't want him to consume too fast. Baby formula is made for easy digestion. Also the reason for banana. These are details you normally wouldn't see in other movies.

Lol you know capitalism got you when you end up rooting for the condescending rich family who kept talking about not crossing the line between rich and poor, as in "You're just my help, act like it".... And the way they were fetishizing poor people buying drugs during their sexy time? They're not exactly "good people". Maybe it's the culture and language barrier. The mom for example was not trying to poison them at all... she was genuinely concerned and wanted to make sure they were good. Of course what the poor family did was morally wrong but put yourself in their shoes. Korea has a huge poverty problem and class also plays a huge part. They would never make it out of their status doing honest work. It's a cutthroat society. Good reaction nonetheless but I suggest you guys watch some analysises or video essays on this move to interpret it differently than yall have.

I know some people said yall didnt really get the point of the film yall did to some degree 1 thing that flies over most people's head when watching the film is the rock when their basement was flooding the rock was floating it did not sink which means it was hollow inside and they were given that rock as a symbol of hope,wealth,and prosperity but it being hollow and not a rock the whole time just shows they were given false hope they were going to fail eventually and it being hollow is also the reason the son was able to survive the attack from the man in the basement

I’m glad to see people commenting on this reaction about the reactors’ superficial understanding of the movie. “What are they doing with the money?” “They can buy the house” “He bought the house at the end, he did what he could’ve done before & it only took him a few years”… How ignorant… Is it that easy to buy property in America? The director of the movie confirmed that it would take the boy 500 something years to buy it. How is the female reactor acting like they’re getting paid so much for their jobs at the house, enough to afford their own new house? Does she even know what currency South Korea use… They have BIG numbers… A lot of notes but with lower value… Honestly so so so superficial… It is NEVER black & white with class & wealth. I expected African Americans especially to realise this because of the generational class disparity that is passed down… Went over their heads…
Thanks for your comment. However, although the family was in a tough situation scamming people and murdering them is never the right way to do things. That's not superficial it just may be a hard fact that you may overlook because you feel more towards one side than the other. They have told us this since elementary school "two wrongs don't make a right".

Hey I get all the intricacies that this movie has and believe me it is VERY WELL written. But point blank I won’t ever ask a killer, robber, or scammer why they chose to target me? I don’t care! They are wrong! I’m not someone else’s punching bag just because life hasn’t gone the way they would have liked. You can type any response you want but I doubt you’d be in some back alleyway thanking a robber for stealing from you because you are (by the world’s standards) considered more well off than they are. Let’s be real! You are talking to someone who has family and friends on both sides of the fence that this movie depicts, I wasn’t born yesterday. The example you gave of someone being robbed in a black alleyway - lol, this is completely different to the Park family's situation? First of all we are aware of, as you mentioned, of the circumstances of both families. & THAT is what would make us try to look beyond the superficial. This is not having sympathy for evil lol... This is acknowledging the fact that there is light/dark in all of us & depending on our circumstances some of us may be compelled to do "wrong" in societal standards like having to scam to survive & ensure financial stability. This excludes murder because that happened when things spiralled & was also due to the old maid's situation. It is not black/white.
Again. I saw the movie and and understood the underlying tones of what compelled the people to act in the way they did. This was a great film...one of the most thought provoking films we have seen on this channel. Still WRONG is WRONG. Even your last statement seems to passively push off the final violent acts. All the poor decisions that were made led up to an even more public and brutal poor decision. It's sad to see people making evil decisions...and it's sad to see people suffering from the evil decisions that others have made.

I love this movie! and I liked that you included scenes that other reactors usually don't include to cut time so I enjoyed the reaction.
Btw they explained the reason why he stayed down there, its because they had a huge debt probably from an illegal place (gangster) with huge interest so you can never really pay it so they would literally follow him around and beat him up for the money so he escaped by staying down there since they had no money.

I love the “don’t give the whole movie away” comment at the beginning because she really only highlighted the theme of the movie…there’s no way to really put into words the twists and turns the ACTUAL storyline takes lmao. It’s one of those that it’s best to go in blind because it is WILD.
They aren’t full of resentment the day of the party initially. They’re just exhausted because they lost everything, they’re homeless after this natural disaster that effected a whole community, they got no sleep, endangered themselves by going into their dwelling to grab the few things they could. Then they gotta show up to a party and act happy and normal? I couldn’t.

Y'all did miss a few things that require cultural context. The ages of the boy and girl weren't that great especially given the cultural norms and they don't view the whole high-school/college dichotomy as all that big of a deal. It's only "grooming" from an American pov.
The rock represented luck. It looks like certain mountain formations in miniature so it's essentially a sculpture given a superstitious significance.
The smell came from living below sea or sewer level, and why the toilet had to be above the basement apt level.
The conflict w the housekeeper and husband show how poor people fight over scraps and some even worship the rich thankful for getting crumbs.
The Parks weren't good people. Korea is a stratified society where movement into a different class than you were born is near impossible no matter how hard you work or how smart and capable you are. The Parks got the education and job befitting their privileged status. Their kids likewise had tutors, art therapists, housekeepers, drivers etc to continue the cycle. The wife had only to spend the money living in ignorant bliss. When the rain fell on the shining hill, it cleansed the air while devastating those in the gutter.
You can say the Parks are the parasites living lives propped up by poor people while considering them only as paid servants. You only needed to notice the micro-aggressions aimed at Mr Kim for the most part... reluctantly shaking his hand, testing his driving on the DL, telling him to refrain from getting too familiar, telling him he's getting paid so he should change his attitude, then demanding Kim to drive from the scene.. and eventually to throw the keys as their art therapist was dying from stab wounds in his backyard
its a movie that I have many thoughts about. its incredible how well they’ve done this.

I appreciate that you weren't afraid to call out the Kims for the awful things they did. A lot of people make excuses for them because they're poor. Which I kind of get; I've been poor my whole adult life. And nobody asks to be poor, and it's monstrously unfair, and I feel the weight of it every day, and I have fantasies about a better life. So there are some bad deeds I'm willing to excuse if someone's trying to get by. A lot of what the Kims did goes wayyy beyond that. A lot of people also try to justify the heist or even Mr. Park's murder by pointing out how "bad" the Parks were - and then they cite things that literally aren't wrong at all, or totally victimless actions that reflect poorly on them but aren't actually hurting anyone. Certainly nothing that somehow deserves being scammed, let alone murdered. And if you have the integrity and good sense to simply point out as a bald fact that the Kims did wrong, or that they brought most of their ultimate fate on themselves, or that the Parks didn't deserve what happened to them - people tell you you didn't "get" the messages about class and privilege, or that you don't understand poverty, or that you're privileged. As if it's impossible to be aware of two things at the same time, or analyze a movie on more than one level.
For what it's worth, Bong Joon-Ho said there are no villains in this movie. I think this is the fairest and most charitable interpretation. Nobody deserved any of this. Nobody deserved to be rotting in a sub-basement or a bunker. Nobody deserved to be cheated out of an honest job. Nobody deserved to be scammed. Nobody deserved to have their home flooded. Nobody deserved to be killed. Nobody deserved to be exploited. Nobody deserved to have their family broken.

I feel it’s the same with like the girl from inventing Anna . Rich people aren’t as on guard is poor people they don’t covet their stuff as much because when you have a lot things lose value and as far as recommendation, they don’t want to do extra work so if someone they trust or someone with money says it’s fine they usually believe it because getting scammed isn’t the same as getting scammed when you don’t have money.

The family's desperation is thier motivation, their actions were horrible, but how nuanced the characters are, you get why they do what they do, but it's still a horrible thing to do. They never poisoned the food they were gonna give to them, but they weren't able to, the husband was already on kill mode, the rich daughter was smart enough to get the poor son to a hospital quickly enough to save him, shows her empathy, and the rich dad having a reaction to that smell shows to the poor dad that he seems them as the same, even though he just killed his only daughter, no wonder he fully snapped.
This is probably one of my favorite reactions to one of my favorite films of all time.
This was way too stressful for me to watch on my own, so I'm really enjoying the reaction video as a way to watch it with friends, kind of.

They dont get the whole point of the movie.
This kind of movie is amazing, but kind of disappointing watching a very superficial commentaries that they did not got the whole point of the movie. The whole juxtaposition of the divide/class in our society. Movie like this with a deep message should be an eye-opener on our current realities.

Director said in South Korea where wealthy disparity has gotten so bad. Rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. It will take total of 564 years for the son to save up enough money to buy that house. Which basically means it won’t happen. Same thing happened to the old housekeepers husband. Expect he borrowed money from loan sharks where they could literally forcefully take stuff from you or even kill you, etc. That’s why he has been hiding in the basement

Let me start with saying I love the channel and you guys reactions, so no shade here just offering perspective. This film isn’t meant to make you root for one family or the other. Neither family is more righteous. It’s not really about right or wrong or good or bad.
Both families are the “parasite”. The poor family is leeching off of the rich family’s wealth and the rich family literally can’t handle their day to day life without relying on the services of the poor family.
On a surface level you could say what the poor family did is “wrong” but history has shown us time and time again that people will do what they need to do to survive and that’s human nature. And they are in deep poverty, every day is fight or flight. They are fighting for survival daily. In the US, ghettos are rampant with people selling drugs, selling sex, and committing crimes just to escape poverty or survive. We have an understanding that these people are typically not “bad” people. They are products of their environments and victims of a messed up system. This family is no different.
This story is about classism and wealth disparity. It’s not a question of who’s right or wrong but rather a question of is it fair for there to be a system in place that favors some people just because they were born in the right circumstances when there are other people who are obviously more intelligent, skilled, and hard working that have to stoop to crime just to escape their circumstances.
“It’s never gonna be real”. What you said at the very end of the film. Yes. THAT is the point. That no matter what they can’t escape their situation because of the society and system that they are apart of.
