In the beginning of the movie, the mom comically said "you should have brought food" when they received the stone from son's friend. This draws parallel to when Jessica could have brought food to the man in the basement but instead the son brought the stone, cause the following murders.
The thing is that all members of the family have the qualifications and skills for those jobs but they don't have a "diploma", "status" to actually access those jobs because that's all people care about, they only care about papers and "connections". Even having a diploma or certification is not enough, they still need the "connection recommendation".
Your point is also evidenced by the fact that the biggest crime they were charged of after squatting in someone's home and tying people up in a basement was forgery.
@@anarchist_parablethey were never caught staying. The basement is a secret to the owners where the old assistant’s body stayed put, to be buried afterwards in the garden by the father. The rich family only knew they were lying about their qualifications tho. The mother killed the crazy basement guy in self defense, who couldn’t say anything to the police because he was dead and the killing of the rich guy was by the father who wasn’t found so, they couldn’t have been charged with any of those things you mentioned because there was no proof. If there was, the rich would have made sure they were sentenced. Justice is tougher to the poor so they were “lucky” on the regard.
In the beginning of the movie the mother of the Park family says the opposite - that she doesn't care about documents and to her it only matters how he does his job and how the kids accept him.
One big detail I caught was that when the rich mother and poor father drive home from the grocery store, the father overheard the mother say that the rain (the same rain that flooded and destroyed the Kim’s family’s home) was a blessing because it cleared the grass or something of that sort. An eye-opening thing in regards to people of the higher class becoming blind to the harsh realities the lower class face.
Put yourself in there shoes. How would they know that somthing like that happened to the poor people. And would you care enough to check if everyone was in the city was alright after some rain? I'd get annoyed if they knew it caused devastation but they dont so.

On an upbeat note, Id like to think that the reason the rock doesn't float at the end is because, unlike previous hollow promises, symbolised by the rock which floated, the promise that he makes to buy the house is truly meant and that is why the rock is real in that scene
I believe the mother playing the current housekeeper who kicks the other down the stairs is a reminder that hierarchy is human nature and those at the bottom who climb up the social ladder are often just as likely to maintain their status by treating the others badly, keeping them from rising.
i believe quite the opposite - as this is a very obviously anti-capitalist film and it implies that the system puts people (even members of the same working class who would otherwise be friends, as she said that she was nice) against eachother. So not really natural, but this is how they were made to have no choice and see who is the "strongest" to survive- literally
How so would you say? I'm familiar with Kafka's Metamorphosis but I don't really see any large parallels between the plots because Metamorphosis only focuses on the Samsa family without much interaction with outsiders (aside from Gregor's general manager and the subtenants)? I love how this movie explored a different side of an overused topic (rich vs poor). We've seen so many films that cover the black & white, such as the evil corrupted rich taking advantage of the poor. While that's a sad truth, it's only a portion of the real power dynamic in our society. We often overlook how the poor is always fighting with each other when they could be pulling their heads together and help each other. We see so many examples through everyday crime news (all the hate crimes, neighborhood crimes, small business/convenience store robbery). The reality is, most middle-elite class in modern society are just minding their own business. Sure, there's a portion of rich people who are truly evil. But really, the rest of them simply don't give a shit about what's going down in the lower class community. Their main interest is on which company they should invest on next. That means they also have no business in directly harming the poor. At the same time, they casually look down on the poor people living in the same city while also casually donating money to Unicef.
the indifference of the rich towards the poor is exactly why they are often seen as evil. their wealth comes from the misery of the poor at every step of the way yet they have no will to change it.

The coming years will be challenging but we need these changes even more now. 🙌🏼❤️
i know the ending is probably a fantasy and the credits song kinda explains what happens instead but I hate sad/ambiguous endings so im gonna say that the ending is real and they were able to live happily together (although im really sad that the sister actually died cuz I liked her character and its really depressing that she wont be able to join her family in living their dream)
I also checked out this movie after finishing squid games, and it was phenomenal. Was originally disappointed that you didn’t have any videos that covered it. Until now!
The rich wife calls the rain a blessing because it clears the air from the yellow dust from china and other air pollution. Not because they come back from camping.
i just watched this movie for the first time and wow, I didn't even pick up on all the nuances! Great, very original story! Korean movies can be so fantastic!
I noticed that Ki-Woo said his sister was the most suited to the upper class life out of the whole family, but shes the only one that dies. Not sure what that symbolises but there you go
I watched this film for the first time since it's premiere, and i actually appreciated the way the "parasitic" family grifted the wealthy family in the first half of the movie esp yhe part where they set up the houskeeper as having TB - i actually clapped when the father took the Kleenex out of the bin after putting ketchup on it,and showing the lady of the house - her face...thought she was going to faint- piceless. But funnily the removal of the housekeeper leads to the real "parasitic" behaviour being shown, this film deserved its zOscar imo.
Great video, still trying to figure out what he drew when comparing Jessica to a rose. I know what the actor said in the Q and A but, what was Bong’s intention. Also love the transition of Da-Hye playing with the corner of the work sheet and then her mother counting the money. Also love the symbolism of the toilet up the stairs. Bloody brilliant movie. Not ashamed to admit I’ve watched it seven times now.
@Heavy Spoilers Great video Paul! You nailed all the key details like the “free extermination” fumigation scene that foreshadowed who the parasites would be. I’m really hoping that this review will lead you to review Bong Joon Ho‘s other classics *The Host* and *Snowpiercer.*
This was a great breakdown ! So many things I missed I can't wait to go back and re watch and than make all my friends that haven't seen it watch it and rewatch it untill they understand it's brilliance!
Hey Paul, thanks for the video! It definitely wasn't my favorite movie by a long shot, but it was engaging. Hearing all of these extra details definitely makes it better though!
Da-song fell in love with native american culture frfr, its funny because he was the first person to be accused of being a liar but slick was the only one who wasn't. ram don wasn't his favorite evident because he had zero interest in it. Ms park told the housekeeper to make ramen because she wanted it, but didn't want her husband to think she's a fat girl 😂
I'd say why there is no definitive bad guy in this movie is that at times we all are bad. We all can be parasites. We all are parasites. On each other. On the world. On each other's WIFI. Also the toilet up a stairway kind of means shit flows downhill. It flows downhill no matter the class. We all shit on those "lower" than us. Imo.
I might be the only one on this but I feel bad for the MC. Yes it was like a parasite that he got the job. However, I believe that he is a victim of his surroundings. He’s just trying to do what’s best for his family. Is is wrong for what he did 100% yes, but I feel like he is actually a good person who wants to do the right thing. That’s kinda what I got from it. I might be the only one on this.
0:08 I am a huge fan of your videos and everything you have put out but you did get one thing very fundamentally wrong in this video. You mentioned how the poor family are the parasites of the movie but actually it's both families. The movie actually very much highlights this duality. While the poor family cannot live on their own and have to constantly use others to continue living, such as using people for job references, using other people's Wi-Fi, and of course the obvious of taking what they can from the rich. As for the rich family, they have actually become too privileged. The rich family is that a point where they can no longer tutor or babysit their own kids, they no longer cook for themselves, they don't clean their own house, nor do they drive their own cars, and have to use the poor to continue living themselves. Both families use each other heavily throughout the film in order to get by. The relationship is parasitic due to their complete disregard of how their actions affect the other family and selfish nature to use each other for their own wellbeing. 0:08
I think you misunderstood the meaning of "parasitic nature". The poor family is being parasitic by leeching on the rich family eventhough they're teaching, cleaning and driving the rich family, they're still frauds. But the rich only employing them and using them and paying them. This is not parasitic at all. You might say symbiotic where both parties get something, but definitely not parasitic.
This movie was absolutely amazing! Loved to learn more about some small details I missed, like the number of chairs changing. One thing that really struck me are the themes of togetherness and being apart in the movie. The poor family is almost always together. In their small home, going out to eat together, getting a job together and even when the Parks are away and they are in their house you see them coming together again. Meanwhile the Parks mostly seem to live very seperate lives. They are hardly in the same room as each other and that only seems to change once they employ the poor family. You also see it all fall apart for the poor family when they all split up during the birthday party and final scenes. They are all physically and mentally in different places. The father seems to have made up his mind that he will kill the people in the basement. Meanwhile the mother who actually killed the women by kicking down the stairs thinks everyone was overreacting and maybe they can talk it all out today.
The happy ending isn't real guys. The guy has brain damage, he can't express any emotion except humour. Even when he was sentenced and he saw his dead sister, he laughed. He obviously never bought the house, and the father lived out his years in the basement.
"Money is an iron" The rich woman sits in the back seat and rolls down the window in disgust at the poor person smell of the driver, while meanwhile propping her feet up inches from his face.
I saw the film as the the origin story for Joaquin Phoenix’s head injury in the joker. The sons story could be the prequel to the Joker…gets whacked in the head & starts laughing at inappropriate things, goes crazy.
Hollow rock symbol of fortune in movie Parasite can be key holder bought from ebay. Not everyone is stupid put key under door mat :) Maybe is Spaceballs code from glass firmament is 12345.
The question left unanswered though is when they all went into the basement and first discovered the lady’s husband, why was her face cut and beaten up? Was it because it was hard to cut the security cameras or did something else happen? I’m deeply confused about that part.
In order to truly appreciate Korean or other Asian films, one has to be detailed oriented and know how to read backgrounds. Nice catch especially the money part where rich mom takes out few cash before handing it to the dude and acted like she put more for him than his friend Min for sake of “inflation”
@@ChefSporty he couldn’t dude, wanted murderer and still without anything. Security cams would’ve catched him or someone else all possible, but yet not needed for the movie plot

I also checked out this movie after finishing squid games, and it was phenomenal. Was originally disappointed that you didn’t have any videos that covered it. Until now!
One of the best films ever made and really helped push Korean cinema into the spotlight!
Yeah it’s a classic
The rich wife calls the rain a blessing because it clears the air from the yellow dust from china and other air pollution. Not because they come back from camping.
i just watched this movie for the first time and wow, I didn't even pick up on all the nuances! Great, very original story! Korean movies can be so fantastic!
This is a great breakdown! Learnt so much more than other videos covering this movie xx
I noticed that Ki-Woo said his sister was the most suited to the upper class life out of the whole family, but shes the only one that dies. Not sure what that symbolises but there you go
한국어로 번역까지 해주시고 너무 감사합니다. 잘 보겠습니다.🙂🙂🙂
Just seen this again yesterday and it’s still a masterpiece.
This is the fourth explainer video I've watched about this movie and I got some new perspectives. Nice work!
One of the best films I have ever watched! It was just that amazing!
I've never had such a big crush on a character like with "Jessica", she was in my head for days. I was simping, like down bad, guys.
Could u pls tell what did he draw or what was said in the qna or the link maybe?
Also this playing with the corner of the worksheet signified?
He drew the ghost (the man who lived in the basement) .. facial features resemble him ...
Man that is a 10 out of 10 thumbnail right there love it
Completely agree, love that scene
Awesome! Thanks
@Heavy Spoilers
Great video Paul!
Thanks for the comment, always nice to read positive stuff
Who cares if it wasnt your favorite you didnt have to say that smh
Da-song fell in love with native american culture frfr, its funny because he was the first person to be accused of being a liar but slick was the only one who wasn't. ram don wasn't his favorite evident because he had zero interest in it. Ms park told the housekeeper to make ramen because she wanted it, but didn't want her husband to think she's a fat girl 😂
Thanks for the video! I haven't realized about the ending song and the rock!
Brother also watch memories of murder it was also directed by bong joon ho it was one of his best
Great analysis

I am a huge fan of your videos and everything you have put out but you did get one thing very fundamentally wrong in this video.
Ellen heter jag! 💋
Välkommen till denna sida goding, för dig har jag väl inte sett här förut tänker jag? Berätta gärna lite om dig själv och sånt!
Such a fantastic movie and layered breakdown.
Both awesome.
Also underground with a plan to return to the surface... Mephisto.
Connected.
07:18 my favorite scence. Something so simple looks creepy af
I literally watched this amazing movie again 2 days ago with my wife. She loved it. This is perfect timing!
Ey hope you enjoy the video
WOOOOOOO I love the Korean Film Appreciation
It’s definitely a movie to see 2 times and enjoy the scenes that foretell what will happen.
Probably my first time being this early😅. Keep up the good work!
The stairs are blocked when ki-taek is going out to meet his son
Just finished this film
I wanna watch it again
Awesome 👌
Amazing video Spoiler Man 👍
The happy ending isn't real guys. The guy has brain damage, he can't express any emotion except humour. Even when he was sentenced and he saw his dead sister, he laughed. He obviously never bought the house, and the father lived out his years in the basement.
Clicked for the thumbnail! Haha 👣🐾
Same here
Best part of the movie!😂
Another great video, thanks for sharing
Awesome video Sir 👍👍👍
"Money is an iron"
The rich woman sits in the back seat and rolls down the window in disgust at the poor person smell of the driver, while meanwhile propping her feet up inches from his face.
Oh I was not expecting this breakdown!!!
She fell while moving the bookshelf. It happened on screen
@@doych999 it was fucked up before she got into the house though?
I think she was also still having a bad reaction to the peach fuzz.
I’m pretty sure it was said that they used loan sharks cause the husband owed a lot of money. I’m sure they beat her up asking for it.
No , it was because of the loan sharkers ... That's why she came to see her husband
tf is that thumbnail bro
The subtle comedy is something always talked about less
That bathroom situation 😳
Can you do a Breakdown of Netflix's My Name (undercover) ???
In order to truly appreciate Korean or other Asian films, one has to be detailed oriented and know how to read backgrounds.
Nice catch especially the money part where rich mom takes out few cash before handing it to the dude and acted like she put more for him than his friend Min for sake of “inflation”
This movie crazy, extracurricular a banger too
You should do some Korean horror films since.. you know.
This movie is great. I should rewatch it now.
Omg the "hollow rock", I didn't know what...it changes my perspective now...thank you for telling us
SK leading the way in cinema fr
This is best best review ever, now I can watch this movie from a very different perspective.
holy moly!
That’s thumbnail said it all. The bottom of her feet is equal to his head. That’s the best way to describe about class.
One of my favourite movies of all time, if not THE favourite, loving this video
Cheers mate
Greatful comments👌👌👌
u are good yutber
Great movie
Tarantino thumbnail
Can the father even survive alone in the basement ? There’s no one having access to give him some food 😢
I hope he dies
@@gabrielalvarado7849 he prob did, if it was all fantasy, but mane, I sense some hate here. It’s Christmas time
question why didn’t he just leave the basement when the house was empty to go back to his family
@@ChefSporty he couldn’t dude, wanted murderer and still without anything.
Security cams would’ve catched him or someone else all possible, but yet not needed for the movie plot
@@_TheViewer_ he could’ve argued crime of passion 🤷♂️
Masterpiece movie 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome video Paul!!!!
RESPECT!!!!
RESPECT!
정말 이것보다 많은 의미와 사회적 메세지가 담겨있는 작품인데 외국인은 모두 이해할 수 없는게 안타깝다
have you seen extracurricular? would like to see a video on that if u have
after a few watches now i feel it just makes the parks seem cool as hell. sucks for the kims
What’s good about Korean movies is it’s budgeted close to Americans or looks like it
Yo! I didn't realize that the title of this movie goes in pair with one of his others ! The Host ! Get it ? The host and parasite exist together in nature lol
Also can u do a breakdown of birdman 🐦
Loved the movie💯💯🖤❤️🔥i feel lile with everything that happened to him he will have the strength to actually go to university and become rich to get the house
