Everything about this movie is a hidden message, the title "parasite" should be interpreted not only for the poor family, but also for the rich family, both are parasites but in a different sense.
The stairs, the colors, the rain, the smell, the credits, the dialogues, even the rock, the rock wasn't even real, no real rock will float.
There is also a theory that Jessica is the only one to die because she represents the ones in society who *should* be capable enough to move up between the classes, she belongs there, but she dies, she dies because poor people no matter how hardworking and smart they are, they will never reach that point, they are crushed by the system.

theres 4 parasites in the movie, the main family, the basement family, rich family, and Id like to see the rock as a parasite too. kevin said that ever since that rock was given to him, it felt like it was stuck too him, and at the end the same rock is what gets him (almost) dead. just like parasite, they stick to you, and kill you

Mr Kim killed Mr Park for a combination of reasons. Mr Park always looked down on the workers, even though he was not directly rude to them it was obvious that he saw them as beneath him and merely tolerated them. This is shown by the smell which is an ongoing symbol in the movie for social class. The poor family smelt bad - the rich couple hated the smell but tolerated it because the poor family were of use to them.
Although they paid them well and seemed like nice people, when it came down to the scene of panic and emergency, the rich no longer made an effort to keep the image. Their son had a siezure but their employee got stabbed in a critical area yet they showed no concern for her. Note that none of the rich people tried to help save the bleeding tutor (even after the murderer dies, they just watch and flee). While Mr Kim was trying to help the tutor, they scolded him and told him to drive them to the hospital even though they were not injured. Despite their selfishness, Mr Kim still threw the keys at least somewhat obeying orders.
When Mr Park goes to collect the keys from under the other poor guy's body, he again shows that, even in such a crazy situation, he cannot ignore the smell (the low class status) and holds his nose. This ultimately sets off Mr Kim because even though there are poor people dying in front of him and he needs the keys to help his son he has the time to hold his nose. In this moment, Mr Kim realises that Mr Park can never overcome his prejudice against them (i.e. cannot ignore the smell). Moreover, both his children seemed to be dying so Mr Kim really had nothing much to lose and wanted Mr Park to also suffer.
Of course, it is never justified to kill someone but that build up of being discriminated against and the rich not really having a concern for poorer people. Mr Park has always been adamant about boundaries he sets between him and his employees. Even when Mr Kim was trying to get to know Mr Park better and asked him about his wife, he shut him down. Then after Mr Kim experienced one of the worst nights of his life, he is expected to go dress up at a kid's birthday and Mr Park justifies it because he's getting paid more without even checking if he's fine with it. Mr Park never really viewed the poor as people but merely as a means to make his life easier. I guess it was disappointing for Mr Kim as he seemed to look up to him and his wealth but turned out to be someone irredeemable in his eyes.

also, the rain scene is important where it shows how events like rain affects the poor vs rich family. the rich family complained how the rain ruined their plans for camping and the birthday party while the other lost their home, I think that is where the poor family stated to realize the huge difference between them and the rich family. and when they saw what the rich family really thinks of them like, you see some resentment start to form

I think you guys missed that the rich family are no where near good as well. They’re just a lot more subtle with it. Everything they own they got off of the backs of the poor’s labor. This could most clearly be shown when the basement guy sets off the “automatic lights.” As you guessed, the smell is the smell of being poor. Also the entire sex scene is them disrespecting the poor. Being poor is just a kink to them and not something they see as a real struggle. I saw someone suggest that the poor family didn’t get caught when they were trying to get out of the house because the rich family see themselves as too good to look down and actually see the poor. Like the director said, the most accurate title of this movie is “Parasite*s*."

Understanding the struggle of being poor and having a kink about pretending to be poor are not mutually exclusive. A person's kinks are their own business, and do not make them a bad person or deserve literally any judgement.
Almost everything you cited is either something they couldn't possibly have known about (how were they supposed to know a squatter in their basement was working their lights?!), or a completely victimless action and/or comment that was only able to hurt the Kims because they were secretly in earshot when they weren't supposed to be. Why you're making moral judgements about what people say or do in the privacy of their homes is beyond me.

The rich wife was "nice" because she never had to fight for survival. As the poor mother said, she can afford to be nice, and she would ne nice too if she had all her needs met. And as for Kevin, he will never be in a position to afford the house, that's the tragedy of it. It's classism, He sill always stay in his class and will never ever be able to afford something like that even if he works his whole life. A house like that price is way over a lifetime of minimum wage salary.

i complete agree with this comment, and want to expand on it and the "no angels" discussion from the other thread: the REASON both families have to go through such ridiculous, dishonest actions is because they do not have the ability to get basic resources any other way. The REASON they do not have the ability to have basic resources is because of the rich. Mr. Park complains, as an after thought, that the original housekeeper ate enough for two, but it was never a risk to his or his family's survival. The rich could pay enough in taxes or individual generosity or just providing a wage that covers the cost of living, but they do not. And the film shows that wage and skill are not equivalent: the family is either capable enough at their jobs that no suspicions as to their qualifications is raised (driver, tutor, housekeeper) or by demonstrating the amount of money the fake persona of "Jessica" makes by spouting information she learned for free OR made up compared to the amount the genuinely talented low-class girl is able to earn. The reason the two poor families don't team up is because there is not enough access to resources; the Rich will only give resources to one of them. This is demonstrative for the wider problem of how the rich force the working class to compete with each other, instead of team up to force them to divide resources fairly. tHAT is why "mr. kim" removes the false headdress iconography created by another oppressor after he sees mr. park is repulsed by the corpse of the man who worships the rich, and kills him in an act of solidarity with him. He knows he and that man who lived under the stairs are the same-- a metaphor that becomes literal at the movie's end. It's the lack of any other punishment against the amorality of the rich that put him in that basement. they're all in the cage of a basement, the literal and figurative low. it's where they started the movie, and where they end. the rich all hate the smell, the rich can organize a party with hundreds of people on less than a day's notice, but the rich do not organize a way to tactfully create a way for them to smell better. that would require them to care about others. They Don't. They only care about what they can take from them (their saturdays, their time) even though they already have next to nothing. Because they are parasites.

One interesting point made in a class I took where we examined this film: most viewers who don't sympathize with the "poor" family don't because they view them as deceitful thieving crooks for infiltrating the Parks with their entire family as staff members and trying to lie their way into a better financial position... however, this is a very common quality of the ultra-wealthy in our society. How many articles and documentaries exist about wealthy people swindling others out of enormous amounts of money? How often do we see the wealthy employing their companies or (cough) their administration with their family members? Most of the criticisms we make about one group could be made about the other, just in different circumstances.

@@awhnos That's what a lot of South Korean movies are trying to portray, the inequality of chances in a highly competitive world.
And it's sad to see the commenters saying they like the rich family "this poor nice family" and hate on the poor family, getting as far as saying they deserved what they got. Seing them being shocked at them trying to grab crumbs from the riches through dishonest means, and not being shocked at the giant gap between how much the rich family has access to, and how little the poor family gets (even when they all work)
It's also sad to see three people not getting the point that the movie makes about kindness being easy when you have everything handed to you, and how when you don't, sometimes, you have to do ugly shit in order to survive or see your family survive. And even though you like yourself less afterwards, you would never regret it because you know you had to get your hands dirty and that there was no other way to get some perspective.
I wish people would notice that more in daily life, and that the poor would receive less animosity and resentment when they try to get their share of the cake. And that the rich would get frowned at when they profit off of people's labour and desperation, justifying it by "I paid for it" as if it was normal to hold so much power over others depending on how much wealth you were lucky enough to have access to.

"Scamming" the rich for money, that most likely is withheld from taxes (which they intended to pay, as long as they could exploit the worker's financial situation and basicslly force them to live up to their expectations as the owners), is legit karma.
It is extremely unrealistic to have so much money and immoral to accumulate it just for it to be turned into materialistic items; so "losing" a few thousand or hundred thousand dollars means absolutely nothing to them. The labor is the foundation, the laborers are replaceable. At the end of the day they were going to spend money on services because they themselves cannot bring themselves to do normal daily tasks.
Capitalism normalizes overabundant wealth in an individual and a small amount of people in a given population; when this happens low-income to mid-income people are indoctrinated by the system and they begin to sympathize with the rich man (when there is no reason to, at least with sociopolitical and economic issues).

I think people need to learn a bit more about Korean culture in order to understand how Kevin will never be able to move up classes. The divide is too far apart which is seen in how low they have to go and far from the wealthy neighbourhood. Even being trapped in the basement it’s hopeless. Each the rich and the poor are parasitic in their own ways. The house itself is a character as well. Such an iconic film. I saw it in the theatres and it was an insane trip.

  • @Kjw052
    @Kjw052 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

the movie kinda shows how society works... the family that lived in the half basement immediately started to look down on the couple in the full basement and how they chose to fight each other trying to secure and higher place in society but ironically ended back up to the same place if not even a lower place. I interpreted the rock as false hope of poorer people or it represents the family being fake

The majority of us (especially in the US) are only one or two expensive health emergencies or layoffs away from being in the Kim family's situation. If you believe your situation is more like the rich family being scammed, and that you can empathize with them more than the poor families, then the system has you fooled. The rich family is the top 0.01%.

the three families in this film were all narratively designed as parasites under the economic strain of capitalism by the director, Bong Joon Ho.
The destitute couple secretly mooching and living off the rich family for years, justifying that they only took a little. The husband, Geun-sae, were in the basement bc he's indebted to loan sharks for his failed cakeshop (our protagonists were talking about this particular family in the scene where they were eating at a drivers canteen. they just didn't know each other and only that they were neighbors). The wife, Moon-gwang, was the shadow lady of the house and she'd done whatever it took to keep it that way, even when the fortune was never hers to begin with.
Our protagonists, well, crafty and clever as they were, you've seen what they did to get decent paying jobs. Ki-taek, was the patriarch of the Kim family and the decision maker but he was the least skilled to work among his family. Chung-sook, the mother, was an accomplished athlete but had to make do with her lot in life. I have a particular fondness of Ki-jung, the daughter. She's far more crafty than her brother and, if given enough education and employment resources, had a better chance to lift her family out of poverty. Her smart but less driven brother, Ki-woo, even said that she fit better to the lavish lifestyle than the rest of their family, foreshadowing her better adaptability to move up in the society. That's why she had to die; the narrative didn't allowed her to move out of her capitalism assigned station.
The rich family cannot properly function without their employees' works. The Park's patriarch, Dong-ik, being driven around everyday for work, and his company was named Another Brick as a reference to a Pink Floyd's song (Bong's favourite band in college) which carry the meaning that any tragedy, injustice or abuse can only be “another brick” in an already existing wall. His attitude to his employees was to throw money around and expects them to just shut up and bear their job. the rich mother, Yeon-go, named Ki-woo as "Kevin" willinilly to appear more westernized as he was her daughter's English tutor, lied about giving "Kevin" bonus payments, couldn't do basic housekeep, goshdarn indolent (when I was a child, my parents would employed live-in domestic assistant bc they're both working. my mama would berated me to hell and back if I asked her to do simple tasks when I could just do those tasks by myself), and had a tendency to emulate poor people's condition to fuel her sexual fantasy. the daughter, Da-hye, while granted that she's also experiencing some degree of neglect from her parents, was naive and looking for attentions not given by her parents. Da-song, the favourite child, pampered, fragile, waited on hand and foot, and being let running loose most of the time.
There was also the case of cultural appropriation by Da-song with the plethora of Native American "merchs" encouraged by his parents, portrayed as another type of parasitism.

But they were genuinely appalled at any moment in the film where someone was being mistreated and had enough empathy to try to empathize with everyone. Lemme be clear, this is a great thing, these are the type of ppl you want in the world. But it goes to show what the mom was talking about when she said "rich people and niceness". it's frustrating to see that yall thought the rich family were good guys. it's all an examination of class in Korean society where no matter what talent or intelligence you have, you are essentially doomed to live in the class you were born into... and the Parks were just ungrateful beneficiaries of that system. the Kims were never going to afford college or move up in any other way. their deceptions were in service of getting jobs/work that they put effort into fulfilling. this was the poor competing with the poor for the few scraps left by the rich. some of the poor start to equate the rich with virtue as if all they have is earned or meritorious, like the basement ghost, and of course the even rich who knowingly and unknowingly use the system are used to believing themselves both better than and more deserving. the Parks considered them all replaceable fodder to feed their needs. the daughter was no pawn either as she obviously got into dalliances with anyone who happened to fall into the job of being her tutor.

Actually I think the rich people especially the parents were also bad as the poor family in the movie, they were really not the main point of view of the movie that's why we sometimes failed to look about their bad actions too. I think the main point of this movie is what humans are willing to do to survive, it doesn't really matter whether you are poor, middle class or rich. No one's is purely evil or good, just individuals striving to survive in this society.

This is one of the movies that showed the West how good Korean cinema is as well, and the movie that smashed the 1 inch barrier known as subtitles. This movie achieved a lot. Something that occurred to me just recently, is that Ki-taek is very often the one screwing things up on the Kims' end:
    - He misfolded his share of the pizza boxes, resulting in their pay being docked
    - He's the only one who screwed up and started to drop character while on the job, which would've aroused Dong-ik's suspicions if he had just one more brain cell
    - When the family was listening in on Chung-sook and Moon-gwang, he's the one who slipped and made everyone fall
    - He let Moon-gwang get away while he was tying her up, which meant Chung-sook had to kick her down the stairs to keep from getting caught
    - He knew Moon-gwang had a head injury, but didn't tell Chung-sook so she could get her medical attention during the night
    - He stopped putting pressure on Ki-jeung's stab wound when she said it hurt, which for all we know may have made the difference between her living and dying
    - And of course, in the end he snapped and killed Dong-ik, which turned a situation where they all could've gotten away with a mere probation into one where he's wanted for murder

Bong likes to talk about class in his movies (Snowpiercer is maybe the most obvious). In this case, the poor family thinks it can move up by being a parasite to the rich family. Then, when they discover another poor family, rather than work together to move up, they just tear each other down. The poor are never able to move up in society because they fight amongst themselves. The poor dad eventually recognizes this and instead of killing the guy who killed his daughter, he kills the rich guy instead. But now he's in trouble from the law, and he takes the place of the guy who killed his daughter in the basement. The family is broken, but the son still dreams they can somehow escape their lower class. In societies where class is more obvious (the UK for example), it becomes more obvious how hard it is to get out of the lower class. In the US, the lower class believes, with hard work, it can move up and so those class differences aren't things Americans think about like they do in countries with a more established class system (India, being another example).

I don't think the mum is someone you would call "pure"... like yes, I guess at the start she comes across as that, but in all the shots we see of her... she's not. for instance, even at the beginning, she tells Kevin that she's "added a bit for inflation" to what Min's rate was, but just before she tells Kevin this, she actually takes some out of the envelope straight away. She may be gullible, but she's immediately characterised as a liar. Furthermore, she's able to easily get rid of those working in the house without a valid reason. Mr. Park even just tells her to "make up some excuse" to get rid of them. Hence, she throws people out without a second thought - this even happened to the housekeeper who'd been working there for years. She also. throughout the entire film, makes insensitive comments about poor people (e.g. the scene on the couch) and doesn't really care what happens to those around her or the other people in the city (e..g the rain). So no, she's not pure, but simply "nice because she's rich". She's also gullible because she's rich - the reason why she didn't care about Dahye's grades as long as Dahye was happy.
