I'm teaching catering in one of the secondary school in Malacca. How proud I am after watching your cooking video watched by the whole world about Malaysian food. You are our young ambassador.Keep up the good job,Go girl
Hello. I'm a Malaysian living overseas and I really needed this! I used lemon (the small kind) for this recipe and it turned out OK. Love your channel, keep it up! :)
Hi Grace, It's now 2023. Just came across your video and straight away want to try your method of pounding sambal belacan. I used the belacan made in Penang. The end result is absolutely amazing and mind blowing. Thanks for the video.🙅
This one is very similar to what we eat in Burma. It's called "ngapi taung". We usually eat it with rice of fresh vegetables as well. My favorite is dipping cucumber and bamboo shoot in that.. Yum!
+Nyonya Cooking. Great video. One question. How long will it last in the fridge? Or can it be kept in room temperature? I'm thinking of making a big bulk. Kindly advise.
In Bali where I’m coming from traditionally since lime and calamansi is quite foreign we use kaffir lime instead and we usually serve along with fresh grilled fish
Hi Grace, thanks for the recipe. Made this simply awesome sambal belacan - and now my wife insists of bringing along a small portion whenever we are having pan mee at the hawker centre. Lol. Thanks again
Hi, I stumbled upon your you tube videos while searching for some recipees two days ago. Now I am one of your fans! Will watch every Nyonya Cooking video available. I have tried cooking winter melon soup yesterday. The soup tasted so good! Thank you very much.
I only found your you tube channel yesterday. I don't know "anything" about Malaysian food but was intrigued with the sambal belacan recipe and also the recipe for sambal your presented. I cannot believe my good luck in finding the belacan here in New Jersey! I bought 2 packages of it! Can you incorporate a little of the belacan into your sambal receipe or, can't they be combined? Also, at the 36 mark you mentioned something about a dal mill so I'm assuming you can eat this with dal? Have you made a video for using dal in a recipe and, can you possibly make a video incorporating some different dishes that use your sambal and sambal belacan recipes? Sorry that these questions are so elementary but I am a complete novice. I plan to check out ALL of your videos and begin learning about the cuisine. I think your videos are great!
Cheryl S. Hey...congratulations on being introduced to malaysian food :D No, I did not add sambal belacan in my other sambal recipe. Both are individual sambal recipes. As for dal, we dont usually add belacan into it. There are other recipes which uses belacan esp. curry dishes. Good luck and happy cooking!
Sambal belacan have a different style to make it..... My father used to heat the shrimp paste until it smells...,( i say funky)... And then he fried the chillies for a couple of seconds, for the calamansi lime, he used whole even the skin. . except the seeds of course,.... Blend all together, and Walla.... You got the sambal belacan, .... From my experience, there are some sambal belacan that are made raw, even the belacan is not heated.....
Hi...I’m Joseph from Singapore. Thank you for sharing so many of your recipes. I can’t help noting that you keep making references to Germany and availability/substitutes of ingredients. Just wondering....Are you based there and your videos shot/produced in Germany ?
Hi Grace, i love this very simple version of sambal belacan so what is the main difference with the other sambal you use for Nasi lemak ? Is it mainly for Nasi lemak n can i use it to fry vegetable or meat with the other sambal ? Thanks
I just follow your Sambal belacan recipes and it works thank you and how do I get in touch with you and show you my sambal belacan, unfortunately, I blended it for too long here in Perth.
myanmar ngapi htaung tastes very different from sambal belacan because the belacan base is different and the Burmese use a bigger than orange-sized lime called shout-thee which has similar fragrance to kaffir lime but lots of juice. Burmese ngapi htaung also has garlic in it. both are amazing in their own ways though
Gooossshh...hahaha...It smells soooo good :P Hehehe..I think it's difficult for me to understand it from a different perspective. Maybe like herring and me.....
Hi I am writing to you from India. In our place we do not get the belakkan. What shall I substitute instead? We do get the small tiny shrimps in the packet..Do I buy that, wash it and grind it?? Will it be good?
What about those sambal balacan that you need to pan fry or cook it with oil ? Is there a difference to using this (sambal balacan) compared to the in cooked ones? What about the dry type?
Great looking recipe, thank you. I found a sauce in the Chinese supermarket yesterday called "Jimmy's Sate Sauce", I was wondering if you know it and have any recipes which use it? It's made in Hong Kong but says on the jar it's a Malaysian recipe.
Hmmm...Sate/Satay sauce is made with peanuts in them. I'll come up with a video on that soon :) So, maybe you can check it out then. Not sure about Jimmy's Sate Sauce though, I haven't seen it.
Hey Nyonya? I have a block of Belacan, once opened how do I store it and how long does it last once opened? BTW we have frozen Calimansi juice packets here in the USA so people please look for them in your International Mkts.
Hi Grace, I like the way you're introducing malaysian cursine. I tried to look up this sambal belacan recipe on the website, but i have noticed that the recipe is exactly the same as the other sambal recipe adding anchovies. It doesnt seem correct, would you be able to update the website witht the correct recipe adding the belacan? many thanks in advance :)

Hey, sorry. TH-cam has been changing the functions so many times. You can find the full recipe: www.nyonyacooking.com/recipes/sambal-belacan~SkkWdDoPMcW7 We post all of our recipes there.
Nyonya Cooking I know this is a really late response, but I experimented a bit and tried using a few dried anchovies (which I keep around for Korean dishes) ground up and then toasted a little in a pan. It turned out really well. Added a great savory-salty note that was missing from the sauce after omitting the belacan.
How many neighbors came knocking at your door when you toasted that belacan? LOL. BTW the 'lime' you used, the correct name for it is calamansi (more widely used than calamondin).
I was kinda worried actually since I had my window open but thankfully, no one came knocking on my door. And yes, thank you for the word - calamansi! I was looking for the english name for it and it just didn't appear when I needed it. Haha...
I'm teaching catering in one of the secondary school in Malacca. How proud I am after watching your cooking video watched by the whole world about Malaysian food. You are our young ambassador.Keep up the good job,Go girl

Best in the fridge and you can store it for about 2 weeks. I've never kept it longer than that :)
Great recipe.
In Bali where I’m coming from traditionally since lime and calamansi is quite foreign we use kaffir lime instead and we usually serve along with fresh grilled fish

Gooossshh...hahaha...It smells soooo good :P Hehehe..I think it's difficult for me to understand it from a different perspective. Maybe like herring and me.....

Refreshing and spicy at the same time! YUMS!
3:48 Two Tumbs Up ha ah... Great :D

Hi, is it recommended to de-seed the big cayenne chillies? why do we do that?
Esh C Just to remove the "hotness" from the chili!

Nyonya Cooking I know this is a really late response, but I experimented a bit and tried using a few dried anchovies (which I keep around for Korean dishes) ground up and then toasted a little in a pan. How many neighbors came knocking at your door when you toasted that belacan? LOL. BTW the 'lime' you used, the correct name for it is calamansi (more widely used than calamondin).

Great recipe, but you forgot to remind everyone that grilling the belachan will stink up the house for days and to open the windows hahahahahaha :D
where can i buy Belacan ?
Hi, can I know where do you get the solid rectangular shape of belacan?
Catherine Chee Asian grocers or if you are in Malaysia/Singapore, any wet market or supermarkets.
Great thank you! I think Jimmy's can be used as an ingredient in such a satay sauce but I'd rather see your authentic version.
I'll put it in the request list ^^
I think it's similar to shrimp paste
Can't find belachan!! :(
Whhuuuuttt...where are you located? >
Next door! Austria ;((
Not even in Vienna? They should have a rather well equiped Asian Store there :)
I'm not in Vienna :(

Sambal belacan
what is balacan
since she said pungent, i assume it`s shrimp paste..
belacan is a kind of solid shrimp paste.. something like, ermmm if Korean got kimchi, we Malay got belacan.. something like that..
Yeap, they are both right. It comes usually in a block/box. Look for it at your nearby asian grocer ^^
ho ciaaaak

I really don't think lemon should be a substitute for the limes. Too bitter
Not the best substitute but some can't find limes in places they live :(
I think you are cute Malaysian fire goddess! LOL

Safwan Kamal :P Thank you
Why spoiled the video with silly, annoying music ?
How hot is this? If (1) were wimpy pale white boy and (10) was Malaysian fire goddess what number is it?
Haha...you are funny. I'd give this an 8, really depends on what type of chili you use.
how long can I keep the sambal belacan n where to keep thanks.
