Many years ago? As a matter of fact Genesis retired on 26.03.2022, when they’d played their very last concert in London. That’s not so long ago. After his return in 2007 Phil remained a band member.

I don’t think people understand that all the members of Genesis had solo careers at the same time they were members of Genesis. They never left, just slipped in and out. Phil had the best, most successful, solo career, but the other members went solo, too.

Phil was the drummer for Genesis, a progressive rock band. When their lead singer Peter Gabriel went solo they searched a long time for a replacement only to find they had a great one, Phil, already in the band. Phil also had a great sense of humour that he injected into his shows. I believe he was the only man who took the super sonic Concorde from the UK to the US to perform at the Live Aid charity concert in both cities on the same day. He started in the theatre as a kid as the Artful Dodger in the play "Oliver".

I've seen Phil Collins many times in concert, both as lead singer of Genesis and on his solo tours. He's one of my heroes, as I am also a drummer. I grew up listening to Genesis (and Rush) and being blown away by his playing but then also by his incredible song writing and vocals! He's the total package. Yes, please do some live Genesis to see him in action! Genesis was a great Progressive Rock band, first recording in the late 1960s but it took them some years to get famous. By the 1980's they were one of the biggest bands on the planet! You should see some of their show from 1986, at Wembley Stadium! Incredible!

What many dont realise about Phil is he introduced the new sound of drums in 80's. It is gated reverb drum sound. Before him the drums sounded dry and hollow and would never cut through the song. During one recording session with Peter Gabriel and producer Hugh Padgham they discovered this technique by accident but Phil perfected it so well everyone was using it in 80's and later to this day. And it is this drum sound that allowed many songs today to exist and without it they would never become hits.

This song was actually written by him either during or right after his first divorce... He said the words came out so fast and easily that he didn't even have time to write them down correctly, just scribbled them down on something... I belieeeeve it was to the dude who slept with his then-wife... But, yeah, check out "Ssssusdio" by Phil Collins, and "Easy Lover" that he did with Philip Bailey of "Earth, Wind, and Fire"... He also did an episode on "Miami Vice" back in the day where his song, "Take Me Home," was also a featured track... He did all this amazing music AFTER his singing and drumming days with the band, "Genasis"... Yeah, definitely check him out, dude... OH, AND I WAS REMINDED, PLEASE, check out his song, "I Don't Care Anymore," ANOTHER GREAT drum section... Yeah. He's a baaaad monkeyfarma!!! lol 🤘🏾🤙🏾✌🏾

So glad you liked it. This is the best rendition of the song I have seen.
I had the pleasure of attending an outdoor concert in Dallas which starred Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and of course Phil Collins!! That is an incredible trio!! Phil performed this very song. Later, Clapton walked up to the mic and broke into Layla and in that instant a bolt of lightning came down and branched out under the clouds!! He kept right on playing and then the rain came. We all stood with out lighters burning, with our arms stretched out above us.!! The rain stopped shortly after he finished the song!! To say that it was a spiritual event... well, it was.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe. Everyone!

Collins was in the band Genesis. This is from his debut solo album "Face Value" released on February 13, 1981. In 1979, Collins began to write songs during a break in activity from Genesis. This song was used in a superb way in the series pilot for the 80s show "Miami Vice," which was a great show about Miami undercover cops trying to deal with the Florida drug trade, where so much money is involved that the criminals can easily make a million dollar bribe to get what they want.

He starred in childrens tv movies as a teenager & even got a cameo role in a Beatles movie . In the late 60s he started his own band The Phil Collins Band / Flaming Youth , a few years later joined Genesis as drummer/vocalist and went on to be lead singer . After Genesis he had a huge solo career and at one point was 3rd in the world after Elvis & Prince to sell over 100million solo albums . In 1988 he played the lead role in the movie Buster and in 1999 he did the soundtrack for Disney's Tarzan .

Thise backjing vocals are created with a vocoder, a keyboard instrument with a vocal microphone, that let's the vocal shape the sound of the synth. And yeah, Daft Punk are avid users of the vocoder. It came to prominence in the 70s but has enjoyed many revivals since, first with this 1980 monster hit, and later with Daft Punk and many others.

Phil Collins is known worldwide as one of the best drummers ever, and of course an excellent songwriter and singer. He’s won several Grammys…Golden Globes & Brit Awards… plus other awards too! I’ve been a fan of his for years, as well as the band “Genesis”
I wasn’t at this particular concert (Paris), but I did see him at Manchester and Glasgow during the same tour.
The drums that he used actually came up through the floor just before he got to them (you can just about see them moving upwards in the video) I’m not sure which venue it was, but during one concert of the tour, the drums failed to rise up. Phil jumped down into the hole and hit the drums as normal!
    What a performer!

The version you just reacted to and the Paris version are my two best favorites. Haunting & Hurtful song "In The Air Tonight" is born out of Phil Collins divorce. He was also a member of a few other bands....Band Aud and Band X are 2 I can remember off the top of my head. He eventually did reunite with Gennisis and I think they produced another album. Sadly though Phil has had health issues and the surgery he had on his spine has left him very immobile......but the music still lives on in our hearts and minds.

Phil was in Genesis as their drummer throughout 1971-96.
In 1976 he also became the singer, succeeding Peter Gabriel, bringing in Chester Thompson on drums for live tours. The band had regular short hiatuses where the individual members recorded solo projects. First Steve Hackett, then all three remaing members with Mike and the Mechanics, Tony Banks/Bankstatement and Phil Collins respectively. Phil released his first in 1981 after his divorce.
After leaving the band he joined for the single Carpet Crawlers 1999 with Peter Gabriel. Also on the tours Turn it on again in 2007 and finally The last domino tour in 2022.

Next to Genesis and his solo career, he was a session musician and record producer for a wide range of artists, such as Robert Plant, Philip Bailey, Frida (from ABBA), Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Adam Ant, John Martyn, Gary Brooker, Paul McCartney and many more. 🙂

It took me quite a while to learn to sing while playing first rhythm and then lead guitar. I can play drums quite basically, nothing like as powerful and nuanced as Phil plays, but I can't sing while doing so to save my life. The man is an inspiration.

    From Wiki...
"Collins's discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million certified units in the US and an estimated 150 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists.[10] He is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band.[11][12] He has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award.[13] He was awarded six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the International Achievement Award. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. He has also been recognised by music publications with induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013."

SInging while playing drums requires real talent, as singing requires proper breath control, so playing the drums while you sing is extremely difficult.
Now, if you want to listen to more of Phil Collins... there is a TON of truly fantastic music both from his solo career and from his time with Genesis

Thank you so much for your fantastic and beautiful reaction to Phil Collins. I have seen this video so many times (I'm in my late 60s).I love the reactions of younger generations today to something that was there probably before they were born.,your respect, was lovely to see. I smiled when you said when is this going to start, and then how much you loved the intro, I thought to myself, well if you love the intro you will probably be blown away by the end of it. I swear that I knew you would love the iconic guitarist and his cool layed back look. Well anyway, just THANK YOU, again, take care, Tony here in the UK 🇬🇧

You can see and hear his London music and drama training In this performance. He sang on the London stage, starring in the musical 'Oliver' before becoming a professional drummer, eventually joining the rock band Genesis. His leading role in a cool episode of the TV cops and robbers show Miami Vice (called 'Phil the Shill') got him a movie role. He starred in 'Buster', a love story/drama about a real-life 1964 train robbery. While all this was happening he was still with Genesis.....even with a solo career. He is a complicated and talented man, now retired and living in Switzerland.
