@@stevem-h3562 It's not a case of "listen only to the original only", it's simply the best. This is one of the few Pink Floyd songs that the album version is the best, that there isn't a live version that is better. Sorry, it takes 3 to do the job of one in this one. Like having a great hamburger- it's good, but steak beats it every time. This song relies on the mood and technique of the singer more than many others. In this case, it just feels "off", nonorganic.
They did not tell her about five stages of death. They simply told her to improvise, and after a while of feeling totally lost about what they wanted, Dave finally told her to think about death. She did her thing and left shaking her head and thinking this would never see the light of day. And the rest as they say, is history.
I was not one of the fortunate few to be at Earl's Court when the P.U.L.S.E. DVD was recorded, but I did attend the Edmonton, Alberta, Canada concert during the 1994 Division Bell tour. During my 64 years on this planet, I have seen 141 bands LIVE (that have released at least one album), but none have ever come anywhere close to Pink Floyd. Truly masters at their craft.
I recommend "Run like hell" . This is more a rock song. What David Gilmour does with his guitar at the beginning of the song is alien-like. And the singing between him and the young bassist is fascinating. And the song "Wish you were here". In this song David has an amazing duet with his....no, i don't spoiler. Both songs from the Pulse Tour. Thanks for your great reactions.
It's about poverty and if we as human beings don't reach out and do our part to help, the cycle will continue... The King, Elvis sure did MORE than his part; especially living such a short life 👏
Rick Wright, Pink Floyd keyboardist, asked Durga Mcbroom, a background singer for Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing this song at his funeral. She did that too, as she confirmed to me personally. But there is still the unconfirmed rumor that she was accompanied on the piano by John Lord
At around 7:45 in your video you say: "so I will let you guys choose which one you want me to react to next". I suggest a track that highlights the backing singers as much as David's voice and guitar, in addition to a few surprises. Pink Floyd - "Keep Talking" PULSE Remastered 2019
Yes, to second, third... if you are looking for your next PF reaction from this concert, Run Like Hell is it. then, I usually recommend checking out MONEY, Shine on You Crazy Diamond parts I-IX, DOGS and Echoes. I could go on but at this point, you could still listen to 20 other songs and finally find your favorite. SO many brilliant songs
Great reaction, no, you shouldn't know what it's about, the bigger the surprise. It's one of Pink Floyd's "craziest" songs, but with everything that goes with it, it's definitely one of the top songs, with (background) voices that show what they can do. I think you don't have to decide which of the Pink Floyd songs is the best (at least that's how I feel), but depending on your mood you choose one or another.
Blah blah blah, Claire Torry. These three ladies performed this in one take., Live! No rerecording, remastering. These three ladies are the Supreme Performance of this song. They knocked it out of the park.
Why do people recommend this song without specifying the album version? There’s nothing wrong with this but first listen should be the original. Literally one of the great solo vocal performances on a rock album ever.
not only dark side was first played live for a long time and then recorded in the studio, but pink floyd is more than just pulse....i agree with you dark side and especially wish you were here must be listen to in studio version
Just subscribed, like your reactions. You have to do the song that has 1.7Billion views on YT. Maybe the greatest rock song ever, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (official remastered video) . Thanks
Listen to a band called Atom and a lady called Viviane Donner doing Great Gig In The Sky,Over the years Pink Floyd has used 16 different singers to sing this and normally you might get 2/3 singers all doing parts of the song, with Viviane she does the whole song with no other help, she is the closest to Clare Torry you will get 100%.I am Not saying that Atom are better than Floyd, not at all,but with this song Viviane nails it,There is no harm in having a listen,Best Wishes from Scotland.
With respect, I need to contribute something that I hope will improve your reactions. I notice 5hat you rely on many adjectives to give yourself something to say on camera, but I've never heard you say anything that indicates you gained any understanding of these songs. You might find it helpful to read a little backstory on these songs to give yourself an advantage in understanding the meaning of material such as this. Bummer. With Pink Floyd, it's best to stick to the studio stuff. Roger Waters, the genius behind PF, isn't even pat of this concert. The studio of version of this is incredible. Clare Torry on vocals. Please check that out over this one.
The keyboardist is Rick Wright, the "quiet one", I'm tickled that you favor him. PF wouldn't have been PF without his keyboards and compositions. Rick wrote this song when they were touring a lot, and he wondered how he would feel if he had to die so young - plane crash, car accident, who knows, anything could happen. How would a young person feel to have to die with their life unfulfilled? So there are no lyrics, just the wordless emotions of a person as she dies - denial, anger, despair, and then a gradual acceptance until she finally slips away. It is incredibly beautiful, and a fine example of what Rick brought to the band.
The first time I saw this gig on video it absolutely changed my life. To this day, I've still never seen anything like it. RIP Claudia, gone but never forgotten.
I saw this perfomed live on the previous tour ( A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour ) 3 different backing vocalist , equally as beautiful ) , enjoy your Pink Floyd journey
That's a pedal steel guitar that David was playing. He also plays the guitar solo at the end of High Hope's with that instrument. They also do an all instrumental song called "One of These Days" where David really goes crazy on the pedal steel! Your next song should be the 1988 live version of "On the Turning Away". The backup vocalists in that concert tour are also amazing!!
i was at that concert, in fact i went twice that week. best concert i've ever been too. its great to see you discovering bands ive loved all my life, im also a led zeppelin fan, and loving your reactions. Thank you for your time :) i look forward your next reaction
Whilst a great live version, this is one of the very few Pink Floyd tracks where you need to listen to the studio version, where a 25 year old Clare Torry improvised the whole thing with minimal briefing in just 2 1/2 takes. It's never been bettered or equalled. You need to see this video where Clare describes the whole thing in her typically English, self-deprecating way. th-cam.com/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pBnAMNHL1o46rFcY .I think she was paid a session fee of £30 for it, and that was it, but in later years she was given co-writing credits and received the sizable royalties she so deserved.
@@fifidurand7421 - OK, point taken! Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion Results are legendary.

Run like Hell next from Pulse concert. BUT, you should really listen to the whole Wall album first (a concept album) and then watch the1982 Wall movie. It is an AMAZING movie and will help you understand the story of the album.
Sam Brown and the girls did a good job here, BUT you REALLY need to listen to the album version. Trust me your ears will bless you! Claire Torrey is extraordinary, she will sear your soul!
This version is nice, but the Album version is legendary for multiple reasons, including the fact that it was improvised. 😳 So you now must listen to the album version. 🤯🤘😎 These young ladies are great, but Clare Torrey was incredible!
As a fan of Pink Floyd since 68 and somebody who has everything they ever recorded on vinyl I cannot understand why so many people are enamored by the Pulse concert. I had the opportunity to attend five of their concerts and the pulse does not represent what the band was prior. It can't compare except for who have no clue. So I'll listen to Pink Floyd reactions from you when you quit doing the Pulse concert. After all the great music was produced a couple decades earlier before all the attitudes and Division. Also I prefer the old days before pitch correction and Auto-Tune. another reason it is recorded in 440 agitating frequency instead of the 432 which is much more calming and relaxing. As most all their old music.
And I am not frightened of dying Any time will do, I don't mind Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime I never said I was afraid of dying 😮 Incredibly telling words
I have been to 4 of their concerts. I love the original Clare Torry version best. Still, if you wanna see the best version of this live, I would have to say the 1988 World Tour filmed for Delicate Sound of Thunder has the best three female vocalists: th-cam.com/video/Ke9y_yfwJtg/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared This song is about death, and you can hear her emotions as she goes through the stages of death. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
When Claire Torrey asked what she should be doing, she was told to "sing as if she were an instrument herself."[6] Torry performed two complete takes, the second more emotional than the first, but when David Gilmour asked for a third take she stopped halfway through, feeling that she was becoming repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes.
One of the most unique and beautiful pieces of music ever. It makes me weep when I hear it, EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now you MUST do the finale to that concert, 'Run Like Hell', It will be the most explosive and spectacular thing you've ever seen.
wish you were hear. my favourite. reminds me of my departed uncle. we're just 2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowl. year after year. that was us 2. now there's only me. 😢
I am so happy that you have been come a floydian and that's not such a bad thing as you will continue on a journey a spiritual emotional rollercoaster ride that will inbred in your soul for ever And to me David Gilmore has his guitar strings attached to his soul
Rick Wright had this to say: "I didn't, when I wrote it, think, 'This is all about death,' cos I don't think I would have written that chord structure. I get so excited when I hear Clare singing. For me, it's not necessarily death. I hear terror and fear and huge emotion, in the middle bit especially, and the way the voice blends with the band. The way it was mixed helps." The book about the stages of death was very new at the time and would not have been an inspiration. To me it sounds way more like a simple struggle against death and acceptance of it eventually.
A top Tier group ….. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who & The Beatles 🎸™️ not necessarily in that order … it’s just my opinion, but every other group in music falls underneath this top tier.
Vocalists were Sam Browne, Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine in that order. David's instrument was a pedal steel guitar, a descendant of a lap steel guitar or slide guitar. It started off as a Hawaiian technique of playing a normal guitar using a slide or 'steel', then evolved to sit in the player's lap, then acquired legs and pedals to change the pitch. I love David's playing on that.
If you want something different in this concert, do the closing song Run Like Hell....they are having a blast doing this one ....and as always with PF.....you never know what your going to get ....it's awesome
If you like Davids Voice you must hear Coming back to life. When you hear another David Gilmour you must hear Red sky at night from the Album Live in Gdansk
If you really want to dive into Pink Floyd.....start with the lalbum Darh Side of the Moon from 1973....which is where you'll find this song....the whole album is filled with some of the best music ever created!
David is playing a „steel lap“ on this (like in the second High Hopes Solo!). Next: „Shine on you crazy diamond“ or „Keep Talking“ (where David plays guitar through his mouth!)
They have a cover band that tour's around the world I was able too see them if you close your eyes you couldn't tell the difference. It's not too many times a band show case back up Singer like this. But Pink Floyd isn't a regular band. You should do a poll on songs from the Anamul album they use Anamul sounds iñ the music. Very different. Good reaction as always.
You still have many "mind-blowers" to go from this seminal band! Anything dfrom (like this song was) "Dark side of the moon" or "The Wall" is pretty much GOLD, and other, deeper fans can give you more recommendations! Wonderful reaction to this passionate powerhouse!
The studio version with Clare Torry is the definitive version, but you can’t beat seeing it performed live and seeing the passion that the singers bring to it. For something a little different you could try ‘Keep Talking’ from Pulse! Thank you for your warm and heartfelt reactions!
Love the way Gilmour finishes playing and just watches Claudia Fontaine finish her section.

David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call god. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. The speaking at the start was recorded at Apple records with various employees answering a list of questions next to a small recording machine. The question was…“Are You afraid Of Dying? This one was an elderly gentleman who was a janitor in the place. Roger thought it would fit in the song at the beginning so there it is. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus.

Run like Hell next from Pulse concert. BUT, you should really listen to the whole Wall album first (a concept album) and then watch the1982 Wall movie. It is an AMAZING movie and will help you understand the story of the album.
David is playing the slide guitar in this dong....51 years old.....that makes me very old😂😂😂😂
Sam Brown and the girls did a good job here, BUT you REALLY need to listen to the album version. Trust me your ears will bless you! Claire Torrey is extraordinary, she will sear your soul!
This version is nice, but the Album version is legendary for multiple reasons, including the fact that it was improvised. 😳
So you now must listen to the album version. 🤯🤘😎
These young ladies are great, but Clare Torrey was incredible!
RUN LIKE HELL should absolutely be your next reaction. You will love it !!
And I am not frightened of dying
Any time will do, I don't mind
Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime
I never said I was afraid of dying
😮
Incredibly telling words
Olá do Brasil, ouça a música TIME versão remasterizada.
That blonde should get an award of some sort for that performance. Some of awards they give out are a joke compared to that.
One of the most unique and beautiful pieces of music ever. It makes me weep when I hear it, EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now you MUST do the finale to that concert, 'Run Like Hell', It will be the most explosive and spectacular thing you've ever seen.
Next one from Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond . ( studio version ) or ( Pulse concert version ) 🎸🎶🎶
Since you are such a fan of the keyboarder Richard Wright, you will probably be sad to hear that he already died in 2008 in London.😢
wish you were hear. my favourite. reminds me of my departed uncle. we're just 2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowl. year after year. that was us 2. now there's only me. 😢
I am so happy that you have been come a floydian and that's not such a bad thing as you will continue on a journey a spiritual emotional rollercoaster ride that will inbred in your soul for ever
And to me David Gilmore has his guitar strings attached to his soul
You've got to hear the version sung by Clare Tory. She is the co-creator of the song, and her version is the definitive version.
Allow me to suggest the next song MONEY
The live version is … different :)
This blond woman sounds nothing like the original album.
David looks over when it's time for her to wrap it up. If you look close she looks over at him also and picks up on his cue
The genius of pink Floyd death as an orgasm
Check the song ‘time’ but he album version
Pink Floyd makes magic not music.
The instrument you are referring to is a lap steel guitar.
you should have asked your followers what version to do. the studio version from Dark Side of The Moon
Seether -"Driven Under" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yo7re soo bonnie
Very nice, but it isn't Clare.
Never saying a word !
True Denial, anger, bargainine, deppression and acceptance. EPIC 💯❤️🇮🇹
Rick Wright had this to say:
"I didn't, when I wrote it, think, 'This is all about death,' cos I don't think I would have written that chord structure. I get so excited when I hear Clare singing. For me, it's not necessarily death. I hear terror and fear and huge emotion, in the middle bit especially, and the way the voice blends with the band. The way it was mixed helps."
The book about the stages of death was very new at the time and would not have been an inspiration.
To me it sounds way more like a simple struggle against death and acceptance of it eventually.
That was a steel guitar
Bones,Doc, Kracker ass,Dirty Jersey I miss you guys ..🔥💪
We bleed black and gold, Deptford New Jersey let's do it, miss you guys
Pink Floyd is Powerful Music 🎵🎶!!!!!!! I'm 70 still Rock n Roll!!!!!!!! Till ☠️💀☠️!!!!!!!
Next: „Shine on you crazy diamond“ or „Keep Talking“ (where David plays guitar through his mouth!)
cried like a baby , my favourite song, takes on new meaning with the end of life of my darling boy Mowgli
