Nah. The "True" Origins started in the 1910s when women were allowed to perform Gymnastics. Back then, it was believed that exercise was harmful to women and their future babies --- so athletics ability in women gymnasts was strictly forbidden. The Russians were the ones who pushed the sport from it's Dark Ages of posturing and looking pretty, to something vaguely athletic.

Olga Korbut talked about this in an IG interview back in the late 80s... she said that Nadia plainly ignored her when they crossed paths in between events - she said you might nod or say "hi" to your competitors, but Nadia was like a robot... There was a lot going on with the Iron Wall, both within and out of it, so maybe that's why they didn't interact - it changed completely after '89..
It’s funny she decided to claim the double back somersault as her skill when Maria Filatova and Olga Korbut also competed the skill in this competition 🤣
Wow! 🎉excellent performance. In these years, the gymnasts were strong, gracious, and very slender. Now the gymnasts are strong 💪, with muscles of 🏋 weight-lifters and not at all slender.
For all of her technical perfection and immaculate presentation, I always found Kim's performances lacked that extra magical something! When I think of the all great Russian female gymnasts of the 1970's, Kim is not even in my top 20.
She was one of if not my favourite gymnast but each to his own. One interesting thing Nelli said that her sister was more talented than Nelli but did not have the perseverance to put in the vast amounts of time and training to be a top flight Olympic competitor.
So what. She is doing it back then on an unsprung floor and with infinitely more grace than the muscle bound creatures bouncing around today. Gymnastics has been trashed, its original point being to show off the beauty and aesthetic of the human body. Not how many rotations you can tumble on a spring loaded floor like some demented jack in the box.
I saw her do an excebition in Albuquerque NM in the mid to Late 70's...just wonderful!
Beautiful, stunning floor exercises from one & only Nellie Kim!
Quelle grâce chez cette gymnaste, je me souviens d'elle comme si c'était hier.
Wow - what a gymnast she was! Stunning routine!
So balletic back then. Shows us the true orgins of gymnastic. ❤

and today we see Simone Biles kind of gymnastics - all power but no tenderness and softness

Um bem merecido 10! ❤ Sem passos extras, dificuldade acima, carisma, arte e graciosidade 💖
Nelly, unforgettable

Wow! She was amazing. So much control and grace. I like Nadia's style a but more but they were both amazing.
Câtă eleganță și câtă grație. Felicitări ptr perfecțiune!
I was 11 years old at the time and had a HUGE crush on her, she was so pretty.
That was perfect
Perfect 10 10 10 👏
Tumbling on about a one inch mat. No springs.
What’s the difference from then to now? With the floor quality

Estética total. Armonía!
Extraordinar. Inimitabil.
A real woman showing the grace and beauty of the human body through gymnastics, not a muscle bound elastic band pinging all over the mat.
She should just do ballet then.
I was thinking the exact same thing, very feminine and graceful❤
Not muscle bound -- that explains the second and third passes 😂
Nellie Kim é primorosa. A mais encantadora da sua geração.

Definitely no flaws in this routine.
Красивая девочка❤, неудивительно, что в честь нее назвали Нелли Фуртадо

Too bad the commentators talked over her routine. We need to hear the music in order to appreciate the choreography.
Showing more than a little of the Olga Korbut influence.

Beautiful girl
"All 99 pounds of her." said Chris Schenkel. They used to have weigh-ins for gymnasts, like they were boxers?
Not sure but their height & weight was regularly listed or announced on tv.
“all 99 pounds of her” is that supposed to be condescending??
I don't think so, just typical 70s commentators making unnecessary comments about women's bodies.
Now a days it would likely be a bad comment, but back then skinny and barely 100 pounds was the norm.
@@BonnieDragonKat 99 lbs actually was a lot for gymnasts back then.
Only if you are looking for something to be offended about
Gymnasts back then were smaller compared to today. Doesn't make it okay, it's just the way it was.
